Last Chance to Register: November General Membership Breakfast & Gift Drive

LHC’s GM Breakfast & Gift Drive is set for Friday, November 8. Join us as we welcome Jamie McDonald, CEO of Generosity, Inc. and co-founder of The Courage.Us, to inspire us to Think Big!

As a reminder, Ms. McDonald will host a 30-minute, interactive post-session following the regular program. This event is free for program attendees and advanced registration is requested; please access the link included in the auto- generated breakfast event registration confirmation.

We will be collecting non-perishable food items and toiletries for various HCPSS school pantries (click here for a list of For More Information & Registration needed items). Also, HopeWorks will be taking orders for their HopeBox holiday gift box fundraiser, initially created with the help of a LP '16 CIP Team. For more information, click here.

The Leadership U Class of 2019 spent part their non- school Friday participating in LU's 3D-HC to dig deep & discover Howard County. Groups spent time learning about a community organization and did some hands-on service. This year's participating groups were: Patapsco State Park, Howard County Arts Council, Howard County Food Bank, and the Community Action Council's Community Garden.

LU Project Spotlights

The Working Class Heroes team is organizing a volunteer resource fair for non-profit organizations serving families experiencing poverty on November 10 from 3 to 4 pm at the Elkridge Branch of the HCL, 6540 Washington Boulevard. The Team's goal is to connect high school student volunteers with these organizations to help build volunteer resources. Please share this information with any high school students who may be interested in getting involved. More details can be found at their website.

The Green Go Clean team has partnered with the Community Ecology Institute to raise awareness and volunteer to help transform an organic farm in the heart of Howard County. Projects include cleaning out streams, planting trees and rain gardens. The farm will be an active agricultural and environmental community center where people can learn via hands-on experience. ​​Community Events & Volunteer Opportunities

FIRN is seeking volunteers to serve on its Board and/or strategic planning, fundraising, and finance committees. The Board meets once a month (on the third Tuesday, 7 to 9 pm) and subcommittees generally meet once a month between board meetings. S.A.F.E. Food Pantry, which was a CIP project during the LP '19 program year, is hosting its first Gluten -Free and Allergy-Friendly Family Pancake Breakfast Saturday, November 9 from 9 to 11:30 am at Grace Episcopal Church in Elkridge, MD. S.A.F.E.’s mission is to educate, inspire, and engage the community about the necessity for gluten free and allergy-friendly food and provide that safe food to those who need it. This family breakfast is designed to give the community an opportunity to learn more about what we do while raising funds to support our mission. To find out more information, click here.

The Howard County Veterans Foundation, Inc., in partnership with the Columbia Association, have planned the 5th Annual Howard County Veterans Day Parade to honor all branches of the US Military, the National Guard, First Responders, and their families on Sunday, November 10, from 9:30 am to 1 pm. The parade will begin from Merriweather Post Pavilion at 9:30 am and travel along Little Patuxent Parkway, ending at the future site of the Howard County Veterans Monument at .

Nine finalists, selected out of 56 applicants, will present their big ideas for social change in Howard County at the Changemaker Challenge live event, Monday, November 11 Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab, Kossiakoff Center - Room K215, 11100 Johns Hopkins Road, Laurel, from 6:30 to 8:30 pm (doors open at 5:45 pm).

Prize money will total $60,000; one $25,000, one $15,000 and two $10,000 awards (one prize awarded to a project serving people with developmental or intellectual disabilities). Click here to register or email Kari Staddon for more information.

LHC’s current Best Class Ever, LP 2018, also self-identified as “The Best Bridge Builders!”, is looking to create a framework to develop a cross-class platform for social/casual events and to work on a purposeful, yearly group project. Designated as “Bridge the Class Project”, ALL GRADS are invited and encouraged to get involved – either with their classes or individually.

A Happy Hour will be held on Thursday, November 21 at Food Plenty - 12250 Clarksville Pike, Clarksville, from 5 to 7 pm. During this time, the Water Fountain Project will be discussed. This first identified yearly effort, in conjunction with The Howard County Conservancy, is to place a fountain at the Nature Center at Belmont Manor Park. For more information, click here. Are you working on an effort - or know of a non-profit working on something that would improve the county? Howard County Executive Ball has announced the creation of a $225,000 Innovation Fund. Funding will be directed to projects that foster innovation for the public good. Ideas should: Be Innovative and Original Support Greater Efficiencies Emphasize Priority Outcomes and Quality of Life Be Feasible and Measurable Click here for more information and specific criteria. Howard County Commission for Women seeks nominations for the 2020 Women’s Hall of Fame . To be eligible, nominees may be either living or deceased and must have lived in Howard County for at least 10 years. Up to five women will be selected for induction at the Commission’s annual Women’s Hall of Fame in March 2020, held during National Women’s History Month. Deadline for nominations is November 21, by 5 pm. For more information, click here.

The Howard County Local Emergency Planning Committee, along with the Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue Services, is hosting a free, public meeting focused on winter safety and designed to help businesses and community members increase their resiliency and preparedness by providing information and training on Thursday, November 21. Coffee, light breakfast, and networking begin at 9 am; training at 9:30 am. To register, click here.

Interns really benefit from learning about potential careers in an authentic, professional environment – areas within the areas below are especially desired: Civil Law (in Howard or Baltimore County) Orthodontics (Howard County) Mechanical Engineering (willing to travel!) Finance (personal or otherwise- willing to travel up to 30 minutes away)

Leadership of Greater Washington, in partnership with A Wider Circle, invites members to participate in their 2020 Thought Leadership Series: “Ending Systemic Violence Through Economic Opportunity”. Leaders will engage in six half-day interactive workshops to educate and promote bold thinking and solutions to reducing systemic violence in our region through economic partnership, multi-sector collaboration, and opportunity. Class of 2019 members recently got together for a variety of events (from l-r)... enjoying happy hour (aka Octoberfest-Zest); at the County Executive's Innovation Summit and below, Ajit Apte and his wife, Uttara, opened up their home for an amazing authentic Indian dinner to support the Creative Alliance's free education and community programs for children, youth and families.

Congratulations to Tony and Tonya Aikens, LP '19, who recently celebrated their wedding in Paris, France. A notable highlight Tonya shared was she discovered Success In Style (SIS) by attending a LHC learning opportunity. She subsequently worked with the SIS team to get her beautiful dress while supporting others - a perfect win-win (plus, her dress received the red-carpet treatment during their flight, travelling in the Captain's cockpit)! Sheri Fanaroff, LP ’03, recently received an OnCon Icon Award and has been named to its list of Top 50 General Counsels.

Jan Hines, LP '09, is now the Executive Director of the Hamel Scholarship Fund, LLC - Hamel Foundation, Inc.

Raj Kudchadkar, LP '12, will be joining the Maryland Coalition for Inclusive Education (MCIE) as their Director on November 15.

Congratulations to Vanita Leatherwood, LP '13, who has been promoted to HopeWorks' Deputy Director.

A special acknowledgement to two special leaders in this year's LP '20 Class: Chief Lisa Myers, Howard County Police Department and Chief Christine Uhlhorn, Howard County Fire & Rescue Services were recently profiled in the Baltimore Sun’s Women to Watch magazine.

Suzi Padgett, LP '16, recently received the Community Service Award from The Howard County Association of Realtors.

Owen Rouse, Jr., LP '02, has joined Mackenzie Commercial Real Estate as Vice- President, Investment Sales.

Jim Sanders, LP ’19, recently joined the Community Foundation of Howard County Board of Directors.
