Start your review of Woodwork: Wallace Wood May 07, Michael Magy rated it it was amazing Shelves: comic-book-art. I discovered the art of Wally Wood as a young comic reader when I saw the smooth lines graceful body renderings in Marvel Comics 'Daredevil' 5, first series, to for me most notably in 'Daredevil' 7 where he redesigned the hero's costume from yellow to red, a thru staple to present day, and had him battling the Sub-Mariner. Those battle scenes were carefully plotted, drawn, and balletic in their structure. I hooked more into Wood than the character Since I couldn't afford to buy the old originals I had to wait far into adulthood to get reprints, compilations and specialty books featuring Wood Woodwork: Wallace Wood 1927-1981 his best. Wood died in Woodwork: Wallace Wood 1927-1981 didn't notice. I was otherwise occupied in living. Many years later I did notice, and began reassessing and appreciating with mature eyes the work which had so captured my attention as an adolescent. I am not an artist. What my mind can imagine my hand cannot translate into recognizable forms. At my best, I produce scratching and squigglings. What he conceived he Woodwork: Wallace Wood 1927-1981, beautifully. Until his body refused to cooperate with him. This he could not accept. He used his creative hand to opt himself out of his dilemma, not creatively but effectively. He left behind a legacy of his talent for those who would look to appreciate it. I did. His pre-published pencil drawings where he encapsulated what he wanted to later fully develop; pen drawings, inked page art, unique panel structures for pages, comic book covers, frontpieces for hardcover and paperback books as well as their covers, single page renderings for science fiction and fantasy magazines, and complete stories in various genres fresh from his drawing board to my eyes provided them a feast of creativity few other artists have offered. This book, printed inis compiled from many contributors and arose from an exhibition of his art at Casal Solleric in Palma City on the Spanish island of Majorca in I read through it, took a magnifying glass to the many pages of art, and wallowed in the varieties and depth of his talent in a way I never before was able. If you are a fan of EC Comics, particularly its science fiction and fantasy offerings, this is a book for you. If you are a fan of the beautifully bawdy and raunchy art once offered in the men's Woodwork: Wallace Wood 1927-1981 of the s and s, this book is for you.

Remember the tale of the spider that saved a pig's life or the animal-themed board game that came to life or the elephant king and his family, or the three pets on an incredible journey or the rabid dog or the animal collective that lived on a farm? Well, they are all here in this issue, and these stories will never be the same! Available in December 2009! • Comic-Con ‘18 1 CAPS Invades 0 San Diego
Summer 2018 CON SEASON THE COMIC ART PROFESSIONAL SOCIETY President’s Message Greetings, CAPSers! Before I accepted the position of President, I sought advice from a number of my predecessors and other long-term CAPS members. One of the suggestions I heard was that CAPS may have outlived its usefulness, that all the things it was created to do are now done online. I don’t believe that’s entirely true. Yes, the Internet allows us to continue that mission and broaden our reach beyond the geographic boundaries of Southern California. While our local group is always the center of CAPS, there’s no reason why we can’t or shouldn’t increase our Associate Membership, and the internet can facilitate that. Social Media offers incredible opportunities for networking, sharing information, and socializing among cartoonists, but I believe that this merely alters the methods and priorities of CAPS, but it doesn’t eliminate our purpose. In fact, one aspect of our mission is now more important than ever: actual face-to-face interaction, getting to know each other in real life. This is why we are experimenting with involvement with conventions. In the past, it never made sense for us to have a table at cons, because we are not a “consumer facing” organization; apart from hosting members at a booth for sales, sketches and signings, we don’t have a lot to offer the public as an organization. Handing out brochures at a table is not going to reach many people who are eligible for membership. But as conventions become more expensive to table at, and as the number of conventions continues to multiply, it seems that a CAPS table is a good way to provide our members with space that they might not otherwise have.

  • POW! Capturing Superheroes, Chess & Comics Exhibition Brochure
From the Curator The World Chess Hall of Fame is thrilled to present another family- friendly exhibition, POW! Capturing Superheroes, Chess & Comics. With over 200 comic books, 18 limited edition or rare chess sets, original drawings, posters, a photo booth, dress-up station, illustration room, and books and toys, this show will delight kids of all ages. The ancient game of chess was created in the 6th century and immediately, the pieces became a way to tell stories, especially about the battle of good and evil. As the game moved through Asia and then to Europe, the pieces were transformed to reflect current political moods, historical heroes, as well as legendary figures. Similarly, the stories and characters in comics and then later comic books would do the same thing. The Golden Age of Comics in America began in the 1930s—especially with the introduction of the first superhero, in Action Comics #1 on April 18, 1938. Created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, Superman would only have to wait less than a decade before becoming a chess piece on the cover of the Action Comics Vol. 1, No. 112 in September, 1947. The height of comic sales took place during World War II, with a surge of pro- American characters, before it began to see a decline. Coincidentally, the “Golden Age of Chess” in America also took place during the height of the Cold War as American Bobby Fischer sought to topple 29 years of Russian dominance of the World Chess Championship. A game of war, battle, strategic thinking, and artistic moves lent itself well to the nature of comics and their characters.
