The annual Veterans Program at Cookeville High School will feature special tributes to World War II veter- ans as the country observes the 75th anniversary of D-Day. The program, scheduled for Nov. 7, is open to the public and will fea- ture the CHS Chorus, Band, Drama Department, JROTC and students representing the student body. U.S. Rep. hen I was teaching English at Cookeville High School, a colleague suggested that I step away from some of the traditional literature typically taught in 9th grade, and recom- Wmended the book, “Whirligig” by Paul Fleischman. It’s about a teen boy trying to fi t in at a new school. He goes to a party, where he’s humiliated af- ter being rejected by a girl he likes and leaves the party drunk and enraged. He drives recklessly in a haphazard attempt on his own life and ultimately kills another young person, Lea. But Lea’s mother wants a punish- ment diff erent from jail time. Brent travels to the four corners of the United LINDSAY States to build and place whirligigs in McREYNOLDS Lea’s memory. Nearly 10 years after I read this with LETTERS TO THE EDITOR a 9th grade English class, I thought of this story once again this week when Richard Collins of New Mexico was sentenced to six years for the vehicular homicide of a 5-year-old boy.
