HEROES OF THE RAF FIRE SERVICE B CREW RAF MARHAM 1982 ITUATED ON THE EDGE of the fens in Norfolk, the airfield at Marham has its origins way back in the very beginnings of military aviation. Following construction in S 1915, it saw service as a Royal Flying Corps (RFC) aerodrome during the Great War, both as a home defence airfield and a flying training unit. In 1919 it was closed, but sixteen years later work started on construction of the RAF Station we know today. The airfield resumed operations in 1937 and flying continued throughout the Second World War, during which thousands of bombing missions were launched, and the Station was attacked several times by enemy aircraft. Despite only having grass strips for runways, the Wellingtons, Stirlings and Mosquitos operated with devastating effect, and during the latter stages of the conflict RAF Marham was a main operating base for elite 8 Group Pathfinder Force (PFF) Squadrons. After the war, having now had new concrete runways laid, Marham continued to operate in the role of a bomber station, and in 1956 became part of the RAF’s V-Bomber Force, operating Valiants and later Victors. Long after the other V-Bombers were retired, Marham still flew Victors in the air to air refuelling role until they were finally retired in October 1993. One aircraft that didn’t survive to that date however, was XL232. Following construction at the Handley Page factory at Radlett, near St Albans, it was delivered to the RAF on 13 March 1962 as a Victor B2 bomber, capable of delivering a Blue Steel nuclear stand-off missile, or up to 35 x 1000lb bombs. -

Military Operations in Libya Standard Note: SN/IA/5909 Last updated: 24 October 2011 Author: Claire Taylor Section International Affairs and Defence Section On 17 March 2011 the UN Security Council adopted resolution 1973 (2011), under Chapter VII of the UN Charter, which authorised the use of force, including enforcement of a no-fly zone, enforcement of a UN arms embargo against Libya and to protect civilians and civilian areas targeted by the Qaddafi regime and its supporters. The weekend of 19/20 March saw French, British and US military action begin under Operation Odyssey Dawn. By the end of March command of that operation had been gradually transitioned to NATO. On 23 March NATO assumed command of operations to enforce the UN arms embargo. The transfer of command responsibility for the no-fly zone was agreed on 24 March; while the decision to transfer command and control for all military operations in Libya was taken on 27 March. NATO formally assumed command under Operation Unified Protector at 0600 hours on 31 March 2011. Military operations have been ongoing for seven months. During that time there have been criticisms of stalemate in the military campaign, allegations over burden sharing among NATO Member States, and questions over the existence of a viable exit strategy. Following the fall of Sirte and the death of Colonel Gadaffi, Libya’s transitional government declared liberation on 23 October 2011. The NATO Secretary General also confirmed in a statement that a preliminary decision had been taken to end Operation Unified Protector on 31 October 2011. However, he also went on to state that NATO would monitor the situation and retain the capacity to respond to threats to civilians if necessary. -

Photo: Tom Pietrasik/Oxfam WORKING FOR THE FEW Political capture and economic inequality Economic inequality is rapidly increasing in the majority of countries. The wealth of the world is divided in two: almost half going to the richest one percent; the other half to the remaining 99 percent. The World Economic Forum has identified this as a major risk to human progress. Extreme economic inequality and political capture are too often interdependent. Left unchecked, political institutions become undermined and governments overwhelmingly serve the interests of economic elites to the detriment of ordinary people. Extreme inequality is not inevitable, and it can and must be reversed quickly. www.oxfam.org SUMMARY In November 2013, the World Economic Forum released its ‘Outlook on the Global Agenda 2014’, in which it ranked widening income disparities as the second greatest worldwide risk in the coming 12 to 18 months. Based on those surveyed, inequality is ‘impacting social stability within countries and threatening security on a global scale.’ Oxfam shares its analysis, and wants to see the 2014 World Economic Forum make the commitments needed to counter the growing tide of inequality. Some economic inequality is essential to drive growth and progress, rewarding those with talent, hard earned skills, and the ambition to innovate and take entrepreneurial risks. However, the extreme levels of wealth concentration occurring today threaten to exclude hundreds of millions of people from realizing the benefits of their talents and hard work. -

I February 1989 A preliminary documentary research was undertaken to assess I historical significance and archaeological poten~ial of the Sea Breeze Estates Site (see Figure 1, Location of Project Site). This assessment relied mainly on maps, printed sources, and, to a lesser degree, informal interviews with residents. In addition, I the archaeological office of the New York State MUseum was contacted to determine the number and whereabouts of any relevant prehistoric sites. And finally, the New York City Landmarks I Preservation Commission was consulted regarding the island's landmarked properties. -

Introduction The school cadet organisation originates from 1859, when schools at Eton, Harrow, Rugby, Rossall, Felsted, Hurstpierpoint, Winchester and Tonbridge formed armed uniformed units as part of a national reserve to counter a perceived threat from abroad. By 1900, cadet units were established in over 100 schools across the country and in 1908, these units were re-titled the Officer Training Corps (OTC). In 1948, the OTC was renamed the Combined Cadet Force. The aim of the Combined Cadet Force is to provide a framework through which young people develop the qualities of team work, self-reliance, resourcefulness, leadership and responsibility. A weekly programme of military training is designed to give young people at King’s a chance to exercise responsibility and leadership, to provide them with knowledge of our defence forces, and to encourage those who might be interested in becoming officers of the Armed Services. Uniform members of the Combined Cadet Force will regularly stay on Royal Air Forces bases, therefore it is important that cadets are able to demonstrate an awareness of the structure and organisation of the Royal Air Force, its role in the defence of the United Kingdom and her interests and the operations in which the Royal Air Force are currently engaged.
