2 North Korean diplomat defects from London embassy (2.04/3) Thae Yong Ho, who was based at the North Korean embassy in Ealing, west London, has reportedly arrived with his family in Seoul, making him the highest-ranking diplomat ever to defect to the South. He had vanished earlier this month with his wife and children. Thae defected due to discontent with the regime and for the future of his child, the South’s Unification Ministry said. Jeong Joon-Hee, spokesman at the ministry, told a news conference: “They are currently under government protection and relevant institutions are going ahead with necessary procedures as usual.” Jeong declined to give details on the timing of Thae’s arrival or his itinerary. South Korean JoongAng Ilbo newspaper said he embarked on a defection journey “following a scrupulous plan” and was in the process of “landing in a third country as an asylum seeker.” An official at the North Korean embassy in London would not confirm the defection, describing reports of the event as “quite sudden.” “If it is appropriate to give a response, then you might hear about our response,” the official told Reuters. Thae’s younger son studied at a school in West London. According to one of his classmates, Louis Prior, 19, the boy vanished in mid-July. “We were really good friends. He was on Facebook every day and WhatsApp. Suddenly all his social media accounts went dark,” Prior told . “We have been really worried about him. We all tried his phone. It’s been blocked. He’s a good mate. He just vanished.” According to Prior, his friend had been born in Denmark where his father was posted. The family returned to North Korea and arrived in the UK four years ago. He said Thae’s son had taken his A-Levels and was about to take up a place at Imperial College, London, studying mathematics and computer science. The Foreign Office told the Guardian it was investigating. The head of Chatham House’s Asia program, John Nilsson-Wright, said intelligence agencies would want to grill the diplomat as he could have useful insider information concerning Kim Jong-un’s regime. “These senior officials are smart, accomplished, well-trained individuals with high levels of English. If sent abroad, they don’t spend their time going to cocktail parties. They will be energetic in other activities, including foul means for fair,” he told the Guardian. Why the diplomat chose to defect remains an open question, be it for personal or political reasons, he said. Nilsson-Wright says relations between the UK and North Korea are complicated. Britain has had an ambassador in Pyongyang since 2001. There is an ongoing cultural dialogue, including academic exchanges whereby North Korean students can study at Cambridge University. Defectors from North Korea are usually treated harshly by the regime. The country has been known to pursue defectors abroad and if it finds them, “mete out draconian punishment,” Nilsson-Wright said. Overall, the number of defectors, mostly from the area near North Korea’s border with China, has declined since Kim Jong-un took power following his father Kim Jong-il’s death in late 2011.

What Brexit? UK jobless rate falls to 11-yr low — RT Business (1.02/3) The unemployment rate remained at 4.9 percent in the three months to June, according to official data released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) on Wednesday. Average earnings grew 2.4 percent compared with a year earlier, with total pay excluding bonuses rising 2.3 percent, the ONS reports. READ MORE: UK consumers keep spending despite Brexit uncertainty The latest data also shows that the claimant count – which measures the number of people claiming for unemployment-related benefits – fell by 8,600 against a previously projected 9,500 increase. Overall, 172,000 people joined the workforce during the period covered. The unemployment data followed Tuesday’s inflation rate update which revealed consumer prices index (CPI) growth was a higher-than-expected 0.6 percent in July. Data published by the agency last month showed the unemployment rate in the UK was lower in the three months to May, reaching 4.9 percent – the lowest since 2005 with average wages rising 2.3 percent year-on-year. The unemployment level, seen as one of the major indicators of Brexit-vote impact on the country’s economy, will be continuously observed by the economists in the coming months. According to analysts, the full effects of the historic decision on employer confidence and hiring prospects are still to be seen. The pound sterling posted brief gains following the announcement, reaching 1.3069 against the US dollar.

Turkey coup: Release for 38,000 prisoners jailed before coup (1.02/3) Turkey is to release conditionally 38,000 prisoners jailed before last month's failed coup, while its jails are crowded with new detainees. Some 23,000 people have been detained or arrested since the July coup, although the government has not said its move is to free up space for them. The justice minister said those who had served half their sentence, rather than two-thirds, would be eligible. Crimes such as murder and sex abuse would be excluded, he said. It is clear that the post-coup clampdown has stretched the prison service to breaking point and extra capacity is urgently needed, the BBC's Mark Lowen reports from Istanbul. Some 187,000 people were being held in Turkey's 364 prisons this year, according to figures published in March by Turkey's justice ministry (in Turkish). That figure was already 4,000 higher than the capacity and the recent detentions have placed the system under extra strain. The government is not directly linking the decision on prison release to the post-coup clampdown - it would not accept there is a problem with prison overcrowding, But when more than 23,000 people are under arrest or detention within a month, any country would struggle to cope. Turkey's prison population has more than trebled since the governing AK Party came to power in 2002, with reports of prisoners sleeping in shifts. Capacity will be stretched even further with the new arrests. Rights groups here believe political opponents are being rounded up under the pretext of backing the coup-plotters or the alleged mastermind, US- based cleric Fethullah Gulen. But the government insists that all those detained or investigated have proven links to the Gulen network. The biggest purge in Turkey's modern history is straining the country. Judges and police are among those fired, so processing cases will be even harder. But the government says that the gravest attack the Turkish state has ever faced requires the sternest of responses. Justice Minister Bekir Bozdag emphasised the conditional release did not apply to anyone convicted of crimes committed since 1 July, which automatically disqualifies anyone arrested in the aftermath of the failed coup a fortnight later. It was not an amnesty, he added. Since the coup was put down, Turks have witnessed a purge of people in the military and public services suspected of supporting US-based cleric Fethullah Gulen, who is accused of orchestrating the plot. As well as thousands of detentions, 82,000 people have been dismissed or suspended from their jobs. Further dismissals were reported on Wednesday, affecting 2,360 police and dozens of civil servants and staff from the military and coast guard. Some 240 people died resisting the coup on 15 and 16 July, as rebel parts of the military tried to seize control of Turkey, sending tanks into Ankara and Istanbul. 6 Michael Moore: Donald Trump Never Wanted To Be President (0.03/3) Michael Moore said he knows “for a fact” that Donald Trump doesn’t want to be president. (Photo: Getty Images) In a post published on his website Tuesday , the 62- year-old filmmaker claims the Republican nominee entered the race because he wanted a better deal with NBC as the host of “The Apprentice.” “Donald Trump never actually wanted to be President of the United States,” Moore writes. “I know this for a fact. I’m not going to say how I know it.” (RELATED: Michael Moore Responded To The Orlando Massacre With This Tweet About Guns) “Trump was unhappy with his deal as host and star of his hit NBC show, ‘The Apprentice’ (and ‘The Celebrity Apprentice’),” he continued. “Simply put, he wanted more money. He had floated the idea before of possibly running for president in the hopes that the attention from that would make his negotiating position stronger.” (Photo: Getty Images) “But he knew, as the self-proclaimed king of the dealmakers, that saying you’re going to do something is bupkus — DOING it is what makes the bastards sit up and pay attention. Trump had begun talking to other networks about moving his show. This was another way to get leverage — the fear of losing him to someone else — and when he ‘quietly’ met with the head of one of those networks, and word got around, his hand was strengthened. He knew then that it was time to play his Big Card. He decided to run for President.” “Trump, to his own surprise, ignited the country, especially among people who were the opposite of billionaires. He went straight to #1 in the polls of Republican voters. Up to 30,000 boisterous supporters started showing up to his rallies.” WATCH: “Soon, though, his karma caught up with him,” Moore added. “Calling Mexicans ‘rapists’ should have disqualified him on Day One (or for saying Obama wasn’t born here, as he did in 2011). No, it took 13 months of racist, sexist, stupid comments before he finally undid himself with the trifecta of attacking the family of a slain soldier, ridiculing the Purple Heart and suggesting that the pro-gun crowd assassinate Hillary Clinton.” “By this past weekend, the look on his face said it all — ‘I hate this! I want my show back!’ But it was too late. He was damaged goods, his brand beyond repair, a worldwide laughing stock — and worse, a soon-to-be loser.” (Photo: Reuters) Moore then claimed that Trump is purposefully sabotaging his own campaign. (RELATED: Michael Moore Just Declared The Republican Party Dead) “But, let me throw out another theory, one that assumes that Trump isn’t as dumb or crazy as he looks. Maybe the meltdown of the past three weeks was no accident. Maybe it’s all part of his new strategy to get the hell out of a race he never intended to see through to its end anyway.” “Because, unless he is just ‘crazy,’ the only explanation for the unusual ramping up, day after day, of one disgustingly reckless statement after another is that he’s doing it consciously (or subconsciously) so that he’ll have to bow out or blame ‘others’ for forcing him out.” (Photo: Reuters) “Many now are sensing the end game here because they know Trump seriously doesn’t want to do the actual job — and, most importantly, he cannot and WILL NOT suffer through being officially and legally declared a loser — LOSER! — on the night of November 8th.” (RELATED: Michael Moore Gets SHUT DOWN For Making This Brash Assumption About Guns)

Sadie Hartley murder: What drove a woman to kill her love rival? (0.01/3) Sarah Williams has been found guilty of stabbing to death her love rival. But what led the 35-year-old to murder Sadie Hartley? On a cold evening just days into 2016, businesswoman Sadie Hartley returned home after tending her horse. A short time later, she was dead - shot with a 500,000-volt stun gun and stabbed 41 times by love rival Sarah Williams, a ski instructor. Ms Hartley was found by police the following night, 15 January, face down in a pool of blood following an act described in Preston Crown Court as "uncontrolled butchery". The 60-year-old medical communications director and her partner Ian Johnston, 57, had shared a £500,000 home in the Lancashire mill town of Helmshore since 2014. They had been in a relationship, at times intermittently, since 2005. But in 2011 Mr Johnston, an ex-fireman, met Williams, now 35, at the indoor ski slope of Manchester's Chill Factore, where they were both working. She was more than 20 years younger than him but, two years later, they had embarked on a sexual relationship. Williams confided in a text message to a friend that the "fireman is just totally awesome... I'm hook, line and sinker". She wrote in another text message: "The fireman has feelings for the golden haired, brilliantly creative and creatively brilliant She Devil. " She added: "I'm screaming at a pitch where only dogs and bats can hear me. " The relationship would become a fatal obsession for Williams, who wanted to continue the affair even when Mr Johnston tried to dump her some months later. But when he went on a skiing holiday with Ms Hartley he continued flirting with Williams, who was staying at the same hotel. She was there with her married lover David Hardwick - labelled in court as a "sugar daddy" - with whom she had been in a relationship since she was 17 and he was 57. Now aged 75, the semi-retired businessman said he had "no idea" Williams had been having an affair with Mr Johnston. Mr Hardwick admitted he paid for up to 12 holidays a year - for himself and Williams - in addition to giving her £75,000 towards buying a house and paying £320 a week into her bank account by standing order. Williams told the jury her relationship with Mr Johnston had "basically broken down" in 2014 but she remained obsessed with him. In September that year she sent an anonymous letter to Ms Hartley, boasting she had had "fantastic" sex with Mr Johnston and accusing her of blackmailing him to stay together. Williams admitted in court "it was a crap thing to do". Mr Johnston told the jury: "Sadie asked me who it was from and I said it was Sarah Williams. " The two women had a phone conversation afterwards, with Williams telling the court Ms Hartley did not ask her why she had written the letter but did ask if she lived nearby. Williams admitted in court it was not the first time she had sent a "vengeful" letter in jealousy. Some years earlier, she had a relationship with Somapat Sitiwitjana, a married Thai martial arts and ski instructor, known as Master A. The court heard his wife found out about the affair when Williams visited her home in May 2012 and when, two weeks later, she sent a letter saying "I think you should know about the sort of scumbag you are married to... " In the note, she claimed she was pregnant by him - although she was not - and included a baby scan image, admitting in court it was actually that of a friend's baby. In 2014, following a short break in their relationship, Ms Hartley and Mr Johnston decided to move in together to a new home in Helmshore. Williams continued to send Mr Johnston messages, which he did not block. In December 2015 they exchanged explicit texts that carried on into the new year, when he was in Switzerland. Ms Hartley had been due to join him there for a skiing break but never made it. Her murder on 14 January had been planned by Williams and her friend Katrina Walsh, who worked as a horse-riding instructor. Described in court as "well-educated, extremely intelligent, eccentric", Walsh chose not to give evidence during the trial. The 56-year-old earlier told police she never believed Williams would carry out the crime and that she thought they were playing a game inspired by Hunted - the Channel 4 show where people try to avoid detection by "going off-grid". The friends visited Germany before Christmas and bought the 500,000-volt stun gun. The saleswoman recalled Williams wanted to buy a device capable of firing one million volts before finding out it was not in stock. As a horse riding instructor, Katrina Walsh first met Sarah Williams at stables when the latter was aged 12. Known as Kitt, she married Kevin Walsh in 1984 but he left her for another woman in 2008. Walsh, 56, who suffered from alopecia, was in a biker group, used Tarot cards and would make dragon-themed pendants. She bought the car and the tracker used in the murder plot, along with the knife and some of the clothing Williams would wear. After their arrests, the pair, who had an age gap of 20 years, fell out and did not acknowledge each other in court - Walsh barely lifting her head while Williams made notes. Walsh's copious diary entries recorded the plan to kill Sadie Hartley, with the former riding instructor noting she had "no moral qualms". Ten days before the murder, Williams sent Walsh a text that read: "Don't forget to crack on with your shopping... suddenly it's time. " The next day Walsh bought the knife used in the murder with her Tesco Clubcard. A week before the murder, the friends went on a daring "dry run" to scout out Ms Hartley's home. Walsh delivered a bunch of chrysanthemums directly to Ms Hartley at her door, while Williams watched from a distance. On 14 January, the latter drove alone at night to the Helmshore residence. A neighbour's CCTV camera showed Williams parking up at the end of the road, leaving her car and then - four minutes later - calmly returning. In that short time, Ms Hartley had answered the door to Williams who then fired the stun gun and stabbed her 41 times. Senior investigating officer Paul Withers, from Lancashire Police, called it a "frenzied attack" and said: "Sadly Sadie suffered absolutely appalling injuries and, I would suggest, very quickly lost her fight for life". Throughout the case both Williams and Walsh denied murder, with the former claiming she was asleep at her Chester home when Ms Hartley was killed. But CCTV footage showed her driving after the attack to a car park in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire, where she met Walsh who then drove her home in a separate car. Walsh tried to destroy her friend's blood-stained clothes and boots, and hide them at a farm. After her arrest, she took investigating officers to the area where they found the stun gun, knife and incriminating diary entries. Police also found Ms Hartley's DNA on Williams's bath and spectacles. Williams and Walsh were described in court as former friends who had "fallen out now and blame each other". Even Walsh's defence barrister described the pair as "vile" and "guilty as sin". Mr Johnston has since said: "I've been a fool, I was unwitting", adding he did not think his relationship with Williams would lead to "such a savage horrible murder". "If [Sadie's family] feel that I was contributing, I apologise wholeheartedly. I can never, ever, come to terms with that. "

50% of graduates who paid £9k per year tuition fees are back living with parents – report — RT UK The National Union of Students (NUS) report highlighted the post- university situation of the first graduates to have paid £9,000 (US$11,700) per year in tuition fees, after costs were hiked in 2012. The report’s findings revealed that 47 percent of students were living with their parents seven months after graduating. But the bad news didn’t end there. Seven out of 10 students surveyed said they were concerned about the student debt they had accumulated, and half thought their degree wasn’t worth the fees. More than three-quarters of graduates said they are concerned the government might change the terms of their student loans to make them pay back more. In addition to education debt, six out of 10 of the students surveyed graduated with consumer debt averaging £2,600. Forty-six percent had accumulated additional debt since leaving university. When it came to employment, 52 percent were in full-time work, while 13 percent were working part-time and 2 percent were self-employed. Approximately 8 percent said they were unemployed, while 17 percent were studying for a post-graduate qualification. Sorana Vieru, NUS vice president for higher education, spoke of the “double jeopardy” faced by students upon graduation. “They enter the world of work having paid far more for their education, with the debts hanging over them. Yet they receive far less benefit from this education in the labor market compared to previous generations, while living costs keep rising and the welfare safety net is shrinking,” Vieru said in a statement. Women found themselves in a less fortunate situation than men, with the report showing three times as many men employed in full-time jobs earning more than £30,000. Meanwhile, double the number of women were earning less than £15,000. The report, released Wednesday, was based on an online survey of more than 500 graduates who had been full-time students at British universities. It was a follow-up to a similar poll last summer of the same respondents, which looked at the cost of education and its impact on students’ decision- making. Tuition fees were nearly trebled in 2012, jumping up to a maximum of £9,000 a year for undergraduate courses. The move sparked protests and campus occupations across the country. The British government confirmed last month fees will now be raised once again, with students facing annual tuition costs of £9,250 from September 2017.

Britain’s military power an illusion made from myth, says scholar — RT UK Writing for the Democratic Audit UK website on Tuesday, University of Warwick academic Dr. Mike Finn gave a savage critique of the James Bond self-delusion which helped fuel the EU referendum ‘ Leave ’ campaign. Finn argued the campaign led by the likes of Michael Gove and Boris Johnson – “ who consider themselves to be historians of sorts, articulating Britain’s place in the world in historical terms ” – was based on contrived post-war ideas about “ British pluck ” and a myth of “ specialism. ” Their heady “ visions of Britain’s pas t” are “ rooted in myth, not history, and this has implications for the decision they are asking us to take, ” Finn said. “ Standing alone has been the exception, rather than the norm. Apart from those heroic months in 1940 and early 1941, Britain has faced the world – in war and peace – with allies. ” Since the Harold Macmillan government’s courting of the US since the 1950s – a period in which the UK self-importantly tried to position itself as a sagacious ancient power ready to guide an emergent America – the UK has allowed itself to buy into its own spin. “ This attempt at defining a ‘special relationship’ owed much to British culture and snobbery; Americans might have the money and the power, but they didn’t have the class or the guile. On those scores, nobody did it better than Britain ,” he said of the strategy. In popular culture, says Finn, this “ escapism ” was represented by Britain’s most famous fictional cold warrior: James Bond 007. “ Bond was the living embodiment of Britain’s self-delusion, superior in every way to his American counterparts, ” he argued. “ Successive generations of Britons internalized the Bond mythology; Britain might be outnumbered and outgunned, but in the end ‘nobody does it better’. ” This is nowhere better demonstrated than in Michael Gove’s attitudes towards the UK’s Armed Forces, Finn claims, arguing that the British military, far from being “ the best in the world, ” is dilapidated and of debatable utility. The fantasy of the “ supposedly-supernatural powers ” of units like the SAS “ are invoked by the tabloids, politicians and pub pundits alike for any crisis Britain may wish to involve itself in, ” said Finn. Likewise the Royal Air Force (RAF) – “ itself part of the ‘British specialism’ narrative” – is put on a pedestal due to the “undeniable heroism against superior numbers in the summer of 1940 ” yet now “ operates clapped-out ancient Tornado airframes. ” He cites one RAF source who, before the December 2015 vote on bombing Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) in Syria, claimed “ operations from Cyprus were being conducted with ‘broken jets and tired … fed-up people. ’” According to Finn, Britain’s heroic mythology also tends to obscure the fact “ the two conflicts of Iraq and Afghanistan, followed by subsequent defense cuts, have dealt huge blows to the army’s ability to operate autonomously. ” British sea power fares little better given “ today’s Royal Navy has no aircraft carriers and it is questionable whether it can really consider itself a ‘bluewater navy’ given its lack of organic air support and dwindling numbers of escort vessels. ” “ At least in part this is due to [Conservative-Liberal Democrat] coalition cuts which Gove was a party to, ” he adds. Far from being an independent or specialist power, Finn points out that British military planning “ has increasingly moved towards models of co- dependency on allies for resources the UK simply cannot provide. But whether one takes a positive or negative view of such dependency, it is the reality. “ For decades, the EU has been an easy target to pass the buck for British politicians keen to abdicate responsibility for their own choices, ” he argues of the Brexit vote, adding that the European Union had been too often framed as a “ sinister continental conspiracy when it was in fact an elective choice of successive British governments. ” “ For several generations, Britain’s politicians told themselves – and their publics – comforting lies about Britain’s place in the world. ” “ Now, for reasons of a petty party squabble, the British public is expected to sort that out for them. The outcome of any Brexit, however, will more than likely be an ever-diminishing return on Britain’s post-war fantasies, ” Finn concluded.

Japanese Coast Guard video claims to show hundreds of Chinese ships near disputed Senkaku Islands — RT News The video, apparently shot from inside a low-flying patrol aircraft, has been released online by the Japanese Coast Guard, the Japan Times reported on Tuesday. It shows what Japan said were multiple Chinese vessels traveling near the Senkaku Islands – known in China as the Diaoyu Islands – as well as Japanese patrol ships trying to prevent the Chinese ships from advancing into the disputed area. At the end of the video, the 1,500-ton Japanese patrol ship Aguni, armed with 20mm cannon, approaches a Chinese Coast Guard vessel and a fishing boat. The Aguni then flashes a warning: “Your ship has intruded into the territorial waters of our country … passage in Japanese waters is not allowed. Get out of this area immediately,” according to Japanese captions to the video cited by the newspaper. The Japanese Coast Guard later claimed that seven out of 18 Chinese patrol vessels spotted around the Senkakus were equipped with what “looked like machine guns,” according to the Japan Times. “Actions by the Chinese side like this, which will escalate the situation, are not tolerable,” the Japanese Coast Guard said in a statement. The apparently recent footage shows 200 to 300 Chinese fishing boats accompanied by 28 Chinese patrol ships spotted in areas just outside Japanese territorial waters around the Senkakus. The Senkaku Islands are administered by Japan but are claimed by China. The incident added fuel to tensions between and Beijing. Last Tuesday, Japanese Deputy Foreign Minister Akitaka Saiki summoned Chinese Ambassador Cheng Yonghua to the ministry and filed a protest, according to the AP. But the heated dispute between Beijing and Tokyo over the national affiliation of the Senkaku/Diaoyu Islands dates back to 2012, when the Japanese government nationalized the islands' ownership. Beijing has never recognized the move, claiming Chinese authority over the islands. READ MORE: Nazi gold train could be discovered this week as researchers get ready to dig Unearthing 300 tons of gold hidden in a tunnel by the Nazis in 1945 takes time, apparently. An impromptu Polish-language press conference streamed live on Wednesday morning had very few updates, except to announce their next media scrum. The team of up to 35 people began digging into an embankment alongside a stretch of railway track between the cities of Wroclaw and Walbrzych in southwest Poland on Tuesday. During that effort, the team dug up to a depth of 12 meters (36ft). While they didn’t find the mysterious train, they did uncover a line of “very heavy rock.” During a press conference at the site Tuesday evening, Christel Focken, a spokesperson for the exploration group, suggested a tunnel may be under this rock, but some social media users have noted that such rock would be normal for the area. The team did unearth materials in the soil which they said were not native to the local area. Focken said she's “hopeful” this means the mound they’re digging is a man- made structure. The dig resumed Wednesday morning with the group moving to where they think the entrance of the tunnel is, with the aim of digging under the rock from a different angle. Following their dig, a press conference detailing their findings will be live streamed from the site on the group’s Facebook page. Locals believe a stretch of tunnel buried under the earth is the hiding place for a train filled with gold and weapons by the Nazis before World War II ended in 1945.

Caster Semenya braces for inevitable controversy In the immediate aftermath of her victory, it was announced the athlete would be subjected to gender testing, a decision that outraged the South African government, who accused the IAAF of racism. The athlete herself is keen to highlight that she is a human being first - and an athlete second. Semenya, who has been subject to a strict media ban while in Rio said: "I am not a fake. I am natural. I am just being Caster. "I don't want to be someone I don't want to be. I don't want to be someone people want me to be. I just want to be me. I was born like this. I don't want any changes. " Whatever is written or said about Semenya, she has been cleared to compete at the Rio Games and, as the fastest woman over 800 metres this year, is the clear favourite to take gold, with many tipping her to break the world record. Semenya is a figure who polarises opinion - considered an icon of the LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Queer) community in South Africa, but subject to cruel and unusual criticism globally. The athlete herself is committed to keep running, even if banned from competing with women due to her naturally high levels of testosterone. The runner said: "Running is what I will always do. "Even if, maybe, the authorities could have stopped me from running in 2009, they could not have stopped me in the fields. I would have carried on with my running, it doesn't matter. When I run I feel free, my mind is free. " Semenya has a very real shot of claiming the 800-metre gold in Rio. Whether or not she gets to keep that medal and remain running competitively, only time and the Court for the Arbitration of Sport will tell. The competition she will be facing up to in Rio will include Burundi's Francine Niyonsaba, who currently sits in second on the IAAF Dimaond League standings for the women's 800 metres. She won the Birmingham meeting in June in Semenya's absence. The United Sates will be pinning their hopes on World Indoor Championships 2016 silver medalist Ajee Wilson.

Neonicotinoid insecticides on oilseed rape lead to bee decline across England, study says — RT UK Wild bees are vulnerable to neonicotinoids, a class of neuro-active insecticides chemically similar to nicotine, the research, led by the Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (CEH) in the UK, says. Neonicotinoids are absorbed by the plant, thus making it toxic for insects. The scientists have been examining changes in 62 species of wild bees between 1994 and 2011 which, according to the study is the time period “spanning the introduction of wide-scale commercial use of neonicotinoids.” READ MORE: Common pesticide could hinder bumblebees’ ability to pollinate plants – study “The scientists found evidence suggesting that neonicotinoid use is linked to large-scale and long-term decline in wild bee species distributions and communities,” says a statement from CEH press release. It turns out that the decline in the wild bee population was “three times stronger” among those species that regularly feed on oilseed rape crop. Also “oilseed rape is a principle mechanism of neonicotinoid exposure among wild bee communities,” the study said. The researchers concluded that neonicotinoid use “is correlated with wild bee biodiversity losses at a national scale.” READ MORE: Bee genocide: Nearly half of US honey hives collapsed in past 12 months “As a flowering crop, oilseed rape is beneficial for pollinating insects. This benefit however, appears to be more than nullified by the effect of neonicotinoid seed treatment on a range of wild bee species,” lead author Dr. Ben Woodcock said. The study was hailed by environmental campaigners for providing one of the strongest pieces of evidence of the harmful effects of neonicotinoids on bees. “With this dramatic evidence, it looks like case closed on neonics and bees. We must now be reassured that UK and EU regulators will ensure that all future pesticides are bee safe and that the severe harm neonics are causing to freshwater ecosystems is also resolved,” Matt Shardlow, chief executive of the charity Buglife, told the Guardian. The research “adds a huge new peak to the existing mountain of evidence showing the risk these chemicals pose to our bees,” Friends of the Earth campaigner Paul de Zylva added. Users on social media also criticized the harmful effects of pesticides on bees. “I wonder how much more evidence is needed for NFU [National Farmers Union in England and Wales] to take this on board?” @B_Strawbridge wrote in a tweet to CEH. This is not the first research that blames neonicotinoids for harmful environment impacts. In November 2015 a study by UK scientists found that after exposure to neonicotinoids, bumblebees faced hindered pollination abilities – they visited fewer flowers and returned with less pollen. The scientists proved that neonicotinoids impact the nervous and immune systems of bees, leaving them open to disease. In 2013 the European Union imposed a two-year moratorium on some types of the chemical, and it is scheduled to be reviewed in 2016. In 2015 Canadian city of banned all neonicotinoids without exception.

" Local radio legend Bob Mabena was one of those who took exception to the picture. Posting a copy of it on his Instagram, he lambasted it for being both "stupid" and an "offensive lapse in judgement. " "@theellenshow I wouldn't go so far as to call her racist for this stupid picture. Let's call it offensive lapse in judgement. Sorely disappointed at Ellen," he wrote. But as fans got into a debate with Bob over the picture, he became more heated on the topic, explaining that it came at a bad time after the Marikana massacre commemorations and "prejudice at the Olympics against black athletes. " "It's not just a picture. Look closer and think like a liberated & conscious black person," he told one follower. "It doesn't matter what the caption says. The picture is that of a smiling white madam riding a black man like a mule. Surely you can see the insensitivity in this depiction. Surely," he told another follower. He also hit back at a follower who suggested that he "chill", accusing insensitive white ignorant people of treating "black lives like jokes. " "I will never chill on this dismissive and insensitive white ignorant approach to our past as black people. Never ever ever. They always remind us of the holocaust. I will always be on the lookout for their ignorance of how they have always and continue to treat black lives as joke. Espallardo was killed along with five other soldiers in an anti-drug operation against a man identified as Commander Madrox, whom Navy officials described as a “primary” drug dealer, in Barangay Nabalawag in Midsayap, North Cotabato. 20 Glass-coated kite string kills 3 people in India’s capital NEW DELHI — Indian police say three people, including two children, have died after their throats were slashed by glass-coated kite string used in competitions to bring down the kites of rivals. A 3-year-old girl riding with her parents in a car had her head out of the sunroof when her throat was cut by a kite string, her uncle said Wednesday. The other victims were a 4-year-old boy who was also looking out of the sunroof of a car, and a man who fell off a motorbike after his throat was cut by a string and it became tangled around his neck. The man, Jafar Khan, suffered a fatal head injury, said his father, Ayub Khan. The deaths occurred in New Delhi on Monday, which was India’s Independence Day, when many people fly kites to celebrate. Accidents involving kite string have been on the rise in recent years. Popular among kite flyers is a type of string imported from China that is almost invisible but is coated with glass or metal shards. The strings are used to cut the strings of other kites. The city government banned the sale of glass-coated kite string following the three deaths, saying anyone violating the prohibition could be fined up to 100,000 rupees ($1,500). Several states have banned the use of glass-coated string but it remains available in stores. TVJ

Duterte slams UN for ‘interfering’ in Philippine drug war MANILA, Philippines — The brash-talking Philippine president criticized the United Nations on Wednesday for condemning the spate of killings of suspected drug criminals in his country while allegedly keeping silent on deadlier violence in the Middle East. President Rodrigo Duterte chided the U. N. for being “easy to be swayed into interfering into the affairs of the republic” and “coming on a very stupid proposition.” He was apparently referring to condemnations by U. N. Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon in June and the U. N. Office on Drugs and Crime earlier this month of Duterte’s “apparent endorsement of extrajudicial killings, which is illegal and a breach of fundamental rights and freedoms.” In a speech at the national police headquarters, Duterte said the deaths tallied in his anti-drug campaign include those who engaged in shootouts with police, as well as those killed by other drug criminals. “For those who are killed by the other drug syndicate we can only investigate, but do not attribute the acts of other criminals upon my government,” he said. According to the national police count, as of last week, more than 500 have been killed in gunfights with police and nearly 8,000 have been arrested in the government anti-illegal drugs campaign. But local media and other groups have higher tallies, some nearly 1,000, and have included apparent victims of summary killings. Duterte said he will not relent in the fight against drugs until the apparatus of drug traffickers is destroyed. “Why would the United Nations be so easy to be swayed into interfering into the affairs of the republic?” he asked. “There are about just 1,000 (dead) and there are a lot of people — innocent women, children, young women, young men, old women being killed elsewhere in the world.” He said he has not heard the United Nations or the U. N. chief complaining publicly about the higher Middle East death tolls or criticizing “the countries who are into it and bombing villages and communities, killing everybody there including the goats and the cows and the dogs.” Duterte was not specific, but Ban has addressed a number of conflicts around the globe in recent days. The U. N. chief on Tuesday condemned a reported airstrike on a hospital in Yemen that killed at least 11 people. The same day, he launched an investigation into U. N. peacekeepers’ alleged inaction during a violent rampage of troops in South Sudan. Over the weekend, Ban condemned an attack by suspected rebels that killed at least 36 people in northeastern Congo. Duterte made an earlier profanity-laced tirade against the U. N. when he was president-elect in June after foreign and local media group criticized his comments that corrupt journalists were legitimate targets of assassination. TVJ RELATED VIDEO

Duterte shames De Lima and says ‘drugs must be destroyed’ MANILA — President Duterte was relentless in his public shaming of personalities with suspected ties to illegal drugs, this time targeting an “immoral” senator who, he claimed, has been in an affair with her drug-addicted driver. Asked to name the government official he was referring to at the Philippine National Police event earlier on Wednesday , he directly named “De Lima,” obviously referring to Senator Leila de Lima, and raised questions on the source of the senator’s campaign fund. De Lima has launched a Senate inquiry on President Duterte’s aggressive war on drugs that led to the killings of almost a thousand drug pushing suspects without due process. Paying his respects to Petty Officer 3 Darwin Espallardo of the Naval Intelligence Security Group, who was killed in an anti-drug operation and whose remains arrived at around 4 p.m. on Wednesday at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), Duterte said, “The drug problem, just like the Abu Sayyaf, must be crushed, destroyed. I don’t care how it is destroyed. It must be destroyed.” He described illegal drugs as a “pandemic,” saying, “This is really a war. We win some battles and lose in other skirmishes but definitely we are willing to win the war.” He added, “The government is not without resources, not without warm bodies fighting for this Republic in so many fronts. There is a new front that is deadly, one which is coming up. The one presently wreaking havoc in the lives of the people in this nation is drugs.” The President took exception to the United Nations’ pronouncement that it would consider a possible “genocide” case against President Duterte as his war on drugs has led to the killings of 1,000 suspected drug offenders. He said it was “a very stupid statement.” “You don’t come here and investigate the deaths of criminals and those suspected to have been killed by the police when after all we have also lost a sizable amount of our population …Why would you investigate (the killing of) criminals when in other parts of the world, there are killings of men, women and children, bombing of hospitals,” he said. Speaking about human rights, he began his tirade against the “immoral” senator whom he said has been in an affair with her married driver who has been hooked on illegal drugs. He further branded the “senator” as an “adulterer” and said that she was spending for her lover, including buying him a house and financing his drug habit. The President raised questions on where the senator funded her campaign, which won her a seat. Duterte said that he has decided to stop pulling his punches with De Lima, who had investigated Duterte’s alleged ties to the so-called Davao Death Squad when he was still mayor of Davao City. SFM

What the...! Now, cops question woman threatened over 'Dipa Karmakar tweets' In what is another shocking and obnoxious instance of social media platforms being used by miscreants, a woman was trolled for her tweets questioning Indian gymnast Dipa Karmakar's choice of a dangerous routine – the Produnova – to get an Olympic medal. Shockingly, the Jaipur woman's opinions on the social networking site, which she posted on August 14, led to her getting life threats and sexual abuses online. The woman was forced to seek the help of Union Minister Sushma Swaraj, who referred the complaint to Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje, following which a case was lodged by Rajasthan Police. A case against three Twitter handles of unknown persons was registered under 66 D (Punishment for cheating by personation by using computer resource) and 67 (Punishment for publishing or transmitting obscene material in electronic form) of the IT act, police said, adding they were trying to trace the accused. Indian gymnast Dipa Karmakar rests during a training session ahead of the 2016 Rio Olympics. Pic/ PTI Rajasthan police have now said that they were trying to trace the accused. The harassment reportedly began on Sunday when the perpetrators threatened her and even circulated her pictures online. "After receiving directions, I met the girl on the night of August 14 and spoke to her about the matter. She filed a complaint and the FIR was lodged on August 15 with Pratap Nagar Police Station," DCP East Kunwar Rastradeep said on Wednesday. "We are in the process of obtaining some IP addresses and are writing to Twitter seeking information about certain the handles. "Since their server is located out of the country, it will take some time for us to reach to the users who abused her," the officer said. "We are working on the case considering the gravity of the case. Since the servers are placed outside India, it is a bit of a time consuming process but we will get it done as early as possible," Mukesh Chaudhary, a cyber crime expert assisting the police, said. She thanked Sushma Swaraj for her prompt response. But what is more shocking is the fact that she was questioned by the police over the usage of the word 'damned' in her tweet. She tweeted about her experience, saying "I told them I hadn't used the word for India. So they . " But she had a valid question to ask from the authorities. She asked, "But my question is: what if I had used the word for India? What then? Is there no freedom of speech left in this country? " So she just added to the long list of things she cannot do in India, say the word 'damned'. And she got instant response from Twitterati regarding the need for "free spirits like her" in India. She dropped the mic, so to speak, on the whole topic with these tweets:

Sponsored article: India focused on improving ease of doing business index ranking India is currently ranked at number 130 on the ease of doing business index that is published by the World Bank. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has however initiated a process of economic transformation that is meant to improve India’s ranking to among the top 100 countries in the world in the next few years. In an effort to report on its improvement so far, the government of India is currently giving all the evidence it has to the World Bank in order to prove that there are positive changes happening on the ground. Government Giving Evidence of Improved business environment To make sure that all factors are considered and increase the chances of India being considered for a ranking improvement in the index to be published next, the government is not leaving any stone unturned. All information required is being sourced for and submitted to the World Bank officials who are conducting the survey in order to facilitate the next global ease of doing business ranking which is to be released in October 2016. Government officials from India said that data from the logs of construction permits, information about the movement of the containerized cargo at the ports and the improved process of setting up business in India and especially the cities of Mumbai and Delhi were made available to the World Bank analysts involved in the process. When carrying out the field inspection and verification process, the World Bank team had a specific focus on the Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion (DIPP) which is the government agency in India responsible for much of the data needed in assessing ease of doing business in India. In a meeting on 1st August with the Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion, the World Bank team raised a few concerns though on with the DIPP. One of their observations was that even after the government announcing and effecting changes that would move registration processes in government agencies from physical paper work to a digital platform, people were still seen carrying paperwork to the offices of the Employees' Provident Fund Organization. However, the DIPP clarified that it is only those individuals who needed to file physical papers for specific situations that were having paperwork at the Employees' Provident Fund Organization. In addition, the DIPP is collecting its own evidence in situations where it feels that the respondents did not keep in mind all the assumptions that were made by the World Bank. Automation or digitalization of processes in all government agencies focused on improving the local business environment in India is one of the key factors considered by the World Bank when ranking countries in the order of their ease of doing business. It is assumed that with digitized systems the processes of business registration and filling of returns is much faster, transparent and efficient for both the business and the government itself. Ease of Doing Business Index The ease of doing business index is published annually by the World Bank in order to rank countries based on a similar criteria on how efficient and effective they are in supporting business people to start and run businesses in their local economies. The business environment is made up of several factors and among the top factors considered in doing the rankings include: the processes and costs involved in issuing of construction permits to both the locals and foreigners, time taken to get a business registered and the associated costs, ease of accessing credit for young businesses and the tax filing processes. The more streamlined these processes are the higher a country is ranked in the index compared to other countries globally. The index is usually computed by benchmarking frontier scores for each country against a universal set of regulatory best practices. Focus areas for India For construction permits, parameters used in the ease of doing business index in India, only the warehouses and buildings that are owned domestically are considered; with the exclusion of the processes involved for foreign entities. The DIPP is also focused on improving time taken to start a business, insolvency procedures, ease of cross-border trade and connectivity to electricity as a way to improve in the overall ranking. The total number of days required to start a business has so far reduced from 29 days last year to about 12 days this year according to a report from the DIPP. 34 Chicken deaths spark bird flu scare in Odisha Kendrapara (Odisha) : En-masse death of over a thousand chickens at a poultry farm in a seaside village here triggered panic with the locals suspecting the death to be an outbreak of bird flu. However, veterinary experts who inspected the poultry farm in Kharinasi village allayed fears of flu and said the chickens died of coccidiosis disease not bird flu. "Around 1,100 birds including chicks died during the past one week. After the deaths were reported to us by the farm owner Bankim Majhi, we rushed to the poultry farm. After sounding an alert, the bodies of chickens were subjected to laboratory test at the district veterinary college here," Chief District Veterinary Officer (CDVO), Chaitanya Charan Sethy said. "Some of the samples were sent for test to the Animal Disease Research Institute near Bhubaneswar," he said. The untimely death of chickens in the farm had fuelled fears of bird flu among the locals. But preliminary tests conducted on the birds found dead have ruled out bird flu, Sethy said. Veterinarians, who conducted the initial examinations and post-mortem of the birds, said that the signs were consistent with coccidiosis disease. It is a parasitic disease of the intestinal tract of animals caused by coccidian protozoa. The disease spreads from one animal to another by contact with the infected tissue. However, the disease is not contagious and is not air- borne, he added. In no other poultry farm large-scale death of chickens has been reported. However as a precautionary measure, the department has sounded an alert and asked people not to touch the chickens dropping dead. We have requested the farm owners to inform the administration when they spot dead chickens, the official said. "We have constituted rapid response teams comprising livestock inspectors, village 'gomitras' and veterinary officers in the district and directed them to detect sick chickens. All poultry will be vaccinated shortly to prevent the spread of the animal disease," Sethi said. There were reports of distress sale of broiler chickens by poultry farm owners. Our officials are visiting the village, sensitising the poultry farm owners not to get panicked and resort to distress sale. We are conducting an awareness campaign for farmers regarding the need for vaccinations, the official added.

Ellen DeGeneres' Usain Bolt tweet deemed racist On Monday, the daytime talk show host's official Twitter account tweeted a doctored image of Ellen riding the back of the gold medalist. The photo is the now famous one of him smiling as he heads to winning the men's 100m race at the Olympics in Rio. The tweet's caption from Ellen reads "This is how I'm running errands from now on. " Some on Twitter found the image less than golden, with cries of racism and insensitivity in joking about a white woman riding the back of a black man. But others defended DeGeneres and pointed out that she and Bolt, who has appeared before on her show, are friends. One person tweeted, "If Usain was white, y'all wouldn't care. We all know Ellen isn't racist & didn't mean any harm by that. Stop it. " On Tuesday DeGeneres responded to the controversy by tweeting "I am highly aware of the racism that exists in our country. It is the furthest thing from who I am. " The Ellen Show initially followed the first tweet with one featuring a video of Bolt's appearance on the show where Bolt raced a then 8-year-old viral video star, Demarjay Smith. Like Bolt, Smith is Jamaican. The youngster acts as a personal trainer for other kids and told the talk show host he believed he could beat the champion in a race. "Heres something you don't see very often-@UsainBolt losing a race. This was 1 of my favorite moments from last season," Ellen's tweet said.

Europe's top Olympic official arrested in Rio over tickets sales Police in Brazil have arrested the head of the European Olympic Committees, Irishman Patrick Hickey, in Rio over illegal Olympic ticket sales. Mr Hickey, 71, is suspected of illegally passing on tickets for the Games to be sold on at extortionate prices, Brazilian media report. Mr Hickey was taken to hospital after his arrest. Police say the suspect, who also heads the Olympic Council of Ireland (OCI), tried to escape when they came for him. They say he slid his Olympic pass under the door when police came knocking and fled into the adjacent hotel room, where his son had been staying until recently. A spokesman for Ireland's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade told the BBC: "We are aware of an Irish citizen having been arrested in Rio. The department, through its consulate in Rio, is following up and stands ready to provide all appropriate consular assistance. " Sports minister Shane Ross, who is in Rio and who recently met Mr Hickey, tweeted simply: "Shell shock here in Rio. " Brazilian media believe Mr Hickey's arrest is related to that of fellow Irishman Kevin James Mallon on the day of the Olympic opening ceremony. The OCI said in a statement it was "aware of the media stories regarding Pat Hickey and we are seeking total clarity on the situation before we comment further". Mr Hickey is president of the European Olympic Committees, the body which gathers the continent's 50 national Olympic committees together. The Irishman was detained at his hotel near the Olympic park early on Wednesday morning. According to reports in the Irish press, his wife initially told police that he had left, only for him to be found in another hotel room. His passport and Olympic ID were seized and were later displayed to photographers at a police press conference. Mr Mallon is the director of THG Sports, a sports hospitality company alleged to have resold tickets for Rio 2016 illegally. When Mr Mallon was arrested on 5 August, he was found to be in possession of more than 800 top-class tickets for the Games. Police suspect they were to be sold at prices of up to £6,000 ($7,800) each. THG Sports said Mr Mallon had not sold or sought to sell tickets but had been holding them for collection by clients of the Irish authorised ticket reseller, Pro 10 Management. THG Sports is owned by Marcus Evans Group, which also owns Ipswich Town Football Club. Marcus Evans was one of four names on a list of arrest warrants issued by a Brazilian judge on Monday in connection with the alleged reselling of Rio 2016 tickets. None of those four people is thought to be in Brazil and police there have said they will pursue the matter with Interpol. The OCI said it would launch an inquiry into the ticket sale controversy but has been criticised for rejecting a call by the Irish sports minister to bring in independent investigators. Last week, the OCI wrote on its website there was "absolutely no suggestion of misconduct or impropriety" by the OCI or any of its staff. Mr Hickey was elected head of the European Olympic Committees in 2006 and has been in charge of the Olympic Council of Ireland since 1989. He has also been on the International Olympic Committee's executive board since 2012.

42 Eastern Europe wants countrymen back as emigrant tide hurts GDP — RT Business Countries such as Latvia, whose population has been falling since the early 1990s due to low birth rates, have seen hundreds of thousands of people emigrate. After Latvia joined the European Union in 2004, many people left the country to seek a better life in the bloc’s more prosperous states. Overall, the Baltic region has been hit most by the trend. Latvia and Lithuania have seen 0.6-0.9 percent of their GDP shaved off annually by emigration. According to the IMF, Eastern European migrants’ education levels tend to be higher than their home country averages. This has inspired a Latvian institute to launch the ‘I want you back’ campaign, inviting Latvians to tell their relatives and friends abroad they are welcome to return to the country. "The initiative concerns our relationships with our relatives, friends and people close to us that are abroad, and [aims to] tell them clearly and directly – ‘I want you back,’” the initiative’s leader, Aiva Rozenberga, told national radio. Latvian residents are being encouraged to use the hashtag #GribuTeviAtpakaļ (“I want you back” in Latvian) on Twitter and other social networks. “The diaspora living abroad represent a huge untapped potential for their countries of origin,” Lithuania-based economist Rokas Grajauskas, working for Danske Bank, told Bloomberg.

Olympic pole vault penis claim denied by Japan athlete Hiroki Ogita Japanese pole vaulter Hiroki Ogita has described his bewilderment after reports his penis had prevented him from progressing in the Rio Olympics went viral. A video of the athlete hitting the bar with what looked to some like his penis under his shorts quickly spread online. His leg had already made contact with the bar but his arm finished the job. "I never expected the foreign media to take me down like this," the 28-year-old athlete tweeted. "It's one thing if it was true, but I have to say I'm pretty devastated that they'd go so far to make something up to mock and ridicule me so much. " One pole vaulting expert told the BBC he thought it was a case of an unfortunate camera angle. "He had already pressed on the crossbar so much," pole vaulting coach David Yeo said in Singapore. "The crossbar was bound to dislodge. I think it was just the crumpling of the fabric which happened at the wrong position. " Mr Ogita did clear the bar on his second attempt but as he only managed a height of 5.45m on his final jump, the earlier foul cost him. He finished too far down the field to progress through the qualifying stage. But his fans rallied round him online, telling him to not to worry and reassuring him that the coverage was not all hostile. Twitter user @wotarou0019kota tweeted (in Japanese): "Don't stress over it and be positive! I do athletics as well, and sometimes stuff happens. It's awesome enough that you're able to be up there on the world stage, so hold your head up high and keep on jumping! " Despite the athlete's dismay, he encouraged his readers to take an active interest in the sport. "To be honest, it's pretty rough, but I guess I'm in the spotlight so this might be some kind of opportunity. I'll do my best and get the results so that I get the last laugh," he wrote. "It doesn't matter if you do it for a joke or whatever, I ask you to go and watch an actual game at a stadium for once. I hope you appreciate, even a bit, what a great sport pole vaulting is. " He eventually tweeted that he was able to see the funny side: "Watching again, this is pretty funny, if I say so myself. LOL. "

Russia attacks: 'Militants' killed in St Petersburg and Moscow A special forces raid in St Petersburg and an attack by gunmen near Moscow have left at least six suspected militants dead, officials say. Four were killed at a block of flats in St Petersburg, as special forces searched for North Caucasus militants. Later, two gunmen suspected to be from the North Caucasus injured two traffic police officers east of Moscow before being killed by security forces. Russia has been battling a long and bitter insurgency in the region. Russia's FSB security service said the St Petersburg raid had been aimed at detaining "wanted persons accused of participating in illegal armed groups in the North Caucasus". It added: "Criminals were destroyed by return fire when they attempted to resist. " Reports said a number of arrests had also been made at the block of flats. Images showed balaclava-clad officers surrounding the block on the outskirts of the city. In the later incident, two gunmen attacked traffic police on the Shchelkovskoye highway in Balashikha, 20km (12 miles) east of Moscow. Police were investigating whether the men were from the North Caucasus. A spokesman for the Russian Investigative Committee told the Tass news agency: "Two policemen were wounded in the attack. One of them is in a serious condition. "The attackers had firearms and axes. One of them was shot dead by the police during the attack and the other was killed when he was resisting arrest. " A police source told Tass one of the traffic police officers had died but this has not been confirmed. Security operations against militants are common in the North Caucasus region itself but are rarer in major cities outside. The insurgency in North Caucasus followed two bitter separatist conflicts in Russia's Chechnya republic and has occasionally spilled over into violence in other parts of Russia.

Burkini beach row puts French values to test This is a controversy France could have done without. Burkini or bikini, French commentators have asked, ironically, about this summer's choice of beachwear. It is no coincidence that the ban on Islamic burkinis - full- body swimsuits - should arise from French Riviera beaches, a few kilometres from Nice, a city struck by a militant Islamist attack that killed 85 people on Bastille Day, just a month ago. The town of Cannes was the first to pass the summer ban, which was confirmed by the courts on 13 August. And Cannes was soon followed by the towns of Villeneuve-Loubet, near Nice, and Sisco in Corsica. Even the mayor of the northern seaside resort of Le Touquet is said to be about to pass a similar ban: no burkini will be tolerated on public beaches. So far a small number of women have been fined (€38 in Cannes - £33; $43) for wearing a burkini on the beach at Cannes. And the mayor's decision has triggered a heated debate. Cannes mayor David Lisnard has tried to explain his decision in these terms: "The burkini is like a uniform, a symbol of Islamist extremism. This is why I am banning it for the summer. " His view surprised the Cannes Muslim community, as David Lisnard is known locally for having allowed a large plot of land in his city to be used to build the Iqraa mosque, financed by a Saudi donor. "I am a practising Muslim, and I believe there should be a choice," said Sabrina Akram, who grew up in Pakistan, and now lives in the US state of Massachusetts. "I think it's outrageous that you would effectively be asked to uncover some flesh or leave," said Maryam Ouiles from Gloucester. Read more here: Muslim women on the burkini bans Why French beaches are banning burkinis Nice ban upheld by court Corsica mayor bans burkinis A French anti-Islamophobia association, CCIF, decided to challenge the Cannes mayor's decision in court but lost the case. According to the administrative court which authorised the ban, it falls within the remit of the 2004 law restricting religious signs in public spaces. The court explained its decision: "In the context of a state of emergency and after recent Islamist attacks in France, the conspicuous display of religious signs, in this instance in the shape beachwear, is susceptible to create or increase tensions and risk affecting public order. " In other words, the court asserts that a burkini may not be seen simply as an innocent religious symbol, but as a militant and proselytising form of radical Islam. Like many of his colleagues and a majority of the French people, Jean- Christophe Ploquin, columnist at Catholic daily La Croix, disagrees. "In France, everybody is free to dress the way they like as long as they abide by the law. Everybody should therefore be free to wear a burkini," he argues. "This, however, doesn't mean we should be naive. The burkini offers a separatist vision of society and applies pressure on other women in the Muslim community. " In fact, the burkini challenges two fundamental French values and traditions: women's emancipation and a desire to live together as one nation. The country that gave the bikini to the world, following on a long tradition of influential women - from philosopher Madame du Chatelet, friend of Voltaire, to Coco Chanel, by way of Simone de Beauvoir, author of the ground-breaking female study The Second Sex - is shocked to see that some French women accept what it sees as the diktat of religion and of men on them. Why the bikini became a fashion classic The burkini also deeply challenges the notion of national unity, which is at the heart of the French narrative. The burkini is seen as a symbol of separatism and, for some, to allow it is to undermine the very idea of France. The burkini controversy will probably slowly disappear as August draws to a close. It is nonetheless revealing of France's deeply troubled state of mind, one which is going to linger on for some years to come. Agnes Poirier is UK editor for French weekly Marianne

Egypt state TV orders female hosts to lose weight Egypt's state broadcaster has suspended eight of its female TV presenters and told them to go on a diet, sparking uproar among women's rights groups. The Egyptian Radio and Television Union (ERTU) has given the women one month to slim down before they can appear on air again with an "appropriate appearance", the Al-Yawm al- Sabi website reports. The ERTU has a female director, Safaa Hegazy, a former state TV anchor herself. The announcement prompted an outcry among the affected presenters. Khadija Khattab, a host on Egypt's Channel 2, told the paper that she wants people to watch her most recent TV appearances and judge for themselves if she is really "fat", and whether she deserves to be prevented from working. Another presenter said the situation had upset their families and should have been dealt with internally. The Women's Centre for Guidance and Legal Awareness condemned the move , saying it "violates the constitution" and is a form of violence against women. It's called on the ERTU to backtrack. Despite the criticism, ERTU sources told the Veto news website that the decision won't be reversed, but that the women won't have their pay and benefits docked. Egyptian media commentators are debating whether the suspensions were justified. At the state-owned Al-Ahram daily, journalist Fatma al-Sharawi says she thinks the policy should be applied across local TV stations. But author and academic Waheed Abdul Majid thinks the channel should focus on improving its content rather than the appearance of the presenters. On social media, some users voiced support for the women, but others called them "bakabouzas", a term Egyptians use to describe overweight girls. One female Twitter user described ERTU head Safaa Hegazy as a "strong woman" for making the decision. The presenters have been defended in parliament, though, with male MP and journalist Sayyid Hegazy asking: "Who is an ideal weight in Egypt? " He told the Sada al-Balad news site that a presenter "might be a little overweight, but she is eloquent". 47 Rio Olympics 2016: German twins' hand-hold divides nation A betrayal or celebration of sporting ideals? German twins crossed the finish line in Rio smiling and holding hands, and have divided their home nation. Anna and Lisa Hahner came 81st and 82nd in Sunday's women's marathon. They were accused of trivialising the Games by a senior German athletics official but there was some sympathy for them on social media. The women themselves admit any publicity is welcome, as they receive no public funding. The Hahners defended their performance in a Facebook post (in German) on Monday, saying they had done their best. "Definitely not what we had hoped for.... Nevertheless, one of our greatest sporting moments. For this we had trained to our limit and sometimes beyond. " However, their performance was more than 21 minutes behind the winning time and 15 minutes short of their personal bests. In an email to , Anna insisted that they crossed the finish line together by chance, calling it a "magical moment". They have defended their self-promotion, saying they receive "zero euros funding" from the German Athletics Association. But their conduct was heavily criticised by German officials. "It looked as though they completed a fun run and not [an] Olympic [race]," German Athletics Federation director Thomas Kurschilgen told reporters. He argued that it was "disrespectful and a slap in the face to all the other athletes in the German team". Public relations should not come before the interest of the national team, he argued. Newspaper columnists joined in the fray. "If the Hahners want to cross the finish line together, beaming and holding hands, then they can do that all they like - in a local fun run in St Polten or the Miss Plaits run in Solingen", jeered Lars Wallrodt, a columnist at daily national newspaper Die Welt (in German) . And the twins would be the first to admit they are big on PR, devoting a YouTube channel to themselves. In particular, the identical twins have been reprimanded for stealing the spotlight from the other German in the race, Anja Scherl, who finished in 44th place. However, some observers have defended the pair. "It all seems rather over the top," commented sports website Le Buzz. "Who knows what their repercussions will be in the long run, but are moments like this not what the Olympics are about? "If you cannot achieve Olympic glory, why not lose in style, we say. " A (non-scientific) online poll by Germany's Sport1 website (in German) found participants roughly divided over their response to the hand-hold. The twins also attracted some support on social media. Meanwhile, other onlookers have noted that these were not the only twins to finish together in Sunday's race - North Korea's Kim Hye-song and Kim Hye-gyong finished 10th and 11th. And Estonia had triplets taking part. Leila, Lily and Liina Luik did not finish together but two of them were behind the Hahners and one failed to reach the line.

Kenya bans night weddings in Mombasa after robberies Night weddings have been banned in Kenya's coastal region of Mombasa as the authorities say they have become a target for criminals. The county's commissioner said the decision was taken after an increase in attacks by knife-wielding gangs. Wedding ceremonies in Mombasa can last for as long as five days and include parties that go on late into the night. The ban came into effect immediately and celebrations had to end by 22:00 local time, the commissioner said. Families who wanted a wedding to continue after this time would have to get police clearance and pay a fee for armed officers, County Commissioner Maalim Mohamed said. The move comes after a group of women were attacked and their valuables were stolen after they left a night-time wedding, Kenya's Citizen newspaper reports . The BBC's Ferdinand Omondi in Mombasa says police have recently been carrying out security operations and several suspected gangsters have been shot dead. A critic of the directive called it "archaic". "The government cannot ban night weddings, which are cultural in this region," Julius Ogogoh, who heads the non-governmental organisation Commission for Human Rights and Justice, told the Daily Nation newspaper . "Instead, security agencies must deal with the gangs. We are in the 21st Century and such orders are archaic. "

Freed Nigeria Chibok schoolgirl 'misses militant husband' The first Nigerian schoolgirl from Chibok to be rescued from Boko Haram says she misses the father of her baby, a suspected Islamist militant. In her first interview since being found with her baby in May, Amina Ali Nkeki told Reuters she also wanted to go home to Chibok, a town in the north. She and her child are being held in the capital, Abuja, for what the government calls a restoration process. More than 200 girls were kidnapped from a school in Chibok in April 2014. The abduction led to the #BringBackOurGirls campaign, that was supported by US First Lady Michelle Obama and Pakistani activist Malala Yousafzai. The Boko Haram group has waged a violent insurgency for several years in north-eastern Nigeria in its quest for Islamic rule. Ms Nkeki was found three months ago by a vigilante group in a forest with suspected militant Mohammed Hayatu, who identified himself as her husband, and their child of four months. The 21-year-old said she was unhappy about being separated from Mr Hayatu, who was arrested after they were found. "I want him to know that I am still thinking about him," she told Reuters. "Just because we got separated, that does not mean that I don't think about him. " During the interview she only lifted her gaze from the floor once to breastfeed her daughter when the baby was brought into the room, Reuters reports. "I just want to go home - I don't know about school," she said. "I will decide about school when I get back. " Her mother, Binta Ali, told the BBC Hausa service earlier this week that her daughter wanted the government to give her a sewing machine so she could become a seamstress. She said the man claiming to be her daughter's husband had said he was a mechanic from the town of Mubi before he was captured by Boko Haram - and that he had organised their escape. Earlier her brother had told the BBC that because of an increase in air strikes Mr Hayatu was no longer willing to continue fighting and they had planned to leave together . Ms Nkeki said she had not watched the video, released by Boko Haram on Sunday, which apparently shows recent footage of some the other missing Chibok girls. "I think about them a lot - I would tell them to be hopeful and prayerful," she said. "In the same way God rescued me, he will also rescue them. 50 North Korea resumes plutonium production North Korea has confirmed it has restarted plutonium production at its Yongbyon nuclear reactor facility after reports of increased activity. The agency running Yongbyon was quoted by Japan's Kyodo News Agency as saying nuclear tests would continue as long as the US posed a threat. The North restarted Yongbyon in June, UN inspectors confirmed. The country has conducted four nuclear weapons tests and several missile tests breaching international sanctions. The Atomic Energy Institute, which controls Yongbyon, said in a written interview with Kyodo: "We have reprocessed spent nuclear fuel rods removed from a graphite-moderated reactor". The institute also told Kyodo that North Korea was producing highly enriched uranium, an essential component in nuclear power and weapons. The amount of plutonium and enriched uranium in North Korea is unknown. "Under conditions that the United States constantly threatens us with nuclear weapons, we will not discontinue nuclear tests," the institute said. International experts noticed activity at the site in recent months from satellite imagery. The nuclear reactor at Yongbyon had been shut down in 2007. UN monitors from the International Atomic Energy Agency have had no access to North Korea since being thrown out in 2009, so they rely largely on satellite data. At North Korea's most recent ruling party congress, leader Kim Jong-un reinforced his policy of economic development coupled with a strong nuclear programme. The US recently agreed to install an anti-missile system in South Korea that will be deployed solely to counter the threat from Pyongyang.

Will Britain & France finally intervene to support children living alone in Calais ‘Jungle’? — RT UK Councilors from the Local Government Association (LGA), which represents most local authorities in England and Wales, will visit the Calais camp on Thursday to meet with the city’s mayor, Natacha Bouchart. The LGA said its aim is to share expertise between the two countries on how to keep children safe and ensure they receive adequate care. The move has been praised by Anne Longfield, the children’s commissioner for England. “I welcome this renewed LGA commitment to ensure councils across England take responsibility for supporting these vulnerable children and young people, who have been through terrible ordeals,” Longfield said, as quoted by the Press Association. “During my visit to the Calais camp I was made aware of a large number of unaccompanied children who may be entitled to come to the UK because they have a close relative here. The French authorities need to process these applications with the utmost urgency so that families can be reunited and children can be taken out of the camp to safety,” she continued. According to figures released by the charity Help Refugees in July, 608 of the 751 children living in the ‘Jungle’ camp are unaccompanied. If those children are unable to be relocated with family in Europe or the UK, they will “require care and support packages directly from councils or their partners,” said David Simmons, chairman of the LGA’s Asylum, Refugee and Migration Task Group. “If children do come to the UK, councils want to get it right so that children who have experienced horrendous conditions within and since fleeing their country of origin are able to settle into UK life as quickly and easily as possible with ongoing support made available when they need it,” he added. Under a scheme announced in May, the British government said unaccompanied child refugees registered in France, Italy or Greece before March 20 could be resettled in the UK. It came after ministers faced pressure to accept 3,000 child refugees from Europe. However, then-Prime Minister David Cameron said actual numbers would depend on what local councils could successfully handle. More than 9,100 people are currently living in squalid conditions at the Calais camp, desperately hoping to cross the English Channel into the UK after having had their applications rejected elsewhere, or in expectation of better prospects in Britain than in the rest of Europe.

Economic damage from civil war costs Yemen $14bn “The conflict has so far resulted in damage costs (still partial and incomplete) of almost $7 billion and economic losses (in nominal terms) of over $7.3 billion in relation to production and service delivery," said the report dated May 6. The civil war in Yemen intensified in 2015, as the Saudi-led coalition launched its air campaign at request of Yemeni President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi’s government, which was engaged in a clash against the Shiite Houthi movement. Yemen’s recognized government is also fighting Al-Qaeda militants. “These preliminary findings are not only partial, but also evolving,” as the conflict goes on, the report said. The assessment was made between late last year and early 2016. The public health service has suffered losses of $3.6 billion. The report was able to collect damage data only in the cities of Sanaa, Aden, Taiz and Zinjibar. The investigation was cut off last October, about seven months after the conflict began. It will also cost Yemen $139 million to reconstruct damaged energy facilities in the four cities, mostly for the restoration of destroyed power plants, the report said. READ MORE: 'Unprecedented': European govts sold $1.3bn in arms to Middle East, some ended up with ISIS - report As Shiite rebels control the central bank in the capital, Sanaa, which provides foreign exchange for imports, it’s tough to restore import financing for food and fuel. The bank has rejected allegations that it’s misusing state funds. “As long as the conflict is ongoing, it's key to keep going the basic imports needed to avoid a humanitarian crisis. That is a very critical issue right now. The best the international community and donors can do is to find a way to get the government and the central bank to cooperate to get at least the humanitarian side of things going,” the IMF's Yemen Mission Chief Albert Jaeger told Reuters. The 16-month conflict in Yemen has seen more than 6,500 people killed, and displaced more than 2.5 million. The pre-conflict GDP per capita was $1,097.

West Ham sponsor Betway apologises for tweet criticising Michail Antonio West Ham United 's official shirt sponsor, Betway , has apologised for criticising Michail Antonio on social media during the club’s Premier League season opener. The betting firm posted a scathing comment on the midfielder’s performance in defence as the team lost 2-1 to Chelsea on Monday night (15 August) with Antonio giving away a penalty in the process. Sponsors are increasingly experimenting with new ways to engage with fans across social in an effort to be seen aligning their own interests with those of the fans. However Betway’s efforts failed to strike a chord with the club, which was understood to have been upset with the criticism. Following the post, West Ham and Betway held a conference call the following day to discuss the tweet. The betting firm has since apologised for the comment, telling Sky Sports News that, while they have a team of passionate writers who provide impartial opinion across all sports, the tweet regarding Antonio was “inappropriate in light of the company's relationship with West Ham”. Misha Sher, Head of Sport and Entertainment at MediaCom, highlighted the importance for brands to “be authentic and connect with the fans” but warned that they should “never publicly criticize or question decisions of the manager”. “There is nothing to be gained from this other than potentially alienating the club and its fans. Fans want to know that brands associated with the football club are behind the team 100%, unless the brand’s image is in some way compromised by the behaviour of a player. It was good to see Betway quickly resolve this with an apology, avoiding any further undue publicity. Betway agreed a £20m three year shirt sponsorship deal with West Ham in February last year and has built on this with its Academy of Football series which aims to deliver value beyond awareness by offering fans a unique insight into their club.

Publicis’ LiquidThread president Olivier Gers hired as IAAF CEO to ‘build its fan base and re-establish trust’ The International Association of Athletics Federations ( IAAF ) has appointed Olivier Gers , the UK-based global president of LiquidThread , a division of Publicis Media Group, as its new chief executive. He joins after a six-month hunt for a replacement during which interim chief Jean Gracia helped oversee a restructure of the IAAF. It claims he came top of a shortlist of 200 candidates, with his 20 years in commercial marketing a large incentive for the hire. Sebastian Coe remains the president of the body, a role he took up in September 2015, despite numerous controversies around his former ambassadorial role with Nike and doping in the sport . On the hire, Coe said: “The IAAF is on a mission to change. We looked for a CEO with the energy, passion and experience to lead the organisation and, together with the Council and the Congress, drive the sport to be the best that it can be. Olivier’s experience in leading global teams, working with world-class brands and businesses and developing and creating digital products and platforms is exactly what we need.” Gers, speaking during the Rio Olympics, said: “Sport is the purest expression of human possibility and all sport is anchored in the disciplines of athletics. The IAAF is at a challenging and exciting junction. It is a multi- million dollar business that needs to stay relevant, build its fan base and re- establish trust. Sitting at the heart of the sport are the athletes and their remarkable achievements. Bringing the global athletes and their fans closer together through technology is the ultimate goal to driving the business of athletics forward and I believe my commercial, marketing and digital experience will help to achieve this.” He will fully start his new role 1 October 2016.

What's next for Mondelez as its chief media officer Bonin Bough hunts a brighter spotlight? Mondelez’s chief media and e-commerce officer has left the company following a near-four year stint. He’s set to spend time outside of the industry, having been plucked by CNBC executives to front a new TV show in Cleveland – a fitting move for a marketer Fast Company once described “as much a celebrity as any of the headliners at the festivals he sponsors.” Bough's reputation as a visionary thinker was firmly established during his four years at Pepsico where he was digital and social media director. It was during this time that he was poached by Dana Anderson, senior vice president and chief marketing officer. And unlike his peers at other FMCG companies, he was very much brought in as a disrupter, a remit that saw him spend just as much time with start-ups and the likes of Facebook and Twitter as he did traditional media agencies. It was this flip of priorities that helped show investors and the market that Mondelez could be a forward- thinking business in the media aftermath of its separation from Kraft. And while it has struggled for consistent growth in the interceding years, Bough has successfully pushed the brand to the front of the queue at companies like Facebook and Twitter when it comes to new ad products, while at the same time encouraged its marketers to consider wider behavioural shifts like what it means to manage ‘mobile-first’ brands. If a traditional media officer is focused on managing agencies, then Bough was much more concerned with three broader areas; to help Mondelez be the best possible media client; to ensure his team identify the best media partners; and to ensure that media is accountable and delivering business growth. The third task is the one that appeared to become of increasing importance to Bough as evidenced by his decision to take on e-commerce responsibilities last year and his frequent talks on why it was important for Mondelez’s marketing to be self-sustainable with content that not only sells its products but also makes money. It’s a pertinent issue for many big advertisers, who are all too aware of the need to wrestle back control of some of their media from agencies in the wake of the ANA’s investigation. That’s led to a push to bring about new ways of working internally, revised contracts and more transparency of the media relationship at these businesses, all of which Mondelez will be mindful of as it considers Bough’s successor. But that successor has yet to be named, with Mondelez not commenting further to The Drum beyond a statement that had been released. During his tenure, Bough has kept a tight team, personally hiring the likes of Laura Henderson to head up the media monetization plan he devised. His desire for Mondelez to act more like a media owner - and create content that is good enough to actually sell - has been bought into at the highest level at the company and now stands as a cornerstone in its revenue generation plans for the next two years. Although still in its infancy a substantial amount of capital has been poured into the division to get it off the ground and so whoever takes the reins will have the pressure to make sure it succeeds. Mondelez has a long history of promoting from within, and so Henderson is arguably in one of the strongest positions to maintain this trajectory. Despite being just over a year into the newly created remit she has already made good on some of the key objectives laid out by Bough. Cynthia Chen has also worked closely with Bough, most recently as global head of e-commerce and ventures, taking an active role in working with start-ups, while Mondelez’s media director for Europe Gerry D’Angelo has been driving Bough’s vision outside of the US.

Pinterest gets serious about video as it unveils new ad format with General Mills, bareMinerals and Kate Spade as launch partners In its ongoing quest to woo advertisers, Pinterest has revealed a ‘Promoted Video’ product for brands. The new ads will let companies share video content with the platform's 100 million users. The mobile-online tool will boost the visual bookmarking site’s ‘Promoted Pins’ and e-commerce offerings, and is currently being tested in the UK and US. The format will comprise of silent GIF-style ads that users have to click-to- play upon seeing them in their Pinterest feed. The platform, which allows users to curate and share images via an online scrapbook of ‘Pins’ has said that 75 per cent of all content consumed within its walls comes from businesses – so it’s no surprise that the US-based firm wants to double down on video advertising. Pinterest’s first ad format, Promoted Pins, launched in the US in 2015 and landed in the UK earlier this year. Promoted Videos will work in a similar way but rather than simply displaying images of products, the Pins will instead showcase mini-films through the site’s native video player. Pinterest users will be able to discover videos from brands that match their interests, be it fashion, cooking or interior design but unlike other platforms the Promoted Video experience will also allow customers to take action on what Pinterest has described as “one seamless experience”. This is down to the fact that featured Pins from brands will appear alongside the video ads; these will display any products used or shown in the film and in the US Pinners will be able to click on the Pins to buy products – all without leaving the site. So, for example a makeup artist watching a bareMinerals ad for concealer in the US could be served a ‘Buyable Pin’ beside the video inviting them to purchase the product, or a set of featured Pins that would display all the items used in the ad. Alternatively, related products or tutorials could be served up to the user. Pinners can also ‘save’ video ads to their scrapbooks so they can return to watch them if they are on the go, something Pinterest claimed further sets it apart from other social platforms – ie Facebook or Instagram. Designed to be purchased as premium, reserved inventory, Promoted Videos will initially be available to an exclusive set of managed brand partners in the US and the UK. Advertisers like General Mills, bareMinerals and luxury brand Kate Spade will be trialling the offering stateside, while UK collaborators have yet to be announced. Pinterest boasts 100 million users globally, and in terms of native video said that users are saving 60 per cent more native videos on the site than they were in 2015. The company has been testing the new feature out for some time with General Mills, and said that the early results look “promising”. According to a Millward Brown study, General Mills’ Old El Paso found that Pinterest Promoted Video drove “significant brand lift metrics”, with users finding them four-times more memorable than a non-video ad. “We’ve run several campaigns with Pinterest and consider video a natural evolution on how we want to connect with our Pinterest audience,” said Meredith Schaffner, Old El Paso’s marketing manager, adding that the brand’s customers were coming to Pinterest with “high intent and the ability to show a recipe and our products through video is a unique opportunity to drive higher performance.” Pinterest been doubling down on its advertising model lately, particularly in the UK , and its latest move will help bolster its positioning as a search engine which can track the entire customer journey, from inspiration right through to the point of purchase. Adele Cooper, the UK and Ireland country manager for Pinterest said: " Millions of people come to Pinterest everyday to discover ideas relevant to their interests and 67 per cent say videos on Pinterest inspire them to take action. "We’re looking forward to providing this new experience as a benefit for both people on Pinterest and for brands. "

The Drum interviews Sir Steve Redgrave live in Rio with Samsung’s virtual reality The Drum was transported to Rio de Janeiro earlier this week for a press conference with Olympic legend Sir Steve Redgrave, but not by plane. We were invited to M&C Saatchi’s office in London and presented with Samsung Gear VR headsets in order to interview Redgrave in real time. The 360 VR made it seem as if we were sat directly in front of the retired athlete at British House in Rio, while he watched us on a screen that broadcast a stream of the room in Soho. It was the third in a series of VR-led interviews hosted by Samsung as part of its Step Into Rio campaign. last weekend sessions were conducted with rower Helen Glover and cyclist Bradley Wiggins, both of whom also feature in the tech brand’s School of Rio campaign fronted by Jack Whitehall. The brand has hailed the experiences as the world’s first live VR press conferences, combining live streaming with the immersive aspect of virtual reality (we could turn our heads and look around the room in Rio while carrying on the chat). The conversational element is a new approach to VR: Samsung stated in a release that ‘all 360 live video streaming to date has been based around the consumption of content, rather than a two-way interaction.’ More members of London’s press will be offered the chance to jump 5,761 miles and talk to Olympic hopefuls throughout the week. The year of VR The experience forms just one part of Samsung’s VR push this year. Last week (12 August) saw the brand release a 360 tour of British House on the Oculus Store, Facebook and YouTube, while its large scale Hypercube experience with Biffy Clyro launched at Boardmasters festival in Cornwall last weekend. Samsung also went to town on pushing its Gear VR headset experiences to the creative industries at Cannes Lions in June, with a pop-up interactive space and a town-wide, colourful OOH campaign. “This has been the year of VR for us,” James Coyle, senior PR manager at Samsung, told The Drum. “We launched our S7 device at Mobile World Congress with Mark Zuckerberg with the VR headsets on, we’re using it as part of our Olympic campaign here in the UK and across the world, and we’re driving the market. “We’re trying to find ways of producing content that people want to engage with. I think that’s our challenge; to keep coming up with new, exciting and different ways of using VR content so more people can experience it.” As for our interview with Sir Steve, we decided to park questions about his relationship with John Inverdale and ask him whether he thinks was right to call Team GB a brand. He said: “To move on as a sport you need to have sponsorship, you need to have advertising and you need to have a brand. The British Olympic Association is a hugely successful organization and Team GB is part of that. As a marketing tool, it’s so important.”

Twitter moves into broadcaster territory as it pushes live TV shows on Periscope Twitter is attempting to position itself as the go-to social broadcaster, launching live shows such as Pint and Periscope to illustrate to brands the creative potential of its livestreaming arm. Pint and Periscope is a monthly series that will see Twitter staff conduct a live interview with a member of the creative agency community. The idea is educate people on the potential of Periscope both as a brand building platform and a revenue driver, while the platform is still in its experimentation phase. The first interviewee David Levin, creative director of agency That Lot, said: “People are still only scratching the surface in terms of the ways we can use Periscope. “Periscope is a great way to reach lots of people, including creatives, because by its nature it is live and it is on social which presents a huge opportunity for creativity but also just to try something different.” Periscope’s advantage in this space over its competitors, is it promotes interactivity by design. Twitter users can ask questions and comment on live stream, which is displayed in a live feed within the stream itself. This first came to a head at the Drummond Puddle Watch earlier this year , when a Newcastle-based marketing agency live-streamed footage of people trying to cross a puddle, leading to a string of brands tapping into the conversation to promote their products , and has been growing in popularity with brands ever since. Twitter UK’s head of creative agency development Helen Lawrence told The Drum the future of the live streaming arm lies in Periscope TV shows, in fiction “a bit like a play when you have live actors” and sports streaming, where the social media company has been making big bets in broadcasting rights. “For me there is something really interesting creatively in that and I’m sure a few brands are going to start tapping into that,” she said. Lawrence also cited citizen journalism as a growth area for Periscope, since “Twitter has always been the place people go to for breaking news”. It was on Twitter where citizen journalism first took off, with live adding a new dimension to the democratisation of media. For the full interview with David Levin and Helen Lawrence, plus some behind-the-scenes footage of the first Pint and Periscope, check out the video above.

Trump Shakes Up Campaign, Hires Steve Bannon With his poll numbers across the country sinking, Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump is shaking up his campaign by installing the top executive of the conservative populist website Breitbart News as CEO of his campaign. On Wednesday, Trump announced he has named Steve Bannon of Breitbart News as the campaign’s chief executive officer. By joining the Trump campaign, Bannon will temporarily step down from leading the pro- Trump Breitbart, according to the campaign. The new position is “designed to bolster the business-like approach of Mr. Trump’s campaign.” Trump also named pollster Kellyanne Conway as campaign manager. The person who had been running the campaign, Paul Manafort, will remain as campaign chairman and chief strategist, the Trump campaign said. “I am committed to doing whatever it takes to win this election, and ultimately become President because our country cannot afford four more years of the failed Obama-Clinton policies which have endangered our financial and physical security,” Trump said in a statement. As some in the GOP have expressed hope Trump would moderate his tone heading into the general election, the hiring of Bannon signals Trump is not going to water-down his conservative populist message that helped him win the GOP primary. In a statement, Manafort said: “It is imperative we continue to expand our team with top-tier talent. Steve and Kellyanne are respected professionals who believe in Mr. Trump and his message and will undoubtedly help take the campaign to new levels of success.” This isn’t Trump’s first campaign shakeup: in June, he fired campaign manager Corey Lewandowski. 69 Olympians Face Tax Burden On Top Of Physical Sacrifice The United States Olympic Committee awards Olympians cash prizes for the medals they win at the Olympic games, opening them up to IRS taxes. The payout per medal is as follows : Gold receives $25,000, Silver receives $15,000, and Bronze receives $10,000. Bonuses were first introduced into the Olympic games in 1994, and have since become an incentive package for Americans to bring home more medals and glory for the U. S. on the world stage. Just like rest of Americans earning a paycheck, Olympians are also taxed for these earnings. Michael Phelps, who won 5 golds and silver at the 2016 Rio Olympics, earned some $140,000 in cash. His tax payout amounts to $55,000 dollars, reports USA Today. Just as the payout is different for the three medals, so too are the taxes on each medal. Gold medals are taxed at rate of 39.6 percent, which amounts to $9,900. Silver medals medals are taxed to the tune of $5,940 and Bronze are taxed at $3,960, according to Americans for Tax Reform. Politicians have made many efforts over the past decade to stop the IRS from taxing Olympians but many of the first attempts failed. Sen. Marco Rubio introduced a bill (The Olympic Tax Elimination Act) in August of 2012 and his efforts were followed by then Republican presidential nominee Gov. Mitt Romney. Both attempts failed to garner enough support to pass. The Senate passed a bill (S.2650-United States Appreciation for Olympians and Paralympians) in March, 2016, to stop the IRS from taxing Olympic earnings. A similar bill (H. R.2628-TEAM Act) was introduced into the House by Congressman Blake Farenthold (R-Texas) but has yet to come to a vote. 72 'Most' BBC weather presenters to keep jobs after MeteoGroup wins contract Some weather presenters look set to lose their jobs as MeteoGroup is named as the company to replace the Met Office as the BBC's weather forecaster. In an online blog , the project director for BBC Weather procurement, Nigel Charters, said the "vast majority" of presenters would be kept on. The Met Office confirmed it had lost its BBC weather forecasting contract in August last year. MeteoGroup will take over in the spring of 2017. "MeteoGroup is honoured to have been chosen to partner with the world's leading broadcaster," its chairman Richard Sadler said. "The BBC is dedicated to offering the best possible weather service to its audience and it has been a demanding selection process. " In Mr Charters' blog he said he was "extremely pleased" about the announcement, and that it would save the corporation "millions of pounds". "We have taken forward the strongest bid based on best possible service and value for money for the licence fee payer. "These services will hit your screens, from mobile to television, in spring next year. And at a time when we need to make big savings across the BBC, it will also save us millions of pounds over the next seven or so years. "Some things won't change, though. We know how fond people are of our weather presenters. We have taken steps so the vast majority of our well- known and much-loved presenters will continue to front BBC Weather. " The BBC weather app, which has seen more than 15 million downloads, will also be upgraded, Mr Charters said. The Met Office had provided the data used for BBC forecasts since the corporation's first radio weather bulletin on 14 November 1922. The BBC said last August that it was legally required to secure the best value for money for licence fee payers and would tender the contract to outside competition. MeteoGroup, which already provides weather services to Sky and Channel 4, is the UK's largest private sector weather business, with offices in 17 countries around the world. It started out as MeteoConsult in the Netherlands in 1986 as the first major European weather business in the private sector, and its London headquarters were established in 2005.

Iranian Refugee Living In Maine Killed Fighting For ISIS Court documents show that an Iranian man who arrived in Maine as a refugee in 2009 was killed in Lebanon last year fighting for the Islamic State, the Portland Press Herald reported. According to The Associated Press , Adnan Fazeli, a 38-year-old who was a resident of Freeport, reportedly became radicalized while living in the United States. The FBI first investigated Fazeli after he left his Portland auto dealership job and flew to Turkey in August 2013, but he never returned. He later died in battle in January 2015 while fighting alongside 150 Islamic State jihadists. Additionally, The Boston Herald reported that Fazeli collected food stamps and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, until 2013 when he left to go fight for ISIS. Fazeli’s family found out what happened to Fazeli when he contacted his wife while still outside of the United States, Fazeli’s 25-year-old nephew Ebrahim Fazeli said, noting he was concerned about his aunt and their three children, so he contacted authorities about his uncle. “I wanted to protect them from him,” Ebrahim told the AP. “It was very clear to me that they weren’t important to him.” Follow Kerry on Twitter

Liz Cheney Wins GOP Primary For Congressional Seat It may be the age of Donald Trump in the Republican Party. But a Cheney is likely headed to Congress next year. Liz Cheney, the daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, won a crowded Republican primary for Wyoming’s sole seat in the House of Representatives on Tuesday. It’s the same seat her father once held. Cheney won with nearly 40 percent of the vote. Rivals Leland Christensen won 22 percent, Tim Stubson won 18 percent and Darin Smith won 15.3 percent. Cheney will face Democrat Ryan Greene in the general election, but the state is reliably Republican and a Democrat hasn’t represented the state in Congress since 1976. The current occupant, Republican Rep. Cynthia Lummis, is retiring. Cheney had a significant endorsement and money advantage over her primary opponents: donors included her father, former President George W. Bush, Bush aide Karl Rove and former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld. She was also supported by former Wyoming Sen. Al Simpson and the Casper Star Tribune, the state’s widest circulated newspaper. Cheney, a former Fox News contributor, also has been backed by conservative radio talkers, including Rush Limbaugh, Mark Levin, Sean Hannity and Hugh Hewitt. Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, however, who has sparred over the years with the Cheneys, campaigned for Christensen, a Republican state senator, over Cheney in the race. Follow Alex on Twitter

Farmers' Almanac Forecasts 'Ice Cold Winter' In 2016 Using their “almost 200 century-old formula,” the editors of the “time-tested and generation-approved” Farmers’ Almanac are predicting a frost-bound, Siberian winter for two-thirds of the United States. “Return of the Ice Cold Winter” is how the 2017 edition of the famed annual publication characterizes the impending chill, according to a press release . “Winter is coming!” the Farmers’ Almanac editors announce , as they advise that this year might be a good time to “splurge on a snow blower.” (RELATED: US College Professor Demands Imprisonment For Climate- Change Deniers) The “amazingly accurate” long-range forecast — starting on page 65 — covers September 2016 through December 2017. It prognosticates “exceptionally cold conditions” for several regions of the United States including the Midwest, the Great Lakes and Middle Atlantic regions, the Ohio Valley, and the entire Northeast. “February is the month to really be ready for cold conditions,” Farmers’ Almanac editor Peter Geiger warns. “According to our long-range outlook, many places will see downright frigid temperatures this month, some as low as 40 degrees below zero!” (RELATED: NOT THE GINGERS! Global Warming Zealots Now Claim Redheads Will Soon Disappear) Ski enthusiasts in New England will be ecstatic with mounds of snowfall as well — though also, presumably, pretty cold. Parts of the nation will be spared from the hyperboreal chill. Residents in the western chunk of the United States will experience “milder than normal conditions,” the yearly almanac predicts. Also, the reference book notes, Americans will be able to view a total solar eclipse in August 2017. (RELATED: Professor: Guy HIT BY LIGHTNING And Two Others Possibly Assassinated Over Climate Research) As usual, the 2017 edition of the Farmers’ Almanac — a special collector’s edition — will feature astronomy, humor, practical advice and the like. Various “throwback” sections will also spotlight articles from old editions including “Advice to Girls” (from 1876) and “How to Quiet a Fussy Child” (from 1878). There’s also some tremendous advice about how to raise chickens. “What’s really fascinating is a look into how the world has changed, yet how it’s stayed the same,” observes managing editor Sandi Duncan. (RELATED: Doomsday Professor: WE’RE ALL GONNA DIE BY 2040 From Global Warming) “Accurate long-range weather is what people associate with the Farmers’ Almanac,” Geiger, the editor, added. “Yet, from the start, it has grown into a manual of sorts that can help people live healthier lives. It has been a guide to good living no matter what is going in the outside world.” Follow Eric on Twitter. Like Eric on Facebook. Send warm hats and mittens to to [email protected].

Rick Perry: Khan Shouldn't Have Expected 'Free Ride' The former governor of Texas said that the Gold Star family attacking Republican nominee Donald Trump at the July Democratic National Convention (DNC) shouldn’t expect a “free ride.” “Mr. Khan is the one who went out and struck the first blow,” former Texas Governor Rick Perry told CNN’s Jake Tapper Tuesday. “In a campaign, if you are going to go out and think you can take a shot and somebody and not have incoming coming back at you, shame on you.” Perry went on to criticize the Democrats for putting the man on stage in an apparent attempt to bate Trump. Former Texas Gov. Rick Perry discusses his economic plan at a National Press Club luncheon speech in Washington (Reuters) “I think the Democrats used him in a way, quite frankly, I’m not sure I approve of. We love our veterans, we love our Gold Star families, but the fact of the matter is Mr. Khan politically used his time on the stage to go after Donald Trump.” Perry finished the interview by adding, “Why in the world he thought he was going to get a free ride with that is beyond me. He shouldn’t get a free ride when he’s going to inject himself in the political arena.” Khizr Khan walks off stage after speaking about their son US Army Captain Humayun Khan (Credit: ROBYN /AFP/Getty Images) Khizr Khan made a name for himself when he pulled out a pocket Constitution and accused Trump of not making any sacrifices for the nation. 85 Local ‘Times’ Misses the Story Again “Barred from Fla. Voting,” the top of page 1A headline of Monday’s Tampa Bay Times sobs above a whiney story about the fact Florida does not allow convicted felons to vote, even after they’ve been released from prison, unless they complete a process to restore their civil rights. A process that many folks who found Florida’s laws inconvenient, thus their problems with the legal system, find too inconvenient to maneuver. Easier, and doubtless more satisfying, to complain to sympathetic reporters. According to the relentlessly leftist Times, the offense here, other than the original ones of course, about which the Times shows little interest, is that 1.5 million felons in Florida, who have demonstrated no respect for the state’s laws, cannot help choose those who enact and execute those laws. The story, actually a thinly veiled editorial masquerading as a news story, pleads that the proper path would be for felons to go directly from the prison cell to the voting booth. The process for restoring voting rights for felons is indeed long. But it is designed to ferret out those offenders who have truly gotten themselves between the ditches. It requires time and effort on the part of the applicants. But these folks did not become felons for being late to choir practice. Their offenses were real, as was the harm caused by them. Many who’ve gone astray at one point deserve a second chance. But society deserves a process that sees that second chances go to those who deserve them. And, oh yea, the story. Had these numbers landed on my desk back when I was writing for a daily newspaper, the story would have been that Florida has a shocking total of 1.5 million felons, not that these former drug dealers, burglars, arsonists, check kiters, and other kinds of bad actors can’t help select who their county commissioners will be. Or perhaps even be able to vote against the judge who sent them to prison.

Mum told to 'shut up' child on flight shames passenger on Facebook A mother's Facebook post shaming a passenger who yelled abuse at her family over their ill child having a "meltdown" on a flight has gone viral. Nicola Colenso, from Northwich, said the "abusive" woman shouted "shut that child up" as her daughter Yasmin was crying on the flight to Manchester. The eight-year-old suffers from Sturge-Weber syndrome, a rare condition affecting the skin, brain and eyes. The mother's Facebook post has been shared nearly 100,000 times. She said her daughter was "taken to hospital by ambulance" later that day after she became "seriously unwell". In her social media post, Ms Colenso said she was flying from Ibiza with her partner Rick Murray and Yasmin's three siblings when she was subjected to the outburst that "didn't help" her daughter's anxiety levels. Ms Colenso said she tried to explain her daughter's situation to the angry woman "very politely" and suggested she ask staff if she could be moved. She said the woman replied that she was "sick of the noise" and demanded she "just shut her up".

Childhood obesity strategy: 'TV advert ban unlikely' Curbs on junk food advertising and cheap supermarket deals will not form part of the government's plan for tackling obesity, the BBC understands. Sources say the strategy will be published on Thursday. They say it will include measures to cut sugar in food and drink by 20% and details of the sugar levy. But it is understood other measures favoured by public health experts - such as supermarket price promotions - will not be addressed. The Government strategy on childhood obesity in England has been much talked about since last summer and the final document has been expected for months. Charities had called for wide-ranging measures including restrictions on television advertisements, changes to rules on cut price promotions of junk food and a greater focus on exercise. The BBC understands the final plans will include measures to promote sport at school. Meanwhile plans for a tax on sugary drinks across the UK were announced five months ago. Sources say the obesity strategy will outline England's plans for this levy in more detail. And BBC Health Editor Hugh Pym said plans to cut sugar content by 20% over four years could be "seen as quite a radical policy". But he added: "It is what is not there which will raise some eyebrows. " He said: "Campaigners will also say 'why on earth is this coming out in the Parliamentary recess?' "'The Chancellor is away, the Health Secretary is away, the Prime Minister is away, does this suggest some lack of commitment to the whole plan? " The obesity strategy was proposed to tackle rising weights in children. Statistics suggest one in 10 children in England are obese at the start of primary school.

Anjem Choudary case raises terror law questions The conviction of radical cleric Anjem Choudary shows there is "room for improvement" in UK counter- terrorism legislation, a legal expert has said. David Anderson QC said the law had "barely touched" Choudary for 20 years, before he was found guilty of inviting support for so-called Islamic State. The UK must establish whether any "impediments" were making it harder to get convictions, Mr Anderson added. Choudary, 49, was arrested in 2014 and faces a maximum of 10 years in prison. Counter-terrorism chiefs have spent almost 20 years trying to bring him to trial, blaming him, and the proscribed organisations which he helped to run, for radicalising young men and women The father-of-five - who was arrested in 2014 after pledging allegiance to IS - was convicted alongside confidant Mohammed Mizanur Rahman. Both men were charged with one offence of inviting support for IS - which is contrary to section 12 of the Terrorism Act 2000 - between 29 June 2014 and 6 March 2015. The verdict on the two defendants was delivered on 28 July, but was only reported on Tuesday following the conclusion of a separate trial at the Old Bailey. Mr Anderson, the government's independent reviewer of terrorism legislation, said there were "useful offences" for prosecutors to use to charge people spreading radical ideas. However, he told BBC Radio 4's Today programme these had not helped authorities bring Choudary - one of the UK's most notorious radical clerics - to justice more quickly. "In the meantime a lot of people have been radicalised," Mr Anderson said, adding: "We do need to look at what might be done if there are impediments, technical reasons why it's not as easy to get convictions under these laws as it should be. " He said it was "very difficult to craft a law that can clearly distinguish people who are dangerous from people who are simply revolting". He added: "If you go back 10 or 12 years you had home secretaries saying the criminal justice system is broken, it couldn't deal with terrorism. "I think we've shown now that that is wrong but of course there is room for improvement. " Preventing the continued influence of Choudary while he was in prison could be a "very difficult job", added Raffaello Pantucci, from the Royal United Services Institute. He told Today that Choudary was a "bright flame" who had drawn people to him, but that finding himself "sitting in a prison cell will mean that his network will be degraded". However, he added that Choudary was "a very charming and charismatic individual and undoubtedly if he's in prison he's going to be surrounded by very vulnerable and impressionable people". "I would not be surprised if some of it may rub off on them," he said. Police have said Choudary stayed "just within the law" for years, but that many people tried for serious terror offences were influenced by his lectures and speeches. During his trail, the jury heard how Choudary and Rahman invited others to support the militant group through speeches and announced their own oath of allegiance to its leader. The oath of allegiance had been a "turning point" and meant they could be put on trial, said the Metropolitan Police. When IS announced a "Khilafah" - an Islamic state - in June 2014, the court heard that Choudary held a meeting with his closest aides at a curry house in east London. Before accepting the "Khilafah" was legitimate, the jury heard he consulted his "spiritual guide" Omar Bakri Mohammed, who is currently in jail in Lebanon. On 7 July 2014, the men's names appeared alongside Rahman's on the oath, which stated the al-Muhajiroun had "affirmed" the legitimacy of the "proclaimed Islamic Caliphate State". Commander Dean Haydon, head of the Met's counter-terrorism unit, said the conviction of Choudary and Rahman was a "significant prosecution in our fight against terrorism". Sue Hemming, head of counter-terrorism at the Crown Prosecution Service, said the two men "knowingly sought to legitimise a terrorist organisation and encouraged others to support it". "They used the power of social media to attempt to influence those who are susceptible to these types of messages, which might include the young or vulnerable," she added. The two men will be sentenced in September.

Wedding dress for sale to pay for divorce A woman selling her wedding dress on eBay says she is selling it to fund her divorce, after her husband left her and moved in with another woman. Samantha Wragg, of Chesterfield, says she is "mainly selling as I need to pay for my divorce which my ex-husband has left me to foot the bill for". Ms Wragg says she added her story to her advert on the online auction site after initially not receiving any bids. The Art Couture dress has now attracted bids in excess of £13,000. Ms Wragg, who is 28, says her parents bought her the size six dress for "around £2,000" in 2014. She first put it up on eBay for £500 on 11 August. She describes it on the listing as being in "great condition but needs dry cleaning before wearing to get rid of the stench of betrayal", adding that she did not have time to have it cleaned before her husband "decided to call an end to our marriage". She added: "I'll also throw in my veil (yes, that's right - I went all out princess on the day!). " She goes on to apologise for only posting two photographs of the dress on the advert, but says that "when I found out my husband was living with another woman, I pretty much burned/permanently deleted everything with his disgusting face on it! " She added: "If you want a dress that is full of bad memories and shattered hopes and dreams then this is the one for you! Hope this dress brings you a lot more happiness than it brought me in the end and if not...well you can always sell it on here! " Ms Wragg, who says she works in social media, also runs a lifestyle and fashion blog. After her story was picked up by the media, she wrote a blog post about her reasons for selling the dress. In it, she says her husband left the relationship in January. She wrote: "I had my wedding dress on eBay for two weeks with barely any views so I decided with a little help from my brother (ok it was all his idea!) to make it funny. "A lot of people have got the wrong end of the stick and think it's really bitter but anyone who knows me knows I've got a great sense of humour and it's very tongue in cheek. " She goes on to say that she "literally can't count the amount of messages I've had on eBay from both men and women wishing me all the best with everything". Two of those messages, she says, have been marriage proposals. But they are falling on deaf ears, because Ms Wragg has recently posted on Instagram about a man she is now dating. And despite the tone of her online advert, Ms Wragg says she does not bear her ex any ill will. "I wish my ex-husband all the best with everything. Yes, he made a terrible and really hurtful mistake but he's got to live with that (and without me!) for the rest of his life. "I forgive him and I'm very happy now so I hope he is too. "

Labour leadership debate: Owen Smith suggests IS talks Labour leadership challenger Owen Smith has suggested the so-called Islamic State could be involved in negotiations with the West in the future. Mr Smith said all conflicts ended in "dialogue", during a two-hour debate with Jeremy Corbyn on the BBC's Victoria Derbyshire programme. The Labour leader said he would not negotiate with so-called Islamic State. The pair also clashed over allegations of abuse within the Labour Party, nuclear weapons and the EU referendum. Commenting after the debate, Mr Corbyn's campaign team called Mr Smith's comments on IS "hasty and ill-considered". But Mr Smith stressed he was not suggesting "we're going to be able to bring ISIS round the table right now. " Pressed on how soon it might happen, he told BBC News: "We don't know. We would all hope that it happens quickly, we would all hope they stop being a murderous terrorist organisation and try and bring about peace. But at the moment there's no evidence of that, is there? " The audience of 100 Labour supporters in Nottingham repeatedly expressed concern about "abuse" between the two sides in the leadership contest. Mr Smith said Labour had become divided, with Mr Corbyn's supporters feeling he was the "only socialist in the Labour Party". "The truth is I'm not a red Tory, I'm not a Blairite, I'm a socialist same as you," Mr Smith said. But when Victoria Derbyshire suggested to the Labour leader the atmosphere within the party had become "toxic", Mr Corbyn hit back, asking: "Well, how do you know? " Mr Corbyn said he had attended Labour events all over the country with "people of all shades of opinion having an intelligent, respectful discussion and debate". "That is how we should do things at all times," he said. We knew that there were few major policy differences between the two men and that the real division was over who had the qualities to lead the Labour Party. Jeremy Corbyn failing to recognise Ant and Dec is the sort of thing that might get talked about in the pub on Wednesday night, while the political establishment is wondering whether Owen Smith really does think there will come a time for talks with so-called Islamic State. The main thing I will take away from the debate is just how upset angry, confused and hurt ordinary Labour members are about the state of their party. The two men also clashed over who was responsible for Labour's low opinion poll ratings, with Mr Smith repeating his assertion that Mr Corbyn could not lead the party to power and Mr Corbyn urging him to rejoin the shadow cabinet. In a quick-fire question round, Mr Smith said being described as a "Tory" was worse than being described as a "smarmy nonentity" (a quote from Spectator columnist Rod Liddle). And Mr Corbyn could not identify TV presenters Ant and Dec when shown a picture of them. On foreign affairs, Mr Smith suggested the so-called Islamic State would eventually have to be brought into peace talks if there was to be a settlement to Syria's civil war. Referring to his experience as an adviser to Labour's former Northern Ireland Secretary Paul Murphy, he said: "Ultimately all solutions to these sorts of international crises do come about through dialogue. "So eventually, if we are to try and solve this, all of the actors do need to be involved. "But at the moment, Isil are clearly not interested in negotiating. " He added: "At some point, for us to resolve this, we will need to get people round the table. " Asked the same question, Mr Corbyn said: "They are not going to be round the table. No. " Speaking after the debate, Mr Corbyn's leadership campaign described Mr Smith's on comments on IS as "hasty and ill-considered". The spokesman said: "Jeremy has always argued that there must be a negotiated political solution to the war in Syria and the wider Middle East, and that maintaining lines of communication during conflicts is essential. "But Isis cannot be part of those negotiations. Instead, its sources of funding and supplies must be cut off. " The comments were also seized on by the Conservative Party, with Tory MP and member of the Defence Select Committee Johnny Mercer saying it showed Mr Smith's "unfitness for leadership". "It shows that whoever wins this increasingly bizarre leadership election, I'm afraid Labour just cannot be trusted with keeping us safe," added Mr Mercer. But Mr Smith's campaign said he was "clear" there should be no negotiation with the so-called Islamic State, or Daesh as it is also known, "until they renounce violence, cease all acts of terror and commit themselves to a peaceful settlement". "Owen's experience of helping to bring about peace in Northern Ireland is that eventually all parties who truly believe in delivering peace have to be around the table. "In the Middle East at the moment that clearly doesn't include - and may never include - Daesh. "

Communist Agitators Fomenting RAGE In Riot Torn Milwaukee A tiny faction of old, radical communist revolutionaries is helping to lead and organize the violence which has engulfed Milwaukee in the wake of the police shooting death of a black man who, police say, raised a semiautomatic handgun at pursuing officers. The fringe-left group is the chapter of the Revolutionary Communist Party — a Maoist outfit which advocates violent insurgency. Its membership is mostly white. Revolutionary Communist Party members managed to turn a generally peaceful Sunday evening in Milwaukee into another night of violence by organizing a several-blocks-long march, Milwaukee police chief Ed Flynn told the Associated Press . The radical communists “showed up, and actually they’re the ones who started to cause problems,” Flynn said at a Monday press conference. In the image below, the man below the red arrow is wearing a shirt advertising the Revolutionary Communist Party’s message. (The letters BA stand for the group’s founder and cult-like leader, Bob Avakian.) The Revolutionary Communist Party in Milwaukee (Reuters/Aaron P. Bernstein) Video footage of the march shows participants galloping through the streets, enthusiastically knocking over orange construction barriers. Revolutionary Communist Party co-founder Carl Dix defended the group’s antics. “This system sees police wantonly murdering people as part of the normal order of things,” Dix told the AP, adding that the Revolutionary Communist Party seeks to demolish America’s police forces completely. “The killer cops always get off. People are sick of that,” Dix also said. The Revolutionary Communist Party’s trip to Milwaukee in the wake of this weekend’s shooting is far from its first attempt to agitate. In fact, the fringe group regularly seeks to conceal itself in growing radical movements involving protests against police. In November, for example, the Revolutionary Communist Party was a primary organizer behind a series of protests in Chicago over the brutal police shooting of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald. Old, white agitators from the Revolutionary Communist Party led a zigzagging protest through the streets downtown Chicago. The march featured much chanting and a stop at the sleek Trump International Hotel & Tower. (RELATED: Old, White Communists Lead Anti-Cop Protests In Chicago Over McDonald Death) The obscure clutch of communists worked in unison to carry a bullhorn connected loud-speaker as well as a carefully crafted sign from an October protest in New York City. Members of the Revolutionary Communist Party energetically distributed flyers communicating their plan to co-opt the protest movement in Chicago. The Daily Caller obtained one of the flyers. It describes the work of America’s police officers as “a campaign of terror with genocidal implications.” “This is a situation where the burning anger and righteous refusal of the people to take this shit any more has erupted repeatedly into resistance since the uprising in Ferguson over Mike Brown’s murder,” the handout explains. “We need an end to the whole system of capitalism-imperialism,” it urges. “This requires an actual revolution. This revolution is real and possible.” On the front page of the Revolutionary Communist Party’s website , the party is currently selling a book by founder Bob Avakian, entitled “The New Communism.” The book purports to offer “the science, the strategy, the leadership for an actual revolution, and a radically new society on the road to real emancipation.” Avakian, who enjoyed a comfortable middle-class boyhood, became radicalized in the 1960s during his time in Berkeley. He was part of the Students for a Democratic Society with Bill Ayers and, later, became aligned with the Black Panthers. He founded the Revolutionary Communist Party in 1975. The Revolutionary Communist Party runs a handful of radical bookstore franchises around the country called Revolution Books. The one in Chicago is on Ashland Ave., is next to a paint store and across the street from an upscale vendor of eyeglasses. Avakian — “Chairman Bob” — is now a very old, fringe oddball in bizarrely self-imposed exile. Only his closest acolytes know where. It’s not clear why Avakian feels compelled to live in exile because virtually no one cares about him or his radical Communist program. In Chicago, in November, the main communist agitator who shouted a continuous barrage of chants through the Revolutionary Communist Party’s bullhorn was longtime Chicago activist Grant Newburger. Newburger, who is nearly 69, called himself a leader of the Revolutionary Communist Youth Brigade as a fortysomething radical, according to the Chicago Reader . The gray-haired , pasty-white Newburger shouted constantly into his bullhorn during the protest, repeatedly referred to the predominately black protesters as “y’all.” One favorite chant of Newburger’s was: “We’re black. We’re strong. We’re marchin’ all night long.” Another communist agitator who spoke into the communal Maoist bullhorn during the Chicago protests was Revolutionary Communist Party member Lou Downey. “Send the killer cops to jail,” Downey urged Chicago protesters to chant. In September 2015, Downey raised $1,652 using a Gofundme account for his exploits in Ferguson, Missouri. In the summer of 2014, members of the Revolutionary Communist Party were fixtures in Ferguson, stirring up the protests which led eventually to a night of mayhem after a grand jury decided not to convict police officer Darren Wilson for shooting and killing 18-year-old Michael Brown. (RELATED: Total Police Failure Brings Absolute Mayhem To Ferguson After Grand Jury Announcement) “We are revolutionaries,” Downey, the well-traveled white communist agitator, told in August 2014. “We’re working to do this in a way that puts an end to the system that for generations has criminalized youth, especially black youth.” Saturday’s police shooting in Milwaukee involved two officers and Sylville Smith, an armed black man with a long rap sheet. Smith, 23, fled on foot from a car during an afternoon traffic stop on Milwaukee’s North Side. During the ensuing chase, police say, Smith raised a semiautomatic handgun. The officer who fatally shot Smith is black. Flynn, the Milwaukee police chief, said investigators are reviewing police body camera footage of the incident. Several videos recorded during a Saturday night riot in Milwaukee appear to show black rioters hunting down white passerby to attack . The weekend riots caused considerable damage. At least half a dozen retail businesses went up in flames. Several police officers were hurt by objects hurled by rioters. Follow Eric on Twitter. Like Eric on Facebook. 92 Soros Paid Al Gore MILLIONS To Push Global Warming Policies Liberal billionaire George Soros gave former Vice President Al Gore’s environmental group millions of dollars over three years to create a “political space for aggressive U. S. action” on global warming, according to leaked documents. A document published by DC Leaks shows Soros, a Hungarian-born liberal financier, wanted his nonprofit Open Society Institute (OSI) to do more to support global warming policies in the U. S. That included budgeting $10 million in annual support to Gore’s climate group over three years. “U. S. Programs Global Warming Grants U. S. Programs became engaged on the global warming issue about four years ago, at George Soros’s suggestion,” reads a leaked OSI memo. “There has been a budget of $11 million for global warming grants in the U. S. Programs budget for the last several years,” the memo reads. “This budget item captures George Soros’s commitment of $10 million per year for three years to Al Gore’s Alliance for Climate Protection, which conducts public education on the climate issue in pursuit of creating political space for aggressive U. S. action in line with what scientists say is necessary to put our nation on a path to reducing its outsize carbon dioxide emissions.” It’s unclear what year the memo was sent, but the Gore co-founded Alliance for Climate Protection (ACP) was established in 2006 and lasted until it became The Climate Reality Project in July 2011. In 2008, the Alliance launched a $300 million campaign to encourage “Americans to push for aggressive reductions in greenhouse gas emissions,” reported. ACP got $10 million from the Open Society Institute (OSI) in 2008, according to the nonprofit’s tax filings. OSI handed over another $5 million to ACP in 2009, according to tax filings. The investigative reporting group ProPublica keeps a database that has OSI tax returns from 2000 to 2013. TheDCNF could not find other years where OSI gave money to ACP. OSI is primarily a grant-making nonprofit that hands out millions of dollars every year to mostly left-wing causes. Now called the Open Society Foundations, Soros’s nonprofit has handed out more than $13 billion over the last three decades. OSI didn’t only plan to fund Gore’s climate group to promote global warming policies in the U. S., OSI also planned on giving millions of dollars to spur the “youth climate movement.” “This budget item also allows for the renewal of U. S. Programs’ long- standing support of the Energy Action Coalition, which is the lead organizer of the youth climate movement in the U. S., the memo reads. “We are also including a placeholder for an additional $2 million, pending discussion about and development of OSI’s global warming agenda,” the memo reads. “There is a memo from Nancy Youman in the strategic plans binder that recommends pathways forward for OSI on the climate issue – in the U. S., as well as in other parts of the Open Society Network.” Follow Michael on Facebook and Twitter Content created by The Daily Caller News Foundation is available without charge to any eligible news publisher that can provide a large audience. 93 Obama's Rules Of Engagement Let 200 ISIS Fighters Go Free The Pentagon withheld fire on a convoy of 200 Islamic State fighters fleeing a major stronghold in Syria over the weekend out of fear of civilian casualties. “We did not conduct any strikes because [every vehicle] had civilians in it or on it, and so we watched, we kept track,” Pentagon Spokesman Army Col. Chris Garver told reporters Tuesday. Garver assured reporters the convoy was tracked and wouldn’t confirm its current location, saying it was part of an “ongoing operation.” The ISIS fighters took flight after U. S.-backed fighters seized ISIS’s last stronghold on the Turkish border. ISIS used the town to ferry foreign fighters who arrived in Turkey to training camps and other cities throughout Iraq and Syria. The Obama administration has put in place extremely constrictive rules of engagement on U. S. aircraft striking ISIS in Iraq and Syria. Routine strikes must be approved by high level commanders, and very large strikes reportedly must be approved by the White House. President Barack Obama’s rules of engagement reflect his desire to allow zero civilian casualties whatsoever in U. S. airstrikes. In some cases, pilots who’ve requested permission to engage were forced to circle targets in the air while permission was sought through the chain of command. “The gradualistic, painfully slow, incremental efforts of the current administration undercut the principals of modern warfare, and harken back to the approach followed by the Johnson administration,” Retired Air Force Lt. Gen. David Deptula told USA Today in April. White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest defended the rules of engagement in a briefing saying the administration is, “justifiably proud of the great lengths we’ve gone to to avoid civilian casualties — certainly greater lengths than our adversaries in this conflict.” The Pentagon’s admission demonstrates the constraints placed by the Obama administration on use of American firepower against ISIS. ISIS knows the U. S. rules of engagement and purposefully games them, to ensure the U. S. will not strike it at critical moments. The tactic mimics Palestinian terror group Hamas’s use of schools as weapons depots, to discourage Israel from targeting its supplies. 97 Jews in South Florida concerned but not panicked over Zika virus crisis NEW YORK - With over 2000 cases of the Zika virus found in the United States and even more in US territories, particularly Puerto Rico, the virus has made headlines for months in the United States. As the crisis grows, officials across the country have been calling on Congress to approve federal funding to tackle the mosquito-transmitted virus. Be the first to know - Join our Facebook page. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said on Tuesday his city needs federal help “so badly. " According to numbers reported by the national arboviral surveillance system ArboNET, 27% of the travel- associated cases of Zika in the US as of August 10th 2016 were found in New York, home to the largest Jewish community in the United States. Florida is a close second with 322 or 16% of all cases of travel associated Zika in US States. The Sunshine state however leads the nation when it comes to locally acquired cases of Zika: the six patients who have locally acquired the virus so far were all in South Florida. As the region is home to some half a million Jews, Jewish organizations and religious leaders have been making sure to stay informed on the topic. Rabbi Shmuel Gopin of the Chabad at Midtown Jewish center in the Wynwood section of , told The Jerusalem Post that while his congregants are concerned about Zika, they have not changed their plans or the way they live in recent months. “People still go outside, they haven't changed their plans of where and how they live, but it comes up in shul almost every time: what’s the update? Did they clear a little bit more of the neighborhood or not? But other than this, people are not so much concerned about it,” he said. Chabad at Midtown is located within the perimeter designated by the Center for Disease Control as a Zika danger zone. The neighborhood has a particularly high rate of the infection, Earlier this month, a travel warning, advising pregnant women not to visit the Wynwood was even issued. Head Rabbi of the modern orthodox Boca Raton Synagogue, Efrem Goldberg, also told the Post that while the question of Zika has been coming up with his congregation recently, he has not felt that his community is very worried about it. “I wouldn't say that people are panicking over it,” he said. “Even with the cases that have happened in South Florida, it’s still something that remains very unlikely for a person to contract statistically.” Last week, the Boca Raton Synagogue, attended by some 800 families including 175 doctors, put out a notice about Zika in their weekly newsletter detailing some of the precautions to be taken in order to avoid contracting the virus, including using mosquito repellent and getting rid of any standing water. Making sure the religious Jewish community is aware of the effects of Zika, Rabbi Gopin of Chabad said, is very important. “I find that we are not educated enough,” he said. “You can see that because we have a kosher bakery in the neighborhood called ‘Zak the Baker’ and they lost a lot of business because religious people would not come to visit the neighborhood as much.” “And I’m talking about older people who do not have risks with Zika,” he continued. “It’s a lack of education.” Rabbi Gopin said he has been researching the virus and reading up on the latest news so that he can better explain it to his community. He added that the main concern they currently have is about the authorities spraying their neighborhood with anti-mosquito chemicals. “The truth is people are divided about the spraying, because they spray very heavily here,” he told the Post. “They are divided as to whether its good or not. There are people who say that the consequences of the spraying is worse than the Zika virus and some are happier about it because it gives you some sense of protection.” The Center for Disease Control has issued advice for people living in Florida and especially in the Miami-Dade and Broward counties, where the US locally transmitted cases are concentrated. The instructions especially focus on pregnant women, for whom Zika is most dangerous, as it can cause severe birth defects such as microcephaly, where babies are born with abnormally small heads. The CDC advises pregnant women not to travel to South Florida, prevent mosquito bites, and be assessed for possible Zika virus exposure during each prenatal care visit. It is also advised to pregnant women to use protection when having sex with their partner during the pregnancy, as Zika can be sexually transmitted as well. In addition, women with Zika should wait at least 8 weeks and men with Zika should wait at least 6 months after symptoms began to try to get pregnant. Rabbi Goldberg told the Post the question of using condoms, has been brought up several times in his Orthodox congregation. “The doctor told [some men] that because their wife is pregnant, if they were to be bitten by a mosquito and contract Zika, they could pass it on to her and the most vulnerable is obviously the fetus,” he said. “So the doctor instructed them that they were not allowed to be together without the use of condoms to ensure that it wouldn’t be transmitted from him to her.” “In the Orthodox community, generally condoms are not considered to be a legitimate form of birth control, even when birth control is allowed, so the Halacha question that was put forward is: would this be an exception because it’s for the well-being of the baby?” he explained As a general rule, Goldberg said, “any time there is awareness of life- threatening or generally health-threatening illnesses, the Jewish law responds to be very vigilant and careful” “We put a premium on well-being and safety,” he continued. As local government representatives have been engaging in bipartisan efforts to get Congress, which is currently in summer recess, to allocate funding in order to fight the virus, Jewish organizations too have been advocating alongside them. This includes the Orthodox Union of South Florida, which has met with Florida Congressman Ted Deutch last week to discuss the response to Zika. Rabbi Judah Isaacs of the Orthodox Union said they have been “carefully looking into into the situation”. “I think if the government intervenes quickly, we could find a vaccine or something that can help eradicate the virus,” he added. Both Rabbis Goldberg in Boca Raton and Gopin in Wynwood told The Jerusalem Post that as religious leaders, they often finds themselves talking about health issues with their congregants. “People definitely ask their questions,” Rabbi Goldberg said. “There are end of life questions, there are personal choices in terms of surgeries, elective surgeries, plastic surgeries.” Health issues are in fact so prevalent that his synagogue has been organizing for a women’s health and Halacha day for the past couple of years. This year, they will be introducing a men’s health and Halacha day as well. “That’s what leadership is about. It’s about having your fingers on the pulse of the issues of the day are,” he explained. “We believe that the Torah and Judaism have a lot to say about all that is occurring and really should inform, inspire and guide our lives, certainly for something as important as our health and well being.” Rabbi Gopin told the Post that oftentimes, rabbis play a key role in how a person who is ill will seek treatment. “We are almost secondary to the doctor,” he said. “After they go to the doctor’s office, people come to us, and we try to help as much as we can.” One of Rabbi Goldberg’s congregants in Boca Raton, Dr Borzack, who pushed for the synagogue to include the Zika notice in its latest newsletter, said he believes that the community should remain alert about Zika. “Just like we are concerned about hurricanes, we should be concerned about Zika,” he told the Post. 98 Globe scores duopoly critics Globe Telecom fired back at its critics Wednesday, saying a new challenger was not the solution to better services and that San Miguel Corp.— the last company that attempted to break into the sector—would have had difficulty succeeding because of its “barely adequate” infrastructure. Globe’s strongly-worded statement was a departure from earlier releases, which mainly focused on the telco’s network expansion plans or calls for government to cut bureaucratic red tape. The criticism now of SMC’s telco ambitions comes as Globe and PLDT are locked in a legal dispute with the Philippine Competition Commission, which wants to review the duopoly’s P70-billion joint buyout of SMC’s telecommunications unit last May 30. The statement was quoting Globe CEO Ernest Cu, who was addressing a recent forum in Davao. Cu said they were ready to compete with new players, but barriers to entry were not the PLDT-Globe incumbents but massive investments and the stiff local government unit permitting process, which delays the rollout of crucial cell sites. Cu added that a new player should invest in “incremental” infrastructure, and not rely on sharing assets that PLDT and Globe had already built. Referring to SMC, Cu said the conglomerate was threatening to challenge PLDT and Globe, but after they acquired the company’s telco unit last May, it was found to have just 230 cell sites. “That is after two years of trying to build a network. You’ve heard about them trying to build their network but in reality, you go there, there’s nothing in there,” Cu said in the statement. Cu added that SMC’s cell sites had to be “dismantled” since the buyout because these were overlapping with PLDT and Globe’s network. “There is no incremental value because the sites they built on already have existing telco sites,” Cu said. SMC President Ramon S. Ang did not immediately respond to a request for comment. A PLDT official also did not immediately respond. Ang said earlier they planned to launch a “better and cheaper” mobile internet service within this year. The initial plan would cover Metro Manila and nearby provinces. Ang said they required less cell sites because of SMC’s radio frequencies, including those in the 700 megahertz band, which could efficiently cover wide distances and penetrate buildings. Prospects for SMC’s entry weakened after talks with possible partner Telstra Corp. of Australia collapsed last March. Ang said sale negotiations with PLDT and Globe started shortly after that. Cu said in a mature telecommunications market like the Philippines, “late entrants end up being bought by one of the other players.” He said government should instead make it easier for telco companies to build more infrastructure to adjust to growing demand, now centered on internet services. To deploy network infrastructure, it takes 25 permits and about eight months to complete the approval process of one cell site, he said. “The Philippines continues to lag behind in terms of cell site density that will improve mobile internet experience in the country. In addition, the roll out of fiber optic cables as last mile solution to bring broadband services to homes is likewise challenged due to right of way issues,” Globe said in its statement. 99 Intel unveils own VR headset Intel and Microsoft said they are working together on a new virtual reality headgear that will not require tethering to a stationary PC unit. A prototype of the “Project Alloy” was unveiled at a recently concluded Intel event in San Francisco, USA. The device showed that it had overcome the inconveniences that came with the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive such as the long lines of cables and the limitations in mobility that these cables cause. Terry Myerson, leader for Microsoft’s Windows group, boasted that Intel and Microsoft have found ways to run different VR applications on less powerful PCs compared with kinds of system that the Oculus and Vibe require. Intel and Microsoft plan to release in December guidelines that are intended to standardize VR headsets as well as make content and software available across different products. Starting next year, Windows will receive an update called Windows Holographic, which will provide support for virtual and augmented reality headsets for all Windows 10 PCs. On the Intel side, CEO Brian Krzanich talked about developing further VR capture technology that can re-create events such as concerts and gaming shows. Krzanich also said that the technology, dubbed 360 Replay, could be used to create and show new kinds of movies. Alfred Bayle

Ola shuts down TaxiForSure, lays off at least 700 people New Delhi : Transportation app Ola has decided to shut down the TaxiForSure (TFS) business, about 18 months after acquiring the rival for USD 200 million. The development is expected to result in slashing at least 700 jobs, which includes employees in support services and business development, according to sources. "The TFS value proposition as an economy brand for customers, has been seamlessly integrated onto the Ola platform with the launch and rapid adoption of Ola Micro. With all TFS driver-partners and customers coming on board the Ola app, the integration is now complete," Ola said in response to an emailed query. Earlier this year, SoftBank-backed Ola had launched 'Micro', its low-cost AC cab service, which has now been expanded to over 90 Indian cities. Ola, which has been working on reducing its cash burn, said Micro accounts for the largest share of first time cab users coming onto any mobility platform. While Ola declined to comment on the number of employees being laid off, it said it has absorbed "as many TFS employees for open roles in Ola to support our growth. " "For positions that cease to exist as a result of this transition, we are offering enhanced severance benefits and outplacement services to help affected employees pursue new career opportunities," it added. In March 2015, Ola had bought TaxiForSure to consolidate its position in the country's cab-hailing market and widen lead over Uber. Ola is entangled in an intense battle with Uber for leadership in the Indian market that has grown manifold for both the players. The competition is expected to intensify further in the coming months as Uber expands its focus on the Indian market after selling off its China operations to Didi Chuxing. Interestingly, Didi is a minority investor in Ola and also shares a common investor in SoftBank.
