Contudo, os componentes vivos presentes em suas águas costeiras e neríticas são parcamente conhecidos em termos taxonômicos, biogeográficos e ecológicos. Embora constitua um dos principais grupos de predadores pelágicos, seja abundante e de dimensões relativamente grandes, o plâncton gelatinoso é normalmente subestimado nos estudos de plâncton. A classe Hydrozoa é um dos grupos de invertebrados gelatinosos mais bem representados e comuns no plâncton. Dentre os trabalhos sobre hidromedusas, somente alguns abrangeram áreas extensas da plataforma continental brasileira, embora coleções oriundas de campanhas oceanográficas, como as realizadas pelo Instituto Oceanográfico da Universidade de São Paulo (IO-USP), estejam disponíveis para estudo. O objetivo do presente é inventariar as espécies de hidromedusas oriundas de duas campanhas oceanográficas realizadas pelo IO-USP na plataforma continental entre Cabo de Santa Marta Grande (SC) e Cabo Frio (RJ) (Plataforma Continental Sudeste - PCSE), nos anos de 1991 e 2001: Sardinha 1 e PADCT 2. A composição da fauna foi analisada quanto à diversidade de espécies e distribuição geográfica. -

A revision of the genus Monocoryne was undertaken following analysis of peculiarities noted in earlier descriptions of the nominal species. Type specimens of Monocoryne gigantea from northern Norway and Monocoryne minor from South Africa were examined. In addition, non-type material from the Arctic Ocean, Antarctic Seas and the Kuril Islands was studied, and descriptions of species from Alaska and the Canadian Archipelago were investigated. A new diagnosis of the genus Monocoryne, provided here, was a necessary outcome of these studies. Most importantly, hydroids (in species of the genus) are colonial or solitary which differ from Bonnevie’s original diagnosis. The collection of solitary polyps is a result of the tenuous nature of the colonies, which tend to fall to pieces. Species of Monocoryne are found in Arctic, Antarctic and temperate waters of the northern and southern hemispheres, and the genus may thus be regarded as bipolar. Although recognized species of Monocoryne are quite similar morphologically, four of them are recognized here to be valid based on current evidence. FAUTIN his ancient phylum of mostly marine organisms is best known for its contribution to geomorphological features, forming thousands of square Tkilometres of coral reefs in warm tropical waters. Their fossil remains contribute to some limestones. Cnidarians are also significant components of the plankton, where large medusae – popularly called jellyfish – and colonial forms like Portuguese man-of-war and stringy siphonophores prey on other organisms including small fish. Some of these species are justly feared by humans for their stings, which in some cases can be fatal. Certainly, most New Zealanders will have encountered cnidarians when rambling along beaches and fossicking in rock pools where sea anemones and diminutive bushy hydroids abound. In New Zealand’s fiords and in deeper water on seamounts, black corals and branching gorgonians can form veritable trees five metres high or more. In contrast, inland inhabitants of continental landmasses who have never, or rarely, seen an ocean or visited a seashore can hardly be impressed with the Cnidaria as a phylum – freshwater cnidarians are relatively few, restricted to tiny hydras, the branching hydroid Cordylophora, and rare medusae. Worldwide, there are about 10,000 described species, with perhaps half as many again undescribed. All cnidarians have nettle cells known as nematocysts (or cnidae – from the Greek, knide, a nettle), extraordinarily complex structures that are effectively invaginated coiled tubes within a cell. -

Analyses of past zooplankton samples from a long-term monitoring program suggest that this non-indigenous species has been present in the eastern English Channel at least since 2007. Genetic analyses identified specimens as Eucheilota menoni based on nearly identical 18S ribosomal RNA gene, mitochondrial cytochrome oxydase subunit gene I (COI) sequences, and 16S Ribosomal RNA gene. -

Previous phylogenetic analyses show strong support for Hydroidolina monophyly, but the relationships between and within its subgroups remain uncertain. In an effort to further clarify hydroidolinan relationships, we performed phylogenetic analyses on 97 hydroidolinan taxa, using DNA sequences from partial mitochondrial 16S rDNA, nearly complete nuclear 18S rDNA and nearly complete nuclear 28S rDNA. Our findings are consistent with previous analyses that support monophyly of Siphonophorae and Leptothecata and do not support monophyly of Anthoathecata nor its component subgroups, Filifera and Capitata. Instead, within Anthoathecata, we find support for four separate filiferan clades and two separate capitate clades (Aplanulata and Capitata sensu stricto). Our data however, lack any substantive support for discerning relationships between these eight distinct hydroidolinan clades.
