As well as Memphis, who gave me space to ponder on our daily walks. 2 Abstract This collaborative doctoral project, in partnership with Museums Sheffield, examines a redevelopment project at Weston Park Museum from 2014-2016. This research addresses the question: “What is the relationship between adults’ curiosity, meaning-making and innovation, and museum space?” An ethnographic methodology was used including: 85 participant observation sessions; 9 interviews with 11 members of Museum Sheffield staff; a workshop with 13 members of Museum Sheffield staff; 130 observations of visitors in public gallery spaces; 70 write-draw submissions from visitors; and ongoing documentation of the museum redevelopment project. The collaborative nature of the research blurs the boundaries between researcher and research participants: museum staff contributing to the design and development of the research project, and the researcher contributing to the daily work of the museum. The findings show that space is made by all museum users. Therefore, the curiosity, meaning-making and innovation activities of staff, visitors and those in-between each impact upon how space is made. In turn, the type, intensity, duration and location of these various activities is influenced by the institutional form of the museum generally, and specifically that of Museums Sheffield. Institutional curiosity shapes how a museum acquires new information, how it empowers staff and how it engages audiences. Institutional form also influences how meaning is made in the museum. Additionally, the context of a particular museum or other institution, in this case Museums Sheffield, is part of the specificity inherent in vernacular innovation. This thesis builds three distinct contributions: a theory of institutional curiosity; the application of the concept of ‘professional meaning-making’ to a new context (i.e. the museum); and the identification of a new concept - vernacular innovation. At various points along the journey of a (metaphorical) datum - from production through processing, re-use and intersection with other data journeys - selected organisations and projects are brought into focus and empirical data about the socio-cultural values and practices shaping the life of data within that particular space are collected using a variety of qualitative data collection methods. These empirical data are then critically and thematically analysed in relation to the broader social context. This paper outlines the rationale for the data journeys approach prior to presenting initial findings from The Secret Life of a Weather Datum research project which applies the approach to explore the socio-cultural values and practices interacting with weather and climate data as they move through a variety of data infrastructures. The initial findings presented in this paper focus specifically on weather data production and climate science at Weston Park Museum Weather Station in Sheffield, UK; the Met Office (the UK’s national meteorological organisation); the Climatic Research Unit at the University of East Anglia, UK (a world leading climate research institute); and the Old Weather Project (a citizen science project involved in historical weather data recovery and rescue).

Abstract: In the face of financial disaster, Dr Lydgate attempts to share his concerns with his wife, Rosamund, in George Eliot's Middlemarch (1871). Rosamund's refusal to engage with the crisis, or to sympathise with her husband's despair, is repeatedly presented by Eliot as a preoccupation with inanimate, decorative objects: Rosamund 'turned her neck and looked at a vase on the mantelpiece'. 1 The mid- nineteenth-century novel increasingly explores what it means to own, collect and display objects, and how personal and public lives can be constructed and defined by 'things'. The inclusion of animal remains in funerary contexts was a routine feature of Anglo-Saxon cremation ritual, and less frequently of inhumations, until the introduction of Christianity during the 7th century. Animals were a fundamental and ubiquitous part of early medieval society, and their contribution to mortuary practices is considered to be multifaceted, reflecting their multiple roles in everyday life.
