The resort communities that make up the

Petoskey Area will captivate you from the

moment you first see them. Their lakeside

beauty and Victorian architecture set the

tone. Unique shops, where you’re often

greeted by the owner, will bring a smile.

And a relaxed pace presents a welcome

relief from the hustle and bustle of everyday

life. While they have much in common,

each of our communities also has its own

distinct personality. We hope you get a

chance to visit them all while you’re here. Petoskey is known for its beautiful setting along Little Traverse Bay and its charming Gaslight Shopping District. You’ll also find never-ending recreation. Name an outdoor activity, you’ll find it here. The question is never what to do, it’s what to do next. COMMUNITIES

Harbor Springs is a place where time slows down, inviting you to enjoy everything from swimming to dining, shopping to biking. The picture-perfect downtown is great for relaxing and watching boats in the harbor. The famous Tunnel of Trees always delights.

9 Boyne City wraps around Lake Charlevoix - voted second best lake in America by the readers of USA Today. There are no strip malls here. Just a great mix of independently owned shops and restaurants where you’re likely to be personally greeted by the owner.

Bay Harbor is a luxury waterfront community which includes an upscale shopping district, the award-winning Bay Harbor Golf Club and an amazing cultural center, the Great Lakes Center for the Arts. These amenities make it a world-class vacation destination. COMMUNITIES 11

Put yourself in a simpler, more refined time.

Walk through Victorian neighborhoods and

you can almost hear horse-drawn buggies

clattering down the streets. The Bay View

Association alone has nearly 500 cottages,

churches and inns on the National Register

of Historic Places. Museums chart our

history from the Odawa Indians through

the lumbering industry. Tribute is also paid

to Ernest Hemingway, who spent his early

summers here. It’s easy to see why. HISTORY 37

DAY TRIPS

Some of northern Michigan’s most popular attractions are within a short drive of the Petoskey Area. During your stay with us, you’ll want to leave some time to visit them, too. Mackinac Bridge mackinacbridge.org “Big Mac” is the 4th longest suspension bridge in the world. Stretching five miles over the Straits of Mackinac, it connects the Upper and Lower Peninsulas of Michigan and unites the communities of Mackinaw City and St. Ignace. A drive across the “Mighty Mac” should be done at least once.

Mackinac Island mackinacisland.org DAY TRIPS This historic, renowned destination where no cars are allowed is about a 16-minute ferry ride from either Mackinaw City or St. Ignace. Take a horse-drawn carriage tour or ride a bike 8.3 miles around the island on M-185. Visit Arch Rock, Point Lookout, and other attractions. Be sure to take home some world-famous Mackinac Island fudge. Mackinac State Historic Parks mackinacparks.com 35 miles from Petoskey in Mackinaw City is Fort Michilimackinac.
