Barriers to mainstream employment opportunities gave rise to multiple disability movements that challenged the social and economic framework which marginalized generations of people with disabilities. Using a critical analysis of disability in archival records, personal collections, government publications and a series of interviews, I demonstrate how demands for greater access among disabled people to paid employment stimulated the development of a new discourse of disability in Canada. Including disability as a variable in historical research reveals how family advocates helped people living in institutions move out into the community and rehabilitation professionals played an increasingly critical role in the lives of working-age adults with disabilities, civil rights activists crafted a new consumer- led vision of social and economic integration. Separated by different philosophies and bases of support, disability activists and allies found a common purpose in their pursuit of economic integration. iii The focus on employment issues among increasingly influential disability activists during this period prompted responses from three key players in the Canadian labour market. Employers embraced the rhetoric and values of disability rights but operated according to a different set of business principles and social attitudes that inhibited the realization of equity and a ‘level playing field.’ Governments facilitated the development of a progressive discourse of disability and work, but ultimately recoiled from disability activism to suit emergent political priorities. Labour organizations similarly engaged disability activists, but did so cautiously, with union support largely contingent upon the satisfaction of traditional union business first and foremost. As disability activists and their allies railed against systematic discrimination, people with disabilities lived and worked in the community, confronting barriers and creating their own circles of awareness in the workplace. Just as multiple sites of disability activism found resolution in the sphere of labour, the redefinition of disability during this period reflected a shared project involving collective and individual action. iv Acknowledgments I wish to extend my appreciation to an array of people who helped make this project possible.     September Accelerated Cure Project for MS 2017 Accelerating research towards a cure for multiple sclerosis Clinical Research – A Journey Toward Diversity Clinical trials are an essential part of the drug development process. Regulatory agencies such the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) use information gathered from clinical trials to decide if medicines are safe and effective. It is important to have ethnic diversity in clinical trials to better understand diseases, and the full impact of certain drugs. Different ethnicities can have unique responses to the same disease. Studies have shown that MS can be especially active in African Americans. The effectiveness of many drugs can also vary depending on the patient’s ethnicity, lifestyle, culture and genetic makeup. For example, about 50 percent of Asian patients and 75 percent of Pacific Islanders lack the enzymes required to activate Plavix (a blood thinner). Certain classes of hypertension drugs have recently been found to be less effective in African American patients. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), minorities account for fewer than 10 percent of patients enrolled in clinical trials. African American men are twice as likely as Caucasian men to die from prostate cancer, yet they represent just 4 percent of prostate cancer clinical trial participants. Suicide is one of the top three causes of death among Asian American women under 45 years of age, yet they represent just 1 percent of major depressive disorder clinical trial participants. And while the prevalence of diabetes among Mexican Americans and Puerto Ricans is more than double that of Caucasians, those groups combined represent just 4 percent of diabetes trial participants.

It uses the archival records of the two unions, relevant legislation, media records, personal collections, and interviews to explore how these two professional organizations became politicized, militant labour unions able to engage with the state and the trustees of boards of education. The Introduction situates the public education project within nation building in a capitalist-democracy and outlines the theoretical influences informing the dissertation. Chapter 1 follows the two unions during the 1970s as they developed into labour unions. The 18 December 1973 one-day, province-wide, political strike achieved the right to strike and established a unique labour regime for teachers. Chapter 2 examines the advance of the unions during the 1980s as they developed labour militancy. At the same time, neo-liberalism was ascending and the post-war social accord was coming to an end resulting in attacks on unions and cuts to social programs.
