The installation of the extra fuel tanks blocked his forward view and he could only see out the side of the aircraft.

His flight plan called for him to return to California. On July 17, Corrigan took off in thick fog, and headed east because airport officials had told him to lift off in any direction save west, as there were some buildings at the western edge of the field. He continued flying east, claiming his compass indicated he was heading west. After a twenty-eight hour, thirteen-minute flight, Corrigan landed in Dublin, Ireland. He became a national hero, and his nickname, “Wrong Way Corrigan,” became a colloquialism describing anyone who blunders and goes the wrong way.2 This essay argues that some of the assumptions by which we view and regulate the nonprofit sector are traveling, as did Wrong Way Corrigan, in the wrong direction. This is due to faulty assumptions about the nonprofit universe, overreactions to perceived problems, and a reluctance to consider innovative approaches to existing problems. This essay examines some of the erroneous assumptions, discusses recent legislative initiatives, and suggests that there is a need for more than incremental approaches when considering the nonprofit landscape. It argues that regulation of fiduciary behavior should be at the local level, or a combination of local and state regulation, in contrast to federal enforcement.

    MY FIRST THREE CACHET COVER DESIGNS By Philip S. Dockter Growing up in the early 1960s my brothers and I all had our own hobbies. we collected stamps and coins. Our Dad would bring us home a big bag of coins from the bank so we could rummage thru that heavy bag and find all sorts of neat coins. There would be Indian head pennies, Buffalo nickels and Mercury head dimes, and even some steel pennies from WWII would show up. There were lots of pennies from the early teens, and the first Lincoln head pennies from 1909 showed their heads! For some reason, I began to have an interest in First Day of Issue covers. These were mostly ArtCraft covers. I liked the designs and the feel of the steel etched engravings. Each cover seemed to tell a story in their small cachets. I had no idea what these covers were all about. And, WHAT was a first day cover, anyway? My first cover project… In 1988, a 50th anniversary of a very famous flight was approaching. In some way I wanted to celebrate that event, but HOW? I knew that the pilot of that flight was still living here in California. Maybe he might like my idea that was cooking around in my head. Perhaps I can design a cover like the ArtCraft covers that I had collected all those years ago! As a graphic designer, this job would be an easy task for me to do. I have worked with printers for many years, and had a good printer that could easily do the job of printing my covers.

    January 2019 “Wrong Way” Corrigan Contributed by Brian P. Hegarty Jr. Douglas Corrigan, the last of the glory seeking fliers, took off from Brooklyn’s Floyd Bennett Field on July 17, 1938, on a flight that would finally win him a place in aviation history. He carried two chocolate bars, two boxes of fig bars, a quart of water and a U.S map with the route from New York to California marked out. It was a foggy morning and Corrigan flew into the haze and disappeared. Twenty-eight hours later, in a plane that was structurally unsound, leaking fuel, lacking a reliable compass and equipped with reserve fuel tanks mounted in such a way that they blocked his straight- ahead view, he landed in Dublin, Ireland and instantly became a national hero. Although the transatlantic flight was far from unprecedented, Corrigan received national attention simply because the press was amazed that his rattletrap aircraft had survived the journey. Eleven years earlier, American Charles Lindbergh had become an international celebrity with his solo nonstop flight across the Atlantic to Paris. Corrigan was among the mechanics who had worked on Lindbergh’s Spirit of St. Louis aircraft and this inspired Corrigan to make a transatlantic flight. Since Corrigan was an Irish-American, for him Dublin became the obvious choice. In 1933, Corrigan bought a 1929 Curtiss Robin aircraft off a trash heap, rebuilt it, and modified it for long-distance flight. “I always considered my plane as a little ray of sunshine,” Corrigan said, “so now I put the name Sunshine on the plane’s engine.” He built and installed extra gas tanks as he was hoping to receive permission for a transatlantic flight.
