It offers an overview regarding the historical process and changes which occurred in the state and approach of planning, discussing the process responsible for the urbanization through industrialization. It also trying to investigate the period of Industrial liberalization (1990-91) and its effect on the industrial setup in this district. It explores situation regarding the stagnating urban development, industrialization and planning as well as the perspectives regarding the integrated planning approach in a wider national context.     International Journal of Scientific & Engineering Research, Volume 4, Issue 11, November-2013 641 ISSN 2229-5518 VULNERABLE CONDITION OF WOMEN IN SOUTH 24 PARGANAS DISTRICT, WEST BENGAL Supratim Karmakar ABSTRACT: This article provides an overall picture of crimes committed against women in the district of South 24 Parganas, West Bengal. The rate of crime against women is quite startling in South 24 Parganas district in comparison to other districts of West Bengal. The paper intends to reveal the impact of illiteracy, poverty and societal customs upon the increasing rate of crimes against women in this district. By using official crime data, we analyzed general crime trend and characteristics of crimes and also highlighted the crime control practices. The seriousness of crime problems in South 24 Parganas is also examined from a comparative perspective by engaging in a inter district comparison. The findings of the paper indicate that crime against women in South 24 Parganas is present in various forms and the preventive measures of crimes are not satisfactory. KEY WORDS: Post marital violence, Rape, Molestation, Dowry death, Sexual harassment, Domestic violence, Crime control. 1. (Corresponding Author) Email: [email protected] [email protected] Abstract: Urbanization is the process of concentration of people in densely populated settlements where major portion derive their livelihood from other than primary occupation. It indicates the increase of the number of people living in urban areas mainly due to the natural growth, rural to urban migration, reclassification. Urbanization also reflects the level of development of any unit. To formulate the plan and policies of the development and to overcome the urban problems of any area it is necessary to know the nature and level of urbanization of this unit. Present study is concerned with the level of urbanization based on four selected urbanity and socio-economic indicators and consistency measurement in S. 24 Parganas, West Bengal, India. Hence, different statistical, cartographic and GIS methods have been used to fulfil the aim and objectives. This study reveals that the study area is a highly urbanised district both in terms of growth of urban population and urban centres but in sense of share of urban population it stands much bellow the state average. It also reveals that there is huge intra spatial disparity in the level of urbanization and the consistency of the urbanization in the study area.
