Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome to this edition of The Evelyn Grace News. I trust that you will find it Message informative and useful as a way of keeping up to date with our ever increasing number of activities and enrichment opportunities. We are very proud of the successes and achievements of all of our students and I hope you enjoy reading from the about them.

Principal I am very pleased to report that we are continuing to see outstanding academic progress with significant numbers of students. I am especially pleased that students are embracing their Independent Learning Time (ILT) that is now integral to all lessons. Independent Learning Time is an opportunity for your son or daughter to develop resilience and problem solving skills across subjects as well as an opportunity to engage in deep learning and extended writing activities that will develop invaluable skills for the years to come.

Many of you will have attended our annual Prize Giving where students from all Year Groups, including the Year 11 Class of 2013, were recognized for excellence, independent learning and improvement. It was a moving evening and students felt proud of themselves and one another.

Academic achievements are important but at EGA we aspire to deliver holistic education that will develop fully rounded and happy citizens. Many of you will have attended our International Evening last term where we celebrated the rich diversity of world cultures, many represented at the academy. It was fantastic to see so many of our students performing so well at this event.

I am grateful, as I am sure you are, to the hard working staff at EGA who are tireless in their provision of enrichment opportunities for students. This Newsletter is, as ever, able to capture only some select highlights, but you will see that students have attended educational theatre and zoo trips as well as participating in dramatic and musical performances at the academy. In addition, EGA staff are creating ever increasing opportunities for boys and girls to participate in a wide range of sporting events and competitions for students of all ages.

Finally, I would like to thank all parents and carers for your support since September, without which we would not be able to provide the rich and broad variety of curriculum and extra curricular experiences for all of our students. Please continue to support your child’s progress by talking to them regularly about their progress at school and by checking your son or daughter’s planner each evening.

Mr Hanson

International Evening

Evelyn Grace Academy celebrated another stunning evening of music, fashion and great food this term.

Our International Evening, now in its second year was even more spectacular than before. The Sports Hall became ablaze with colour, light and beauty as our students participated in a fashion parade representing countries from around the world.

Staff worked alongside students to put on informative displays and food from countries Year 11 Girls stun the audience with synchronised Indian Dancing from every continent. Well earned applause EGA students are known for their musical talents and this evening was no exception as songs with an international theme were performed by students, including by Precious Coker, Veronic Prendegast, Myesha Bowen, Destiny Adeyemi, Emily Abreu, Peter Nikolov, Marcus Gooden, Marcia Tiexeira and Elohim Bavugize.

Destiny Adeyemi gave a fantastic rendition of her own poetry composition to great applause by an appreciative audience.

Perhaps, for some the hightlight was the arrival of the King and Queen, in the form of Mr Hanson and Ms Griffiths.

For others, the highlight may have been the vast array of delicious food from around the world.

The arrival of the King and Queen added a certain dignity to the evening 019761 Evelyn Grace newsletter_Layout 1 17/12/2013 09:04 Page 7

A group of Year 8 and 9 students went to see the Q brothers adaption of Shakespeare’s Othello entitled Othello the Remix. Students earned a place on the reward trip for excellent work in drama the previous year.

It was a hilarious adaptation of the play, performed entirely through rap and hip hop.

The students absolutely loved it and can’t wait to go to the theatre again! 019761 Evelyn Grace newsletter_Layout 1 17/12/2013 09:06 Page 9
