Too hot here in Texas! However, I have been very busy lining up an array of projects for fall and winter. I also attended a PRODUCTS few shows with the the 2016 IPMS convention in Columbia being one of the high points. I get easily inspired by the work of others and there was an abundance of outstanding work at this year’s Nationals. You guys are all outstanding modelers and that by itself gives us here at Squadron the incentive to provide you even more with the best products and service anywhere. I always look forward to sharing with you the latest and greatest new releases from Squad- ron. As we roll into autumn, we are introducing a brand new Squadron Signal Publica- tion (SS14037), Landing Craft, Air Cushion (LCAC), authored by John Gourley. In 1966 a Landing Craft Coordinating Group was assembled to discuss and draft specifi- cations for a new landing craft. The work resulted in the Patrol Air Cushion Vehicle (PACV) that saw service in the Vietnam War. By 1970 designs for an Amphibious Assault Landing Craft (AALC) were on the drawing board. These designs ultimately pro- duced the Landing Craft, Air Cushion, better known as the LCAC. It was a great show and I was fortunate to reconnect with customers and friends like I have done for the past 22 years. This year however, for the first time, I “observed” an increase in attendance of some very special conventioneers. It is these “friends of modelling” I wish to pay tribute to now. Over the years, I have seen them so many times. The poor women who are attached to a husband that has a severe case of affection to- wards plastic. She follows him peacefully at model shows but can’t hide the total disconcertment from her face. Not that she minds being there; but it’s a job and she has to do it. She’s a trooper about it and smiles if you make eye contact. She empathizes with her husband’s passion for the hobby and she lets him do his thing. She does not always understand why Howard needs another kit when he has 487 unbuilt models in the family garage - but she’s sure that it is a matter of importance to him because he told her so many times. She loves this man who in a way is an oversized child who never grew up and still gets excited every time Fine Scale Modeler hits the mail- box. He then reads it with big open eyes like a kid does when he or she follows his or her superhero jump from one page onto another, telling her passionately about the newest releases of the month and why he must have it. Usually a story will follow with an explanation that would justify the purchase, like when he was in the armed services and got close to that particular armor piece. Or a history lesson she heard a million times before and recognizes from the black and white military channel documentaries that he watches over and over. But he is her partner in life, so she takes one for the team each time and listens with unmeasured attention, trying so hard to prevent her eyes from glazing over. She knows she’s in total domination when it comes down to it and has hold of a long leash that she can manipulate whenever her model- ing man wonders off into uncontrollable styrene madness. Who are these lovable creatures, who day in and day out stand by us while we do what our instinct tells us to do? Building models or should I say “collect- ing” them. Who supports us in our hobby with a never ending patience and always allow the budget to be stretched another $20 to satisfy our cravings? Wives, girlfriends, family, or friends, they are an essential part of our enjoy- ment of this hobby. Without their support, how could this still be so fun? Myself, I’ve been blessed with a wife who does exactly all of the above. Who conceals her yawn when I talk about Messchersmitts and Focke Wulfs, who watches for the best deals and always finds something I’ve been looking for forever when I least expect it. Who learned the difference between an F-18 and an F-16, who taught herself what a rear instrument coaming, throttle quadrant, rudder pedal and Head Up Display is when I bring it up and who is extremely patient when I make a mess, spill paint on my new shirt or drag her to another convention. For these ladies I tip my hat. Thank you girls for letting us be boys, even if most of us look like Richard Depardieu on his worst day. Thank you for sticking with us so we can enjoy our wonderful hobby. I would like to close with one lady’s remark when asked if she supported her husband’s hobby. She said; “Well, he doesn’t smoke or drink, he’s house- broken and last but not least, I know where he is!” Jef Verswyvel 1:48 Scale Marking Options: US Army Air Force UC-78 s/n 42-58125, 1943 Sky King’s T-50 ‘Songbird’ 700 KITS LIMITED TO ONLY NEWNEW UC-78/JRC-1/T-50UC-78/JRC-1/T-50 ‘Bamboo‘Bamboo Bomber’Bomber’ US Navy JRC-1 BuNo 64464, 1943 Late 1930s, WWII era and beyond, Cessna-built commercial, twin-engined, low-wing monoplane and light transport (T-50) or military advanced trainer and utility aircraft (AT-17/UC-78 and JRC-1).
