Th erefore I call on Death, I wish to dive once more Into the void from which I came. Th ese lines appear as a foreword to the autograph manuscript of the unfi nished Sonata in D Minor for violin and piano (57)*. Th eir authorship is not stated, although if it were indeed Lekeu who penned these lines, they are undoubtedly the most disturbing that he would ever write. How could a youth of fi fteen come to express such sentiments? Who was he? Lekeu’s character and personality are clearly revealed in the many and frequent letters he wrote to the various members of his family and in particular to Marcel Guimbaud, his best friend and seven years his senior. Lekeu comes into sharp focus as we read the immense amount of letters that have survived. He was enthusiastic and overfl owing with vitality and the desire to compose; he was witty and appreciative of the pleasures of life and of the fl esh; he was curious about everything, a cultured and avid reader, and was passionate about painting; he also gave rather abrupt opinions on both classical and contemporary music. His writings are direct, frank, amusing, and sometimes sarcastic; he often also employs the Walloon dialect. In short, after having read his correspondence it is almost impossible to believe that sentiments such as those quoted above were predominant in his character. * Th ese numbers refer to the catalogue of Lekeu’s complete works drawn up by Luc Verdebout.

    Guillaume Lekeu’s Sonata for Piano and Violin: A Performance Guide by Dongfang Zhang A Research Paper Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Music Arts Approved April 2018 by the Graduate Supervisory Committee: Russell Ryan, Chair Andrew Campbell Rodney Rogers ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY May 2018 ABSTRACT This research paper examines Guillaume Lekeu’s Sonata for Piano and Violin (1892) from the perspective of a collaborative pianist, providing historical background, an analysis of the work’s musical structure, and performance practice insights. Each chapter offers the performer a deeper understanding of various aspects concerning the work, including an in-depth analysis of cyclical features used by Lekeu. Lekeu was strongly influenced by his teacher, César Franck, and in particular by Franck’s use of cyclic techniques, which profoundly impacted Lekeu’s Sonata for Piano and Violin. The cyclic treatment, which includes cyclic themes, cyclic motives, and non- cyclic themes is discussed, enabling performers to achieve a relevant structural approach to this work. A performance guide includes practical advice for the interpretation and performance of the work, along with piano pedaling suggestions. French composers were inspired by the great German composers of the Romantic era, and they created their own defined national style that emerged toward the end of the 19th century. The Franco-Belgian composers’ special emphasis on tone, timbre and color encouraged a more individual, personally interpretative approach. These devices underscore the importance and influence a performer can have on the outcome of a piece. I researched the relationship between composers and violinists at a time when the Franco-Belgian style developed and flourished. The Franco-Belgian school of violin playing emerged from the Paris and Brussels conservatories as well as the symbiotic relationship between the performers and composers. Three recitals in collaboration with pianist David Ballena, which comprise this dissertation project, were performed at the University of Maryland. Each recital featured music for violin and piano from 1870 through 1930. The repertoire was chosen to reflect a performer’s influence on a composer.
