WMCC has continued to stay focused on its core mission, which is to Advocate for, Connect with, and Educate the Manhattan business com- munity. Th e MCC’s relationships with city, state and federal governments have helped to garner support for Manhattan businesses and to encourage business growth and job creation. With funding from City Council Members Ben Kallos and Dan Garodnick, we developed a 2nd Avenue app to promote businesses in the subway construction zone and also estab- lished Friends of Ruppert Park to revitalize the one acre park on 2nd Ave. @ 90th Street. We also set up the 2nd Ave. Business Alliance as a 501c(6) organization to propel the economic development along 2nd Avenue. Advocacy on behalf of MCC members ranged from the fi ght to win signif- icant regulatory reforms for New York City businesses, to pushing the ad- ministration for commercial rent tax reform. MCC also stood up for small businesses on the legislative front regarding a variety of business bills: transit benefi ts, “ban the box,” caregiver status, etc. Th e MCC also contin- ued its engagement and leadership role with the 5 Boro Chamber Alliance in working together to strengthen the voice of New York City small busi- nesses, and expanding our Coalition to include 40 industry organizations representing small businesses. -

Her father's position as a civilian supply officer with the army took the family to Key West, FL and San Juan, Puerto Rico, but the majority of Swanson's childhood was spent in Chicago. It was in Chicago at Essanay Studios in 1914 that she began her lifelong association with the motion picture industry. When did the rascals of “The Front Page” turn into the scoundrels of “Absence of Malice”? Why did reporters stop being heroes played by Clark Gable, Bette Davis and Cary Grant and become bit actors playing rogues dogging at the heels of Bruce Willis and Goldie Hawn? It all happened in the dark as people watched movies and sat at home listening to radio and watching television. “The Image of the Journalist in Popular Culture” explores the continuing, evolving relationship between the American people and their media. It investigates the conflicting images of reporters in movies and television and demonstrates, decade by decade, their impact on the American public’s perception of newsgatherers in the 20th century. The class shows how it happened first on the big screen, then on the small screens in homes across the country. The class investigates the image of the cinematic newsgatherer from silent films to the 1990s, from Hildy Johnson of “The Front Page” and Charles Foster Kane of “Citizen Kane” to Jane Craig in “Broadcast News.” The reporter as the perfect movie hero. -

Localism and Independence at Viacom Television Stations Group Stations Executive Summary Viacom Television Stations Group (VTSG) comprises 35 full-service television stations in some 27 markets around the country whose central focus is service to the local community. Sixteen of these stations are affiliated with the CBS Network, 18 with the UPN Network and one is independent. Each station is managed and operated by a local team that is committed to serving its local community by broadcasting programming covering local public affairs, local emergencies, local politics and local civics and culture. In addition, off-air, VTSG stations and their employees are actively involved in community activities and community events by participating in and donating to thousands of community and charitable events. The following nearly 200 pages contain only highlights of the ways in which VTSG stations serve their local communities. For example, with respect to local news, the summary shows that VTSG dedicates hundreds of hours of airtime each week and spends hundreds of millions of dollars providing its viewers with high quality local news, in addition to the hundreds of hours of national CBS News aired each week on VTSG stations affiliated with the CBS Network. Specific examples of local news commitments include: • WCBS-TV (CBS), New York, NY, airs 30.5 hours of local news per week, representing about 19% of its weekly programming schedule. It spends more than $40 million annually producing its local newscasts. • KCBS (CBS) and KCAL (Ind.), Los Angeles, CA, air about 34 hours and 30 hours, respectively, of local news per week, representing on average about 19% of each station’s broadcast week. -

We see the news as an opportunity to be engaged in the world at large. Saturday Night Live’s “Weekend Update” brought a different take on the image of the journalist: one that was a satire on its head, but a criticism of news culture as a whole. This article looks at the first five seasons of Saturday Night Live’s “Weekend Update” and the image of the journalist portrayed by the SNL cast members serving as cast members from 1975 (Chevy Chase) until 1980 (Bill Murray and Jane Curtin). This article will show how the anchors’ style and substance does more than tell jokes about the news. WWOR’S SERVICE TO NEW JERSEY: KEY FACTS FCC PUBLIC FORUM ON LICENSE RENEWAL November 28, 2007, Newark, New Jersey Fox Television Stations, Inc., licensee of television station WWOR-TV, Secaucus, NJ, has paid close attention to community needs and provided exemplary service to the residents of northern New Jersey since it acquired WWOR-TV in 2001. While not exhaustive, this compilation attempts to capture the nature and extent of WWOR-TV's commitment and service to the citizens of New Jersey. LOCAL NEWS EVERYDAY (Tab A-B) 10 PM Nightly News, Seven Days a Week. WWOR-TV's nightly newscast spends a substantial amount of time covering issues of importance to WWOR-TV’s New Jersey viewers, including extensive election coverage. In addition, the station has partnered with a local newspaper, The Record, and Rasmussen, a provider of political data, to enhance its local coverage. The New Jersey Associated Press Broadcasters Association has consistently recognized the quality of WWOR-TV's news coverage. The attached document provides a sampling of stories broadcast during the period from 2001 to the present that are particularly relevant to New Jersey residents (Tab A). A list of awards received by the station is also included (Tab B). News Updates. In addition to scheduled hourly news updates between 4:00 and 7:00 p.m. weeknights, WWOR-TV interrupts regularly-scheduled programming for breaking news reports of great importance to its northern New Jersey viewers. These include, for example, severe weather warnings (e.g., flooding and power outages), Amber Alerts, and live addresses by the Governor of New Jersey. -
