Dr Estelle Lazer was the first archaeologist to work at the site associated with Mawson's Australian Antarctic Expedition at Cape Denison on the Antarctic mainland. She has travelled to Antarctica seven times, including four summers camping and working on the ice at Cape Denison. She also spent a summer working on sealing sites at Heard Island in the Sub-Antarctic.

With an international reputation for her many years of work on Pompeii. Estelle has also worked on archaeological sites in the Middle East, , , the UK, Antarctica and Australia.

Estelle is an Honorary Research Associate at the . Her work on the human victims from Pompeii has been published, most notably, in an academic volume, Resurrecting Pompeii.

Estelle is currently heading a project to examine the casts of the Pompeian victims for the first time, using digital X-ray and CT scanning Enquiries technology. MACQ 01 HOTEL Luxurious accommodation overlooking Hobart’s historic harbour and nestled in the waterfront district and a short stroll to some of the city’s best restaurants and the markets at Salamanca. MAWSONS HUT REPLICA MUSEUM Standing on the waterfront just 200 meters from where Mawson’s expedition departed in 1911 is Mawson’s Hut Replica Museum. The replica hut is exact - every saw and cut mirrors the original historic buildings on Cape Denison that were used between 1911 -1914. The huts are regarded as the birthplace of Australia’s Antarctic heritage and remain in place today.

PORT ARTHUR Travel to the Tasman Peninsula and visit UNESCO World Heritage-listed Port Arthur, a ‘panopticon’ style convict prison from 1833 until 1853. The site is remarkably well preserved and the beauty of its setting belies the tragic events that took place there. Thursday 25 February Antarctic History We begin today with a talk in the hotel before making our way to Mawson’s Hut Replica Museum, situated on the Hobart waterfront, just 200 meters from where Mawson’s expedition departed in 1911. Friday 26 February Port Arthur & Richmond This morning we travel to the Tasman Peninsula, about two hours south east of Hobart. We spend much of the day at Port Arthur, a World Heritage site that functioned as a ‘panopticon’ style convict prison from 1833 until 1853. It is a remarkably well- preserved site, and the beauty of the setting belies the tragic events that took place there. Our visit includes a guided walking tour of the site and museum, and a cruise on the harbour. There is time after lunch to explore some of the 30 buildings, ruins and restored homes set on the 40 hectares of landscaped grounds. On our way back to Hobart, we stop at the historic town of Richmond, where we visit Australia’s oldest bridge. Evening at leisure. Overnight Hobart. (B)

Saturday 27 February Hadley’s Orient This morning there is some free time to visit Hobart’s Salamanca Markets, Tasmania’s most visited tourist attraction offering produce from local growers, gift ideas and artisanal goods. This afternoon we enjoy a traditional afternoon tea at one of Hobart’s Historic Hotels, Hadley’s Orient. After a talk in the hotel in the evening is at leisure. This morning we make our way to Bruny Island by ferry with its spectacular coastlines, geological wonders, lagoons, and abundant flora and fauna. We taste our way across the Island by coach, visiting some of our renowned artisan producers on a gourmet wilderness adventure: award winning cheeses, premium wines and beer, freshly shucked oysters, handmade fudge, local honey and a delicious lunch at Pennicott's beachside restaurant with sweeping views of Adventure Bay. All the while we are surrounded by the spectacular scenery and cultural heritage of Bruny Island, such as local aboriginal artefacts including the first floating Tasmanian aboriginal canoe since European settlement and the tall tales of the Adventure Bay explorers. Monday 1 March Royal Botanical Gardens & Mona This morning we travel to the summit Mt Wellington for its breathtaking views of the city at the foothills below, we then visit the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens where we visit the world’s only Sub-Antarctic Plant House, displaying a selection of the flora of the Sub-Antarctic region with a special collection of the plants of Macquarie Island. We visit Government House, the home of the Governor of Tasmania. * This afternoon we travel up the Derwent to visit Mona, David Walsh’s idiosyncratic museum, which has quickly gained international recognition for its approach to the display of art. Take the time to explore the galleries, some of which are cut deep into the rock. This evening we enjoy a farewell dinner.
