I Attributing an exact date to Watteau's and especially his is very difficult. Often he did not date his paintings and very rarely his drawings. It was his custom to work from early as well as more recent studies when , and repeated features from one painting to another. Consequently attributing dates by way of reference and cross referal is not always possible. For these reasons not all of the following illustrations are accompanied by a date. 2 The Defiladehas been debated by scholarsand its attributionto Watteauis in somedoubt.
