They’re hurting. And in a way, they’re scrambling. Nothing a visit from the reeling Buffalo Sabres can’t fix. Sidney Crosby picked up his 13th goal of the season, Tristan Jarry stopped 26 shots and the Penguins extended Buffalo’s winless streak to 15 games with a 5-2 victory on Wednesday night. Evan Rodrigues, Kris Letang, John Marino and Zach Aston-Reese scored also for the Penguins, who recovered from a sluggish three-game set against New Jersey in which they managed just one victory by pouncing on the undermanned and overmatched Sabres. “We’re a close group, a very resilient group,” Marino said. “We’ve had a lot of come-from-behind wins, a lot of bounce-back wins (like tonight). It says a lot about the guys in the room.” Buffalo goalie Dustin Tokarski, making his first NHL start in more than five years with Carter Hutton out due to a lower-body injury, finished with 37 saves and kept the Sabres in it until late in the second period, when Marino and Aston-Reese scored just over 2 minutes apart to give the Penguins all the cushion required. Rasmus Dahlin scored his second goal of the season and Victor Olofsson beat Jarry on a penalty shot in the third period, but the NHL’s worst team remained in a tailspin.

(AP) — The Buffalo Sabres have called up top defensive prospect Brendan Guhle and goalie Linus Ullmark from their American Hockey League affiliate. The call-ups were made Monday, a day after Buffalo closed out seven straight games on the road with a 4-1 loss at Philadelphia. The Sabres host Winnipeg on Tuesday. Guhle has seven goals and 13 assists for 20 points in 35 games in his first season with Rochester. He was Buffalo’s second- round pick in the 2015 draft and played three games with the Sabres during the 2016 season on an emergency call-up basis. Ullmark is tied for the AHL lead with 17 wins and ranks fourth with a .928 save percentage this season. He is 8-11-2 in 21 NHL career games. Sabres reward Guhle as defense prospect continues his growth The Buffalo News By John Vogl January 8, 2018 Brendan Guhle is putting his faith in the Buffalo Sabres' development plan. If they feel the defenseman should be in Rochester, that's fine by him. If they want to give him a chance in Buffalo, that's obviously a nice bonus. It's time to cash in that bonus. The Sabres have recalled their top defense prospect, and he's expected to be in the lineup Tuesday when Winnipeg visits KeyBank Center. "They said I earned the recall, and I'll just play my best," said Guhle, who joined the Sabres for Monday's practice.

Coming back from a bye week followed by the All-Star weekend, the Buffalo Sabres forward was ready, ending an 11-game goal drought with the winner Tuesday night. Sheary got an easy tap-in 2:12 into the third period to lift Buffalo over the Columbus Blue Jackets 5-4. Artemi Panarin was roundly booed by his home fans when he was introduced in the starting lineup. This was Columbus’ first game since Panarin’s agent said the star forward would not discuss a new contract until after the season. Panarin will be an unrestricted free agent. He wasn’t made available for interviews after the game. Sheary and linemate Evan Rodrigues each had a goal and an assist for the Sabres, who had lost four of five before getting the time off. Sheary has struggled all season and hadn’t scored since before Christmas. “Coming off the break, I had fresh legs and was well-rested,” Sheary said. “I have to give credit to my linemates when credit is due. I think our line in general was buzzing all night and we had good chemistry, and I think all that together just added up to a good night.” Carter Hutton had 33 saves to get his first win since Jan. 8. Buffalo had a solid game except for a stretch at the end of the second period when Columbus scored two quick goals to tie it at 4.

But an eye-popping ice time total of 30:42 Tuesday in Denver came with lots extra attached to it. More snarl. More bite. Even after the whistle. He was the top-pair monster that Buffalo Sabres fans need to see every night on defense. "I want to play as many minutes as I can and try to find that 'Beast Mode'," Ristolainen said after practice Thursday in United Center. "That's how you feel when you play a lot and you don't get tired. You just want to run over everyone and make plays." Ristolainen's ice time -- which featured a whopping 11:09 of special teams time -- was the second-highest of his career in regulation. And he set a career-best with a plus-4 rating in the Sabres' 4-2 victory. Coach Phil Housley certainly took note of it, agreeing that it was one of Ristolainen's best games of the season and hoping he'll see more Friday night when the Sabres play the Chicago Blackhawks. "He had an edge to his game and he does that quite often," Housley said. "He's a true competitor but it was an extra attitude in his game and it's great to see. We're at a point where we've got to scrape for everything right now and that's the attitude we have to go into games with." "That's the way he has to play," said defense partner Marco Scandella.

    Buffalo Sabres Daily Press Clips September 17, 2019 Dylan Cozens gets his welcome to the NHL, Sabres win in Ralph Krueger's debut By Lance Lysowski The Buffalo News September 16, 2019 UNIVERSITY PARK, PA. — When the emotional rollercoaster finally ended Monday night, Ralph Krueger stood in front of his players inside the Buffalo Sabres' dressing room and expressed a blend of excitement and relief. "Said to the guys after the game, ‘It was good to get that one down,'" Krueger told reporters, his voice hoarse following his first game as an NHL coach since April 27, 2013. Krueger's return did not go exactly as planned. Despite having only three days to prepare, the Sabres made Krueger's vision a reality by using a fast-and-furious style of play to build a three-goal lead through two periods. However, the Sabres relinquished the lead and needed Jack Eichel's overtime goal with eight seconds remaining to win Krueger's debut, 5-4, against the Pittsburgh Penguins at Penn State's Pegula Ice Arena. The game provided some semblance of how Krueger wants the Sabres to play in 2019-20 and will give his coaching staff some lessons to teach to players. Krueger wasn't the only person in the Sabres' dressing room getting acclimated, either. Dylan Cozens, the 18- year-old center drafted seventh overall in June, made his exhibition debut against NHL competition. Though Cozens did not record a point, he also expressed confidence in his ability to learn from his introduction. “Obviously it’s very fast and guys are so strong and just getting used to the quickness of it," he said afterward.

"I was upset," the 18-year-old rookie defenseman recalled. "I didn't play well and wanted to make the team. They said, 'Hey, you can't do this after every game.' " Not a practice or game has passed without a teachable moment for Dahlin, the NHL's top overall draft pick last June. During Thursday's practice in Harborcenter, both Jack Eichel and coach Phil Housley pulled him aside to offer advice. Dahlin's first season has taught him the value of a short memory, the importance of taking care of his body to withstand the grueling North American game and how to balance his fierce competitiveness with the need to make a simple play. There is still much for him to learn. That fact is powerfully illustrated even on the nights when his transcendent talent tantalizes and awes. Yet, through all the Sabres' struggles — they could be nine points back of the second wild-card when they host Pittsburgh Friday night — Dahlin's progress has not stalled. "I’m so happy," he beamed following practice Thursday. "I wouldn’t have expected this kind of season. So far it’s good, but we have to get some wins back and get back on track.

Introduction Pace of play is an important characteristic in ice hockey as well as other team-invasion sports. While in basketball pace has traditionally been defined as the number of possessions per 48 minutes, here we focus on pace and movement within a possession, leveraging the tremendous advancements in the capture of spatio-temporal data in team sports in recent years [1]. While much attention has been focused on speed and distance covered at the player level, spatio-temporal datasets also allow for more granular definitions of team-level pace of play such as measures of the speed between successive events or the speed of a possession as a whole. While ice hockey has always been one of the fastest-moving sports, rule and tactical changes in the past 15 years, such as the removal of the rule limiting 2-line passes and the stricter enforcement of obstruction/holding infractions, have placed further emphasis on pace. At the start of the 2016-17 NHL season, Paul Maurice, head coach of the Winnipeg Jets said: "This game is just so fast now... I've seen fast players and I've seen fast teams, it's the first time I thought we had a fast league. The speed, to me, is the one thing that’s changed more than anything. Our team, and the league as well, is as fast as I’ve ever seen it.” [2] Given the emphasis on pace in hockey in recent years, it is surprising that a recent study found a slight negative correlation between various metrics of forward attacking pace and offensive output such as shots and goals [3].

The two teams will face off on Tuesday in Buffalo. After a strong start through the first three weeks of February, the Sabres came out of their bye with a disastrous set of back-to-back games over the weekend that may have permanently derailed any hopes of a late playoff push. On Saturday, the Sabres (26-26-10) sustained a 5-3 defeat to the worst team in the league, the Colorado Avalanche. One day later, they fell to the Arizona Coyotes -- the second-worst team in the NHL in points -- after surrendering the winning goal with 18.9 seconds remaining. The losses put Buffalo seven points behind the final wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference. The Sabres were especially frustrated after the loss to Arizona. "We just didn't do enough to win the game," Sabres center Jack Eichel said, according to the team's website. "It's frustrating. These are the ones that we need to have and we're just slowly (taking) our chances away. It's frustrating for all of us. I don't know what it is, but we sit back, let them take the puck to us. We don't push for that next one. We're not forcing turnovers. We're not getting in a forecheck.
