    America's Sweethearts Dir: Joe Roth, 2001 A review by A. Mary Murphy, Memorial University of Newfoundland, Canada The whole idea of America's Sweethearts is to have a little fun with the industry of film stars' lives, and the fact that their marriages, breakdowns and breakups have become an entertainment medium of their own. Further to this is the fact that not only does the consumer buy the product of stars' off-screen lives, but so (at times) do stars. Of course, part of the fun of this film is that it just happens to be populated by some very large careers, which makes for good box-office (and ironic) appeal -- with Julia Roberts, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Billy Crystal, and John Cusack as the front-line members of the cast. Everyone should be thoroughly convinced by now that Julia Roberts was born to play romantic comedy. Those liquid eyes and that blazing smile go directly to an audience's collective heart, and make it leap or ache as required. On the occasions when she steps out of her generic specialty, it's just an embarrassment (for example Mary Reilly [1996]); and reminds us that she is not a great dramatic actor -- the Academy Award notwithstanding. However, when Roberts stays within her limits, and does what she is undeniably talented at doing, there's nobody better. She's not the only big-name actress in America's Sweethearts, so she doesn't get all the screen time she's accustomed to, but she makes good use of her allotment. However, there are a couple of problems with the premise for her character, Kiki.

    The Evolution of Planet of the Apes: Science, Religion, and 1960s Cinema Amy C. Chambers Newcastle University Introduction “Three wise monkeys” see no evil, hear no evil, and speak no evil; they shield themselves from immorality and its temptations. Three injudicious orangutans turn a blind eye to anything that contradicts their religious dogma; they see no truth, hear no truth, and speak no truth. By rejecting science and restricting knowledge, the orangutans in Planet of the Apes (1968) have stunted the evolution of simian culture. This scene, which appears in the film’s central trial sequence, apes a recognizable folklore image and was initially shot as an on-set joke. Yet, the director, Franklin J. Schaffner, needed to lighten a dense dialogue sequence and chose to save the three (un)wise monkeys from the cutting room floor. Critics saw this visual pun as “a gambit for mass appeal” that inclined audiences “to laugh rather than grin at the irony” (Murf 1968, 6). But, by retaining this short sequence, audiences gain a metaphorical maxim that neatly encapsulates the film’s attitudes to institutions that disregard civil liberties and responsibilities. Using the lens of science and religion, Planet of the Apes allegorically critiques the restriction of rights enacted by the United States’ major religious, political, legal, and commercial institutions during the 1960s. Planet of the Apes tapped into endemic feelings of alienation from, and distrust of, the “establishment.” In a similar fashion to notable New Hollywood films of the late 1960s such as Bonnie and Clyde (1967), The Graduate (1967), and Easy Rider (1969), Planet of the Apes is structured around a complicated anti-hero, corrupt institutions, and a pervading hopelessness expressed through a disquieting, desolate conclusion.

    Short Review: “Beneath the Planet of the Apes” (1969) by Dr. John L. Flynn Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1969). 20th Century Fox, 94 min. Director: Ted Post. Producer: Arthur P. Jacobs. Screenwriters: Paul Dehn and Mort Abrahams. Cast: James Franciscus, Charlton Heston, Kim Hunter, Maurice Evans, Linda Harrison, Victor Buono, James Gregory, and Jeff Corey. In the first and best of the four sequels to “Planet of the Apes” (1968), Brent (Franciscus) is sent to find missing astronaut Taylor (Heston), and crash lands on the same planet where intelligent apes rule over savage humans. He is captured, but escapes to the Forbidden Zone with Nova (Harrison), followed by an angry army of gorillas bent on wiping man out for good. There, in the forgotten, subterranean ruins of New York City, Brent meets mutant humans who practice mind control and worship a doomsday bomb capable of destroying the entire planet. Tension mounts to a climactic and cataclysmic battle between ape and man deep in the bowels of Manhattan. While the satire of the original has been traded for some cool action scenes, a few key ingredients keep the production from being a straight adventure tale—most notably a tip of the proverbial hat to Walter M. Miller’s A Canticle for Leibowitz as a form of motivation for the mutant humans and their worship of the bomb. Harrison still looks good in her animal skins!
