Zintegrowanie myśli twórczej w ramach jednej platformy komunikacyjnej daje szansę wypowiedzi zarówno teoretykom muzyki, jak i przedstawicielom kierunków wykonawczych. Materiały w Musica Intellectualis ukazują się w języku polskim w postaci artykułów, recenzji, sprawozdań i wywiadów, przyporządkowanych do kilku bloków tematycznych: Szkice i refl eksje, Sylwetki, Studia, Sztuka wykonawcza i kształcenie oraz Varia – wydarzenia, płyty, książki. Wszystkie teksty (poza działem Varia) są opatrzone biogramami autorów w języku polskim i angielskim. The all-Górecki program will be performed by internationally acclaimed ensembles, ENSEMBLE SIGNAL, led by Music Director and Conductor BRAD LUBMAN, and the JACK QUARTET. Kleines Requiem für eine Polka (1993) performed by Ensemble Signal, led by Brad Lubman Quasi una Fantasia: String Quartet No. 2, Op. 64 (1990-91) performed by the JACK Quartet Although Górecki was known most especially for his immensely popular Symphony No. 3, “Symphony of Sorrowful Songs”, this concert showcases extraordinary chamber works from his later compositional period. Kleines Requiem offers an enigmatic memorial mass; “polka” can refer to a Polish girl or woman, as well as the Central European dance, and the cryptic Górecki never explicitly stated his intent. -

Pro- gram- me 2 0 -- -- 14 Festival of improvisation COVER I draw on the sound map of the city. Silently, along quiet places. Quickly, over the loud and shrill. I divide sound drawings into those that are intertwined threads and those that are indicated by traces. The threads are not linear; I hear them in roots, rhizomes, urban mycelium. Traces are on every step, they form urban struc- tures; they trace the streets, quarters and housing estates. I hear their calm zones and also the noise barriers. I search for shortcuts from the system, how not to collide with the sound veins of the city, how to penetrate the organic structure. As a walker / urban hunter during the tracking the quietude / an animal, I search for easily overlooked imprints of sounds in the urban noise and the colors of the endangered sound spectrums. ---- Michal Kindernay Michal Kindernay is an intermedia artist working with interactive connections of sound, image, and other inputs, in an environment of (not only) computer applications. His works include video performances, installations, sound and interactive projects often with ecological aspects. He is one of the founders or yo-yo non profit organization, member of Kravin «KRA» collective and Školská 28 gallery in Prague. Thanks to the expertise and dedication of our past and present staff, collaborations with our Polish and American partners and presenters, and the vision and support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Poland, we have been able to bring the very best of Polish art and culture here to the United States. In 2015 the Polish Cultural Institute New York will be celebrating 250 years of public theater in Poland as well as the centennial of Tadeusz Kantor, the visionary theater director and artist. But we start the year with great expectations for Paweł Pawlikowski’s internationally-acclaimed film Ida, which is in the running for the Golden Globes and, we hope, for the Oscars. Also in film, we are planning two major retrospectives of renowned Polish directors: Walerian Borowczyk at the Film Society Lincoln Center in the spring and Wojciech Jerzy Has at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in the fall. -

The Warsaw Autumn was one of the most important zones of cross-border cultural contact during the Cold War, for its eclectic programming featured musical works and performers from both the Soviet and American zones of cultural, political, and economic influence. The article demonstrates that the festival enabled multiple connections to form across socialist borders. Some of these were top–down, international contacts among socialist state institutions, which resulted in carefully curated performances of cultural diplomacy that tended to reinforce prevailing notions of East–West opposition. Other connections involved informal, personal ties that facilitated the transnational circulation of musical modernism throughout the socialist bloc. The article proposes that the Warsaw Autumn’s advocacy of modernist music by unofficial Soviet composers exposed and encouraged the development of cultural affinities that challenged the socialist bloc’s presumptive hierarchies while also mitigating the Cold War’s broadly drawn divisions between East and West. The article further suggests that the significance of mobility at the Warsaw Autumn in the 1960s depended on the continued fixity of borders in other areas—between states, the Cold War’s geopolitical regions, and contrasting musical styles. -
