This feeling of nationalism is as old as the Vedas, and was inculcated and nurtured by some ancient seers and saints. Foremost among them is Rishi Markandeya, whose imprint is not just found all over the Indian landmass, but also traverses all the way to Indonesia and Bali. Markandey is also unique among seers because he is venerated among all the mainstream Indian religious traditions, namely Vaishnavism, Shaivism, Devi cults and ascetic orders. From his birth in the Himalayas, to his severe penance in the dense jungles of the Western Ghats of peninsular India, to the ashrams along the Narmada and Ganges, and going upto the Eastern coast at Jagannath Puri, the Indian sub-continent is strewn with sites named after the great Rishi. The present paper attempts to list out some of these sites, and the accompanying geographical features, in an effort to highlight the immense accomplishments of the Rishi, encompassing fields as diverse as geology, hydrology, philosophy, herbal medicine, music, sacred chanting, goddess worship, astrology and horticulture.

  • Characterizing Regional Development in Vidarbha with Special Focus on Water Use
Understanding underdevelopment: Characterizing Regional development in Vidarbha With special focus on water use SJ Phaosalkar· Abstract: Vidarbha comprises of the eleven districts at the Eastern end ofMaharashtra state. The region is underdeveloped in absolute and relative sense. This has often led to a strongly held perception of deliberate state neglect in the minds ofpeople in Vidarbha. All attempt is made here to look at relative development of talukas within Vidarbha. We find that there is significant variation in per capita incomes across talukas in Vidarbha. This variation is associated with the differences in the nature and composition of t~e talukas, the crop mix obtaining in the talulm and most importantly on the extent of grollnd water use. Surface water use seems to have less influence on the income variations. While abundant unused ground water potential exists in some of the most backward talukas, their exploitation seems to be discouraged by a combination of both supply and demand factors. On ·the supply side, it is possible to argue that ground water exploitation is both uncertain and expensive. On the demand side, the associated factors are a weak demand for irrigation caused by a dominance of cotton cultivation that has been sustained all these years by artificial props ofthe monopoly cotton scheme, absence of understanding or skills for cultivation of alternate crops and possibly also a weak drive among the people. 10 Vnderstanding underdevelopment: Characterizing Regional development in Vidarbha With special focus on water use 1. Intt'oduction: . · This paper is based on the work done by author in the research project on "Water Use in Agriculture iI4 Vidarbha" under the IWMI-SRTT resear~h programme.

  • Stroke Is the Leading Cause of Death in Rural Gadchiroli, India a Prospective Community-Based Study
Stroke Is the Leading Cause of Death in Rural Gadchiroli, India A Prospective Community-Based Study Yogeshwar V. Kalkonde, MD, MSc; Mahesh D. Deshmukh, MSc; Vikram Sahane, MBBS; Jyoti Puthran, MD; Sujay Kakarmath, MBBS; Vaibhav Agavane, MBBS; Abhay Bang, MD, MPH Background and Purpose—Stroke is an important cause of death and disability worldwide. However, information on stroke deaths in rural India is scarce. To measure the mortality burden of stroke, we conducted a community-based study in a rural area of Gadchiroli, one of the most backward districts of India. Methods—We prospectively collected information on all deaths from April 2011 to March 2013 and assigned causes of death using a well-validated verbal autopsy tool in a rural population of 94 154 individuals residing in 86 villages. Two trained physicians independently assigned the cause of death, and the disagreements were resolved by a third physician. Downloaded from Results—Of 1599 deaths during the study period, 229 (14.3%) deaths were caused by stroke. Stroke was the most frequent cause of death. For those who died because of stroke, the mean age was 67.47±11.8 years and 48.47% were women. Crude stroke mortality rate was 121.6 (95% confidence interval, 106.4–138.4), and age-standardized stroke mortality rate was 191.9 (95% confidence interval, 165.8–221.1) per 100 000 population. Of total stroke deaths, 87.3% stroke deaths occurred at home and 46.3% occurred within the first month from the onset of symptoms. http://stroke.ahajournals.org/ Conclusions—Stroke is the leading cause of death and accounted for 1 in 7 deaths in this rural community in Gadchiroli.
