Harry Potter Year 7: the Battle of Hogwarts / April 27-29 2012 Rules and Scenario Harry Potter Year 7: The Battle of Hogwarts / April 27-29 2012 Rules and Scenario Harry Potter Year 7: The Battle of Hogwarts Wrapup Doc Groups Seamus and the Dragons The three band members from the previous game, teaming up to entertain the school and restore the Luck of the Irish by breaking an ancient English curse, with the side effect of giving them boosts for the battle. House Beaverdash The House of engineers, with a variety of creative alpha abilities they could learn for the SIK game. Un- fortunately for them (and everyone else), the creation of their house in the previous game did in fact reach backwards in Hogwarts’s internal sense of time, but did not rewrite history so thoroughly as to change people’s memories or actions... which meant that the school wards expected the fifth house to be part of the defense, but that when Dumbledore last set up the full wards, he didn’t think to include them, causing catastrophic failure on the first day and forcing Beaverdash to fix the problem in a hurry. The retroactive creation of Beaverdash was also the reason that there was an extra Horcrux floating around: Voldemort had gotten a bulk discount on his Horcrux ritual by committing to one-per-house, not realizing that that was actually a variable, not a constant. Continentals Three students working for (or trying to bribe their way into the good graces of) the French government and Beauxbatons, by retrieving artifacts within Hogwarts that had been stolen by the English previously, and anything else they could get their hands on. Succeeded spectacularly. Also helping some Durmstrang students raid the Hogwarts library. Dumbledore’s Army Focused primarily on defending the school by clearing the way for the Order of the Phoenix’s fighters to join them within Hogwarts. Opened the wards to let the Order in; sent Augusta Longbottom medicine to keep her healthy and fighting; recruited Percy Weasley to the Order’s side with photographs. Human Protection League Known to the GMs as Elfwatch. Aiming to perform an old Slytherin ritual to encourage enemies to fight each other (with an optional add-on establishing a third faction that both sides would consider diplomatic and trustworthy) on the house-elves and goblins. Instead, used it to encourage enmity between Death Eaters and trolls, and Lord Nott and a variety of non-humans, while setting up current Hogwarts students and faculty as trusted intermediaries. Full Moon Rising Werewolves and the old Trelawney Fan Club joining forces to take out Fenrir Greyback, reduce the damage (and further wolfings) from his werewolf army, and keep the PC werewolves fighting effectively. Greyback died dramati- cally in a duel with Hannah Abbott, and no (more) PCs were wolfed. Gobstones Club Pranking the school to lighten up the mood, setting up Portable Swamps as part of the defense effort, and breaking into Filch’s office to modify student records. Servants and Friends of Grindelwald Collecting evidence about Voldemort, the Ministry, and other useful topics to send to Grindelwald. Had three thresholds; after the first one, Grindelwald would win his battle at the Ministry rapidly enough to send golem reinforcements if the PCs were losing the SIK game, while the second two allowed Grindelwald to fully conquer England with various amounts of difficulty. Half of the members didn’t actually want the second win condition; they ended up meeting the first. House Gryffindor Blocking entrances to the castle, patrolling the halls, and learning a series of brave house alpha abilities, including berserker and dragon-slaying; had the standard house ward plot. Heroes of Hogwarts Learning a series of heroic alpha abilities, one for each House, to help them in battle; duelling to earn extra alpha. 1 Not Transferable Harry Potter Year 7: The Battle of Hogwarts / April 27-29 2012 Rules and Scenario House Hufflepuff Trying to restore the broken morale of Hufflepuff, and Hogwarts in general. Learning a series of cooperative House alpha abilities; had the standard House ward plot. Immortality Club AKA the Baby Dark Lords. Trying to consume Voldemort’s soul for power and knowledge, since he’d helpfully broken it into bite-sized pieces; competing with each other for the horcruxes and Voldemort himself. Also setting up golem stations for the battle. Laundry Assistants A group of radical Muggle and New Wizard sympathizers, who were helping the Laundry (Magic-aware Muggle blackops) take advantage of pre-battle chaos to break in to Hogwarts and steal teachers for training purposes. Ministry Supporters Performed a ritual for the Ministry of Magic that brought the New Wizards under the Ministry’s control. Also scouting the Hogwarts wards, spying on suspected rebels, and helping Dolores Umbridge. Building the Moon School Restocking and expanding their spaceship for a return voyage to the Moon! Also collecting materials and recruits to help found the Moon School (now officially named Grimaldi). Neutralizers Students with loyalties to people on both sides of the battle, or who hate to see anyone killed, working on battle- usable portkeys and stun weaponry to take opponents out of the battle non-lethally. Unfortunately, the stun weaponry came in with the Laundry, and was thus extremely hard to acquire. Supporters of the New Wizards Sending educational resources from Hogwarts to the many new wizards created by genetic magic last winter. Medical Enthusiasts Spreading healing magic for use in the battle, and removing an ancient Ministry enchantment that prevents unauthorized wizards from performing anything by the most basic (and useless) healing charms. Allies and Friends of the House Elf Revolution Helping the former house elves of Britain free their compatriots in the rest of Europe by sneaking them into Hogwarts and helping with their big ritual. Prom Committee Dedicated to running the best-ever Wizard Prom! House Ravenclaw Recruiting the library monsters to aid in the fight, setting up statue stations around the school, learning intelligent House alpha abilities, and helping Blaise remove Mandy’s curse; had the standard House ward plot. Safekeepers Sending valuable bits of Hogwarts art and history out of the castle to make sure it didn’t get stolen or broken during the battle. (Most of it will be returned postgame. ) House Slytherin Setting up traps around the school to damage enemies, learning clever House alpha abilities, and negotiating with enemies as needed; had the standard House ward plot. S.P.U.T.U.M. Buy off all of the non-human factions, to keep them from joining in a big non-human war against wizardkind. Succeeded with everyone except the centaurs. Former Students of St. Brutus Get their revenge on Dolores Umbridge for the destruction of their previous school, including confronting her with direct evidence of her wrongdoing. (Although confrontation was thwarted by her death, the scandalous details will be published in next week’s Quibbler.) Also find the Giant Slayer and use it to defend Hogwarts. They also had a memory packet for the giant-summoning beacon Umbridge brought to Hogwarts, and which was sent to Beauxbatons. Wandmakers Remove a tracking spell the Death Eaters had placed on Phoebe, discover the magical properties of new Moon materials in wands, teach Astoria the final steps in wandmaking so the knowledge won’t be lost, and make as many wands as possible. 2 Not Transferable Harry Potter Year 7: The Battle of Hogwarts / April 27-29 2012 Rules and Scenario Characters Gryffindor Members - Neville Longbottom, Gryffindor (Daniel Grazian): The flaming-good-guy from the books, coming into his own and learning to lead the DA and the Heroes. Also combat training with Millicent: depending on how her training made him feel, he could travel down the “dark” or “light” paths and learn corresponding abilities. Restored his grandmother to full health by sending her healing potion, but lost his parents to a poisioned Pygmy Puff sent to St. Mungos by Molly, an undercover Death Eater. Earned Gryffindor’s sword with his bravery in combat, and killed Nagini. - Ginny Weasley, Gryffindor (Miriam Gershenson): The spunky heroine from the books, miserable because all her luck had been sent to Harry and co. through Gryffindor’s luck transmitter. Working to help Neville lead the DA, help the new Wizards adjust, and in particular wanted to persuade Percy back to the good guys. Had a bit of a shock when Harry showed up mid-game, and helped him search for the Horcruxes; used the Sword of Gryffindor to fight Nagini and take her down. - Samuel Clarenlocke, Gryffindor (Ben Sena): The “Rule Through Loyalty” baby Dark Lord. The voices in his head were louder than ever, since the Ancient Dark Lord who’s been possessing him feels it’s time to move and seize power. Also a member of Seamus and the Dragons. - Jack Hagerthorpe, Gryffindor (Nathan “Fluffy” Arce): The bastard son of Gilderoy Lockhart who is finally going to get recognition, dammit! Sought fame with the Heroes and the Band, and also wanted to bring that slimy bitch Umbridge to justice with St. Brutus. Probably has an illustrious music career ahead, thanks to the Band completing Luck of the Irish. - Seamus Finnegan, Gryffindor (Gaurav Singh): As much as it bothered him to work with the English Ministry, was trying to keep new wizards from adding their loyalties the (English) wizarding world. Managed to reverse some of Ireland’s recent ills by pulling off the “Luck of the Irish” ritual, despite a missing bandmate. - Colin Creevey, Gryffindor (Edward Yang): The bouncy, irrepressibly and haplessly enthusiastic Gryffindor who wanted to make everyone feel special before the battle by taking an official yearbook photo of everyone at Prom.

  • Wands Or Quills? Lessons in Pedagogy from Harry Potter
Summer/ Fall THE CEA FORUM 2015 Wands or Quills? Lessons in Pedagogy from Harry Potter Melissa C. Johnson Virginia Commonwealth University “The real world, then, becomes somewhat illuminated by these characters who can span both worlds. For example, teachers at Hogwarts can be imaginative and compassionate; they are also flighty, vindictive, dim-witted, indulgent, lazy, frightened and frightening. Students are clever, kind, weak, cruel, snobbish. Lessons are inspiring and tedious—as in the best and worst of real schools” (317). – Roni Natov from “Harry Potter and the Extraordinariness of the Ordinary” When I first began teaching first-year college students in 1994 as a graduate student, I was in my mid-twenties, not much older than my students, and a product of the same popular culture. I frequently made reference to that pop culture and used it for comparison, analysis, and discussion to help my 75 www.cea-web.org Summer/ Fall THE CEA FORUM 2015 students develop their thinking and writing skills. Every year, I grew older and a new class of eighteen- and nineteen-year-olds began their first year at the university or college at which I was teaching. The popular culture of my teens and twenties became a part of the great depth and breadth of events encapsulated in the common student phrase “back in the day,” as the double atrocities of “reality” television and movies based on toys began to capture my students’ interests and as the World Wide Web further atomized those interests. Slowly, but surely, I found myself less skilled and less successful at using pop culture in the classroom as a touchstone or an example.

Harry Potter, Lord Voldemort, and the Importance of Resilience by Emily Anderson A thesis presented to the Honors College of Middle Tennessee State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for graduation from the University Honors College Spring 2017 Harry Potter and the Importance of Resilience by Emily Anderson APPROVED: ____________________________ Dr. Martha Hixon, Department of English Dr. Maria Bachman, Chair, Department of English __________________________ Dr. Teresa Davis, Department of Psychology ___________________________ Dr. Philip E. Phillips, Associate Dean University Honors College ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would like to thank Dr. Hixon for her knowledge and endless support of this thesis even when finishing seemed impossible. I would also like to thank my family for the countless hours spent listening to the importance of resilience in Harry Potter and for always being there to edit, comment on, and support this thesis. i ABSTRACT Literature and psychology inadvertently go hand in hand. Authors create characters that are relatable and seem real. This thesis discusses the connection between psychology and literature in relation to the Harry Potter series. This thesis focuses on the importance of resilience or lack thereof in the protagonist, Harry, and the antagonist Voldemort. Specifically, it addresses resilience as a significant difference between the two. In order to support such claims, I will be using Erik Erikson’s Theory of Psycho-Social Development to analyze the struggles and outcomes of both Harry and Voldemort in relation to resilience and focus on the importance of strong, supportive relationships as a defining factor in the development of resilience. ii TABLE OF CONTENTS ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS……………………………………………………………......i ABSTRACT……………………………………………………………………………….ii CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION ......................................................................................

  • The Unsung Hero of Harry Potter: Neville Longbottom
1 Jaime Feathers The Unsung Hero of Harry Potter: Neville Longbottom The bulk of J.K. Rowling’s magical series chronicles the quests and adventures of the obvious hero of the books, Harry Potter. We wouldn’t expect anything less. It’s also no surprise that the vast majority of the heroism displayed in the story resides firmly within Harry’s grasp. Again, we wouldn’t expect anything less. What we might not expect is that Neville Longbottom, a character who fumbles and bumbles his way through the entire series, is also a hero. Yet that’s exactly what Neville is. Just as Dumbledore says in Sorcerer’s Stone, while speaking of Neville, that “there are all kinds of courage” (306), there are also all kinds of heroism. Neville’s isn’t the obvious, grandiose kind. It is understated and subtle, found hidden within his determination to overcome his blundering nature and his refusal to allow other people’s unfavorable opinions of him to define him. While Harry’s heroism is exciting and entertaining, it’s also larger than life. It is Neville’s heroism that presents itself in an attainable way, giving it the potential to truly resonate within the life of a child. If readers were asked which Harry Potter character they’d most like to emulate, it’s no secret that Neville Longbottom would fall pretty far down on the list. The majority of scenes containing Neville are enough to make anybody cringe. He melts a cauldron in Potions class and blisters himself and his classmates (Sorcerer’s Stone 139).

2021 I Fictional Committee I Agenda 1 Research Report Fictional Committee 1 I Reconstructing the ministry of magic after the Battle of Hogwarts MIS MUN 2021 Drafted by Savera Shah 1 2021 I Fictional Committee I Agenda 1 Table of Contents Table of Contents 2 Introduction 3 Definition of Key Terms 4 Current State of Affairs 6 Stances of Characters 7 Possible Solutions 8 Questions to Consider 9 Bibliography 10 2 2021 I Fictional Committee I Agenda 1 Introduction The Ministry of Magic or M.o.M. was the primary governing body representative of the magical community in Harry Potter. Their main goal was the preservation of law regarding magic. Furthermore, the Ministry of Magic keeps Muggles from finding out about the culture of magical folk. Essentially, the Ministry is a complicated and highly inefficient bureaucracy. Their headquarters are in London and are made up of various Departments. Boards, Committees, and Offices, all of whom enforce the regulations and rules of laws. The Ministry tackles different aspects such as commerce, transportation, magical creatures, sport, and international relations. Within the ministry, there are numerous law enforcement agencies. Their roles are to maintain order, impose laws and rules, manage security breaches, and operate Azkaban (prison for magical criminals). Besides this, the Ministry also maintains groups of Hit-police who protect the wizarding world and deal with criminals. The Wizengamot, High Wizard Court, is a governing body that serves as the ultimate judge of justice for the wizarding world. The ministry unites the British government to the world of witchcraft. Every prime minister of Britain is visited by the Minister for Magic.

  • A Fiction-Based Religion Within the Harry Potter Fandom
Religions 2014, 5, 219–267; doi:10.3390/rel5010219 OPEN ACCESS religions ISSN 2077-1444 www.mdpi.com/journal/religions Article ‘Snapewives’ and ‘Snapeism’: A Fiction-Based Religion within the Harry Potter Fandom Zoe Alderton Independent scholar; E-Mail: [email protected] Received: 18 December 2013; in revised form: 6 February 2014 / Accepted: 11 February 2014 / Published: 3 March 2014 Abstract: The book and film franchise of Harry Potter has inspired a monumental fandom community with a veracious output of fanfiction and general musings on the text and the vivid universe contained therein. A significant portion of these texts deal with Professor Severus Snape, the stern Potions Master with ambiguous ethics and loyalties. This paper explores a small community of Snape fans who have gone beyond a narrative retelling of the character as constrained by the work of Joanne Katherine Rowling. The ‘Snapewives’ or ‘Snapists’ are women who channel Snape, are engaged in romantic relationships with him, and see him as a vital guide for their daily lives. In this context, Snape is viewed as more than a mere fictional creation. He is seen as a being that extends beyond the Harry Potter texts with Rowling perceived as a flawed interpreter of his supra-textual essence. While a Snape religion may be seen as the extreme end of the Harry Potter fandom, I argue that religions of this nature are not uncommon, unreasonable, or unprecedented. Popular films are a mechanism for communal bonding, individual identity building, and often contain their own metaphysical discourses. Here, I plan to outline the manner in which these elements resolve within extreme Snape fandom so as to propose a nuanced model for the analysis of fandom-inspired religion without the use of unwarranted veracity claims.
