ThiS year's championship has again been a major success with large crowds in attendance al all games. I thank the clubs and particularly the players for their effort and dedication throughout the year and for prOVldmg us with such excellent entertainment. Thanks also to our patrons who have again turned out In large numbers in 1991. The keen rivalry between Cappawhite and Cashel in the last decade should make loday's renewal of the pairing a fascinating contest. These two teams have dominated West Tipperary's Hurling Championship honours In recent years and have represented the Division with distinction in the County series. We wish them well in 1991 The Minor game sees Cashel and Kickhams, last year's finalists, again renew rivalry and what a match IS in store here. The curtain-raiser between the footballers of Arravale Rovers and Aherlow should also be an intriguing match. Finally, I thank all who have contributed to make this final day a great occasion. Our divisional decider is always special, and this year it's extra special because it's the first of our New Millennium and it brings together two teams that have made such a huge contribution to the success of our games in this division and outside in both hurling and football. Knockavilla Kickhams, a club that achieved so ""'.L--' much in the old millennium with 16 senior hurling titles and two in the last three years, are a very experienced learn and with many players of inter-county experience are a formidable side.

  • Tipperary News Part 6
Clonmel Advertiser. 20-4-1822 We regret having to mention a cruel and barbarous murder, attended with circumstances of great audacity, that has taken place on the borders of Tipperary and Kilkenny. A farmer of the name of Morris, at Killemry, near Nine-Mile-House, having become obnoxious to the public disturbers, received a threatening notice some short time back, he having lately come to reside there. On Wednesday night last a cow of his was driven into the bog, where she perished; on Thursday morning he sent two servants, a male and female, to the bog, the male servant to skin the cow and the female to assist him; but while the woman went for a pail of water, three ruffians came, and each of them discharged their arms at him, and lodged several balls and slugs in his body, and then went off. This occurred about midday. No one dared to interfere, either for the prevention of this crime, or to follow in pursuit of the murderers. The sufferer was quite a youth, and had committed no offence, even against the banditti, but that of doing his master’s business. Clonmel Advertiser 24-8-1835 Last Saturday, being the fair day at Carrick-on-Suir, and also a holiday in the Roman Catholic Church, an immense assemblage of the peasantry poured into the town at an early hour from all directions of the surrounding country. The show of cattle was was by no means inferior-but the only disposable commodity , for which a brisk demand appeared evidently conspicuous, was for Feehans brown stout.

ROINN COSANTA. BUREAU OF MILITARY HISTORY, 1913-21. STATEMENT BY WITNESS. NO. 1647. DOCUMENT W.S. Witness John J. O'Brien, 29, Emmet Road, Inchicore, Dublin. Identity. Member of "Knocklong Rescue" Party. Vice Comdt., 6th Battn., East Limerick Bde. Subject. Irish Co. Galbally Coy., Volunteers, Limerick, and No. 3 Flying Tipperary Brigade, Column, 1913-21. Conditions, if any, Stipulated by Witness. Nil. File No S.2970. Form B.S.M.2 STATEMENT OF MR. JOHN J. O'BRIEN, 29 Emmet Road, Inchicore, Dublin. I was born at Mitchelstown, Co. Cork, in the year 1897, being the youngest of three brothers in our family. In the same year, my father, William O'Brien, who had a drapery premises in Mitchelstown, transferred his business to Galbally Co. Limerick, where the family went to reside. I was educated in Galbally and, at the end of 1912, I went back to Mitchelstown as an apprentice to the drapery business in the firm of Denis Forrest, Lower Cork St., and, later, as an assistant in O'Keeffe Brothers. When an Irish Volunteer Company was formed in Mitchelstown, early in December 1913, I immediately joined. I think the first company captain was James O'Neill of Mitchelstown. We did a lot of training which included route marches on which we were generally accompanied by two bands a pipe and a brass. Shortly after the Great war started in l914, some of the company officers including, I think, James O'Neill, went to Birmingham, England, and there purchased about 40 Lee Enfield rifles and 100 rounds of ammunition per rifle for the company, They got the rifles and ammunition safely to Mitchelstown.

  • The Mcgraths of Turraheen by Michael F
The McGraths of Turraheen by Michael F. McGraw, Ph.D. [email protected] November 21, 2018 Introduction The McGrath families described in this paper were initially identified by linking information found in the Griffith’s Valuation, for the civil parish of Clogher, with the church records in the Parish Registers. Later, this family information was supplemented with civil birth, marriage and death records and the 1901 and 1911 census records. Bordering Moyaliff parish on the south is the civil parish of Clogher. The border between these two parishes is also the boundary between the North and South Ridings of Co. Tipperary. It is also the boundary between the Upperchurch-Drombane RC parish and the Clonoulty RC parish. In addition it is also the boundary between the Thurles and Cashel Poor Law Unions (PLU) which later became the Superintendents’ Registrars Districts of the same names. The proximity of several significant boundaries near the residences of ones ancestors automatically doubles the number of records that need to be searched. The Griffith’s Valuation for the parish of Clogher shows eleven (11) unique individuals named McGrath, in the townland of Turraheen Lower. This particular townland is just across the Turraheen River from the townland of Drumdiha, in the civil parish of Moyaliff. Drumdiha is the townland where Edmond and Mary McGrath (my gg-grandparents) were living when their first two children were baptized at Upperchurch (1842-43). A summarized listing of persons of the surname McGrath in the Turraheen Lower townland in the Griffith’s Valuation is shown below: Lot No. Occupier Name Acres 3A & 3B Mary McGrath 18 6 Thomas McGrath 23 8 Philip McGrath 28 9A & 9B Patrick McGrath (Jas.) 12 10 James McGrath, Sr.

The teams taking part - Holycross and Loughmore - have reached this stage on merit and are very worthy contestants for highest honours in the Division. We look forward to those very keen rivals to provide a game in the best traditions of both clubs, a game to bring back memories of many epic finals in Mid Tipperary in former years, a sporting and manly game that will embrace all that is good in the game of hurling.
