Esquivias Assistant National Statistician National Censuses Service ISSN 0117-1453 FOREWORD The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) conducted the 2015 Census of Population (POPCEN 2015) in August 2015 primarily to update the country’s population and its demographic characteristics, such as the size, composition, and geographic distribution. Report No. 3 – Population, Land Area, and Population Density is among the series of publications that present the results of the POPCEN 2015. This publication provides information on the population size, land area, and population density by region, province, highly urbanized city, and city/municipality based on the data from population census conducted by the PSA in the years 2000, 2010, and 2015; and data on land area by city/municipality as of December 2013 that was provided by the Land Management Bureau (LMB) of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR). Also presented in this report is the percent change in the population density over the three census years. The population density shows the relationship of the population to the size of land where the population resides. -

The Use GIS and Remote Sensing in the Assessment of Magat Watershed in the Philippines A thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Environmental Management Massey University, Turitea Campus, Palmerston North, New Zealand Emerson Tattao 2010 Abstract The Philippine watersheds are continually being degraded— thus threatening the supply of water in the country. The government has recognised the need for effective monitoring and management to avert the declining condition of these watersheds. This study explores the applications of remote sensing and Geographical Information Systems (GIS), in the collection of information and analysis of data, in order to support the development of effective critical watershed management strategies. Remote sensing was used to identify and classify the land cover in the study area. Both supervised and unsupervised methods were employed to establish the most appropriate technique in watershed land cover classification. GIS technology was utilised for the analysis of the land cover data and soil erosion modelling. The watershed boundary was delineated from a digital elevation model, using the hydrological tools in GIS. The watershed classification revealed a high percentage of grassland and increasing agricultural land use, in the study area. The soil erosion modelling showed an extremely high erosion risk in the bare lands and a high erosion risk in the agriculture areas. -

Dire Rights Situation As Martial Law Continues in Southern Philippines
International fact-finding mission: Dire rights situation as Martial Law continues in southern Philippines 26 February 2018 (Quezon City, Philippines) – Under continuing Martial Law in the Mindanao island, in southern Philippines, farmers and indigenous peoples have experienced heightened cases of false charges, harassment, and even torture and killings. This is according to personal accounts of farmers, indigenous peoples and delegates of a recent International Solidarity Mission (ISM) who gathered at a forum today. Displacement, torture, killings Janry Mensis, a farmer from Compostela Valley in the Davao region, recounted how he and a minor “Jerry” was beaten, tortured and barely escaped murder by soldiers under the 71st Infantry “Kaibigan” Battalion (IB) of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP). The report of the fact-finding mission also found a grim situation in Compostela Valley: “Several families from Talaingod and other communities in Compostela Valley are evacuating because of hamletting and threats.” “There are around 60 families of Lumads who are now in the Sanctuary area, and still counting. This is due to the massive militarization happening in their ancestral lands prohibiting them to go to their farms,” the report of the ISM added. The report also described how the AFP, with foreign and local big business, “have instigated a brutal war against indigenous people’s communities in the SocSKSargends region, which resulted in the massacre of eight Lumad leaders in Lake Sebu, South Cotabato.” Adina Ambag, sister of one of the victims of the December 2017 Lake Sebu massacre,i decried the inaction of the local government and the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP) during last Monday’s forum. -

Several waterbodies have been declared as natural wetlands in the country supporting the needs of community like water and food. In this study, 65 natural wetlands were considered including six sites that were identified as ‘Wetlands of International Importance’ such as Naujan Lake National Park, Agusan Marsh Wildlife Sanctuary, Olango Island Wildlife Sanctuary, Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park, Las Piñas-Parañaque Critical Habitat and Ecotourism Area and Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park. There are 22 wetland types presented in this research categorizing the Philippine wetlands. Philippine wetlands are now facing tremendous challenges such as land use conversion, abuse of resources, pollution coming from domestic, industrial and agricultural activities, and climate change. This paper provides an overview of Philippine wetlands in terms of their characteristics and components, impacts in the ecosystem, and the challenges they are dealing with. -

SoCCSKSarGen Cluster 2 Blessed with almost even dry and rainy seasons (typhoon free) and fertile soil, picturesque landscapes, and very unique tri- people cultures which have been nurtured and preserved through generations we are greatly challenged with the negative peace and order perception of South-Central Mindanao that made our very own Filipino tourists shy away from including us as a tourist destination. 3 Great advantage – cultural endowments, which can be positioned to make us a premier tourist destination. It is our “sunshine” industry - Tourism will give us a greater economic stability, fund our environmental rehabilitation and protection programs, and provide us stimuli or incentives for our tenured migrants to sustain our conservation efforts. -

Editor’s Corner Steve Platnick EOS Senior Project Scientist Continuing a busy year of launches for NASA’s Earth Science Division,1 the Ice, Cloud and land Elevation Satellite-2 (ICESat-2) successfully launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California at 6:02 AM PDT (9:02 AM EDT) on September 15, aboard a United Launch Alliance Delta II rocket—the final launch of the Delta II. About 75 minutes after launch, ground stations in Svalbard, Norway acquired signals from the spacecraft. The Advanced Topographic Laser Altimeter System (ATLAS), the lone instrument on ICESat-2, successfully fired its laser on September 30 after the mission operations team completed testing of the spacecraft and opened the door protecting the optics. The primary science mission for ICESat-2 is to gather enough observations to estimate the annual height change of the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets to within four millimeters. ICESat-2 continues the record of ice height measurements started by NASA’s original ICESat mission, which operated from 2003 to 2009. ICESat’s ice height measurements were continued by the agency’s annual Operation IceBridge airborne flights over the Arctic and Antarctic, which began in 2009 and continue to the present. The next round of deployments to Chile and Argentina are now underway, and will run through mid-November. Data from ICESat-2 will be available to the public through the National Snow and Ice Data Center. Engineers at NASA Goddard built and tested the ATLAS instrument, and manage the ICESat-2 mission for NASA’s Science Mission Directorate. -
