Washington Natural Heritage Program List of Animal Species with Ranks October 2017 The following list of animals known from Washington is complete for resident and transient vertebrates and several groups of invertebrates, including odonates, branchipods, tiger beetles, butterflies, gastropods, freshwater bivalves and bumble bees. Some species from other groups are included, especially where there are conservation concerns. Among these are the Palouse giant earthworm, a few moths and some of our mayflies and grasshoppers. Currently 857 vertebrate and 1,100 invertebrate taxa are included. Conservation status, in the form of range-wide, national and state ranks are assigned to each taxon. Information on species range and distribution, number of individuals, population trends and threats is collected into a ranking form, analyzed, and used to assign ranks. Ranks are updated periodically, as new information is collected. We welcome new information for any species on our list. Cleaning Symbiosis Among California Inshore Fishes
CLEANING SYMBIOSIS AMONG CALIFORNIA INSHORE FISHES EDMUNDS. HOBSON' ABSTRACT Cleaning symbiosis among shore fishes was studied during 1968 and 1969 in southern California, with work centered at La Jolla. Three species are habitual cleaners: the seAoriF, Ozyjulis californica; the sharpnose seaperch, Phanerodon atripes; and the kelp perch, Brachyistius frenatus. Because of specific differences in habitat, there is little overlap in the cleaning areas of these three spe- cies. Except for juvenile sharpnose seaperch, cleaning is of secondary significance to these species, even though it may be of major significance to certain individuals. The tendency to clean varies between in- dividuals. Principal prey of most members of these species are free-living organisms picked from a substrate and from midwater-a mode of feeding that favors adaptations suited to cleaning. Because it is exceedingly abundant in a variety of habitats, the seiiorita is the predominant inshore cleaning fish in California. Certain aspects of its cleaning relate to the fact that only a few of the many seiioritas present at a given time will clean, and that this activity is not centered around well-defined cleaning stations, as has been reported for certain cleaning fishes elsewhere. Probably because cleaners are difficult to recognize among the many seiioritas that do not clean, other fishes.generally do not at- tempt to initiate-cleaning; rather, the activity is consistently initiated by the cleaner itself. An infest- ed fish approached by a cleaner generally drifts into an unusual attitude that advertises the temporary existence of the transient cleaning station to other fish in need of service, and these converge on the cleaner. -

Fishery-at-a-Glance Night Smelt Scientific Name: Spirinchus starksi Range: Night Smelt are distributed coast-wide from southeast Alaska to Point Arguello, Santa Barbara County. Habitat: Night Smelt occur in the surf and in depths from the surface to approximately 400 feet (122 meters). Size (length and weight): Night Smelt measure less than 6 inches total length (140 millimeters) weighing to 11 grams. Males are slightly longer and heavier than females. Life span: Night Smelt are short lived and believed to reach a maximum of 2 to 3 years. Reproduction: Spawning occurs in the surf along open coast coarse sand beaches from January to September. Eggs are fertilized in the wash of the surf, adhere to sand grains, and sink. Hatching occurs in approximately 2 weeks. Prey: Night Smelt feed on small crustaceans—primarily gammarid amphipods and mysid shrimp. Predators: Night Smelt provide forage for a wide range of predators, including Striped Bass, Redtail Surfperch, salmon, Harbor Seals, California Sea Lions, terns, gulls, and cormorants. Fishery: Commercial and recreational fisheries are shore-based. Area fished: Historically, fishing occurred from Moss Landing, Monterey County to the Oregon border. Currently, fishing occurs from San Mateo County to Del Norte County. Fishing season: Fishing occurs during the spawning season—January to September. Fishing gear: Fishermen fish from shore using A-frame dip nets. Market(s): Landed fish are sold for human consumption and aquarium food. Current stock status: No formal stock assessments exist for Night Smelt. Although catch rates have increased on average since the early 2000s, it is undetermined if this increase in the index is due to increased abundance or changes in fishermen behavior. -

CALIFORNIA’S WETFISH INDUSTRY: ITS IMPORTANCE – PAST, PRESENT & FUTURE Executive Summary In major measure, California’s fishing industry was founded on “wetfish.” So called traditionally because these fish were conveyed from ocean to can with minimal preprocessing, “wet from the sea”, sardines, mackerels, squids and anchovies, as well as coastal tunas, have represented the lion’s share of commercial fishery landings in the Golden State since before the turn of the 20th Century. Today sardines, jack and Pacific mackerel, anchovy and market squid are called, for management purposes, Coastal Pelagic Species (CPS). Another link among these species: all are harvested primarily with round-haul nets (lampara and purse seine). The complex of fisheries that comprises the wetfish industry has shaped the character of California’s culture in addition to the infrastructure of California’s fishing industry. The immigrant fishermen of Asian, Italian, Slavic and other nationalities introduced new fishing gear and helped to build the fishing ports of San Pedro and Monterey, as well as San Diego and San Francisco. Although changed in many ways, the wetfish industry today remains an essential, critically important part of California’s fishing industry as a whole. In the year 2000, the wetfish fishery complex produced about 455.5 million pounds (227,734 short tons) of fish, 83.6 percent of total commercial fishery landings in California, valued at $38.9 million ex-vessel, or 29.3 percent of total value of all fisheries in California. Fairbanks, Alaska May 2014 v Abstract The sculpin subfamily Oligocottinae is a group of 17 nearshore species and is noteworthy for the fact that it contains both intertidal and subtidal species, copulating and non- copulating species, and many species with very broad geographic ranges. These factors, as well as the consistency with which the constituent genera have been grouped together historically, make the Oligocottinae an ideal group for the study of the evolution of a reproductive mode known as internal gamete association (IGA), which is unique to sculpins. I conducted a phylogenetic study of the oligocottine sculpins based on an extensive molecular dataset consisting of DNA sequences from eight genomic regions. From the variability present in those sequences, I inferred phylogenetic relationships using parsimony, maximum likelihood, and Bayesian inference. Results of these phylogenetic analyses show that some historical taxonomy and classifications require revision to align taxonomy with evolutionary relatedness. -
