A striking feature of the Mediterranean flora concerns the high rates of narrow endemism within many regions. The prevailing paradigm for the evolution of such endemism relies on an important role of geographic isola- tion and allopatric speciation. Until recently there has been little work on the precise ecological differences among endemic plants and their congeners in the Mediterranean region and the potential role of ecological spe- cialisation in isolation and speciation. This paper has two objectives. First, we evaluate general ecological dif- ferences among endemic and widespread congeners in the flora of the western Mediterranean. The results and review of the literature attest to consistent patterns of ecological differentiation among endemic species and their more widespread congeners. Second, we present results of a detailed study of morphological, molecular and ecological differentiation in a group of spring-flowering Mediterranean Cyclamen species.

ECOLOGIE D'UNE ESPÉCE ENDÉMIQUE EN MILIEU EVSULAIRE: CYCLAMEN BALEARICUM WILLK. AUX ÍLES BALEARES par MAX DEBUSSCHE*. MICHEL GRANDJANNY*, GENEVIÉVE DEBUSSCHE*, MAURICI MUS**, NÉSTOR TORRES*** & PEDRO FRAGA ARGUIMBAU**** Resumen DEBUSSCHE, M., M. GRANDJANNY, G. DEBUSSCHE, M. MUS, N. TORRES & P. FRAGA ARGUIMBAU (1997).

  • Balearic Vegetation
Plant Formations in the Balearic BioProvince Peter Martin Rhind Balearic Evergreen Oak Forests Like much of the Mediterranean, the natural plant formation, is evergreen oak forest dominated by Quercus ilex (holm oak) although today Pinus halepensis (aleppo pine) is probably the most common tree on the islands. Other tree species include Arbutus unedo strawberry tree, while the shrub layer comprises Asparagus acutifolius, Daphne gnidium (Mediterranean mezereon), Erica arborea (tree heather), Phillyrea latifolia and the near endemic Rhamnus ludovici-salvatoris (Rhamnaceae). The ground layer includes another species, Cyclamen balearicum (Myrsinaceae), that was originally thought to be endemic, but this species has since been recorded in the south of France. Balearic Olive Woods The dominant tree here is Olea europaea var. silvestris (wild olive) and Ceratonia silique (carob). Typical shrubs include Cneorum tricoccon, Euphorbia dendroides (tree spurge), Ephedra fragilis (joint-pine) and Chamaerops humulis (dwarf fan palm) may also be present. Ground layer species typically include Arum pictum, Asparagus albus and A. stipularis. Balearic Rosemary Garrigue The main shrubs in this formation include Rosmarius officinalis (rosemary) and Erica multiflora. Rosemary can be found from sea level to the top of the highest mountain, but the endemic variety palaui is confined to the mountains. Other important shrubs include Anthyllus cytisoides, Globularia alypum, Lavendula dentata and the endemic Genista lucida (Fabaceae). Characteristic herbaceous species include Gladiolus illyricus and various ‘insect’ orchids such as Ophrys tenthredinifera sawfly orchid and O. bombylifera bumblebee orchid. Endemics include Smilax aspera var. balearica (Liliaceae). Balearic Mountain Garrigue Most Balearic endemics occur in this zone. The endemic shrubs Hypericum balearicum (Hypericaceae) or Teucrium subspinosum (Lamiaceae) are two of the most conspicuous species.

Its distribution area lies at the northern margin of distribution area of the Cyclamen genus. Several studies have focused on the pollinators and consumers of representatives of this genus, but they mention only some more important animal species. The aim of our study was to determine the species spectrum of animals having a relationship to C. fatrense in its natural environment and to define mutual relationships between this plant and animals based on comparison of phenologic manifestations of cyclamen and known ecologic data about its visitors. In course of different phenophases of C. fatrense we recorded 127 invertebrate taxa on this plant. Among them 7 taxa were identified as consumers, 29 taxa as potential consumers, 5 taxa as potential pollinators and 91 had an indifferent relationship to the cyclamen. Damaging or direct consummation of cyclamens by vertebrates has not been observed. Key words: Cyclamen fatrense; pollinators; consumers Introduction Affre et al. 1995; Affre & Thompson 1997; Schwartz- Tzachor et al. 2006).

  • The Magic of Cyclamen by John Lonsdale
Volume 30, Issue 1 Winter, 2020 Piedmont Chapter North American Rock Garden Society Chapel Hill, Durham, Raleigh, NC https://www.piedmontnargs.org The Trillium www.facebook.com/piedmontNARGS Web site: https://www.piedmont The Magic of Cyclamen By John Lonsdale Many genera of alpine or rock garden plants contain species that span a broad spectrum of horticultural interest, from the stunningly beautiful through the botanically interesting to the downright ugly. This is true of several genera with- in the family Primulaceae, including Primula itself. By contrast, the genus Cyclamen, also in the Primulaceae, is one of few whose numerous species and cultivars are universally appealing. Cyclamen are endowed with charming flowers ranging in color from near red through pink to white, frequently with contrasting markings at the nose which can extend into the petals; some are even bicolored. Flower shape varies considerably, including the slightly dumpy C. parviflorum and some C. coum, the propellers of C. alpinum, or the long, elegant, twisted gems of some C. graecum. If further encouragement is needed, different Cyclamen species can be found in flower at any time from July through to May. They possess a variety of fragrances, and variably shaped, beautifully marked leaves which give interest and much pleasure long after the blooms have gone. The foliage alone justifies growing them and causes the afflicted to raise vast numbers of plants from seed in search of a further extension of the myriad of leaf patterns already available. The ease of growing most Cyclamen species adds to their horticultural value. Cyclamen hederifolium, C. purpu- rascens and C.
