    The Image of Chemistry Presented by the Science Museum, London in the Twentieth Century: An International Perspective Peter Morris Abstract: How has chemistry been presented at the Science Museum, London, during the 20 th century? After an overview of the history of the Science Muse- um and its chemistry galleries, four galleries are considered in depth (1906, 1926, 1977, and 1999). The importance of the curators’ external constituency of chemists and chemical educators is emphasized. The image of chemistry at the Science Museum has concentrated on the general utility of chemistry and chemistry as a skilful craft. The presentation has been low-key rather than boosterist. A comparison is made with the chemistry galleries at the Deutsches Museum. Chemistry in the Deutsches Museum has put more emphasis on hands-on exhibits and the chemical industry. Science and technology museums have promoted chemistry in a quiet but successful way for many years, but their influence may have waned along with chemistry kits. Introduction Before we examine the image of chemistry that has been presented by the Science Museum during the 20th century, it is worth asking if science and technology museums have any influence on the public’s perception of chem- istry. While the impact of museums is inevitably less than, say, the mass me- dia, they do attract large audiences: the Science Museum had 1.2 million visi- tors in the 1930s, a peak of 4.2 million visitors in 1980 and 2.6 million visitors in 2004.

Nous resterons durablement meurtris par les actes barbares des mois de janvier et novembre derniers. En attaquant notre jeunesse, notre diversité, nos lieux de vie, nos principes universels, les fanatiques qui s'en sont pris à nos concitoyens n'ont fait que nous rappeler l'importance du « vivre-ensemble » au sein de notre République comme au cœur de nos régions. Cette notion fondamentale du « Vivre ensemble » prend ici, à Guemps, tout son sens. Elle a été notre leitmotiv lors de notre candidature aux élections municipales de 2014 et depuis elle reste présente à nos esprits dans nos petites actions quotidiennes comme dans nos projets de plus grande envergure. Stephen James Abstract The dramatic expansion of the iron industry in Cleveland from 1850 propelled the district briefly to the position of the world’s largest iron-producing centre and brought about the formation of a major industrial cluster in a previously unindustrialised area. By the end of the 1870s, however, its prosperity was threatened by developments in steel-production technology and the growth of iron and steel output in the US and Germany.

Research Fellow Research Institute for Media Art and Performance University of Bedfordshire Luton Campus, Park Square Luton, LU1 3JU, United Kingdom Abstract For Gertrude Bell being ‘as good as any man’ was an objective she tried to prove all her life, not only by climbing the Alps and roaming the Arabian Desert but in almost all aspects of life. This challenge remained with her till the end and may well have been one of the reasons behind her success. Bell was against female suffrage and had eagerly worked to prevent granting the vote to British women, yet she became the first British female officer and many times, exceeded the performance of her male colleagues. Bell enjoyed her role as the Oriental Secretary to Sir Percy Cox to the point of forgetting she was a woman. She insisted she was sexless and dismissed most women as uninteresting. However, her sex facilitated her mission among the Arabs who wondered what British men would be like if this was one of their women. After the vote was partially granted to British women in 1918, Bell embarked on emancipating Iraqi women. This paper highlights the contrast between Bell’s public and private personas, her anti-suffrage activities and her role in emancipating urban women in Iraq.     Les directrices et directeurs d’école n’en peuvent plus. Les directrices et directeurs d’école des circonscriptions de Calais et Audruicq se sont réunis à l’école du Beau- Marais le 1 er décembre avec les représentants des syndicats SE-UNSA, SNE, SNUDI-FO et SNUipp-FSU. Ils dénoncent la suppression des contrats aidés affectés à l’aide administrative qui compromet gravement le fonctionnement des écoles. Ces emplois sont devenus indispensables : - Pour les tâches de secrétariat et la saisie des données informatisées. - Pour réceptionner les appels téléphoniques et y répondre, transmettre les informations, contacter les familles notamment pour le suivi de l’absentéisme… - Pour ouvrir aux différents intervenants dans le respect des règles de sécurité (vigipirate) : enseignants remplaçants, enseignants du Rased ou du Sessad, conseillers pédagogiques, référents MDPH, employés municipaux etc… - Pour accueillir les parents et les élèves pendant le temps scolaire (notamment pour les élèves qui ont un suivi extérieur sur le temps de classe) - Pour aider à la prise en charge des enfants malades ou blessés en cas d'accident … Les directrices et directeurs réclament l’instauration d’une aide administrative pérenne dans chaque école. Dans l’immédiat, ils réclament le maintien des contrats aidés actuels, le rétablissement de ceux qui ont été supprimés et une affectation dans toutes les écoles qui n’en ont jamais eu. Ils décident d’appeler tous les directeurs et directrices à contresigner cet appel et à participer au rassemblement qui a été décidé mercredi 17 janvier 2018 à 10h00 devant la sous-préfecture de Calais pour porter ces revendications et appuyer la délégation qui demandera à être reçue par le sous-préfet.
