Mr. Morton was given a contract in the spring of 1979 to restore the original paint to animals and four chariots and the outer rim. This project was completed 1V2 years later. Discovered during the restoration was a great amount of the original gold leaf and painted decora-· tion, making this a priceless treasure among Ameri­ ca's carousels. Research, which is expected to lead to the recon­ struction of portions that are suspected to be missing, is continuing. A certificate of appreciation was given to Art Reblltz, who restored the old bond organ. by lob McOelland. But it was the people of Kit Carson County who were 'the backbone of this whole thing", he stressed. "You made this whole thing possible; it would not have come about without you," he told the crowd, "you, and that old 'nitty gritty' work!" Project director Jo Downey told of the five-year plan and what went into the restoration of the carousel: the siding, park, concrete, landscaping and actual restoration of the machine itself, including the organ, paintings and animals. She reminded the crowd of the 1976 fair, when the completely restored Wurlitzer Monster Military Band Organ played for the first time in decades; that it was only one of two in existence and the only one owned publically. She told of the work, the hours, the money, the planning and the dreams that brought about the restoration, including the "unbelievable strong support" of countless county people, and many, many others. In addition to getting to visit parks in a different culture than we see here, it is also a great opportunity to spend time with fellow enthusiasts and grow friendships while enjoying our common interests. When Scandinavia Sojourn was announced for the summer of 2011, I knew it was a trip I could not miss. Since the 2009 trip was my first trip to Europe I thought that there was no way the over- all experience could be better in Scandinavia. I was wrong. We landed in Helsinki, Finland around 1300 the day before we were required to be at the hotel to meet with the group. Helsinki is an interesting city and fairly new compared to many cities in Europe. Walking around the city you can see the Russian influence in the city’s architecture. In fact, many movies during the cold war would use Helsinki to shoot scenes that are supposed to be set in the Soviet Union. After making our way to the Crowne Plaza Hotel and getting a quick lunch at the hotel restaurant we decided to spend the remaining time that afternoon checking out some of the sites around our hotel. Some of these sites included the Temppeliaukio Church inside of a rock formation, the train station, Routatientori Square and National Theater, and a couple of the city’s art museums.

The modern age of the mausoleum and the “Call of a Better Way” began, even though above-ground entombment is a long-standing custom. A mausoleum is an alternative to ground burial. It offers crypts for entombment and niches for cremation. It is dry, clean and secure, and protected from the elements. Mt. Crest Abbey was built by the Portland Mausoleum Company, and its construction was completed in the spring of 1914. Mt. Crest Abbey was dedicated on Memorial Day, May 30th of that year. The mausoleum is one of six similar mausoleums built by the Portland Mausoleum Company in Oregon between 1910 and 1919. The Portland Mausoleum Company went out of business in 1929--the same year that ushered in the Great Depression. Mt. Crest Abbey was designed by prominent architect Ellis Lawrence of Portland and his firm Lawrence & Holford.
