  • Let's Get Ready to Unbundle!
LET’S GET READY TO UNBUNDLE! It’s Time for the UFC to Offer Individual Fights for Purchase Nick Cornor Abstract A bedrock principle of U.S. Copyright law normally dictates that when a person steals your original work of authorship, a court should issue an injunc- tion and require the violator to pay damages. For centuries this principle has sufficed; however, a lack of deep-pocket defendants and continued lobbying efforts by internet service providers have made this principle untenable when applied to illegal online streaming. This is especially true for the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), a mixed martial arts promoter that has seen its live broadcasts pirated over the internet at an alarming rate, thereby threaten- ing the bulk of its revenue. This Comment advocates that the UFC unbundle its current pay- per-view business model in favor of charging market-based prices for each individual fight. The primary benefit of this approach includes increased rev- enue for the UFC by enticing consumers away from illegal online streaming with lower prices. Potential adjacent benefits include reforming fighter com- pensation schemes, incentivizing fighters to promote their own individual fights, easing controversies regarding unionization efforts by the fighters, and providing the UFC with greater marketing data. Therefore, by unbundling its business model, the UFC will ultimately be able to bypass the shortcomings of U.S. Copyright law and take the lead in a digital media landscape already changing at lightning speeds. * J.D., South Texas College of Law Houston; M.A., University of Oklahoma, 2013; B.S. CAST REVEALED FOR THE ULTIMATE FIGHTER®: TEAM McGREGOR vs. TEAM FABER Las Vegas – Competitors from 11 different countries have been cast for the next season of The Ultimate Fighter® led by UFC® interim featherweight champion and proud Irishman Conor McGregor, opposite former WEC® featherweight champion Urijah “The California Kid” Faber. The premiere episode, debuting on September 9 at 10 p.m. ET on FOX Sports 1, will showcase 32 fighters competing for one of 16 spots featuring eight Europeans and eight Americans and the opportunity to be coached by two of the sport’s best athletes. The Europeans will be led by Dublin’s own McGregor (18-2, fighting out of Dublin, Ireland), while the American squad will be under the tutelage of Faber (32-8, fighting out of Sacramento, Calif.). The fighters from around the globe will descend upon the Las Vegas desert for a chance at a UFC contract and the ability to be coached by two of the sports’ best. Given the history between McGregor and Faber’s Team Alpha Male gym, paired with national pride on the line, the teams’ rivalry will be fierce and competition intense. McGregor took the MMA world by storm when he burst onto the UFC scene in 2013, quickly amassing a 6-0 record inside the Octagon® en route to becoming the interim featherweight champion. Currently riding a 14-fight winning streak, “The Notorious” is set to unify his title with pound-for-pound king Jose Aldo at UFC 194 on December 12 in Las Vegas. This will be Faber’s second stint as coach, having served as head coach for season 15 against rival Dominick Cruz in 2012.

Plus, Karyn Bryant adds reports. UFC TONIGHT host Daniel Cormier on if Al Iaquinta deserved a performance bonus last Saturday: “He came back after two years off, and not only did he beat the legend, Diego Sanchez, he smashed him. Who puts Diego out like that? Was he mad he didn’t get the bonus? Of course. They should have given it to him.” UFC TONIGHT host Kenny Florian on if Jones should take a tune-up fight: “He did not look that good against Ovince Saint Preux after his last layoff. I think he should take a tune-up fight. He fights off of confidence and rhythm. He’s better off taking a tune-up fight. But the bigger question is who would he fight?” Cormier on if Jon Jones should take a tune-up fight before fighting him for the title: “Take the fight with me, Jon Jones. UFC® DEBUTS IN MONCTON WITH CLASH BETWEEN LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT KNOCKOUT ARTISTS (#2) VOLKAN OEZDEMIR AND (#9) ANTHONY SMITH Moncton, Canada – UFC® will debut in Moncton, New Brunswick with a battle of light heavyweight contenders between No.2- ranked Volkan Oezdemir and No.9 Anthony Smith. UFC FIGHT NIGHT®: VOLKAN vs. SMITH goes down Saturday, October 27 from Avenir Centre and will air live on FS1. The event will broadcast in Canada on TSN and RDS. A former 205-pound title challenger, Oezdemir (15-2, fighting out of Coconut Creek, Fla., USA by way of Fribourg, Switzerland) tore through the UFC ranks following his arrival in early 2017. He now aims to stop a surging contender and stake his claim among the division’s elite. Previously a middleweight mainstay, Smith (30-13, fighting out of Omaha, Neb., USA) has wasted no time since moving up to light heavyweight this June. Over the course of a seven-week span, he delivered spectacular first-round knockout wins over former champions Rashad Evans and Mauricio Rua. With momentum on his side, he now aims to continue his ascent up the light heavyweight ranks. Additional bouts on the card include: Light heavyweight contenders collide when No.10-ranked Misha Cirkunov (13-4, fighting out of Toronto, Canada by way of Riga, Latvia) faces No.13 Patrick Cummins (10-4, fighting out of Boca Raton, Fla., USA) In a clash of dangerous finishers, Gian Villante (16-10, fighting out of Bellmore, N.Y., USA) takes on Ed Herman (24-13 1NC, fighting out of Portland, Ore., USA) Artem Lobov (14-14-1 1NC, fighting out of Dublin, Ireland by way of Nizhny Novgorod, Russia) returns to action against Zubaira Tukhugov (18-4, fighting out of Grozny, Chechen Republic, Russia) Atlantic Canada’s Gavin Tucker (10-1, fighting out of Halifax, Canada) moves down to bantamweight against Andre Soukhamthath (12-6, fighting out of Lake Worth, Fla.
