Nun Johannes Itten wird das «vergessene» Bauhaus zugänglich, anschaulich erfahrbar gemacht. Und da ist an grossen Namen und Werken wahrlich kein Mangel: Neben Itten-Originalen sind viele wieder in Bern weitere, unter anderem von Muche, Klee, Feininger, Kandinsky, Schlemmer und Marcks präsentiert. Drei Entdeckungen Unter den selten oder noch nie öffentlich gezeigten Exponaten aus rund 20 Museen und Sammlungen In Bern wird am 17. ISBN 3-938025-39-5 Th e Bauhaus has probably been the most influential design school in the twentieth century. During its short existence, from 1919 until 1933 when it was closed under nazi pressure, it was led by famous artists and architects: Walter Gropius, Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Hannes Meyer, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Oskar Schlemmer, among others. After its move to Dessau from Weimar in 1925, the Bauhaus became the fountainhead of function- alism—in German: Neue Sachlichkeit—in art, architecture and design. Its structure and its teachings were disseminated by students and teachers throughout the world through new institutions, thus firmly establishing the avant-garde reputation of the Bauhaus. Th e functionalist era of the Bauhaus has been cherished and cultivated in many studies, and particularly by the publications of the Bauhaus-Archiv in Berlin, which acquires and holds most of the archival material on the institute, its teachers and its students. Th us the functionalist aura of the institute as a whole was safeguarded and propagated. It was not until circa 1990 that in publications by the Bauhaus-Archiv itself it was mentioned, almost reluctantly, that 19th century occultism and other esoteric currents had been an important factor in the establishment of the school as such. If the use of the term "avant-garde" to describe Utopian designs of aes­ thetic principles in the period before their establishment was ever valid, then, with a view to the Bauhaus, it fits well to this group of works by Johannes Itten. These paintings are characterized by an abstract geometric style, in which rectangular and circular or spiral shapes are combined with paradigmatic color constellations. In each of these paintings, Itten appears to test in an exemplary way fundamental principles of the form and color system of his abstract pictorial vocabulary: rectangle, square, circle, spiral, gradations of light and dark, and color contrasts. Each of these pictures has an exemplary character, without Itten having added further variations or even series to this form and color canon.

Bauhaus Utopias and Documents of Reality In the Bauhaus anniversary year of 2019, the Kunstmuseum Bern is devoting an exhibition to the major Swiss artist and Bauhaus Master Johannes Itten (1888-1967), which will for the first time focus on Itten’s utopian project of holistically merging life and art. Like very few other artists, Johannes Itten saw art and life as being closely connected; personal experiences and philosophical reflections are apparent in his work in many different ways. The central pieces in the exhibition are Itten’s diaries and sketchbooks, recently researched and never previously exhibited on this scale, which accompanied his artistic practice from 1913. In the context of key works from his painterly oeuvre with numerous pages from his diaries the exhibition sheds new light on Itten’s previously unknown form of disclosing the world through drawing, and the artistic working processes that emerged from it. Central to this are Itten’s diaries – newly researched and never previously shown on this scale – which are also his sketchbooks, and which, as blocks several hundred pages long, are being shown in their entire thematic range: they reveal not only Itten’s pioneering art-theoretical reflections, on colour theory amongst other things, but also his thoughts on an elementary theory of art, his studies of Old Masters, but also traces of his reading of the esoteric and scientific ideas of his time. «Using the example of Johannes Itten the exhibition places several established art-historical narratives of modern art under examination: more consistently than many others, Johannes Itten was a very early adopter of the conceptual concept of art and the ideas of the alternative ‹Lebensreform› movement with regard to the connection between art and life.

    WHITE The Lantern Parade There was a kite festival, when we marched in procession through Weimar to the top of the hill, with hundreds of school children. There were lantern festivals when lanterns made in the workshops were carried through the streets at night. There were dances nearly every Saturday, when we wore fantastic masks and costumes prepared by the theatre group. Ludwig Hirschfeld-Mack A mid-winter lantern parade led by art students through the centre of Melbourne, has been described by Mikala Dwyer as ‘our attempt at reanimating the memory ghost of the actual dynamic of education’. The lanterns were made during a week-long workshop that began each day with Johannes Itten’s Mazdaznan exercises. It brought together students and artists from the Faculty of Fine Arts and Music, Victorian College of the Arts, University of Melbourne, RMIT University and the Queensland College of Art, Griffith University.     Two theories for a model: the “querelle” between Klee and Ostwald Anna Marotta1 1Department of Architecture and Design, Polytechnic of Turin, [email protected] Corresponding author: Anna Marotta ([email protected]) ABSTRACT Framed in the time of history, the comparative theories of colour expressed not only give us a sort of "distillate" of chromatic culture, but also constitute a precious instrument of investigation, useful in the syncretic comparison of thoughts and positions, sometimes very different from each other, as in the case of the "querelle" between Paul Klee and Wilhelm Ostwald, a question proposed here again. This type of comparison, addressed in the 2017 conference on circular models, is developed here on biconical models, starting with those of Wilhelm Ostwald and Paul Klee, assuming and confirming the classification and analytical structuring of the models through the parameters adopted in Polychrome (Marotta 1999). It should be remembered that Klee publicly took a stand against Ostwald's theory and his model, but in fact assumed the essential geometry of the model of the chemist himself. The present investigation therefore aims to better clarify (in the face of formal analogies) the differences in objectives and scientific and artistic content. The work confirms that the position taken by Klee and his followers was partly prejudicial, linked to his artistic training and related experiences in the field, to which his intellectual milieu was no stranger. The position of the chemist is symmetrical, linked to the rigor of his scientific profile (although completed by the practice of painting). The substantial rapprochement of their respective convictions confirms the open-mindedness and maturity to which the two protagonists have arrived.

Norman Clemson University Computer-aided architectural design is design with color-the monitor of a CAAD system is a display of color, a place where images are produced by color manipulation. The success of these images can be judged by the ability of the colors selected to communicate graphic ideas and to convey graphic information. Color as a visual phenomena intrigued the impressionist painters at the end of the nineteenth century; it was the focus of much attention at the Bauhaus in Weimar Germany. When Johannes Itten was appointed as a Master of Form at the Bauhaus in 1919, he developed "an aesthetic color theory originating in the experience and intuition of a painter" (Itten, 1973, 11). In his definitive work, Itten postulates seven ways to communicate visual information with color. 'Each is unique in character and artistic value, in visual, expressive and symbolic effect, and together they constitute the fundamental resource of color design" (Itten, 1973, 36). These seven contrasts provide a lexicon of the methods by which computer images convey graphic information. The colors which form a computer image can be simply manipulated to illustrate these contrasts; today's computers make color manipulation a very simple matter. This paper is composed of short essays about each of these contrasts and how they can guide the selection of appropriate colors to convey visual intent on a picture tube. Considered together the contrasts of Itten provide a fundamental resource for electronic graphic communication.

    Toys and the Innocent Eye: Bauhaus toys of the 1920s submitted by Jonathan Foote, Ph.D Aarhus School of Architecture, Denmark "The whole technical power of painting," wrote John Ruskin in the Elements of Drawing, "depends on our recovery of what might be called the innocence of the eye; that is to say, a sort of childish perception of these flat stains of colour, merely as such, without consciousness of what they signify." Ruskin's radical transformation of the artist into a child-like visionary, the so-called innocent eye, would go on to become one of the foundations of the 20th century avant-garde and a key premise of Modernist design pedagogy. Through teachers such as Paul Klee and Johannes Itten, the Weimar Bauhaus curriculum developed a comprehensive re-ordering of art education based on the innocent eye. At the same time, and much less studied, the Bauhaus workshops produced a number of now iconic toys that were material embodiments of the innocent eye and demonstrated the potential of child-like play as a fundamental aspect of art and design education. Building on early pedagogical toys designed specifically for the kindergarten, such as the Fröbel blocks, the Bauhaus toys delighted in the potential of toys to become instruments of social and artistic reform for adults as well. Toys such as the Bauspiele Schiff by Alma Siedhoff-Buscher and Ludwig Hirschfeld-Mack's Optischer Farbmischer were not only objects of play for children, they were also intended as mediating devices for designers and artists to become child-like. Radical for their time, the Bauhaus toys were characterized by fundamental physical conditions such as weight, tactility and color, and they purposely transgressed the notion that a toy should represent something else, such as an animal or human figure.

    Queering the Bauhaus Johannes Birringer Book Reviewed: Elizabeth Otto, Haunted Bauhaus: Occult Spirituality, Gender Fluidity, Queer Identities, and Radical Politics, Cambridge, MA: The MIT Press, 2019. idening our lenses on the Bauhaus (1919–1933), arguably the twenti- eth century’s most influential art institution, means introducing new Wnarratives and subjecting to pressure the existing historical reception of its utopian energies. The school’s legacy has largely been associated with a rationalist modernism, its unique holistic pedagogies for the radical pursuit of art, architecture, design (including all the handcrafts in the various workshops), along with the emerging photography/film and graphic advertising media, ulti- mately also linked to a production ethos, bringing functional and elegant indus- trial design to the masses. The latter was a focus that Bauhaus founder Walter Gropius formulated in the proclamation “Art and Technology—a New Unity,” but this projected unity also symbolized a will for a new age (a reformed life or Lebensreform), given that the school opened shortly after the end of a catastrophic World War. Establishing a new model of a design school in Weimar, of all places, was auspicious: it brought together a younger generation of students and teachers who rejected the nationalistic, militaristic, and authoritarian past and believed in the social relevance of the arts in an emerging democratic society. Elizabeth Otto’s new book is as fascinating as it is relentless in disrupting most of the “normative narrative,” as she calls it, looking for what has been erased or overlooked, excavating the ghosts in the closets and cellars, searching for uncanny spectres that haunt the institution.

    Hölzel Circle as the Proto-Bauhaus: the Situation in the Stuttgart Academy and the Concept Brought to the Bauhaus Kanae Aoki The Museum of Modern Art, Wakayama Abstract In the very year of Bauhaus’ set-up, an artist left an academy: Adolf Hölzel (1853-1934) who was born in Austria, studied in Munich, worked in the artists’ colony in Dachau and was invited to the academy in Stuttgart in 1905. Even though the name of the artist is not well known now, Johannes Itten (1888-1967) who developed basic color theory in the field of art education, was one of Hölzel’s students and named the artist alongside Goethe and Chevreul in his book Art of Color. Itten’s theories and practices taught in the Bauhaus “preliminary course,” in fact, owed much to Hölzel’s teaching, and herein lies the direct relationship between Hölzel and the Bau- haus. However, Hölzel’s indirect contribution to the Bauhaus was much more fundamental. Not only did Itten bring Hölzel’s ideas to the Bauhaus but Oskar Schlemmer (1888–1943), a master of the Bauhaus theater workshop, had also been Hölzel’s student at the Stuttgart Acad- emy with some other Bauhaus students involved. Hölzel attracted many eager students who consequently formed a group called “Hölzel Circle.” This paper first looks at the situation at the academy just before Hölzel’s appointment. The academy and applied art school had a close relationship and there was a perspective to unite art and applied art in the background. It is noteworthy that Bernhard Pankok (1872-1943) was appointed to Königliche Lehr- und Versuchswerkstätte [the Royal Teaching and Experimen- tal Workshop] in Stuttgart in 1901 and engaged in the reorganization of the academies.
