Hello Everyone and Happy 13th Sunday in Ordinary Time. Following the theme of Sacraments in this month’s Doodles & Ramblings, I will speak a little about my own experience with the Sacrament of Confirmation. To be honest I do not remember too much about my Confirmation experience. I do remember that I was a senior in high school when I was Confirmed. My home parish, at the time, had Confirmation year 1 for juniors and year 2 for seniors so it was a bit different from here at St. Peter. I remember we rotated catechists and 2 of our catechists were 2 seminarians. Having 2 seminarians (who are now both seasoned priests) and my pastor active in the Confirmation sessions was very good to have and had a positive impact on my vocation. Overall I believe that the sessions and Youth Ministry nights associated with my confirmation process did have a huge positive impact on my faith. I remember the process very well but for some reason the day itself of Confirmation is a blur for me. I was Confirmed in 2008 so maybe that is why (13 years ago). Unfortunately, I could not find any pictures from my Confirmation and neither could my mother so there is no picture of that day. Here is a drawing instead!

In the Gospel reading of this Sunday (Mark 5:21-43), Jesus commands Jairus’ daughter, “Little girl, I say to you, arise!” As we emerge from a time of crisis, Jesus invites His Church in Los Angeles to rise anew. With providential timing, the Archdiocese of Los Angeles has an occasion for such a new beginning: the 250th anniversary of the founding of Mission San Arcángel by St. Junípero Serra.

As proclaimed at each Mass this Sunday, Archbishop José H. Gomez has declared a Jubilee Year in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles beginning September 11, 2021 and concluding September 10, 2022. This “Forward in Mission” Jubilee celebration will be a special time of grace not only to remember the rich legacy of Catholic faith in this land, but above all, to revive the life of faith in our local Church through a fresh proclamation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the raising up of a new generation of disciples.

Not that others should have relief while you are burdened, but that as a matter of equality your abundance at the present time should supply their needs, so that their abundance may also supply your needs, that there may be equality. 2 Corinthians 8:13-14

This verse from today’s Second Mass Reading comes to life in our parish Missions of Mercy this weekend! We lift each other up by giving what we have. Religious Freedom Week Ends June 29

We continue to pray, reflect, and take action on religious liberty, both here in this country and abroad. The Church’s promotion of religious freedom expresses her solidarity with all people who seek the good and hope for fulfillment in the truth.

As Francis teaches: Hope speaks to us of a thirst, an aspiration, a Please pray for the souls of… longing for a life of fulfillment, a desire to achieve great things, things that fill our heart and lift our spirit to lofty realities like truth, goodness and beauty, justice and love… Hope is bold; it can look beyond personal convenience, the petty securities and compensations which limit our horizon, and it can open us up to grand ideals that make life more beautiful and worthwhile (Fratelli tutti, 55).

Have you read Fratelli Tutti yet? ’ encyclical letter provides a starting point for renewing our commitment to caring for our neighbor and a global society built on justice and the common good. A study guide is also available at USCCB.org.

EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP - RECOGNIZE GOD IN YOUR ORDINARY MOMENTS

Touching the Cloak of Christ Look to today’s Gospel and you’ll find one of the most arresting images in all of Scripture. Christ in a crowd, everyone clamoring for his attention, pressing against him. Several feet away, is a chronically ill woman, weak and desperate for help. She knows she doesn’t have a chance of getting his attention. She has no connections. She has no strength. All she can do is lift up her hand.

So that’s what she does. She reaches out.

There comes a time, or maybe several times, in each of our lives when we become this woman. We’re tired and we’re sick. Is it with sin? With fear? With anger? It doesn’t matter. Whatever it is, it’s made us weak, and we feel like we’ve run out of options. We’ve looked for help and come up empty. We’ve consulted friends and gotten nowhere. We’re lost in the crowd of life, unable to stick our heads above the pressing throng to wave for help.

And there is Christ, always passing by us. The hem of his cloak is never far from our grasp. We have no hope of a big miracle like the synagogue leader. We don’t even bother asking for that. But that cloak ... we can touch that cloak. That’s something we can do.

Do we do it, though? Do we have the confidence of that sick, beaten-down woman who knew so totally that healing was there for the taking? Or do we retreat back into the crowd, stumbling back home with our pain and our sinfulness? Reach out, friends. However, whatever, whenever — reach out. Christ will not fail you. — Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS ©LPi
