Day 2 Wednesday 28th August The plane arrived with some delay, so our plans for the morning were rearranged accordingly. We drove to our hotel for the night and enjoyed some free time before an early lunch. During the afternoon we did some birding in the river area and found a good selection of birds that included several groups of smart Azure Tits, a large group of Azure-winged Magpies, several tristis forms of Chifchaff, a single Dusky Warbler, Daurian Jackdaw, many Taiga Flycatchers, Lesser Spotted Woodpecker and loads of raptors. Most were Kites but also Cinereous Vultures, a single Upland Buzzard, a female Goshawk, a close light- phase Booted Eagle and a Hobby! Several butterflies were flitting around in the warm air and included Small and Large White, Small Tortoiseshell and Painted Lady. Day 3 Thursday 29th August A Long-eared Owl was calling during the night and was seen by a few people in the spotlight. -

PART I MASTER PLAN CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION I MASTER PLAN PART I MASTER PLAN CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION 1.1 Background of the Study In Mongolia some 50% of the total population of about 2.4 million are nomadic families. For the nomadic families Sum centers are key places for supplying their vital goods, and also for receiving public services such as administration, medical care, education, etc. As of November 1997, the electric power at 117 out of 314 Sum centers in total in Mongolia is being supplied from the national power transmission network. At the remaining 197 Sum centers, the electric power is supplied by the diesel engine generators by Sum center independently. Most of these diesels generating facilities were manufactured during the former Soviet Union era and installed long ago from 1963 to 1990. During the Social Republic era of the country, Mongolia depended on the Soviet Union for the supply of spare parts necessary for maintenance of the generating equipment and technical guidance. Due to the corruption of the Soviet Union's economy in 1991 and associated transition to a market economy, the following four factors caused troubles to the operation and maintenance of the Sum's generating facilities, i.e. (1) the lack of business operating senses, (2) the interruption of spare parts supply, (3) the lack of technical capability and (4) shortage of management budget. The operation of much equipment has been obliged to be kept stopped after failure, as operators cannot repair them. The affected generation quantity, and aggravated the conditions of daily lives of people in Sum center and caused serious effects to the socio-economic activities of the Sum centers. -

METALLOGENY OF NORTHERN, CENTRAL AND EASTERN ASIA Explanatory Note to the Metallogenic map of Northern–Central–Eastern Asia and Adjacent Areas at scale 1:2,500,000 VSEGEI Printing House St. Petersburg • 2017 Abstract Explanatory Notes for the “1:2.5 M Metallogenic Map of Northern, Central, and Eastern Asia” show results of long-term joint research of national geological institutions of Russia, China, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, and the Republic of Korea. The latest published geological materials and results of discussions for Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and North Korea were used as well. Described metallogenic objects: 7,081 mineral deposits, 1,200 ore knots, 650 ore regions and ore zones, 231 metallogenic areas and metallogenic zones, 88 metallogenic provinces. Mainz, May 2009 Abstract Abstract Mongolia occupies a central position within the eastern branch of the large accretionary Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB) or Altaids. The present work aims to outline the geodynamic environment and possible evolution of this part of the eastern CAOB, predominantly from the Cambrian to the middle Palaeozoic. The investigation primarily focussed on zircon geochronology as well as whole-rock geochemical and Sm–Nd isotopic analyses for a variety of metaigneous rocks from the southern Hangay and Gobi-Altai regions in south-central Mongolia. The southern slope of the Hangay Mountains in central Mongolia exposes a large NW−SE-trending middle Neoproterozoic ophiolitic complex (c. 650 Ma), which is tectonically integrated within an accretionary complex developed between the Precambrian Baydrag and Hangay crustal blocks. Formation of the entire accretionary system along the north-eastern margin of the Baydrag block mainly occurred during the early Cambrian, but convergence within this orogenic zone continued until the early Ordovician, because of on- going southward subduction-accretion of the Baydrag block. An important discovery is the identification of a late Mesoproterozoic to early Neoproterozoic belt within the northern Gobi-Altai that was reworked during the late Cambrian and throughout the late Ordovician/Devonian. -

The magnificent Reeves's Pheasant was one of the many specialties seen on this tour (Brendan Ryan). EASTERN CHINA 3 – 27 MAY 2017 LEADER: HANNU JÄNNES Birdquest’s Eastern China tour, an epic 25 day journey across much of eastern China, focusses on an array of rare Chinese endemics and migrants, and this year’s tour once again proved a great success. The focus of the first part of the tour is to achieve good views of rarities like Spoon-billed Sandpiper, the critically endangered Blue-crowned (Courtois’s) Laughingthrush, the superb Cabot’s Tragopan and Elliot’s Pheasant and the ultra-rare Chinese Crested Tern. This was successfully achieved alongside a plethora of other much sought after species including White-faced Plover, Great Knot, stunning Saunders’s Gulls, Reed Parrotbill, eastern migrants, including Pechora Pipit, Japanese Robin, Japanese Paradise, Yellow-rumped, Narcissus and Mugimaki Flycatchers, and forest species like Brown-chested Jungle Flycatcher, White-necklaced Partridge, Silver Pheasant, Buffy and Moustached Laughingthrushes, Short-tailed Parrotbill, Fork-tailed Sunbird and the delightful Pied Falconet. The second part of the tour, the ‘Northeast Extension’, visited a series of sites for various other Chinese specialities. Beginning in Wuhan, we bagged the amazing Reeves’s Pheasant and Crested Ibis, as well as stunners that included Fairy Pitta and Chestnut-winged Cuckoo. We then moved on to Jiaocheng for the fabulous Brown Eared Pheasants before flying on to Beijing, where the mountains of the nearby Hebei province yielded the endemic Chinese Beautiful Rosefinch, Chinese Nuthatch, Green-backed and Zappey’s Flycatchers and the rare Grey-sided Thrush. -

Of the five crane species we saw on the tour, the Red-crowned Crane is probably the rarest in China, though they still are fairly common in Japan. (Photo by guide Dave Stejskal) Although this was Field Guides' third tour to China with co-leader Jesper Hornskov as our host, this was the first time that we've birded here in May and the first time that we've sampled the riches of "Manchuria" in the n.e. provinces of Jilin and Inner Mongolia. I co-led one of those past tours here with Jesper, but this seemed, to me, to be a completely different tour given the season (those past tours were in September) and the coverage (the inclusion of Manchuria, and the addition of more sites on the Tibetan Plateau in Qinghai Province). There was some overlap this year in coverage with what Jesper and I did on my last tour here - some of the areas around Xining, Koko Nor (Qinghai Lake), Rubber Mountain, Chaka - but I was really impressed with the new bits that were added and I thought that it all made for a wonderful, bird-filled tour of this huge, diverse country. We started this year's trip off with a short visit to Wild Duck Lake near Beijing before flying north to Ulanhot in Jilin Province - what was once known widely as Manchuria. -
