Why Are You Looking For Jesus?

John 6:22-51 Amen Statements

• V26 - “I tell you the truth, you are looking for me, not because you saw miraculous signs but because you ate the loaves and had your fill. Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you.”

• V32 - “I tell you the truth, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”

• V47 - “I tell you the truth, he who believes has everlasting life. I am the bread of life.” Where Are We? Where Are We?

• Jesus had just feed 5,000 men with 2 fish and 5 loaves

• They ate as much as they wanted

• There were 12 baskets left over

• The people there wanted to make Jesus king - by force if necessary

• The disciples get into a boat to travel across the lake and encounter trouble

on the water and rescues them Where Are We?

• The crowd looks for Jesus the next day.

• They don’t find him where they left him so they go on looking for him.

• Notice not one of them invited Jesus to stay with them

• They are confused as to how Jesus got there. Jesus Addresses The Crowd

• You are looking for me because you had your belly filled

• These people were not interested in spiritual things

• They wanted physical change

• Jesus’ word are sharp criticism

• Why are you looking for Jesus? Do Not Work For Food That Spoils

• What work had these people done to receive food from Jesus?

• What is food that spoils?

• Physical bread

• Physical needs

• What does “do not work” mean?

• Where is your treasure? Matthew 6:21 Work for Food That Won’t Spoil

• What is food that won’t spoil?

• Spiritual truth

• They marveled at the miracle instead of the miracle maker

• The people’s response shows us their heart condition

• They basically respond - Just tell us what to do Jesus so that we can get what we want The Bread of Life

• The work of God is believing in Jesus

• Jesus uses the physical necessity of bread to make a spiritual truth.

• Just as physical life requires food so Spiritual life requires “eating” the Bread of Life

• IN NO WAY IS THIS LITERALLY EATING FLESH AND BLOOD

• This is Jesus explaining that his death would be the food that gives eternal life • We’ve talked about Kingdom First

• We’ve talked about a sacrifice being required

• Today our application is: Why are you looking for Jesus?

• Is he your Savior and King or is he the simply the filler of your belly?
