Reiki Energy Medicine: Enhancing the Healing Process by Alice Moore, RN, BS, Reiki Master Hartford Hospital Dept.of Integrative Medicine, Hartford, CT With increasing frequency and confidence, we speak of Energy Medicine (also known as “energy work”) as if it was a new form of therapy for our patients’ ailments. Not so. Thousands of years ago ancient cultures understood intuitively what scientific research and practitioners world-wide are confirming today about the flow (or lack of flow) of energy in the body and, how the use of energy therapies can enhance the healing process. As well known medical surveys report approximately 50% of the American public using some form of complementary or alternative therapy, “energy work” is among the ten most frequently used. Research has shown that these therapies (often called “mind-body-spirit techniques”) can help decrease anxiety, diminish pain, strengthen the immune system, and accelerate healing, whether by simply inducing the “relaxation response” (and reversing the “stress response” and subsequent impacts on the body, illness, and disease) or, by more complex mechanisms. When patients choose these options, there is often a greater sense of participation in healing and restoration of health and, patient satisfaction is often increased in the process. It was with this understanding that Women’s Health Services at Hartford Hospital (in collaboration with Alice Moore, RN, BS, Reiki Master and Volunteer Services) began to integrate Reiki healing touch (one of the most well known forms of “energy work” ) on the inpatient gynecological surgical unit in 1997. Patients have been very pleased to be offered an option that is so relaxing and helps decrease their anxiety as well as their discomfort. -

His fiction has appeared in ZONE 3, Puerto del Sol, and Hobart, among other publications. He selected to write about this topic simply because he has always been fascinated with astral projection and lucid dreaming. He tried to achieve this state while researching and writing the paper. The astral body appears in many different cultures throughout time and throughout the world. In Egypt, the “KA was not the soul of man . but its vehicle” (Muldoon & Carrington, 2011, p. xxii). In the Qur’an, Muhammad’s astral body travels in the Isra and Mi’raj story. And, among other sacred and secular texts, the astral body appears in Hindu scripture, Taoist practice, and even Christianity. In his article regarding the afterlife, Woolger (2014) notes that “in such journeys in the world religions and innumerable tribal practices” scholars have “described a common pattern of ‘ascent’, which is to say an ecstatic, mystical or out-of body experience, wherein the spiritual traveler leaves the physical body and travels in his/her subtle body into ‘higher’ realms” (para. 4). Dually, this quotation makes apparent the historical depth of astral projection as well as uses specific terms—spiritual, mystical, and the idea of ‘higher’ realms—that separates astral projection from other types of out-of body experiences (OBEs). -

ARTICLES AND ESSAYS AUTOMATIC WRITING AND THE BOOK OF MORMON: AN UPDATE Brian C. Hales At a Church conference in 1831, Hyrum Smith invited his brother to explain how the Book of Mormon originated. Joseph declined, saying: “It was not intended to tell the world all the particulars of the coming forth of the Book of Mormon.”1 His pat answer—which he repeated on several occasions—was simply that it came “by the gift and power of God.”2 Attributing the Book of Mormon’s origin to supernatural forces has worked well for Joseph Smith’s believers, then as well as now, but not so well for critics who seem certain natural abilities were responsible. For over 180 years, several secular theories have been advanced as explanations.3 The more popular hypotheses include plagiarism (of the Solomon Spaulding manuscript),4 collaboration (with Oliver Cowdery, Sidney Rigdon, etc.),5 1. India OVER and over again the abstruse and mooted question of Rebirth or Reincarnation has crept out during the first ten years of the Theosophical Society's existence. It has been alleged on prima facie evidence, that a notable discrepancy was found between statements made in Isis Unveiled, Volume I, pp. 351-2, and later teachings from the same pen and under the inspiration of the same Master.[ See charge and answer, in Theosophist. Grassroots networks and movements are increasingly regarded as agents of change, with a critical role to play in agroecological transition as well as broader socio-environmental transformation. Permaculture is one such movement, with a provocative perspective on agriculture and human-environment relationships more broadly. Despite its relatively broad international distribution and high public profile, permaculture has remained relatively isolated from scientific research. From Witchcraft to Pseudoscience Entertaining Satan: Witchcraft and the Culture of Early New England. By John Putnam Demos. Oxford University Press, New York, 1982. 543 pp. $29.95. Michael R. Dennett N SEVENTEENTH-CENTURY New England, in more cases than not, the I verdict in trials of individuals accused of being witches was "Not guilty."1 This is just one of the tidbits of information about the witch trials in early America found in John Demos's book, Entertaining Satan. It is rich in historic detail excavated from old court records at the cost of untold hours of research. Entertaining Satan is an important look into the past, and in particular it provides a view of how the paranormal was viewed three centuries ago. Demos gives the reader in-depth characterizations of some of the alleged witches (no light accom plishment in view of the incompleteness of available data). He also makes some effort to analyze the New England communities and their role in the events. It is is in the assessment of seventeenth-century New England and of witchcraft and how it relates to our day that this book fails. Discussing the idea of witchcraft and the trials, the author writes: "Our own culture accords a measure of tolerance to such conflicts; but in early New England the situation was probably quite different." He refers to the New England of this time as "premodern" and implies a connection between witchcraft and the premodern nature of the society. Although Demos never defines the premodern society, the implication is that it is different from a modern society. -

Geists revel in the pain after being unable to feel for so long. Polluted Blood Geists protect their Sin-eaters from poisons, toxins, and anything other than recreational drugs and alcohol. Sin-eaters add their Psyche to resist poisons and disease. Ectoplasmic Flesh Any time a Sin-eater takes damage, she can instead bulwark it, spending plasm to ignore damage for a scene. Put a dot in the box of any attack the Sin-eater bulwarks, and if she takes more damage, it goes over the box of the dot. This is limited by Plasm per turn limits, and is obviously supernatural, with milky white smoke rising from the wound as Plasm bleeds through clothing and ignores the wind. Last Resort Even denied healing or Plasm, a Sin-eater has the ability to use Death to harvest energy. Old Death, destroying a Memento, is a reflexive Resolve + Occult action that gives a Sin-eater Health equal to the destroyed Memento. New death, murder, requires a Sin-eater to sacrifice another human life, heals the Sin-eater fully, and immediately causes a Synergy loss. Resurrection Whenever a Sin-eater dies, her Geist returns her to life the next dawn or dusk (whichever comes first) with a caul over her eyes. This only gives a Sin-eater back their rightmost health box, costs two dots of permanent Synergy, and the caul reveals another person dying in the Sin-eater's stead, based on her Threshold. -

ABORIGINAL BELIEFS AND REINCARNATION Marjorie Crawley Although reincarnation has been believed over thousands of years among a variety of widely dispersed cultures, apart from the Celtic heritage of many Europeans it is not a concept that is part of our European Australian understanding of the nature of man and his relation- ship to the world. In recent years, however, with the intrusion of Eastern religions, we have been given more opportunity to attempt to understand, if not accept, categories of thought foreign to our own, yet difficulties in understanding the concept of reincarnation persist. For it has been expressed in doctrines that have changed according to the understanding of wisdom, and the needs of the people during the passing ages, even within the same religious tradition. There is also doubt as to whether it was correct to attribute reincarnation beliefs to some cultures, pointing to an indescision as to what counts as evidence and how to interpret it. 1 It is not surprising therefore, to find conflict of opinion as to whether the Aranda believe in reincarnation. Early this century, Baldwin Spencer and F.J. Gillen were cited for the affirmative, and Carl Strehlow for the negative. 2 More recently, T.G.H. Strehlow supported the view, The father of the young initiate then takes the hand of his son, leads him to the cluster, and places the smooth round stone into his hands. Cinematic Ghosts: Haunting and Spectrality from Silent Cinema to the Digital Era. Edited by Murray Leeder. Bloomsbury Academic, 2015 (307 pages). Anton Karl Kozlovic Murray Leeder’s exciting new book sits comfortably alongside The Haunted Screen: Ghosts in Literature & Film (Kovacs), Ghost Images: Cinema of the Afterlife (Ruffles), Dark Places: The Haunted House in Film (Curtis), Popular Ghosts: The Haunted Spaces of Everyday Culture (Blanco and Peeren), The Spectralities Reader: Ghost and Haunting in Contemporary Cultural Theory (Blanco and Peeren), The Ghostly and the Ghosted in Literature and Film: Spectral Identities (Kröger and Anderson), and The Spectral Metaphor: Living Ghosts and the Agency of Invisibility (Peeren) amongst others. Within his Introduction Leeder claims that “[g]hosts have been with cinema since its first days” (4), that “cinematic double exposures, [were] the first conventional strategy for displaying ghosts on screen” (5), and that “[c]inema does not need to depict ghosts to be ghostly and haunted” (3). However, despite the above-listed texts and his own reference list (9–10), Leeder somewhat surprisingly goes on to claim that “this volume marks the first collection of essays specifically about cinematic ghosts” (9), and that the “principal focus here is on films featuring ‘non-figurative ghosts’—that is, ghosts supposed, at least diegetically, to be ‘real’— in contrast to ‘figurative ghosts’” (10). In what follows, his collection of fifteen essays is divided across three main parts chronologically examining the phenomenon. Part One of the book is devoted to the ghosts of precinema and silent cinema. In Chapter One, “Phantom Images and Modern Manifestations: Spirit Photography, Magic Theater, Trick Films, and Photography’s Uncanny”, Tom Gunning links “Freud’s uncanny, the hope to use modern technology to overcoming [sic] death or contact the afterlife, and the technologies and practices that led to cinema” (10).
