    MEDIA RELEASE 3 April 2019 Commercial digital radio services launch in Hobart Commercial radio is now broadcasting on DAB+ digital radio in Hobart, offering listeners better sound quality and more choice, with three new DAB+ commercial stations now on air – KIX Country, Easy Hits and Triple M Classic Rock. Joan Warner, chief executive officer of industry body Commercial Radio Australia, said: “We’re pleased listeners in Hobart now have the option to listen on AM, FM and DAB+. They can enjoy the benefits of digital radio, including better sound quality and more station choice, listen to their favourite station and try some of the new stations on offer.” Consumers will need a DAB+ radio to receive the new services, but listeners who have purchased a new car recently may already have one as 65% of all new cars sold in Australia are now factory fitted with a DAB+ radio. Listeners simply need to press scan or autotune on the radio to see the new stations appear in the station list. Digital radio was introduced in the five major capital cities in 2009. More than 4.21 million people, or 30% of the population aged 10 and over, listened to DAB+ digital radio each week in the five metro capital cities in 2018. The total number of DAB+ radios in Australia, including those in cars, rose to 4.73 million at the end of 2018. Alison Cameron, chief executive officer of Grant Broadcasters said: “We’re pleased our Hobart listeners have permanent DAB+ broadcasts and we hope they will enjoy our new DAB+ station KIX Country.” Southern Cross Austereo chief executive officer, Grant Blackley said: “DAB+ digital radio continues to grow and we’re excited to introduce SCA’s DAB+ stations to Hobart listeners.” DAB+ radios feature small screens with text information such as program information, the name of the song currently playing, and news and weather updates.

In front of more than 1000 industry peers, Ray Hadley and Amanda Keller were recognised for their outstanding lifetime achievement and contribution to the radio broadcasting industry by being inducted into the Hall of Fame. Comedian, television producer and Amanda’s long-time friend, Andrew Denton, who recently underwent major heart surgery, made a surprise appearance on the night to present her with the Hall of Fame award. Amanda Keller, co-host of WSFM’s popular breakfast show, Jonesy and Amanda, is the first female on-air presenter to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. Her radio career began in 1995 with the successful five-year breakfast show on Triple M with Andrew Denton and last year she was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for her three-decade career in the entertainment industry.

    Next steps for paid parental leave in Australia Project funding: The Australian Government Paid Parental Scheme was announced in 2009 to increase mother’s employment while supporting maternal and child health and gender equality. Ten years since this historic decision, on 22 August the Australian National University, in collaboration with Families Australia and the Work and Family roundtable, held a public forum and national roundtable to evaluate how far we have come and discuss next steps for advancing paid parental leave policy in Australia. The national roundtable, held at the ANU and cosponsored by the Gender Institute, Families Australia and ANU, comprised a mix of policymakers, academics, trade union and industry affiliated representatives, and advocates from diverse sectors and disciplines with a strong professional interest in paid parental leave. Participants heard from an Icelandic scholar on lessons from Iceland where a relatively modest scheme for dedicated mothers and fathers leave has achieved major gains in gender equity in care and work. Discussions cantered on the benefits of Australia’s scheme so far, lessons from the agenda-setting processes that led to the scheme, and the gaps that remain for parents and families in Australia. The funding from the Gender Institute was crucial for enabling this event and for bringing in key scholars and policymakers from around Australia. The event which has received significant attention from mainstream media, and has catalysed discussions around ways forward for improved public policy in Australia for families. Event details and Impact The impetus for the event was the findings from Professor Lyndall Strazdins (ANU) and Dr Belinda Townsend’s (ANU) study of the agenda-setting processes that shaped Australia’s first PPL scheme.

    NAWLA 2019 Austin, TX 1 FOREWARD Welcome to Austin and the 3rd North American Workshop on Laser Ablation (NAWLA). NAWLA covers the latest progress in laser-based microanalytical instrumentation, methods and applications, and provides opportunities for informal interaction among attendees. NAWLA is run by and for the user community with the mission to facilitate laser ablation knowledge transfer and promote community among laser ablation users. This abstract book constitutes a “snap shot” of laser ablation research in 2019, portraying the diverse research activities of the laser ablation community. A total of 77 abstracts (36 oral, 41 poster) were accepted, which contribute to 12 thematic sessions spread over three days. A noteworthy focus for NAWLA’19 is a special plenary session dedicated to latest advances in laser ablation data processing software. It should not be forgotten that NAWLA is a workshop, and thus endeavors to provide engaging opportunities for peer-to-peer learning. Group learning activities for NAWLA’19 include a day of pre-meeting workshop options, and a special workshop within the scientific program devoted to LA-ICP-MS reference materials. As with past workshops, scientific program sessions conclude each day with refreshments and informal time to visit the poster presentations and vendor exhibits, and talk among attendees. 2019 marks the third time for NAWLA to be held in the Jackson School of Geosciences. The workshop has grown each biennium, beginning with the inaugural 2-day 2015 meeting with 110 participants. At the conclusion of that workshop, attendees were asked en masse if they wanted to do “this” again and the overwhelming answer was “yes!”.
