in the intermountain west he was a trailblazer in public relations in the early days of his career at gillham advertising his life has been filled with challenges such as publisher of the deseret news director of the LDS church communications department principal in gillham advertising and various civic and community activities ashtons communications career was one of innovator and pioneer as he helped forge he public relations industry in the intermountain west his career has followed in the footsteps of many other professionals such as lon richardson sr william S adamson nelson aldrich edwin dowell parry D sorensen jennings phillips david W evans arch madsen and G robert ruff 1 this thesis will examine the career of wendell J ashton as it began as it grew and as it blossomed through major communications advertising and public relations projects this study will reveal how ashton increased the status of public relations professionals in utah in the following ways 1 in the length and quality of his career ohnjohn C speer the role of david W evans in public relations counseling in the intermountain west masters thesis brigham young university provo utah 1985 pl 1 2 in the number of the clients and organizations he served and campaigns he organized 3 in comparison with his communications peers 4 in his career and life achievements 5 in his contributions to the professional and philosophical development of the budding profession of communications 6 in his management of the LDS church public communications department 7 in his management of the deseret news as publisher in analyzing these seven areas this thesis will show not only how he became a leader in the communications field in the intermountain west but also how ashtonashtonss early career as editor of the millennial star and as a reporter for the salt lake teieTeletelegramaramoram prepared him for the challenges he would later face in his professional life 2 statement of the problem the purpose of this study is to analyze ashtons early career and how it prepared him for communication management positions the study shows 1 how wendell J ashtons career in communications contributed to the development of communications counseling in the state of utah and within the LDS church 2 how ashtons early life and contributions prepared him for significant career and agency building counseling projects 3 how those contributions increased dramatically during his experience at gillham advertising 4 how he was able to use that experience to organize the churchs public communications department on a worldwideworld wide basis and 5 how he was able to bring his leadership experience and creativity to the deseret news to make it a more dynamic and credible publication 3 extent and limitations of the studestudyS this study examines wendell ashtons communications career and his contributions to the communications profession the study begins with ashtons birth in 1912 and continuing throughout his professional career the study will also analyze ashtons many contributions to the community through public service justification of the Sstudyscudy wendell J ashtons career is of historical interest as well as ofofferingering an opportunity to document the history of communications in the state of utah and in the LDS church ashtons professional career is composed of experiences that can be used as case studies for effective communication campaigns A study of his career in communications will also illustrate the development of the communications process within the LDS church his organization of the public communications department set in motion the beginning of a world wide communications effort to spread the church of jesus christ of latterlatterdayday saints gospel message to people around the world the organization of the worldwideworld wide communications department will provide a model that can be used by professionals involved with international communications 4 methods seven sources of historical information will describe how wendell J ashton rose to prominence in the communications field in the intermountain west and how he contributed to the growth of the communications field on a worldwideworld wide basis these sources are 1 unpublished statements articles and papers written by or about various professionals including papers and histories from wendell J ashton 2 R L polk city directories for salt lake city from 1903 through 1990 3 newspapers and other periodical articles about the various communications professionals studied 4 papers and documents from the deseret news and the newspaper agency corporation these papers will help document the sevenandseven and ahalfa half years that ashton served as the publisher as well as the contracts and minutes of the 1982 negotiations of the joint operating agreement between the salt lake tribune and the deseret news 5 5 papers memoranda and correspondence from the LDS public communications department that will show the organizational structure and departmental operation over the five years that ashton served as the director of the LDS churchs public communication department 6 articles books and papers written by wendell J ashton such as articles from the salt lake telegratelegram public relations campaigns written by ashton at gillham advertising and the Roberts presented information to the leadership of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in January of 1922 that fundamentally challenged the entire premise of their religious beliefs. New research shows that in addition to church leadership, this information was also presented during the neXt few months to a select group of highly educated Mormon men and women outside of church hierarchy. This group represented many aspects of Mormon belief, different areas of eXpertise, and varying approaches to dealing with challenging information. Their stories create a beautiful tapestry of Mormon life in the transition years from polygamy, frontier life, and resistance to statehood, assimilation, and respectability. A study of the people involved illuminates an important, overlooked, underappreciated, and eXciting period of Mormon history.

And congratulations on winning your first MLS Cup championship and for bringing the State of Utah its first professional sports title in almost 40 years. That's a pretty big deal. You can give them a round of applause for that again. I want to acknowledge the Senator from the great State of Utah, Senator Bennett, who is here. He is incredibly proud of this team—too tall to play soccer. [Laughter] I want to congratulate Dave Checketts for his leadership and for dedicating his career to expanding the world of professional sports. And, of course, I want to congratulate the players and coaches from Real Salt Lake. I know that this team had a pretty unlikely journey to get here. You qualified for the playoffs on the last day of the season with a losing record. [Laughter] That's cutting it a little close, guys. [Laughter] You beat your biggest rival, took down the defending champions on your way to the title game. And with the cup on the line, you held two of the game's biggest stars scoreless in regulation and went on to win in a shootout, all of which goes to show that in Major League Soccer, there's no such thing as a foregone conclusion. Now, you did it because, in the words of Coach Kreis—and I have to say this is one of the rare coaches that I see in these events who I think might be able to still play—[laughter]—he looks very fit.

LDS Church Archives, © Intellectual Reserve, Inc. A History of Mormon Cinema: Second Wave V 45 The Second Wave: Home Cinema (1929–1953) The Second Wave differed from the First in various respects. For instance, by the 1930s the global film industry was well past its primitive pioneer era, and, within Mormonism, the increased sophistication of Second Wave films reflects this progress. In addition, technical advances (principally sound, but also color) renewed enthusiasm about the medium, both generally and among the Latter-day Saints. While this optimism did propel institutional and independent Mormon filmmaking toward some major projects, the decade of the 1930s—and to a lesser extent the 1940s— has generally been described for its lack of Mormon film production. Such a perception, however, does not give full credit to changes and growth in underlying areas of Mormon cinema that created a sustainable cinematic culture that would last throughout the ensuing years. Indeed, the 1930s and 1940s were decades in which both the mainstream film industry and the LDS Church itself reinvented the relationship between Mormonism and cinema. Due to Hollywood’s adoption of the Hays Production Code and the aforementioned loss of Mormonism’s sensationalism, mainstream depic- tions of Mormonism changed radically to the positive in the 1930s.

He was the focus of the Knicks 70s, one of the best generation of Knicks players of all time. The New York Knicks retired Walt Fraizer's Jersey on December 15, 1979. Earl Monroe #15 next player on the list is Earl Monroe. He joined the Knicks after they won their first title, and helped the team win its second in 73.

Wight, Dean of The Graduate School. ABSTRACT This dissertation examines the social history of medicine in the Salt Lake Valley, Utah, from the late nineteenth to the mid-twentieth century. It contends that race and class played disproportionate roles in the creation and evolution of Progressive Era health reforms. White middle-class residents embraced new scientific theories about physical health to bring about much needed programs in public sanitation and vaccination, hospital care, welfare services for the poor, and workplace safety legislation—all of which became necessary as Utah experienced increased immigration, industrialization, and urbanization at the turn of the century. Although these programs sometimes became embroiled in religious disputes between Mormons (members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) and non-Mormon “gentiles,” after Utah statehood in 1896 and efforts by Mormons to Americanize, religious tension diminished to allow powerful whites to implement and unequally benefit from these programs.
