King’s Somborne remembers During June the King’s Somborne War Memorial was cleaned and the inscriptions repainted by Jack Cullen and his grandson in good time for the commemoration on 1st July of the 100th anniversary of the start of the tragic Battle of the Somme. The length of the Battle is generally defined as from 1st July to 18th November 1916 and the total number of casualties and losses from all armies as about 1.3million. Although there were a number of acts of commemoration, the largest was that held at the Lutyens designed Memorial at Thiepval in France. This memorial displays the names of the Allied servicemen known to have been killed but whose remains were unidentifiable as a result of the horrific carnage of the Battle.

The Somborne Society book “Somborne Remembers” identified Francis Rhodes and Joseph William Thomas Woodruff, whose names appear on the Village Memorial as well as Alfred James Maloney, Albert (Dennis) Swayne and WCF Vaudrey-Barker-Mill as being killed as a result of the Battle of the Somme. An RBL wreath was placed on our War Memorial early on the morning of 1st July…….We will remember them.

Do you value The Gauntlet? If you do and you want it to continue we could do with some help- 1. To print the magazine pages on our digital copier in the Parish Room, Romsey Road. This would not be more than three times a year but does take between two and four hours. 2. To help put the magazine together in the Epworth Hall. Again, normally this would not be more than three times a year, starting at 1.30 pm and taking no more than three hours. 3. To collect a few bags of magazines from the Epworth Hall on collating day each month (11 times a year) and deliver them to a number of the magazine distributors. At most this should not take more than an hour, but would need the use of a car. The Gauntlet is printed and published towards the end of each month on days agreed at the start of the year. If you would like to know more, please contact:- Lin Curtis (389373), Linda Aucock (388542), or Norman Denison (388889).

Meeting the Vicar As many will know, when families get in contact to arrange a baptism, wedding or funeral, I usually meet with them either in their homes or at The Rectory in Stockbridge. It might be that from time to time some would like to take the opportunity to see me for other reasons, such as for a brief chat, to check something out or if they need some help. With this in mind, I am planning to be in the ‘Parish Room’ (entrance through the brown left side gate of the ‘New Vicarage’, Romsey Road) on a number occasions in the next few months. For those unfamiliar with the ‘New Vicarage’, it is next to Froghole, Please go around the side of the house and do not ring the bell on the front door as the Vicarage, at present, has tenants. Dates when I will be visiting are: August Tuesday 30th, 2.00—4.00pm. September Tuesday 27th, 2.00—4.00pm I look forward to meeting anyone who calls in.

The Vicar has the last word

St Swithun is celebrated on the day I am writing “Last Word” for August. Swithun was a Bishop of Winchester in the 9th century and Winchester Cathedral is actually known as “The Cathedral Church of the Holy Trinity and of St Peter and St Paul and of St Swithun in Winchester”. Quite a mouthful but it includes the name of our own parish church! By trade Swithun was a builder. His work included the construction of a bridge over the River Itchen at the eastern gate of Winchester providing access to both city and cathedral. Although it is believed that he came from a noble family he was known for his humility. When a new church was built it was his task as Bishop to dedicate it. However far it was from the city he would walk rather than ride and usually at night. This was to avoid attracting attention to himself and to prevent crowds gathering just to see the bishop! In the last few years we have seen an increasing number of professional celebrities. Maybe we could do with a few more people in leadership who are “bridge builders” rather than “publicity seekers”. Perhaps this is something to pray for, especially as we go through a period of many rapid changes in our own nation and around the world. Many of you will know the legend related to St Swithun. His humility was a characteristic that stayed with him until his death. He asked to be buried outside the cathedral where the rain would fall on him and he would be trodden underfoot by any who passed by. The next bishop, Etholwold had much more grand ideas and, after building a new cathedral, insisted that Swithun’s remains be moved inside. Storms followed and continued for forty days. Legend says that if rain falls on Swithun’s day, 15 July, rain will also fall on the forty days that follow. Well it rained this morning but I very much hope that the rest of the summer will not be wet! There are plenty of good things happening around the church and the village in the next few weeks and if you have the opportunity to take some holiday I hope and pray the summer will provide some refreshment and renewal for you.
