To help rectify that, the 1980 typescript submitted for the degree of PhD from Edinburgh University has been reset and formatted in Microsoft “Word” and Arial 12pt as an easily readable font and then converted to a read-only PDF file for circulation. It is now more compact than the original typescript version and fully searchable. Some minor typographical errors have been corrected but no material published post-1980 has been added except in the postscript (see below). Pagination in the present version does not correspond to the original because of computerised resetting of the text. THESIS ABSTRACT (from the 1980 original version) Previously unused manuscript sources and printed sources form the basis for an examination of the motivations, tactics and interactions with existing institutions of the participants in the movement for reformation of manners. Their providential and patriarchal beliefs are highlighted within the 1688 to 1715 period, whose climate of uncertainty and fear were crucial to sharpening the reformers' sense of urgency to achieve a more effective enforcement of secular laws against immorality and profaneness and thus ensure England's survival against foreign and domestic enemies. Founding members of the First Society for Reformation of Manners in London are identified, as well as their allies among the Anglican religious societies and elsewhere. Opposition to the ad hoc reforming societies from the capital's judicial establishment is analysed. The movement's efforts against sexual immoralities, swearing and cursing, and Sabbath-breaking are catalogued, together with attempts to suppress Bartholomew Fair and London's homosexual population. Sermons preached to reformers of manners in London are catalogued and studied for the reformers' views on magistracy, the community and the family. The final chapter examines opinions about the movement held by civil authorities, the Anglican leadership and champions of the High Church party, since reformation of manners became an element in the 'rage of party' in church and state. The conclusion places the movement for reformation of manners as one strand composing 'country ideology', a pervasive historical attitude in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries decrying any unbalancing of the constitution of the commonweal whether by immoralities, hypocrisy or political expediency. 4 INTRODUCTION THE CONCEPT OF ‘MANNERS’ IN LATE SEVENTEENTH CENTURY ENGLAND The word 'manners' in late seventeenth century English usage connoted much more than social graces. Modern usage has long departed from the sociological meaning of 'manners' inherent in dicta such as William of Wykeham's 'manners maketh man'. But such an axiom would have been crystal clear to men seeking a reformation of manners in England after 1688. They would, ironically, have agreed with Thomas Hobbes in Leviathan (1651, chap XI) that 'manners' meant not merely 'decency of behaviour but those qualities of mankind that concern their living together in peace and unity'. The social fabric and each person's tangible estate within it depended on acknowledged codes of behaviour validated by the Christian religion's unimpeachable moral tenets. Good manners were synonymous with correct behaviour in this context and it was the divinely sanctioned role of the righteous magistrate, from the monarch down to the local justice of the peace, to maintain the standards of behaviour conducive to good manners. In a hierarchical society whose levels were linked by deferential obligations (subject to ruler, man to master, child to parent), corrupt manners could not be tolerated if the principle of social subordination was to survive intact. This was as true of the government of the household as of the government of the nation. Literature of the period abounded in the argument that unchecked corrupt manners such as blasphemy, drunkenness, prostitution or Sabbath-breaking contributed to social disharmony and the dissolution of the ties binding together families as well as communities.1 Toleration of deviant behaviour in any modern or 'liberal' sense was quite alien to patterns of thought in the late seventeenth century as expressed in

Walker This dissertation is a study of the loyalist Church of England clergy in the American Revolution. By reconstructing the experience and identity of this largely-misunderstood group, it sheds light on the relationship between church and empire, the role of religious pluralism and toleration in the American Revolution, the dynamics of loyalist politics, and the religious impact of the American Revolution on Britain. It is based primarily on the loyalist clergy’s own correspondence and writings, the records of the American Loyalist Claims Commission, and the archives of the SPG (the Church of England’s missionary arm). The study focuses on the New England and Mid-Atlantic colonies, where Anglicans formed a religious minority and where their clergy were overwhelmingly loyalist. It begins with the founding of the SPG in 1701 and its first forays into America. It then examines the state of religious pluralism and toleration in New England, the polarising contest over the proposed creation of an American bishop after the Seven Years’ War, and the role of the loyalist clergy in the Revolutionary War itself, focusing particularly on conflicts occasioned by the Anglican liturgy and Book of Common Prayer.

    467 JOHN BATTELY'S ANTIQUITATESS. EDMUNDIBURGI AND ITS EDITORS by FRANCISYOUNG IN 1745 the first history of Bury St. Edmunds, John Battely's AntiquitatesS. EdmundiBurgiadAnnum MCCLXXII Perductae(Antiquities of St. Edmundsbury to 1272; henceforth referred to as Antiquitates), appeared in print, half a century after it was left unfinished on its author's death. The publication of this early antiquarian account of a Suffolk town was a significant event for the historiography of the county, and the work was to become the foundation for all subsequent research on the life of St. Edmund and Bury Abbey. John Battely and his work have been undeservedly forgotten; largely because he wrote in Latin for a narrow academic audience. This article will examine why and how Battely wrote a history of Bur) why the work remained unpublished for so long, and the personalities that lay behind its publication in the mid eighteenth century. Antiquitateswas a product of the antiquarianism of the seventeenth century, acutely sensitive to the political and theological implications of Saxon and mediaeval history. Battely died in 1708, already celebrated as an antiquary despite having published nothing in his lifetime, apart from one sermon on I john 5:4. His manuscripts were inherited by his nephew, Oliver Battely, but it was Dr. Thomas Terry, Greek Professor at Christchurch, Oxford, who edited his AntiquitatesRutupinae(Antiquities of Richborough') in 1711. When AntiquitatesS. EdmundiBuigiwas published in 1745, it was printed bound together with a second edition of Antiquitates Rutupinae as the complete posthumous works of John Battely. Battely's work on Bury found itself overshadowed by the earlier work; richly illustrated with maps and engravings of archaeological finds, and fully indexed, AntiquitatesRutupinae was a work of scholarship that was deemed worthy of translation into English byJohn Dunscombe as late as 1774.

    3 Notes on parliaments visited Parliaments studied 3.1 This chapter provides a brief overview of the parliaments studied during the program in order to provide a context for the observations in Chapter 2. The notes are from the perspective of the committee’s interests and do not attempt to provide an overview of the parliaments themselves. There is obviously much more that could be said about each of the parliaments visited, but such comments would not reflect the experience provided by the study program. 3.2 As noted in paragraph 1.6 above, the committee was able to visit, observe and have discussions at the House of Commons and House of Lords in London, the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh, the Tynwald in Douglas, (Isle of Man), the National Assembly for Wales in Cardiff and the French National Assembly in Paris. The notes on these assemblies reflect information provided during discussions as well as documents provided by our hosts. 3.3 Three main factors influenced the decision to visit the four parliaments in the United Kingdom and one in France: a desire to compare practices and procedures with other parliaments sharing Westminster origins (The House of Commons, House of Lords, Scottish Parliament and National Assembly for Wales); an interest in learning how quite different parliamentary traditions address issues relevant to all legislatures, including scrutinising the Executive, use of parliamentary committees, communicating with the 34 STUDY PROGRAM 2006 public, procedures for conducting formal votes, how parliaments adapt themselves to societal changes (the Tynwald and the French National Assembly in addition to the parliaments in Britain); and time constraints imposed by the need to slot the visit into part of the Easter break (returning in time for the Budget sittings) and the sitting patterns of other parliaments.
