Mary Jane Croft Muncie, Delaware County February 15, 1916 – August 24, 1999 Mary Jane Croft was an American actress best known for her roles as Betty Ramsey on I Love Lucy, Ms. Daisy Enright on the radio and television versions of Our Miss Brooks, Mary Jane Lewis on The Lucy Show and Here’s Lucy, and Clara Randolph on The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet. Mary Jane started her show business career on the stage with the civic theatre in her hometown of Muncie, Indiana. After briefly acting with the Guild Theatre in Cincinnati, Ohio, she joined the local radio station WLW and embarked on a career as a radio actress. She moved to Los Angeles in 1939 after her marriage to fellow actor, Jack Zoller. During the 1940’s and 1950’s, Mary Jane became one of a company of in- demand voice actresses. Her best-known pre-Lucille role was as Daisy Enright, the nemesis of Our Miss Brooks, which starred Eve Arden and Gale Gordon (both on radio and then on TV). After the death of her first husband, she got married for the second time in 1960, she began using her newly married name for her character on The Lucy Show (1962), which was produced by new husband, Elliott Lewis. By 1965, Mary Jane had replaced Vivian Vance, who retired from the show, as Lucy's neighbor. For most TV audiences, Mary Jane Photo Courtesy: IMDB (the Internet Movie Database) will be fondly remembered as Lucy’s cheerful ally and confidante in their various joint endeavors.

Edit Cast Complete series cast summary: Lucille Ball Lucy Ricardo episodes, Desi Arnaz Ricky Ricardo episodes, Vivian Vance Ethel Mertz episodes, William Frawley Edit Did You Know? Trivia William Frawley , aka "Fred Mertz", had a well known and longtime issue with alcoholism. He was advised in the beginning of the series to stay sober, or be terminated. So, if you look closely, a majority of his scenes display his character having his hands deep in his pockets. This would therefore not show his hands trembling, due to his alcoholic withdrawals. Goofs The Ricardos are said to live in an apartment at East 68th Street, which in real life would be located in the East River. This is not actually a 'goof' because it was done deliberately to avoid legal issues with an actual address. Quotes Lucy Ricardo : How much do you want to bet? Fred Mertz : Ten dollars. Ethel Mertz : Well what's the matter with twenty dollars? Ricky Ricardo : What's the matter with thirty dollars? Lucy Ricardo : What's the matter with fifty dollars? Fred Mertz : What was the matter with ten dollars? Crazy Credits In some of the episodes, the guest-star's name s are voiced over, by conductor, Wilbur Hatch , in the Opening Credits or Closing Credits. Alternate Versions The famous opening credit sequence, where the names appear over a heart, was not a part of the original series run.

RADIO DRAMA: A “VISUAL SOUND” ANALYSIS OF JOHN, GEORGE AND DREW BABY by PASCHA WEAVER B.S. Florida Agricultural And Mechanical University, 1997 A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Fine Arts in the Department of Theatre in the College of Arts and Humanities at the University of Central Florida Orlando, Florida Spring Term 2012 ©2012 Pascha L. Weaver ii ABSTRACT Radio Plays are a form of classic American Theatre that relies on dialogue, music and sound effects to audibly enhance a story with no visual component. While these types of plays are no longer at the forefront of modern day theatrical experience, I believe these popular plays of the mid-20th century are derivative of an oral storytelling tradition and significant to American entertainment culture. This thesis will discuss the aspects of radio plays that viscerally captured audiences. While this concept can be applied to many popular America radio shows of the time, this thesis will focus on one form ; the black radio play or black situation comedy series. I will deconstruct different genres of radio shows and identify the elements of sound effect, imagery and patterns in speech. This thesis will apply these elements to programs about white family life, (Fibber McGee and The Lone Ranger ) as well as family comedies about black cultural life, (Amos n' Andy, The Martin Lone and Beulah Show and Aunt Jemima). In addition, it will also reveal the business of employing white male actors to voice the parts of black characters and the physical mechanics used to create a “black sound”.

LOIS LOTS OF INTERESTING STUFF BY ROBERT D FLACH VOLUME 1 – NUMBER 6 - DECEMBER 2011 FEEL FREE TO PASS ALONG THIS ISSUE OF LOIS TO FRIENDS, FAMILY MEMBERS, CO-WORKERS, WHOMEVER. LOIS IS FREE TO ALL! DID YOU KNOW? When CBS first approached Lucille Ball to do a tv series they did not want it to co-star Desi Arnaz, as Lucy had wanted, because he was a Cuban. The network didn’t think audiences would buy the marriage of an all-American girl and a Latino. Lucy saw the television show as a great opportunity to work with Desi and perhaps save their shaky marriage. To prove the network wrong Lucy and Desi developed a vaudeville act that they took on the road with Desi's orchestra. The act was a hit and convinced CBS executives that a Ball-Arnaz tv pairing would work. Or so I recently learned from AN EVENING WITH LUCILLE BALL: “THANK YOU VERY MUCH” (http://aneveningwithlucilleball.com), which I saw at the Surflight Theatre in Beach Haven on Long Beach Island. The one-woman show, starring Suzanne LaRusch, was written by Ms LaRusch and Lucie Arnaz and directed by Lucie Arnaz. In 1950 CBS had asked Ball to take her successful radio comedy MY FAVORITE HUSBAND to television with co-star Richard Denning. The radio program was written by Bob Caroll Jr and Madeline Pugh, who would go on to write for I LOVE LUCY, and co-starred Bea Benaderet and Gale Gordon as their neighbors. This is the show that eventually became I LOVE LUCY.
