I first went to that area in 1967 on a trip around the world and have continued to revisit since then. Some of the photos in this calendar (Vietnam and Laos) were the result of a recent trip in September 2017. We chose for the intro photo, the opening to the main section of the Buddha Park in Laos. Wat Rong Khun is a unique structure that stands out through the white color and the use of pieces of glass in the plaster, sparkling in the sun. Whereas the murals of many old temples depict scenes from Buddhist stories, the walls of The White Temple contain colorful scenes that depict modern representations of good and evil. Contemporary figures like Batman, Spiderman, Elvis, villains and superheroes from movies, comics, and even spaceships adorn the walls. I took an early morning taxi so that I could arrive at the temple before the crowds. Note the stillness of the pond in front of the temple that creates a reflection of the foreground. Also in the pond in the lower right of the picture are three koi fish- no photoshop here, they are the real deal! TBK CPA. The event takes place near Lake Motosu which can be seen in the photo with Mt. Fuji in the background. The flowers bloom from mid-April though the month of May. Considering the unpredictable Spring weather, I felt very fortunate to have great visibility of Mt. Fuji on the day of my visit. Note that between the lake and Mt. Fuji in the center of the picture, there are remnants of cherry blossom trees. During this event, the “Mt. Fuji Delicious Food Festival” is also held at this site, which features local cuisines and sweets along with street performers. As it happened I was there during “Golden Week” (end of April into early May) when large numbers of locals are visiting these sites. Because of this, it took an entire day to travel the short distance from my hotel in Tokyo to the festival and back. TBK CPA. Its out of the way location meant a long train ride and a taxi cab ride with our guide to the site. Since the Japanese guide that I had previously used was not available, I tried “Guides by Locals” which had been recommended by several sources. I must admit based on my experience, I would also recommend them. The pagoda of Seigantoji serves as a perfect foreground and focal point for this photo. TBK CPA. The small village temple Wat Rong Khun on the outskirts of Chiang Rai in northern Thailand is a modern artistic experiment created, at least partly, to attract both international and national tourists. As such, it is very successful – hundreds of tourists come to the temple on a daily basis. Yet, although it is a Buddhist temple, and as such one might expect the tourist to adopt a reverential gaze when visiting it, this essay shows how the tourist’s experience is disconnected from the spiritual and becomes superficial. This disconnect is due in no small part to the highly decorated surfaces of the temple, which are overwhelming, plastic and undeniably strange for a Buddhist temple. The temple is not only highly decorated, but also regulated and restrictive. All visitors are monitored and surveilled to make sure they approach the space and the different buildings as they should, and therefore experience them as intended for maximum visual impact.

Disembodied heads dangling from trees and ghoulish hands reaching from the pits of hell, make the visitors wonder in astonishment what kind of message the artist is trying to get across. About 15 minutes south of the city of Chiang Rai is one of the most famous temples in Thailand. Wat Rong Khun, known by Westerners as the 'White Temple' is a combination of classic and contemporary art design. This visually conspicuous religious style makes it one of Thailand´s most unusual, man-made attractions interesting enough even for tourists who have no interest in Buddhist temples. Ajarn Chalermchai Khositpipat, the internationally acclaimed Thai artist and creator of the temple was born in 1951 in Chiang Rai province. Started as an act of faith, Chalermchai has invested his own money to create the temple and to make it one of the world´s greatest works of art. Work on Wat Rong Khun was started in 1997 on an area of 3 Rai (0.48 hectars) with an preliminary capital of 18 million Thai Baht (approx. 587,300 USD, or 443,000 Euro). Additional land was bought through donations of wealthy contributors and by now the area comprises 10 Rai of land (1.6 hectars).

As a traditional Buddhist country, Thailand always has been a place where visual representation in temples (wats) – was dominated by the old stories of Theravada Buddhism. The subject of my study is Wat Rong Khun, The White Temple, currently under construction in Chiang Rai in Northern Thailand. The Artist Ajahn Kositpipat Chalermchai transforms universal themes and visual quotes into a vibrant modern vision. He has made a breakthrough in the visual representa- tion of Buddhist teachings, easily understood by ordinary worshippers (biblia pauperum). Wat Rong Khun apart from being the artist’s manifestation of faith and the artistic peak of his career is also a normal buddhist temple in terms of functionality. The main buildings, meditation centre, accommodation for the monks and teaching areas are all planned to be exactly the same as in any other wat (Buddhist residential temple), and the construction is scheduled to be completed by 2070. The breakthrough is the iconography of the paintings and sculptural representations that fill the spaces of the interior (frescoes) and exterior of the temple grounds.     Travel in Chiang Rai Tourism Chiang Rai is rich in tourism resources in terms of natural attractions and antiquities, evidence of its past civilization. It is also home to various hill tribes who follow fascinating ways of life. Chiang Rai is also a tourism gateway into Myanmar and Laos. Attractions Doi Tung (ดอยตุง) A revered mountain which includes the Doi Tung Palace and the Mae Fa Luang Flower Garden. The Wat Phra That Doi Tung Holy Relic, an old religious site on top of the mountain, is about 2,000 meters above sea level Wat Rong Khun (วัดรองขุน): Wat Rong Khun is also known as the White Temple. Whereas most temples visited by tourists have a history going back many centuries, this magnificent place of worship was built only recently. It is the realization of a dream for Thailands noted artist, Mr Chalermchai Kositpipat, who designed and is supervising the construction of this beautiful white temple and its many statues of figures based on religious beliefs. The construction started in 1998 and is expected to be completed in 2008. In addition, there is a gallery nearby exhibiting his paintings. To get there from the city of Chiang Rai, drive north along Asia Highway. Golden Triangle (สามเหลี่ยมทองคํา): A trip to Chiang Rai province would not be complete without seeing the notorious Golden Triangle first hand! This famed border location where Thailand, Laos and Myanmar meet on the Mekong River was once supposed to be the center of all the poppy cultivation in Thailand. Travel approximately 9 kilometers north of old town Chiang Saen, along the road parallel to the Mekong River to the area where the borders of Thailand, Myammar and Laos converge.
