For all children learning is a process of building knowledge and understanding, not unlike the process of building a wall. In both cases a secure foundation is essential. Whilst a wall will usually remain standing when cracked or with some cement or bricks missing, it would become more and more wobbly if building continued. Once a wall is repaired by replacing the missing bricks and mortar, building can continue with confidence that the finished structure will remain standing. Similarly, individual tuition provides the perfect opportunity to identify gaps and fill in the missing knowledge and understanding. The teaching can be adapted to the style and pace best suited to the individual child, giving them the confidence to succeed and equipping them with the skills needed for success in school. For further information on specialist tuition in mathematics, reading or spelling for pupils in school years 2-8 please call (01243) 786976 or email [email protected]

The average rainfall I have recorded over fifteen years is 834 mm (33 Inches) last year saw a staggering 1223 mm (49 inches). I appreciate if your house was one of the few affected by flooding nothing I can write here is any comfort at all. There is always more we can do and rest assured we will not sit back and say ‘that cannot happen again for a few years’ There will continue to be tough financial times ahead, both County and District levels of local government are continuing to make cut backs. I am always rather sceptical when someone in these organisations tells me they have saved x millions of pounds, I prefer to see it as ‘stopped wasting it’ Your Parish Council is good shape going into the New Year. It is more important than ever that local people and organisations engage with parish councils and other local organisations. From everyone on Bosham Parish Council all the best for 2013. I was accompanied by Rev. Jan Emerson (Chairman Monday Club), Carol Bishop (Treasurer Transport Committee) and Peter Sweet, former Transport Committee chairman. The occasion marked the end of last year’s Southern Co-Op’s Community Support Card scheme in which both the Bosham Monday Club minibus and the Cobnor Activities Centre Trust were beneficiaries. In October 2011 the scheme was re-launched at the Bosham Sailing Club and I am very grateful to L to R David West and Paul Richards Phil Cotman, manager BSC, for hosting and to the Southern Co-Operative for organising that event. I would also like to record my appreciation to the Southern Co-Operative for adopting the minibus as one of last year’s local charities. Furthermore I am indebted to those Co-Op customers who, through the use of their green Community Support Cards in both Bosham shops, contributed to the fantastic final sum. The current minibus is now a year old and this welcome injection of funds will go towards its operating costs. I know I speak for those passengers who L to R Fiona Greenlees, Rev Jan Emerson, Paul rely on its weekly journeys and social outings that the minibus together with Richards, David West, Carol Bishop its team of volunteer drivers and supporters, provides a valuable and welcome social service to the local community and is one which they greatly appreciate. If anyone has a couple of hours to spare a month, and would like to drive a lovely 12-seater minibus with its friendly clientele then please contact me for more details. Emperor Way obviously plays a very important part in many people’s lives and we have been encouraged by the number of people from beyond Fishbourne who wish to be involved. The next stage in building up our evidence for a Permanent Right of Way to be established is to find out the various reasons why people use Emperor Way. For many, this will be as a safe means of travel to school or to work. For elderly people who live alone, it offers a safe and manageable walk to Tescos or to visit friends – possibly the only time they go out. For young families, it offers a chance to walk together with children learning safely to ride on their bikes. For people recuperating from illnesses it offers a “round the block” trip which is within their current limitations ...... What does Emperor Way mean to you? If you haven’t already done so, please tell us. It doesn’t have to be an essay! Just a list of reasons or one paragraph will be fine! Please send to me at [email protected]

New local dance classes for adults’ keep body and mind active. Dance is terrific for strengthening muscles, encouraging concentration, co-ordination and confidence. Last year Angela Watkins introduced contemporary dance to local children and was often approached by mothers interested in taking a dance class or two. Local options were limited, so Dance Innovation has launched classes in classical ballet, contemporary and tap dance solely for adults. If you have considered returning to dance or enjoy pilates - these classes are for you. Classes commence 30th January, and a free taster session is always on offer at The Fishbourne Centre - booking essential. Dance Innovation also run Contemporary Dance for Juniors (10 years and up) on Tuesday evenings and Tap for Juniors (6 years and up) on Saturday mornings. Book now for your chance to join in the fun. .9 Winter Fishing Report by Andrew Hayward The winter fishing season has been superb this year. Cod and Whiting appeared during October and November was an excellent month for both. I have seen good catches of Cod with a few special fish over 25lbs. The really big Cod do seem to be more in quantity this year and this suggests that commercial fishing limitations, particularly in the North Sea, are in fact working. November and December is a great time for boat fishing in our area around the Nab and Eastern Solent approach if the weather allows us to get out. The cod move into our waters from the deep sea and wrecks to feed up on smaller fish, shellfish and crabs that are plentiful inshore where they have fattened up during the summer. The focus for fisherman is on Cod but other big fish move inshore as well. There is always the possibility of a good sized Pollock, Bull Huss or Bosham channel at sunset on a calm November’s evening a supersized Bass. During November I managed to find my best Bass to date (pictured) which went just over 10lbs. Some huge Conger Eel are also on the hunt for food at Andy with a Bass this time of year and can become a pest for anglers targeting Cod. There are some real monster Eels around and it can be disappointing when and angler thinks he has the Cod of a lifetime and finally after a real battle a giant Eel appears on the surface. When boat fishing for Cod you need big baits that will create a scent in the water. Cuttlefish is now the bait of choice to entice a Cod although big fish bait like half a mackerel or Whiting can also work well. Whiting have been reliable and easy to find from the boat and also plentiful off the local beaches, especially during night fishing and we have found some good sized fish this year. Whiting are smaller members of the Cod family and are good to eat when fresh. Often when we catch Whiting we find them stuffed full of Sprat like fish which often fall out of their mouths when they come aboard. Clearly there is a good food supply in our waters during winter which brings all these predator fish in. The water temperature in the harbour drops significantly in the winter months and becomes noticeably colder than the sea water temperature out towards the Nab, the difference can be several degrees. The harbour is fairly desolate of fish during the winter months and I never bother to fish the harbour until at least May. The harbour is very beautiful however during the winter months and full of migrating birds. I regularly see the Seal, even during the winter, usually roving around the Winner Bank near the harbour entrance. A few Whiting in the net

.10 The Aldingbourne Trust The Trust is an enterprising charity based in West Sussex which supports adults with learning disabilities to have the same opportunities as everyone else to live independent lives. This year we launched our £4m Fundraising Appeal and were thrilled to welcome over 3,500 people to the Aldingbourne Country Centre to enjoy our Family Fun Day. It was an amazing start to our Appeal and we raised over £17,000. These funds will be put towards the expansion of the Trust’s current facilities, including larger conference facilities, cafe and shop which will help to produce an income to fill the anticipated shortfall in Government funding over the next few years and provide additional development opportunities and paid work for adults with learning disabilities. We are always looking for new opportunities, motivated individuals, organisations and corporate partners to offer their support to help us reach our target. As a Corporate Partner of the Aldingbourne Trust you would receive a number of unique benefits such as tailor made packages which could include the use of the conference facilities; corporate team building events with full use of our facilities and training for your staff delivered by Powerful Trainers who all have a learning disability themselves. Match Funding is becoming an increasingly popular way of companies demonstrating their Corporate Social Responsibility with companies often capping the amount at £500 per employee per annum. We have been delighted to receive some really generous donations from individuals and businesses in West Sussex and have had some fantastic support at numerous events. This year we are planning lots more fun for people of all ages. During Fundraising February we would love to support people to host a coffee morning, dog walk, afternoon tea, cinema night, dinner party, valentine’s party or anything else in which they can organise to get together with friends and raise money for The Aldingbourne Trust. On March 30th we will be hosting a Family Fun Day at the Aldingbourne Country Centre where we are delighted to be welcoming Peppa Pig, Animal Magic, Owls 4 U and many other fabulous attractions. On 26th April we are organising a Bingo Night and in May, July and October we have some amazing Sponsored Walks and Bike Rides that people can sign up to. Sign up to www.acrossthedivide.com Please register the Aldingbourne Trust as your chosen charity. Cycle 100km from London to overnight on 12th July or enjoy 100km cycle ride around all the spooky sites of London as a Halloween Special on 25th October . Southbourne Lions are delighted with their highly successful Carol Float collections during December. They thank those who helped to fill the buckets up to a record sum of £3624 In addition to the donors, the Lions greatly appreciated the valuable assistance given by the many volunteers who joined them with the house-to-house collections, together with with others who provided the various ‘behind the scenes’ services which enabled the Carol Float activity to function efficiently. .15 Friends of Old Bridge Meadow Thanks are due to the local residents who, concerned about a distressed cormorant with an apparently damaged wing that they found on the Meadow recently, arranged for it to be collected and taken to the Brent Lodge Wildlife Hospital. On examination no injury was found, but it was very weak and thin and sadly died the following day. Although it was too late to save this particular bird, Brent Lodge at do amazing work in rescuing and restoring local wild birds and small mammals, and are entirely dependent financially on contributions from the general public. Mainly coastal seabirds, cormorants increasingly venture inland to find fish in deep water, but the shallow millstream that flows through the Meadow was inhospitable for its needs. They dive deeply to find flat-fish from the bottom of a pool, and can remain under water for up to a minute. Like swans, it is an effort for these big birds to take flight and they fly low initially before becoming airborne. They can’t do this with the extra weight of soaked plumage, and while resting have developed a habit of stretching their large wings out on either side so that air circulation dries the feathers more quickly in preparation for flight. You can see them often in this characteristic pose, perched on the rocks in the centre of the Slipper Pond at Emsworth. Possibly our Bosham visitor who appeared to have an injured wing was endeavouring to recover from constant drenching rain, as well as disorientated and suffering from malnutrition.

He was the grandfather of Agatha Christie and he married Margaret, a niece of Richard Kelsey, in April 1863 at Westbourne. Richard Kelsey was a Prinsted land owning farmer and records show that he owned a number of plots of land from the Manor House to the Main Road and in the 1861 census had 161 acres employing 8 men and 3 boys. In 1866 he sold a parcel of land identified as Homefield, to Nathaniel Frary Miller and this became Fraryhurst. Nathaniel died aged 47 on 9th May 1869 in the Parish of Westbourne, but remember that Southbourne did not exist at this time and Prinsted, Lumley and Nutbourne were all part of Westbourne until 1878 when St. John’s Church was consecrated. Nathaniel was buried on 11th June 1869 in Green-Wood Cemetery, Brooklyn, New York. The 1841 to 1871 censuses show Richard Kelsey and his relatives as living in Prinsted next to a school, which would indicate the Manor House, next to Long Meadow which was a boarding school. Richard Kelsey (the first People’s Warden at St. John’s Church) died in 1879 and both his sisters, Margaret and Frances Kelsey, are listed as living in Fraryhurst in 1881, and only Frances in 1891. Margaret Miller (nee West) moved to Ealing, and various members of her family lived with her from 1881. The 1911 Census, records Agatha Christie, aged 20, living with her step grandmother at 99, Uxbridge Road, Ealing. In her autobiography Agatha describes Margaret as an intelligent feisty woman on which she based her Miss Marple character. Did Nathaniel and/or Margaret ever live at Fraryhurst isn’t proved but we know she owned it until 1909 and her cousins lived there after she moved to Ealing. It was sold in 1909 to Mr Lucas for £1537 which included outbuildings, offices, garden and orchard. In July 1918 Margaret, Muriel and Hope Ricardo leased Fraryhurst and then bought it in 1919. The three sisters lived at Fraryhurst for 40 years, and during the mid 1950’s the orchard was divided and sold as individual plots. When Muriel died Fraryhurst was sold in 1958. This research started when I asked about the beautiful stained glass window in St John’s. No one seemed to know so that set me off on a mission and I am really pleased I now have an answer. My thanks to David Holman for his assistance with land registry research. .17 Fishbourne WI Report by June Leech Into February already – one or two flowers actually in bud or perhaps more by wishful thinking than practicalities – flowering. The WI is of course in full flower and never short on practicality, this can be seen by looking at the WI home of learning and creativity Denman College in Marcham, Oxfordshire. Denman has hundreds of courses of every sort including hands on practical, lifestyle, craft and creativity, including music, art and needlework. It may have been forgotten or possibly not known that, during the last war the Lord Privy Seal at that time was declared to be confident that the WI ladies had a talent for boosting morale and for cheerfully ‘carrying on regardless’ and were indeed very practical, so he urged them to help with various war efforts – including distributing rose hip syrup or cod liver oil to children, promoting the diphtheria immunisation programme, to name but a few, and they were asked to raise thousands of pounds for National Savings etc. You can see that there is a large group of women who uphold the ‘can do’ tradition – even making jam ! If you feel interested or only curious, you could make a start at local level where new friends can be made, new connections forged, listen to talks, go on outings, have fun times and support causes that need more help or publicity, there are all sorts of possibilities. February will be an exciting month for Fishbourne WI, as it is the 90th anniversary of the foundation of our group, a special tea party with invited guests, a concert with music, poetry and humour, as well as many other activities; this will be reported in the next Village Magazine. .18 Bosham Neighbourhood Plan What is good about Bosham? What is bad about Bosham? What makes Bosham good to live and work in? What pressures affect our area now or in the future? What needs to change? Do you care about how Bosham develops over the next 5-10 years? Map showing the area the Neighbourhood Plan will cover The Parish Council wants to prepare a Neighbourhood Plan which: · based on what the residents in Bosham Parish want · sets out a clear strategy on, amongst other matters, how much new built development is required and where it is to be located. The plan will seek to protect and enhance the features and landscape setting that makes Bosham distinctive. The plan will also cover improvements to roads and public rights of way, community facilities, public transport, drainage, tourism, services, open spaces as well as sites for new homes. At this preliminary stage we need to know what you want in the plan, and how important these issues are to you. Please come to an exhibition to tell us your views Where: Bosham Village Hall, Walton Lane When: Friday 22 February, 5pm to 7pm. And Saturday 23 February, 10am to 1pm. Alternatively, please email your thoughts to [email protected] The Parish Council and the Bosham Association both support the Neighbourhood Plan. It’s important we have one. If we don’t prepare our plan under the new Localism Act, the Council will impose one on us. At the same exhibition there will also be an opportunity to give your views to the Chichester District Council on the Conservation Area which covers a part of the old village.

I swore never again! But no, I’ve succumbed to the promise of bliss and fulfilment. Worse, this time was oh sooo good, made me feel great. Which only re-enforces the terrible need. I’ve tried really hard to kick it but I just can’t resist. I have thought of getting help, but the idea of standing up in a room full of strangers and saying ‘My name is Phil and I’m a boat jumble addict’ is too hard to bare, so I shall continue to suffer quietly along with my sadly afflicted friends and many other poor souls. However I did buy this year’s antifouling cheap. And some disposable paint brushes. And some sanding discs. And with the cost of getting there and the entry fee it only cost me slightly more than going to a shop. The job was to carve memorial initials and dates low down on the end of a pew in the Church. High tide, nowhere to park, so, nice day, walked down carrying bag of tools. Marked off two guidelines lying awkwardly on the floor with ear rasping on the cold floor, so that I wasn’t blocking my own light and I could focus the bifocals. Laid out chisels, about to mark out first letter – ‘Oh B****r’ I’d left paper with details at home. That’s when I remembered where I was. My apologies to any sightseers who may have heard this mysterious and mournful exclamation rising up from the deserted depths of a gloomy interior. Hope it didn’t give you nightmares. Phil. -- Think you’ve read this before? Well you have, it’s the first letter from a garden workshop and I dragged it up as a celebration of, to my surprise, five years worth of letters from an increasingly decrepit workshop. The Levesen report could get me into trouble, breakfast meetings have been full of the recriminations I could face should I publicly defame my beloved’s character, but I can’t resist telling you that she forgot our wedding anniversary yet again, daughter’s wedding the day before being the excuse. I remembered and gained a solitary brownie point, no more and it didn’t last to bedtime. The wedding went off very well; a year’s worth of planning paid off. The bride arrived in a bright red Ferrari with matching red wellies. Not sure why she needed wellies in a Ferrari but she swiftly changed into red shoes which also matched the car and her voluminous red petticoats under the ivory full dress. The groom was resplendent in a quiet lounge suit. A consequence of the wedding was the eleven house guests we bedded down in our tiny abode, when they all wanted to shower at once the water system protested with numerous airlocks and spurts of cold water, spent the rest of the week sorting it out, only defeated by one problem. She, the family’s ears, told me there was water cascading from somewhere to somewhere in the upstairs shower room. Armed with my new hearing aids/nag valves, I agreed but couldn’t find the fault, rushed around frantically turning off stopcocks and pumps, checking every tap in the house, even the hose outside and dashing round to the front of the house to check overflows. It was beyond me, still had the sound of rushing water and conceded.Time to call Angus, designer of the complicated organ pipe style plumbing. He heard the rushing water as he came through the door, dashing past an offered coffee pounding up the stairs. I expect you will say it’s a tall story, but it was, sadly, absolutely true, both Hazel and I missed it after repeated exhausting visits to the shower room, but he of the younger ears found it straight away,’ twas Hazel’s electric toothbrush vibrating away, amplified by it’s china mug . .25 Chichester Harbour The 2013 issue of the Chichester Harbour News will be available from the end of January. This annual magazine contains a wealth of information on the harbour. Following an introduction from the Director, Siún Cranny, the 84-page magazine contains articles on the 100th anniversary of the classic Sunbeam sailing boats, a feature on planning issues in the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and ideas for local walks. Three local people are interviewed about their harbourside careers. Anyone who works around the harbour will at some time have had someone say to them ‘How did you get that wonderful job?’ The three including Jesse Loynes from Arbor Yachts based at Thornham Marina, explains how it took hard work and training combined with a bit of luck to get their dream job. Two teenagers were challenged to try something new during their school holidays. Jo Gilson and Louisa Raby report back on their summer holidays trying stand up paddle boarding, photography, kayaking and more. In addition the Harbour News contains useful information such as tide tables, navigation guidance, a guide to harbourside villages and a directory of local marine businesses. The Harbour News is distributed free of charge and can be picked up from the Harbour Office, Bosham Walk Art & Craft Centre or the Library in South Street, Emsworth.

They choose to come here as there is little disturbance or pollution and most importantly an abundant supply of food. The mud may look grey and slimy to us, but it is packed with food for our feathered friends. Their different beak shapes mean that everyone can share happily. Waders, such as Curlew, Godwits, Redshank and Dunlin, probe with their long beaks in the mud for small marine animals like worms, small shellfish and crabs. The plover family of waders pick their food from the mud surface and Turnstones find theirs under seaweed and pebbles. Shelduck sift the surface of the mud for tiny snails. Other birds feed on plants growing on the mud; Brent geese and Wigeon eat green algae and Eel grass; Coot and Mute Swans are also vegetarians. Others are fish-eaters. Terns dive from a height whilst Cormorants and Red-breasted Mergansers feed from the water surface and Herons and Little Egrets stand and fish in the shallows. Join one of our bird related events this month to learn more about our Harbour Birds. Photography We are now three quarters of the way through this project and amazingly have collected over 1500 photos. We are continuing to collect photos until the end of March 2013, so do send in any photos you take to [email protected] along with the date they were taken and a short caption. Consultant urologist James Hicks knows prostate problems might not be the easiest thing to talk to your doctor about, “I can understand why men shy away from issues with their prostate. But there are blood tests we can carry out that will determine whether a man has a low or high risk of something like prostate cancer. It’s called the Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), and it’s a very helpful test. With any disease, early detection has to be the biggest advantage”. Despite more than 40,000 new cases of prostate cancer being diagnosed each year, the disease is still rarely talked about in public. As Mr Hicks puts it: “The biggest challenge is to not only to get men to spot symptoms, or to see their GP, but to talk about it openly. It’s nothing to be ashamed of.” The PSA test is a blood test that measures the level of PSA (prostate specific antigen) in your blood. PSA is made by the prostate gland, and some of it will leak into your bloodstream depending on your age and the health of your prostate. • If the level of PSA in your blood is raised, this may mean you have a prostate problem, not necessarily cancer. • If you are over 45 and have a family history of prostate cancer it is advisable to have a PSA test. • A PSA test may find cancer at an early stage when treatments could be of benefit. • The PSA test is not wholly reliable and can miss cancer and provide false reassurance. • A one-off test is not reliable and extra tests may provide further important information. People who come to the Hall for classes or talks are always impressed and some have commented that it’s a shame more people don’t enjoy this visual feast. So this year we will be hosting a fund raising Daffodil Day, on Sunday 17th March, from 11am to 4pm. That we are celebrating the Welsh national flower on St. Patrick’s Day has generated a few wry comments, of course, and perhaps this will enhance the appeal of the day. There are many different varieties of daffodils planted in the grounds, with varying flowering periods, and I just hope that we’ve picked the right weekend for most of the daffodils to be at their peak. After the long winter months, it will be an uplifting sight. Let’s hope it’s a fine, dry day; but even if it’s not, the daffodils will still be beautiful – and there’ll be tea and cake! There will be a £3 entrance fee to The Hamblin Trust. Sue Attridge

.31 St Peter Project Fundraising Campaign We are delighted to tell everyone that the fund-raising total has grown well over the last month, the total is now £38,700 this does include the gift aid money that has been claimed. This means since last writing we have raised another £5055. It is looking possible that we may even be able to start to build toward the end of this year. We need to keep the momentum going now and not run out of steam! There are grant applications pending and Gillian Ellis is beavering away trying to meet the varying criteria. David Geering is putting together the documents required to go to tender in the next few months. So we are all feeling more optimistic. In December there was a Harpsichord Concert, Carol Singing in the streets and pubs around Fishbourne , donations for decorated Christmas Trees , a raffle organised by Funnyfish , and some money from the fundraising tips – which have added to the grand total. .32 Centre + Glebe House We already have a few pets at Glebe House but the residents have decided they would like a few chickens. They want to see them hatch so we are going to have an incubator, specifically designed with a viewing window, so that residents can see the magic moment the chicks are born. The eggs are supplied just 2 – 3 days from hatching, so we won’t have to wait long. This has created a great deal of excitement among the residents as many remember keeping chickens during the war. A Quiz Evening is being held on 1st March to raise funds for our new Chicken House. The next problem was where to keep them so we were really pleased to find that the local Apuldram Centre for people with learning disabilities, (www.apuldram.org) could sell us a chicken run and house. They will not only make it but will come and assemble on our site. The Quiz evening is 1st March at 7pm at Glebe House, Stein Road, Tickets £5 includes ploughmans supper. To book your place, Tel 01243 379179 Karen Barber, Activities Co-ordinator, Glebe House Military Aviation Museum The Aviation Museum opens it’s doors after winter refurbishments on February 1st. Open 7 days a week from 10am. In February we close at 4-30pm (last admission at 3.30pm) and from March 1st close at 5-30pm (last admission at 4-30pm). Tangmere Military Aviation Museum is situated in a corner of the old RAF Tangmere airfield, famed for its illustrious service from 1916 through to the post-war years. It was opened by a group of aviation enthusiasts in 1982 to promote public awareness of the ’s military aviation heritage, educate present and future generations in military aviation and serve as a memorial to airmen and airwomen who gave their lives in the service of this country. The Museum is home to an impressive display of historic aircraft and a unique collection of aviation memorabilia stretch- ing from the First World War through to the Cold War. Amongst the many attractions, are numerous interactive displays and several aircraft simulators for visitors to experience. There is something for all members of the family to see and do. Marlet Sword and Morris Men The Club shows the Morris every Wednesday evening during the summer in towns and villages of West Sussex. The Club also attends meetings of the Morris Ring held in various locations throughout England, and has taken part in many folk festivals in Europe. By doing so, it has helped to keep alive this uniquely English tradition, a part of our heritage that can be traced back through Chichester’s archives to an account of Morris Dancers in North Street in 1618. The men enjoy the dancing and the fellowship of the club. New members are always welcome, and anyone who is interested in having a go, should contact the Bagman (by email [email protected] or phone 01243 263829). Winter practices are held every Wednesday evening at the Southbourne Club, New Road, Southbourne, Emsworth PO10 8JX. All newcomers welcome, where casual clothing is the norm – just bring a couple of white hankies.

.34 Woodland News Despite atrocious weather we’ve kept working most of the time and as always each job has brought it’s own challenges. Recently we removed a large oak with a hollow trunk. All was going well until we hit a large overwintering colony of bees. After several phone calls and considerably more stings, we decided to try and remove the section of tree containing the nest in one piece. Sounds simple but at 40 feet off the ground, with a fair few angry bees it was quite a challenge. After blocking the bees into the cavity we cut through below the nest and eventually safely lowered the four foot section to ground level. We left the job with the tree safely removed and the owner with a unique, garden feature – their very own natural beehive. For all of us, trees have many benefits to offer. Besides providing wood, they help improve our local environment and provide habitats for wildlife. Also through photosynthesis trees absorb carbon dioxide and produce oxygen helping to offset CO2 emissions - one broad leaf tree can absorb one tonne of carbon dioxide during its full life-time (approx 100 years). As long as the ground isn’t frozen, February’s the ideal time to plant trees, the soil will soon be warming up, encouraging new roots to grow and helping the plant become established. For best results plant native UK grown British trees. For more tips on planting www.woodlandtrust.org.uk Information supplied by Nick Wilson Elmcroft Tree Services Did you know: Old oak trees are home to over 400 types of invertebrate. A 1000 year R.L.WILSON & SONS old Yew tree is maturing, but a 50 year old silver birch is ancient. Broad leaved woodland supports nearly twice as many rare and threatened species as any other habitat.

Family legend has it that it was built for the Miller family who originally came from Itchenor, Nr Chichester. Abraham, a sailor, who was born in Fishbourne and his wife Elizabeth Burstow were married in 1743 at the Subdeanery Church, Chichester. This was opposite the Cathedral. Abraham and Elizabeth had five children - Isaac, John, Abraham, Ann and Elizabeth. When it was built, the house was probably quite imposing, as there were few other properties in the immediate vicinity. At this time the road was known as Chichester Road and was the main coast road. Early photos show that it was a dirt road and the area from Peter’s Pond to Thorney Road was known as Hermitage. There was reputedly a hermitage hovel built somewhere near the pond. At this time there was no road across the water, just a ford. There was of course no running water in the district and most properties drew water from a public hand pump in the road opposite the pub. The pub was fortunate in having it’s own private well which was in the brew house and this was still working in the 1950’s. It was still in place in the mid ‘70’s until the new owners filled it in and removed the pump. Little detail can be found about the next two generations of Miller families until Abraham Miller. He was born in Emsworth (probably in the house) on the 9th August 1793 and subsequently married Elizabeth Hannington in 1823 in Alverstoke. The Post Office listing of the time shows that Elizabeth was the licence holder in 1840 to brew beer. The family subsequently had a problem with the health authorities because the premises did not come up to the required standards and discovered via a solicitor that if the license had been in the same family since before 1840 and there had been no fundamental changes to the license, the license could not be taken away. This article is by kind permission of Tony and June White (nee Miller)

Abraham William Family 1905: Photo on the left - Back row L to R: Albert Willie 1868 - 1938, Laura Jane Miller 1860 - 1945 She married Arthur Webb and the boy next to her is her son Harold Webb who was later to become a director of Harrods and next to him is Bessie Hannington Miller 1863 - 1930 and she married a Mr. Chipper. Family rumour says that she lived in the cottage on the back of the Sussex and brought up six children, but there is no evidence to support this. The Sussex Brewery 1890 : Photo Below - Every year the family rented a carriage to drive to Goodwood Races in July. This shows them outside the Sussex Brewery and was taken in about 1890. Emily Miller is standing at the gate, Bessie Hannington Miller is the driver and Abraham William is sitting next to her. Standing behind the groom is Albert Willie Miller and his sister Laura Jane is standing next to him. Presumably the others in the photo are friends or family.

Air Museum, at Singleton. It was the last day of the annul ‘A Sussex Christmas’ an event I had hither to not attended, so I borrowed a family and off we set all welly boots and scarves, trusty Nikon in hand - ready for some fresh air. Like all the events put on at the museum, there was plenty to see and do for all the family. I enjoyed a bag of roasted sweet chestnuts, not English unfortunately but from China. Tasting of Tudor fare - warm apple juice with honey and spices (would that be mead ?) - ginger bread (very gingery) - a plum, red wine and cloves mixture the name of which escapes me after the glasses of apple and honey. With somewhere in the region of 50 buildings on site and at least one new (or rather old) one opening every year, you do need more than one trip, the wonderful thing about these buildings is they are a true representation of this part of the country - a barn from Hambrook - a cart shed, used as a school later in its life from - a cattle shed from Goodwood, the list goes on ‘Bayleaf’ top: rather smokey open fire. and all have their pre-museum Bottom The store room. story as providence. The newest building is Tindalls cottage, which will open later in the year. But for me the most interesting is the Gridshell - a huge building used as the conservation workshop. So if you are looking to entertain the kids on a fair day you can’t go far wrong than to wander around at your own pace, taking in the sights and smells of the countryside. Enjoy the peace and soak The Gridshell up the history, well behaved dogs and children are welcome if Emsworth Community Singers kept on a lead . . .
