Two-factor authentication can use anything from a text message to your phone to a token to a biometric like your fingerprint to provide enhanced account security. • Back it up: Protect your valuable work, music, photos and other digital information by regularly making an electronic copy and storing it safely. -

CERT-EU Security Whitepaper 17-001 DMARC — Defeating E-Mail Abuse Christos Koutroumpas ver. 1.3 February 9, 2017 TLP: WHITE 1 Preface E-mail is one of the most valuable and broadly used means of communication and most orga- nizations strongly depend on it. The Simple Mail Transport Protocol (SMTP) – the Internet’s underlying email protocol – was adopted in the eighties and is still in use after 35 years. When it was designed, the need for security was not so obvious, and therefore security was not incor- porated in the design of this protocol. As a result, the protocol is susceptible to a wide range of attacks. Spear-phishing campaigns in particular can be more successful by spoofing (altering) the originator e-mail address to imper- sonate a trusted or trustworthy organization or person. This can lead to luring the recipient into giving away credentials or infecting his/her computer by executing malware delivered through the e-mail. While raising user awareness on how to avoid e-mail fraud is recommended, the Verizon Data Breach Investigations Report indicates that more needs to be done. The DBIR report reveals that 30% of all phishing e-mail messages were opened by the recipients and with 12% clicked on the content and executed malicious code. The median time for the first user of a phishing campaign to open the malicious email is 1 minute, 40 seconds. The median time to the first click on the attachment was 3 minutes, 45 seconds. These statistics highlight the risk for an organization on the receiving end of spear-phishing e-mails. -

Tech support scammers may call you, enlist pop-up ads on your computer, or place ads for their "tech support company" to look credible and attempt a scam. They often gain control of your computer by asking you to give them remote access to your computer. Once they gain access, the scammer may pretend to run a diagnostic test of your computer. In reality, they are downloading malware, or other viruses, downloading sensitive information that was stored on your computer, or locking you out of your computer by downloading ransomware. The Order of Encryption and Authentication for Protecting Communications (Or: How Secure is SSL?)? Hugo Krawczyk?? Abstract. We study the question of how to generically compose sym- metric encryption and authentication when building \secure channels" for the protection of communications over insecure networks. We show that any secure channels protocol designed to work with any combina- tion of secure encryption (against chosen plaintext attacks) and secure MAC must use the encrypt-then-authenticate method. We demonstrate this by showing that the other common methods of composing encryp- tion and authentication, including the authenticate-then-encrypt method used in SSL, are not generically secure. We show an example of an en- cryption function that provides (Shannon's) perfect secrecy but when combined with any MAC function under the authenticate-then-encrypt method yields a totally insecure protocol (for example, ¯nding passwords or credit card numbers transmitted under the protection of such protocol becomes an easy task for an active attacker). The same applies to the encrypt-and-authenticate method used in SSH. On the positive side we show that the authenticate-then-encrypt method is secure if the encryption method in use is either CBC mode (with an underlying secure block cipher) or a stream cipher (that xor the data with a random or pseudorandom pad). Thus, while we show the generic security of SSL to be broken, the current practical implementations of the protocol that use the above modes of encryption are safe. 1 Introduction The most widespread application of cryptography in the Internet these days is for implementing a secure channel between two end points and then exchanging information over that channel. -

Far from being merely a “social engineering” issue, fake email is a direct result of technical issues with the way email is implemented: It lacks a built-in authentication mechanism making it all too easy to spoof senders. However, this problem is also amenable to a technical solution, starting with the email authentication standards DMARC, SPF, and DKIM. For the purposes of this report, Valimail used proprietary data from our analysis of billions of email message authentication requests, plus our analysis of more than 3 million publicly accessible DMARC and SPF records, to compile a unique view of the email fraud landscape. Executive Summary Call it a case of locking the back window while leaving the front door wide open. A year into the pandemic and amid successful attacks on GoDaddy1, Magellan Health², and a continuous stream of revelations about the SolarWinds “hack of the decade,” cyber-attackers are proving all too successful at circumventing the elaborate defenses erected against them³. But despite billions spent on perimeter and endpoint security, phishing and business email compromise (BEC) scams continue to be the primary attack vectors into organizations, often giving threat actors the toehold they need to wreak havoc. In addition to nearly $7.5 billion in direct losses each year, advanced email threats like the kind implicated in the SolarWinds case⁴ suggest the price tag could be much higher. As corroborated in this analysis from the Agari Cyber Intelligence Division (ACID), the success of these attacks is growing far less reliant on complex technology than on savvy social engineering ploys that easily evade most of the email defenses in use today. Security, Encryption, and Certificates FAQ Overview In Security Center 5.4, several new capabilities will be added that further strengthen the security of the platform itself, as well as the privacy of data. The aim is to prevent unauthorized access to stored and transmitted messages and data, as well as prevent attacks through the use of stronger encryption and authentication mechanisms. With growing demand for privacy, new capabilities in Security Center 5.4 will strengthen Genetec’s position and overall value proposition. This FAQ addresses some of the most common questions in relation to the new capabilities of Security Center: Encryption, Authentication, and Digital Certificates. These concepts are first described in generic terms; the FAQ then outlines how these new measures are used within Security Center 5.4. Encryption vs. Authentication vs. Authorization What is the difference between encryption, authentication, and authorization? Encryption is used to encrypt data so that only authorized users can see it. Authentication determines whether an entity is who they claim to be, eg. in the case of an individual, it is usually based on a username/password combination. Authentication does not actually say anything about what someone is authorized to do or has the right to do. o Client-side authentication uses username/password combinations, tokens (dual authentication), and other techniques. o Server-side authentication uses certificates to identify trusted third parties. Authorization is the function of specifying the rights, eg. defining the access rights someone has over a set of recourses such as a private data, computing resources, or an application. When users log into a Security Center system, what they are allowed or authorized to do depends on the set of privileges assigned to them by administrators.
