Breaking the Bamboo Ceiling – Entering into Executive Leadership Hosted by the Northwestern University Asian & Asian American Alumni Association (NU-A5) Roger Fong – Moderator Representing the tail-end Baby Boomers of NU-A5, Roger is honored and excited to lead the Bamboo Ceiling panel discussion. With a career that spans the corporate world, Silicon Valley and local startups, he has witnessed the accomplishments and challenges facing Asian American professionals in the high tech industry. Recognizing the need to build networks and develop leadership skills early in his career, Roger catalyzed the growth of the National Association of Asian American Professionals which now has 30 chapters. He currently serves on the board of several Northwestern organizations as well as an Asian American community theater group. Roger has a MBA from Kellogg and a BSME from Illinois Tech. Ngan MacDonald – VP of Enterprise Data Solutions for the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association BCBSA is a national federation of 36 independent, community-based and locally operated Blue Cross and Blue Shield (BCBS) companies. The BCBS System is the nation’s largest health insurer, covering one-in-three of all Americans. Ngan oversees strategy and operations to meet the evolving data needs of BCBSA and the BCBS companies through the delivery of creative and innovative data, business applications and shared solutions. She has primary responsibility for Plan Connexion, business applications and data governance. Prior to joining BCBSA, MacDonald was a senior principal at a healthcare data and analytics firm that specializes in management consulting and technology services. Prior to that, she spent eight years at Health Care Service Corporation, focusing on information solutions, strategy and analytics. MacDonald earned a master’s degree in information systems from DePaul University and a bachelor’s degree in communication studies from Northwestern University. Justin Choi – EVP, General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer of Anixter International Anixter is a Fortune 500 global distributor of network, security and utility power solutions. Justin oversees Anixter’s global legal activities and chairs Anixter’s corporate compliance program. Prior to joining Anixter, he served as the Executive Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary of Trustwave, a leading global provider of on-demand data security and payment card industry compliance management solutions and was responsible for all aspects of the company's legal and corporate security matters. He has also previously served as Senior Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary of Andrew Corporation, an S&P 500 global manufacturer of infrastructure equipment for the wireless industry. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy from The Johns Hopkins University and a law degree from Northwestern University School of Law. Kin Lee - CIO and Enterprise Information Security Officer of The Joint Commission Kin is leading the enterprise-wide vision for the development and execution of information technology and business applications for the Joint Commission, the Joint Commission Center for Transforming Healthcare, Joint Commission Resources, and Joint Commission International. Before joining The Joint Commission, Kin was the SVP Information Technology and was accountable for Kforce firm-wide technology and development strategy and DevOps. Formerly he was the Global CTO of Aon Corporation providing executive leadership for worldwide information technology and service delivery strategy and operations for both internal business units and external insurance and human resources clients. Kin managed over 1000 technical resources globally with over $500M operating budget in this role. Prior to joining Aon, Kin was the CTO of ManpowerGroup as well as VP & GM of Honeywell Shared Services (HSS) in Shanghai China. Kin holds a Bachelor's Degree in Quantitative Methods from the University of Illinois, a Master's degree in Operations Research from Northwestern University, and an MBA in Finance and Statistics from the University of Chicago. Kin also graduated from the Senior Executive Program at Columbia University, Global Leadership Program at Harvard University, and Honeywell Senior Management Development Program. He is the current Class Secretary of Harvard Business School Alumni Bulletin and a board member of the Council of International Program Chicago. Kathryn Kimura Mlsna – Associate Executive Director of Planning and Operations at the American Academy of Periodontology, NU Alumni Executive Leader, Attorney, and Author At the American Academy of Periodontology, Kathryn is responsible for strategic planning, operations, human resources, technology, and annual meeting revenue generation at the American Academy of Periodontology. Prior to her current role, Kathryn was Strategy/Legal Officer for the Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana where she served as chief of staff and was responsible for board governance. Her previous position was assistant vice president/client services for Global Lead Management Consulting, a firm providing consulting and training services in the area of diversity and inclusion and talent management, now a Korn Ferry company. Kathryn also was managing counsel at McDonald's Corporation, Oak Brook, Illinois; leading the Global Marketing and Intellectual Property Group in McDonald's Global Legal Department. Kathryn service to Northwestern is distinguished. She is a past president of the Northwestern Alumni Association (NAA) and a former member of Northwestern University Board of Trustees. She is a past president of The Council of One Hundred, the university’s mentoring organization; and was steering committee chair for Northwestern University Asian and Asian American Alumni Association (NU-A5). She co-chaired numerous undergraduate and law school reunion committees and served on the law school fund board of the Pritzker School of Law. While at Northwestern she pledged Kappa Alpha Theta. Kathryn is co-author of the chapter "Planning a Legal Promotion – Sales Promotion Laws and Regulations" appearing in The Sales Promotion Handbook, Dartnell Publishing. She is a contributor to the American Bar Association's publication Dear Sisters, Dear Daughters, a compilation of mentoring advice from 80 lawyers in the United States, and its book What In House Counsel Need to Know. Kathryn is the author of numerous articles has been featured in books about business leadership. She is a past chair/president (the first female lawyer to hold this position) of the 700-member Promotion Marketing Association. Michael Fang - CEO of BASE10 Genetics BASE10 Genetics is a biotech company that provides genomics driven health programs for large corporations and insurers to help their population achieve better health outcomes. Prior to BASE10, Michael was the founder of CETA Inc., a health information technology company that was ranked #297 on Inc. Magazine’s 5000 fastest-growing private US companies in 2015. He was also the Co-Founder of IMOSPHERE, where the population health analytics software he co- created is now used by the NHS to track healthcare cost of over 7 million mental health patients in the UK. Most recently, Michael served as the Chief Medical Officer for ORIG3N Inc. and was part of the core leadership team that led the company through successful venture-backed rounds. Michael is passionate about innovation in healthcare, and sits on the executive board of the Chicago Chapter of the Society of Physician Entrepreneurs. He is also the Chairman of the MDs in Business Subcommittee for the National Alumni Association of Northwestern's Feinberg of School of Medicine, where he is working to empower clinicians to have an influence on the technologies that are brought into patient care. Michael Liu – VP of Global Strategy and M&A at TransUnion Michael is responsible for strategy and M&A at TransUnion Healthcare. TransUnion is a leader in revenue cycle management data and analytics solutions that protect the financial health of healthcare providers and payers. Prior to TU, Michael was VP of Strategy & Business Development at Local Offer Network, a venture-backed technology start-up, Senior Director of Strategy & Operations at Tribune Interactive, and a Consultant at The Boston Consulting Group. Michael received his MBA from Kellogg, and his Bachelor’s in Economics from Stanford University. Kevin Bradley – Sr Manager of Global Talent, Diversity and Inclusion at Boeing Kevin is a seasoned professional in the Inclusion and Diversity arena. At Boeing, Kevin works with the Commercial Aircraft business and manages teams at various global sites to engage with community leaders and employees. Kevin created an enterprise-wide diversity recruitment strategy to ensure Boeing’s success and position as an industry leader. Prior to Boeing, Kevin served as the Director of Diversity and Inclusion leader at Discover Financial Services, Assurant, and McDonald’s Corporation. Kevin also served in various HR Management roles at RR Donnelly & Sons, Waste Management Inc, Abbott Laboratories, and United Airlines. Kevin received his BA from Northeastern Illinois University, and is currently completing his Master’s degree at Villanova University. .
