A collection of poems with about half of the book taken up with the title poem, an epic ballad set partly in native American territory and partly in . The remainder of the poems are mostly of the Borders and some are in lowland Scots dialect. Bright blue cloth with gold lettering and black decoration; brown endpapers. Rubbed at the spine ends and corners. Some marks on the front board. Excellent internally. Rare.

Foreword by William Buchan. This volume contains 21 short stories written between 1894 and 1899. Ex-library with some stamps and markings on the fly-leaf only. Bright and undamaged otherwise. The unclipped d/w is lightly creased.

7600 John Buchan 1875-1949: A Bibliography by Archibald Hanna £35 First edition. Published by The Shoe String Press, Hamden, Connecticut. 1953. VG. The first attempt at a bibliography of Buchan's works. Less comprehensive than Blanchard's work 30 years later but still a useful guide. In particular Hanna lists editions subsequent to the first editions for works authored or edited by John Buchan. 135pp Textured blue cloth, gold lettering. Apart from a slightly darkened spine with dull lettering this copy is in excellent condition throughout. Rare.

9203 Mr Buchan, Writer by Arthur C Turner £25 Signed first edition. Published by SCM Press, London. 1949. VG in VG- dustwrapper. A brief literary biography of John Buchan which was the first non-family account of his life written after his death. 114 pp Green cloth; black lettering; frontispiece picture. Lightly faded along the top edge and there are some brown spots on the front paste-down & fly-leaf. Very bright inside. The d/w is bright but has some creasing and a couple of neatly repaired closed tears along the lower edge. The fly-leaf carries a presentation inscription from the author.

A biography of Britain's outstanding military leader of and also the driving force behind the British Legion and the Poppy Appeal. 397 pages. Textured maroon cloth with gold lettering; top edge gilt; foreword by John Buchan; frontispiece portrait and 7 other illustrations; 21 line drawn maps and charts in the text; endpaper maps (different front and rear). The spine and the gilt top edge are a little faded. Intermittent light foxing but overall a bright copy.

9194 The Island of Sheep by Cadmus and Harmonia (John & ) £225 First US edition. Published by Houghton Mifflin, Boston. 1920. VG with a facsimile dustwrapper. Blanchard A48 note. Written by John & Susan Buchan this is a political symposium in the guise of a country house novel. The UK edition is virtually unobtainable and the US edition is also scarce. 170pp Light blue paper-covered boards with bright blue lettering and black and yellow silhouette illustration. The spine is a little darkened but otherwise the book is in very good condition. There is an inscription on the fly-leaf and also a small private library label. The book comes with a good quality facsimile dustwrapper.

The author spent over 40 years teaching in Scottish schools and this book relates numerous amusing anecdotes from his working life. 368pp Blue cloth; gold lettering; gold thistle emblem on front; frontispiece portrait of author. Extremities rubbed and the front joint is partially split. However, the binding remains firm. There are a few marks on the boards. Lightly foxed throughout. A collection of a series of lectures delivered in 1921 and 1922 under the auspices of the Vernacular Circle of the Burns Club of London. The lectures are The Present State of the Scottish Tongue (WA Craigie), Some Scottish Characteristics (John Buchan), Dialect in Literature (Peter Giles) and The Delight of the Doric in the Diminutive (JM Bulloch). 151pp Blue cloth; gold lettering on front and spine; gold saltire emblem on front. The spine is slightly faded but otherwise the book is very good throughout. There is a bookplate on the front paste-down.

This volume contains 11 stories, each with an introduction by the editor. But for a very slight bump at the base of the spine the book is as new. The d/w has little creasing around the edges and the spine has faded to a different shade of blue from the front.

VG+ During Buchan's lifetime only one volume of his poetry was published but there were many other poems scattered through his writing and many of his novels contain fragments of poetry. 232 pages Illustrated card covers. Excellent condition throughout but for the residue of a small label on the back cover. Rare.

Published by Jonathan Cape. 1928. 23 short stories (16 English, 7 Irish) published in various magazines during 1927. Writers include HE Bates, , VS Pritchett and Thomas Kelly. The book also includes The Year-Book of the British and Irish Short Story 1927. This lists short stories published during the year with biographical notes of many authors and also lists articles about short stories. 421 pages. Dark blue cloth, silver lettering. Rubbed at the extremities and the spine is darkened. Bright internally but the top half of one leaf in the year-book appears to have been torn out. Scarce.

A fine account of the intrigues and downfall of the Italian dynasty. 347pp Pink cloth, gold lettering. Very bright and clean throughout but for a small black mark on the front adjacent to the spine and a small white mark on the back. There is a crease in the cloth on the front. The price-clipped d/w is a little creased and rubbed along the edges but very bright. 7786 Came a Cavalier by Francis Parkinson Keyes £18 First edition. Published by Eyre & Spottiswoode. 1948. VG in VG- dustwrapper. A romantic novel by this prolific American author. 511pp Green cloth, silver lettering. Very good throughout but for slight rubbing at the ends of the spine and a few brown spots on the endpapers and the edges of the text block. The unclipped d/w is bright but has a little wear at the ends of the spine.

One of Keyes' romantic novels, first published in 1938. 360pp Green cloth, red lettering. Bumped in places along the bottom edge but otherwise very good throughout. The unclipped d/w is a little ragged around the edges.

7885 Homely Scenes from Great Painters by Geoffrey W Turner £50 First edition. Published by Cassell, Petter & Galpin. Undated but probably 1870s/1880s. VG-. 24 paintings of domestic scenes are illustrated by full-page photographs and with 4 to 5 pages of comment to each one. 126pp + 8pp publisher's catalogue. Quarto, approx 11 inches x 8 inches. Bound in pebbled blue cloth with gold lettering and attractive, typically late-Victorian decoration in black, red & gold; bevelled edges to the boards; all edges gilt; frontispiece with tissue guard and 23 other full page illustrations by the Woodbury process; black endpapers. The binding is bright but has some patchy fading and the cloth on the rear board is slightly wrinkled. There is slight wear at the ends of the spine and the corners and the outer edge of the front board has a small abrasion. Internally bright with a firm binding. The majority of the plates are lightly foxed on the reverse. A lovely example of the Victorian bookbinder's art.

7890 The Birds of Berwickshire volume I by George Muirhead £90 First edition. Published by David Douglas, . 1889. VG- volume 1 only of Muirhead's delightful work. Not simply a list of birds but notes about habitat, the areas in which they are seen and poetic and historical comments. In many ways akin to Izaak Walton's writing on fishing. There are numerous line drawings in the text, not of the birds but again of their nests and the countryside. The majority of these are by Mrs Muirhead and John Blair. 334pp + 14pp publisher's catalogue. Blue cloth; gold lettering; dark blue endpapers; fold-out map; numerous illustrations. There is some wear at the ends of the spine and a few scuff marks but internally the book is in excellent condition and the binding is sound.

A book of charming, humorous short stories set in the mythical Scottish village of Pedenknowe. Most had previously appeared in literary magazines. 295 pages. Green cloth; gold lettering; 3 illustrations by the author. Small crease in the spine cloth. There is occasional light foxing but overall the book is in very good order. The illustrated d/w has wear at the extremities and a couple of small pieces missing at the ends of the spine. Rare.

The first part of the autobiography of a churchman who was successively Bishop of Hereford and Bishop of Durham. Internally bright with just some light foxing of the first few leaves. There is a name written on the front paste-down.

9687 Canada – includes message by John Buchan (Lord Tweedsmuir) £25 First edition. Published by , London. 1939. Blanchard C127. The Times of 15 May 1939 was a special Canadian issue published on the date of the arrival of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth in Canada. This book collects those articles and includes a 2-page message from Lord Tweedsmuir entitled “An Unfinished Saga”. This is a copy of the paperback edition bound in cream card with black lettering. The card covers have browned with age but otherwise the book is in good condition. There is a gift inscription on the reverse of the frontispiece map. This is a surprisingly scarce title.

The second Dickson McCunn novel in which we are introduced to Mr Craw the newspaper magnate and the Evallonian delegation. Once again a mixture of high adventure and gentle humour. 320pp Green cloth; gold lettering; gold JB monogram on front. The covers are lightly scuffed and rubbed. Internally the book is very bright. There is an ownership inscription on the front fly-leaf. The book comes with photocopy of a reasonable dustwrapper.

Comments and Characters by John Buchan (edited by W Forbes Gray) Published by Thomas Nelson & Sons. 1940. Blanchard A130. From February 1907 until December 1908 Buchan was the editor of The Scottish Review, a penny weekly published by Nelson. Buchan wrote the editorials and articles for this magazine and this collection of his pieces was put together by his deputy many years later. It demonstrates the breadth of his writing and his ability to write in a considered and thought-provoking way on a wide range of subjects. Biography, history, literature, religion and politics are all dealt with. 422pp Terracotta cloth, gold lettering. The top edge is dark red.

9686 De strijd aan de Somme by John Buchan £25 First edition. Published by Thomas Nelson & Sons. Undated [1916]. Dutch translation of The (Blanchard A40 & A41) published, as with the original, in 2 small volumes. These are bound in pale blue card with black lettering and, strangely, the page size of the second phase is very slightly narrower but taller than the first phase. The first volume is missing the frontispiece, title page and the fold-out map but the text and all other illustrations are complete. The second is entire. Both have stains and marks on the covers but are clean internally. Both have a rubber compliments stamp on the rear cover of the London General News & Book Agency, Rotterdam. A most unusual and interesting edition.

A selection from Buchan s dealing particularly with major events in the Western Front. A detailed account of General Gordon's last stand and the events leading up to it. 169pp + 3pp adverts. Cream cloth; gold lettering on red label; pink top edge; frontispiece and 5 other illustrations; 2 maps. The cream cloth is uniformly browned and is lightly soiled in places. There are some scuff marks on the spine. Internally bright but for some brown spots on the endpapers and a browned half-title.

7599 by John Buchan £27 US first edition. Published by George H Doran, New York. 1916. Blanchard A38 (note). VG-. The second Richard Hannay novel, another exciting adventure in which the action roves across Europe to an exciting climax in the Turkish mountains. 345pp dark red cloth; gold lettering; blind-stamped star and crescent on front. The spine is heavily faded with dull lettering and one corner is bumped but otherwise the binding is in good order. Internally the book is very good with just very slight browning of the page margins. The front hinge is starting to crack.

Huntingtower by John Buchan Published by Hodder & Stoughton. 1922. Blanchard A53. The first Dickson McCunn novel, a blend of high adventure and whimsical humour. A retired grocer's walking tour leads him to unexpected adventures. 318pp Light blue cloth; dark blue lettering; endpaper maps.

John Burnet of Barns by John Buchan Published by John Lane, The Bodley Head, London. 1898. Blanchard A7. Buchan’s second novel set in the late 17th/early 18th centuries. The action roves between Tweeddale, Edinburgh and Holland. 444pp + 12pp publisher's adverts. Green cloth with pale green lettering and decoration. The text bock edges are uncut.

9191 Lake of Gold by John Buchan £30 First Canadian edition. Published by Musson Book Co, . 1941. Identical to the US edition (Blanchard A133). VG- in VG- dustwrapper. A collection of stories, interspersed with poems, told by a native Canadian to a young boy. Published just after his death, Buchan wrote this book with the aim of encouraging Canadian youngsters to learn about their country's past. 190pp Blue-green cloth, blue lettering; blue line drawing on front; numerous illustrations; illustrated endpapers. Very bright internally but the boards are faded around the edges. There is a book-plate on the reverse of the fly-leaf. The pictorial d/w is rubbed at the edges and has a faded spine.

Dr Johnson appears as a significant character in the tale. Published a few days before the UK edition and thus the true first edition. 333pp Light grey cloth; dark green lettering. Lightly soiled. The front hinge is cracked but the binding remains firm. Excellent internally.

Buchan's fine biography of one of Scotland's most charismatic and remarkable military commanders, executed for treason in 1650. 385pp Purple cloth; gold lettering; top edge dark green; outer and lower edges uncut; 2 illustrations; 11 maps. Gilt on spine a little dull and front hinge cracked - the binding remains firm. Otherwise very good and particularly bright internally.

9190 Mountain Meadow by John Buchan £12 US first edition. Published by Houghton Mifflin, Boston. 1941. Blanchard A131. VG- in G+ dustwrapper. Published 3 weeks before the UK edition this is the true first. Buchan’s powerful final novel, published posthumously, tells of the final months of Leithen s life as he searches for a missing financier in the Canadian Arctic. This edition has an interesting, lengthy introduction by Howard Swiggett which is absent from the UK edition. 276 pp Pale green cloth, patterned on front and spine; black lettering; top edge brick red. The spine is slightly darkened. Bright internally with the occasional pencilled note. There is a bookplate on the paste-down. The pictorial d/w is bright but has wear at the ends of the spine with small pieces missing and it is rubbed along the flap hinges.

Extracts from Buchan s 4-volume history of the Great War covering the major naval actions. Published at a time of increasing unease at German naval re-armament. 402pp Green cloth; gold lettering; frontispiece and 10 other plates; 14 maps; top edge dark green. Lightly bumped corners. Faint mark on the front cover. Bright internally. Small bookplate label on the front paste-down.

8988 Nelson’s History of the War by John Buchan £150 First edition. 24 volumes. Published by Thomas Nelson & Sons. 1915-19. Blanchard A28. VG- Buchan’s remarkable account of the First World War with each volume written and published within a short time of the events described, although the time lag increased later in the series as Buchan was taken up with his position as Director of Propaganda. Comprehensive, inevitably biased to a degree towards the allied effort, and complemented by numerous maps and appendices detailing military honours, diplomatic letters etc. As with most sets the individual volumes differ in condition; some have faded spines or patchy fading on the covers, some have rubbed edges and corners, some have occasional foxing and so on. However, overall the set is in good condition and would make an excellent read to take one’s mind off lockdown!

Poems Scots and English by John Buchan First edition published by TC & EC Jack, London. 1917. Blanchard A43. A collection of poems equally split between English and lowland Scots. 106pp Black cloth; gold lettering; outer edge uncut. The book is dedicated to Buchan's younger brother, Alastair, who fell at Arras a few months before publication of the book. Publication was taken over by Nelson’s after the second impression and continued in the same format. In 1936 Nelson published a revised edition in their Uniform series – see Blanchard A44.

The dustwrapper is from a fourth impression copy. It has a sunned spine and has a few chips around the edges. There is light soiling on the rear panel.

7903 £20 VG in G dustwrapper. 4th impression. The book is lovely and bright with just a hint of rubbing at the foot of the spine. The rare d/w has a heavily sunned spine with pieces missing. It has had some neat repairs done. There is also wear at the corners. Unusually the front and rear panels have not faded and retain their original pale blue-green colour.

9175 £50 VG+. 3rd impression – Nelson (undated). This is a copy of the rare large paper limited edition. An outstandingly good copy with just a hint of rubbing along the lower edge.

It was issued in 3 editions simultaneously. Blanchard A107 is the ‘standard’ trade edition. Blanchard A108 is the large paper edition which also contains additional photographs. A note to A108 describes the signed, limited version of this edition which is notable for having been supplied in a custom-made box. In addition, the University of London Press published at the same time a simplified version for schoolchildren. (A109). Vast numbers of this edition were presented to children by their school.

The pictorial d/w is rubbed around the edges and corners. The author's name has partially faded from the spine. As well as some creasing on the rear a large diagonal tear has been repaired externally with adhesive tape.

These for Remembrance: Memoirs of 6 Friends Killed in the Great War by John Buchan First published privately in 1919 in very small numbers. Copies of this are very rare indeed. In 1987 a public edition was published by Buchan & Enright with a lengthy introduction by Peter Vansittart. Bound in maroon cloth with gold lettering. The introduction is not paginated and there then follows 82 pages of the original text and 9 illustrations. In my opinion, this is some of Buchan’s best writing. Poignant but not sentimental, sad but not maudlin. Every Buchan collection should have a copy.

A collection of articles on sport, principally as practised by public school boys of the early 20th century. The sports covered are fishing, big-game hunting, mountaineering, hunting, racing, small boat sailing, boxing, cricket, rugby football and rowing. The spine and its gilt lettering are faded and the boards have patchy fading. Excellent internally. There is a small address label on the front paste-down.

The Nations of Today – General editor John Buchan First (and only) edition of each volume published by Hodder & Stoughton. 1923. Blanchard B8. A series of books (A New History of the World) edited by JB. His “General Introduction” appeared in each volume but the books themselves were written by a range of different writers. 12 volumes were published and each included a note stating “Other Volumes in Preparation” but none of these “other volumes appeared. As well as the binding described in Blanchard there were also copies produced with a binding with some blind-stamped decoration and stating the publisher as The Waverley Book Company. Waverley was a trading name of Hodder & Stoughton and I believe that volume of this nature were purchased through a subscription scheme.

9685 £15 VG. But for a slightly darkened spine this copy is in very good condition throughout. It has the bookplate of Gilbert Rae and an initialled, but not signed, presentation inscription to him. Rae (1875-1955) was a contemporary of JB and well-known to the Buchans. He was the author of over 20 books, most of them about Tweeddale and its surrounding areas. An interesting copy.

7888 John Clay: A Scottish Farmer by his eldest son £50 First edition. Privately published in Chicago. 1906. John Clay was a farmer, businessman and politician who, as well as farming on a large scale in the area around Kelso & Greenlaw in the Borders, drove forward legislation of benefit to the agricultural community. 154 pages. Blue cloth with gold lettering and lining; 6 illustrations and 2 facsimile documents. Gilt top edge. The corners are rubbed and the end of the spine worn. The lower part of the spine and font board are water stained. The binding is shaky and one leaf and one illustration are detached but still present. There is light foxing throughout. Rare.

7886 My Life on the Range by John Clay £90 First edition. Privately published in Chicago. 1924. VG-. Son of a farmer, Clay emigrated to the US in 1874 and became a large-scale cattle rancher and a driving force behind cattlemen’s associations and cattle companies. This volume gathers together a number of essays written over the 10 years prior to publication. 366 pages. Black cloth with gold lettering. Frontispiece and 16 plates. Gilt top edge. The corners are rubbed and one is lightly bumped. There are water stains along the lower edge. Bright internally but one illustration has been torn diagonally – the detached portion is still present. Very rare in the UK.

Lightly faded spine with a small black mark near the head. Further small black mark on the front. Cracked front hinge but the binding remains firm. Very good internally. An attractive copy.

An essential for the serious Buchan collector. 284 pages Bound in green cloth with gold lettering. But for a hint of rubbing at the foot of the spine the book is virtually as new throughout.

7884 The Grey Man by SR Crockett £85 Signed, limited first edition. Published by T Fisher Unwin, London. 1896. VG. SR Crockett was a popular author of the late 19th/early 20th century. This novel, written at the height of his popularity, is a tale of treachery and intrigue set in 17th century Galloway. This copy is a very rare example of the signed, illustrated edition limited to 250 un-numbered copies. 358 pages. Bound in dark blue cloth with gold lettering. The front bears a vignette, in gold on a turquoise background, of two men in a wooded scene. The book is printed on good quality thick paper and there is a frontispiece illustration with a tissue guard and 26 further illustrations by Seymour Lucas. The book is signed by the author on the page after the half-title. The top edge is gilt and the others are uncut. The binding is lovely and bright but has a few light scuff marks. The book is equally bright internally with just light foxing on the endpapers. The illustrations are all present and, like the rest of the book, undamaged.

The author, who was Carrick Pursuivant of Arms, sets out the rules and formalities of the Scottish heraldic system which differs markedly from that of England. There is a 2-page foreword by John Buchan. 186 pp Textured blue cloth; gold lettering; frontispiece illustration with tissue guard; 37 full-page illustrations, many in colour; 91 illustrations in the text; top edge gilt; outer and lower edges uncut. The book is in very good condition throughout. There is an ex-libris bookplate of The Stewart Society on the fly- leaf but no other evidence of library ownership/use. A small address label has been pasted onto this bookplate. The illustrated d/w is not price-clipped. The top of the spine is worn and the white rear panel is soiled. The is a piece about one and a half inches square missing from the top corner of the front panel adjacent to the spine.

Very bright with lightly rubbed corners and a couple of very slight scuff marks on the spine. The first few and last few leaves are lightly foxed but otherwise the book is very bright inside and overall is a very good and attractive copy.

Not to be confused with Sir Walter Scott's steward and amanuensis, this author was a Borders scholar and antiquarian. This book draws together selections of his poetry, firmly rooted in the Borders, and his prose writing which also deals mostly deals with the area around his native Jedburgh. 113 pp + 2 pp reviews. Blue-green cloth; gold lettering; black decorative device on the front; black endpapers; top edge gilt; frontispiece portrait of the author with tissue guard; 19 other illustrations. But for some rubbing at the extremities and 3 faint marks on the front the book is in very good condition. In particular, the gold lettering on the front is very bright. Scarce.
