THE Barbados Labour Party held a Mass Canvass yesterday in support of its candidate Senator Toni Moore, for the upcoming by-election in St. George North. Gline Clarke, who served that constituency for 26 years as a Member of Parliament, but who recently resigned and is scheduled to take up a new post as Barbados’ High Commissioner to Canada, was on hand to assist, as was Campaign Co-ordinator Pat Parris, Campaign Manager Dwight Sutherland, other MPs and supporters. The Mass Canvass took off from the St. George North Constituency Office and moved into surrounding areas. Before leaving the Constituency Office, Senator Toni Moore spoke about her strategy for the upcoming by-election in St. George North, as well as the issues identified by constituents to date, which need to be addressed. Expressing confidence that she will emerge victorious over the other candidates also vying for the position, Senator Moore said she was looking forward to working with residents Senator Toni Moore, second from left, Barbados Labour Party candidate for the upcoming by-election in St. George North, in that constituency, to iron out their with, from left, Campaign Manager Dwight Sutherland, former Member of Parliament for St. George North, Gline Clarke and concerns. Democratic Labour Party (DLP) candidate for St. George North, Floyd Reifer pointed out the above yesterday, when asked about the Tour. He noted that he was able to hit the ground running and was able to listen to many of the concerns expressed, especially from young people, who essentially are calling for more opportunities to be provided for them so they can have a better standard of living, especially now, given the present COVID-19 pandemic. “We had a very good reception from the constituents. What we did, we wanted to listen to the issues that the people are having. So we talked to them, we listened to them and we just reassured them that we are here for them and I thought that today was very good. The reaction was Democratic Labour Party candidate for St. George North, Floyd Reifer, front, with Patrick Todd, left, who served in the brilliant” Reifer told The Barbados former DLP administration and other DLP supporters, on location in Lower Estate Tenantry in St. George, during the Advocate. ‘Batting with Reifer’ Constituency Tour. France’s Macron vows to fight ‘Islamist separatism’ FRENCH President Emmanuel Macron has announced plans for tougher laws to tackle what he called “Islamist separatism” and defend secular values. In a keenly awaited speech, Macron said a minority of France’s estimated six million Muslims were in danger of forming a “counter-society”. His proposals include stricter oversight of schooling and control over foreign funding of mosques. However, some accused Macron of trying to repress Islam in France. Under France’s strict principles of secularism, or laïcité, the government is separated by law from religious institutions. The idea is that people of different religions and beliefs are equal before the law. Macron’s plans include closer scrutiny of Muslim private schools The country also has the largest population of Muslims in Western Europe. Many complain the authorities use secularism to specifically target them, for instance in banning the hijab. Speaking outside Paris on Friday, Macron said “Islamist separatism” was a danger to France because it held its own laws above all others and “often results in the creation of a counter-society”. He said this form of sectarianism often translated into children being kept out of France has the largest population of Muslims in Western Europe. school, and the use of sporting, cultural and other community activities as a Macron also said France must do more wants to talk openly and without threat, now it is a promise,” tweeted “pretext to teach principles that do not to offer economic and social mobility to embarrassment about these issues.
