This issue of Newsletter heralds the news that after seven years of establishment, the university has proved itself with NAAC 'A' Grade with a score of 3.06 in the first Cycle of accreditation. Central University of Punjab is one of the first newly established central universities to receive NAAC accreditation. Assessment and accreditation serve to understand the status of an institution in terms of its performance, related to the educational processes and outcomes, covering the curriculum, teaching-learning, evaluation, faculty, research, infrastructure, learning resources, organisation, governance, financial well-being, and student services. The credit for this achievement rests with the vision of the Vice-Chancellor and the vitality and tenacity with which students, faculty members, and staff members have been working. This ratification is bound to give more impetus to the university to excel in the fields of research and academics. In the present quarter also, the university has been supporting extracurricular activities, and several innovative and reformist events, such as Mathribhasha Diwas, Legal Awareness Programme, Fitness Camp, Anti-Terrorism Day, Yoga Week and Computer Literacy Programme that are meant to bring a positive change in and around the university. Besides these, several academic activities such as seminars, conferences and special lectures have also been organised in this quarter. The university has also signed MoUs with Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law, Patiala and Maharaja Ranjit Singh Punjab Technical University, Bathinda for making collective efforts to raise the bar of higher education. We hope that we can continue to endeavour to make this university one of the leading educational institutions in the world. Central University of Punjab Awarded “A” Grade by NAAC The NAAC peer-team for accreditation of CUPB visited the university from April 26- 30, 2016. The peer-team comprised of 8 members: Prof. Harish Padh, Vice – Chancellor, Sardar Patel University (Chairperson), Prof. A.V. Prasada Rao, Former Rector, Andhra University (coordinator), Prof. P. G. Marvania, Professor, Dept. of Economics, Saurashtra University, Dr. V. Rhymend Uthariaraj, NAAC Peer Team during the presentations Professor & Director, Ramanujan Computing Centre, Anna University, Prof. Smriti Swaroop, Former Director, Department of Special Education, SNDT Women’s University, Prof. T.V. Subbarao, Visiting Professor, National Law School of India University, Prof. Dr. S Anbazhagan, Professor & Director, Centre for Geoinformatics & Planetary Studies, Periyar University, and Prof. S. K. Jain, Professor & Head, Dept. of Biotechnology, Hamdard Institute of Medical Sciences & Research, Jamia Hamdard University. The Peer Team visit started with the presentations by the Vice Chancellor and the Director, IQAC about the structure, functions and the achievement of the university. The NAAC Team visited all the nineteen centres. The CoC of each centre made a presentation and showed them the facilities of their centre. The team visited the office of the Vice Chancellor, Registrar, Controller of Examinations, Finance Officer, 1 CUPB Newsletter Dean Students’ Welfare, NSS, Community College, Placement Cell, Students’ Counselling Cell and Internal Quality Assurance Cell. The members also visited various facilities of CUPB like Computer Centre, Library, Museum, Desalination Plant, Windmill, Sewerage Treatment Plant, Renewable Energy Resources (Solar Lights, Solar Water Heaters, Solar Photovoltaic Plant), Health Centre/Canteen/ Sports facilities/Day Care Centre, Hostels and Central Instrumentation Laboratory. The NAAC team members were impressed that the university operating from a mill shed has achieved such great heights and expressed appreciation about the way Self Study Report was written. With great zeal and efforts of the Vice-Chancellor, Director IQAC, Dean NAAC team walking around Academic Affairs, Registrar, Faculty, staff members and students of University Campus CUPB, the University got “A” grade in its very first cycle from NAAC. On June 1, 2016, the CUPB organised a function in the auditorium to celebrate the success. Efforts of IQAC, especially Ms. Poonam Rani were appreciated by the Vice-Chancellor, CUPB. Professor A. K. Dhawan, Director IQAC who made tireless efforts for this success, received a memento from the Vice- Chancellor on behalf of the faculty, staff and students of CUPB. Events ICSSR Sponsored National Workshop on “Research Methodology for Social Science Research Scholars” Centre for Education, Central University of Punjab organised an ICSSR sponsored National Workshop on “Research Methodology for Social Science Research Scholars” from March 1-11, 2016. Various experts like Prof. Surjit Singh, Retd. Prof. Government College, Jalandhar; Prof. S. C. Bhadwal, Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla; Dr. Kuldeep Kaur, Panjab University, Chandigarh; Dr. Meenakshi, Punjabi University, Patiala; Dr. Pranav Ranjan, NIIT, Prof. S. K. Bawa addressing the Jaipur, gave lectures and presentations on different aspects of social research scholars during the sciences. Thirty four research scholars took part in the workshop, out workshop of which, twenty nine were outsiders and five were from within the university itself. Matribhasha Diwas (Mother Tongue day) Celebration at the Central University of Punjab Centre for Classical and Modern Languages in collaboration with Centre for Comparative Literature organised Matribhasha Diwas celebration on March 3, 2016. It aimed to promote the dissemination of Mother tongues, an awareness of linguistic and cultural traditions in our country, and to inspire solidarity based on understanding, tolerance and dialogue. As CUPB boasts of a diversity of linguistic communities from all over India, and has students from 26 states of India, this celebration assumed greater importance. The celebration, by combining activities like singing of different regional songs and recitation of different poems from Kashmir to Kerala, focused on highlighting the linguistic diversity of our country and to draw the attention of the university fraternity to the A student performing on Matribhasha Diwas 2 CUPB Newsletter diversity of cultures in our country. Dr. Alpna Saini, CoC, Centre for Classical and Modern Languages, welcomed the gathering and introduced the programme. Prof. Rama Rao, Dean Academic Affairs delivered the Mother Tongue Day address. The Cultural Performances comprised of regional songs in more than fourteen different Indian languages. Honourable Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. R. K. Kohli, delivered the concluding remarks. Legal Awareness Programme to Commemorate International Women’s Day In order to celebrate International Women’s Day, Centre for Law organised a two-day Legal Awareness Programme on “Women Related Laws” in collaboration with National Commission for Women, New Delhi on March 8-9, 2016 at the university auditorium. The programme was inaugurated by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. R. K. Kohli, in the presence of eminent guests such as Prof. Nishtha Jaswal, Professor, Department of Law, Panjab University, Chandigarh; Prof. Rajesh Gill, Department of Sociology, Panjab University, Chandigarh; Mrs. Paramjit Kaur, Chairperson, Punjab State Women’s Commission, Prof. Nishtha Jaiswal presenting her Chandigarh; Ms. Laxmi Kanta Chawla, Former health minister, Govt. views to the audience of Punjab Adv. Mandeep Kaur Dhillion, & Adv. Amandeep Kaur Bajwa, Advocates, District Court, Bathinda; and many other participants from various fields of the society. Prof. Kohli urged the youth to come forward actively to accelerate the movement of women empowerment. Touching upon various issues like female foeticide and gender indiscrimination, he dwelled upon the challenges being faced by women in the society and the need to ensure the prevalence of the concept of gender justice at the grass root level and its practical implications. The event received huge response from within the university and form nearby districts as well as districts of adjoining states as 136 people got registered (24 Faculty, 100 Students, 12 others). Among the registered participants 72 were female and 64 were male. One-Day Acquaintance Programme of IUAC, New Delhi, at CUPB Centre for Geography and Geology in collaboration with Centre for Physical Sciences organised a One- Day Acquaintance Programme in the seminar hall of Central University of Punjab to provide awareness about the facilities available at Inter University Accelerator Centre (IUAC), New Delhi (an autonomous research center of UGC) and of the research opportunities in the field of Accelerator Organisers and participants of the programme posing Mass Spectrometry, Material Science, Nuclear for a group photo Physics, Atomic and Molecular Physics, Radiation Biology and other allied Interdisciplinary areas on April 4, 2016. The programme was funded by the IUAC, New Delhi. The programme commenced with a formal registration and an inaugural session. Prof. P. Ramarao, Dean Academic Affairs delivered the inaugural address.
