Maisie Lawrence Senior Publicist Created by Idris Elba and Kwame Kwei-Armah, this new collaboration is an 020 7831 7657 electrifying blend of drama, music and dance which follows one man’s journey [email protected] into the heart and soul of contemporary South Africa – with the audience at the centre of the action. The full cast includes: Christian Bradley; Lucy Briggs- Philippa Redfern Senior Publicist Owen; Sinéad Cusack; Kurt Egyiawan; Alfred Enoch; Anna-Kay Alicia 020 7831 7657 Gayle; Joan Iyiola; Anthony Matsena; Daniella May; Patrice Naiambana; [email protected] Mbulelo Ndabeni and Andile Sotiya. www.mif.co.uk Directed by Kwei-Armah, Artistic Director of London’s Young Vic, with music inspired by Elba’s album Mi Mandela, Tree is an exhilarating show about identity, family and belonging, seen through the eyes of one man on the toughest journey of his life. Elba will produce along with Green Door Pictures. It’s just 12 hours from London to his parents’ homeland, but to Kaleo (Alfred Enoch), South Africa is another world. A family tragedy finally forces him to visit for the first time – and as he takes his journey of healing, Kaleo must confront hidden histories and right the wrongs of the past. But first he must face the present: a shattered family, fighting to hold on to what they believe is theirs, in a nation haunted by the ghosts of its own turbulent past. Director Kwame Kwei-Armah said: “I feel genuinely privileged to be working with this incredible group of actors, dancers and musicians to bring to life our shared vision for Tree, inspired by Idris’s intoxicating Mi Mandela album. As a director and as a producer, what excites me most is our attempt to blur the genre lines; Tree places the audience, standing, at the centre of the action – almost like a club, or a gig – and at the same time it takes them on a theatrical journey with a narrative that emotionally engages. We held some workshops with Alfie Enoch earlier this year, and the atmosphere in that room was fascinating. Now that the wonderful Sinead Cusack has joined us, along with a phenomenally talented group of multi-disciplined artists, I cannot wait to get into rehearsals and prepare to bring that infectious energy to audiences at MIF and the Young Vic later this year.” Christian Bradley’s theatre credits include Orpheus Descending: Light & Shadow (Manchester Royal Exchange); Incoming (Hightide/Latitude); Lidless Page 1 of 7 (Trafalgar Studios); Macbeth (Shakespeare's Globe); Pan (Northern Stage); Bonduca (O.A.E.); Stovepipe (National Theatre/Hightide/Bush); Our Friends in The North (Northern Stage); The Seduction of God (The Wrestling School); Macbeth (West Yorkshire Playhouse); Paradise Lost (Headlong); The Romans In Britain (Crucible Sheffield); Scapino The Trickster (Purcarete/Chichester); 5/11 (Pimlott/Chichester); Antigone (Cheek by Jowl/Old Vic); Merlin (Library Manchester); Mariana Pineda (The Gate); Peer Gynt (Southwark Playhouse); The Stoning (BAC); The Disputation, High Jumpers, Family and Penthesilea (Hampstead; Schweyk (Copeau Festival, France). • Henry Filloux-Bennett, Is a Digital Take on the Classic Novel by Oscar Wilde
PROGRAMME ... Dorian Gray now Thank you for signing in and being a part of this adaptation of The Picture Of Dorian Gray. As theatres currently remain closed, stories across the world are now being told online. The Barn Theatre streamed their magical production of Peter Pan, as well as murder mystery co-production, What a Carve Up! with Lawrence Batley Theatre and The New Wolsey Theatre. Christmas at Oxford Playhouse brought online productions of Father Christmas and Sammy and the Beanstalk, an urban version of a classic fairytale, for audiences to watch at home. Theatr Clwyd made Christmas happen with the The Panto That Nearly Never Was, which certainly lived up to the title. And now, these five theatres have joined together to co-produce an Oscar Wilde classic in the digital age. For most of 2020, we spent more and more time online. With endless zoom quizes, home school lessons and virtual meetings, online has become the new normal. The Picture of Dorian Gray as reimagined by Henry Filloux-Bennett, is a digital take on the classic novel by Oscar Wilde. Directed by Tamara Harvey, our adaptation has been plunged into the current social media obsessed world we experience today. But is this filtered down version of reality worth the cost? Are we all as perfect as we seem? 91 562 983 WELCOME 1 ... How does The Picture of Dorian Gray differ from your other digital adaptations? This is the fourth digital production I’ve worked on since lockdown began last year, and I think with each production the ambition has grown - certainly following What a Carve Up!, Tamara and I were incredibly keen to make sure that we built on what we’d been able to achieve and push the boundaries of what we could create.

PRESS RELEASE Shakespeare’s Globe announces Summer Season 2020 22 January 2020 Shakespeare’s Globe is delighted to announce the summer season 2020 will include Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet, Much Ado About Nothing, Twelfth Night, Antony & Cleopatra, a two-day event ‘Globe 4 Globe: Shakespeare and Climate Emergency’, a symposium ‘Shakespeare and Race’, a Playing Shakespeare with Deutsche Bank production of Macbeth with 20,000 free tickets to school children, the return of family festival ‘Telling Tales’, and a new dramatisation of Ovid’s Metamorphoses by our resident writers. Michelle Terry, Artistic Director, said: "This summer the Globe Theatre will be fuelled by mythic love and the hope of radical and positive transformation. The preoccupations that consume Shakespeare’s work are not too distant from our own: growing inequality, social injustice, a natural world raging at the irresponsibility of humankind. But through these metaphysical and mythic works of art we are also given the opportunity to imagine an alternative. Under the sun and the moon in the most unique, irreverent and inherently theatrical playhouse in the world, we continue to look to the past to help us better understand the world today and the role we all play in creating its future.” Opening the season on 14 April is Romeo & Juliet, directed by Ola Ince. Alfred Enoch will play Romeo. Best known for playing Wes Gibbins in How To Get Away With Murder (ABC) and Dean Thomas in the Harry Potter film series, Alfred's theatre credits include Tree (Young Vic), RED (West End), King Lear (Manchester Royal Exchange), Coriolanus (Donmar) and Timon of Athens (National Theatre).
