Box 222, Dschang, Cameroon. ABSTRACT The present study was carried out as a first documentation of short horn grasshoppers in the Menoua Division of Cameroon. A total of 1587 specimens were collected from six sites i.e. Dschang (265), Fokoue (253), Fongo – Tongo (267), Nkong – Ni (271), Penka Michel (268) and Santchou (263). Identification of these grasshoppers showed 28 species that included 22 Acrididae and 6 Pyrgomorphidae. The Acrididae belonged to 8 subfamilies (Acridinae, Catantopinae, Cyrtacanthacridinae, Eyprepocnemidinae, Oedipodinae, Oxyinae, Spathosterninae and Tropidopolinae) while the Pyrgomorphidae belonged to only one subfamily (Pyrgomorphinae). The Catantopinae (Acrididae) showed the highest number of species while Oxyinae, Spathosterninae and Tropidopolinae showed only one species each. Ten Acrididae species (Acanthacris ruficornis, Anacatantops sp, Catantops melanostictus, Coryphosima stenoptera, Cyrtacanthacris aeruginosa, Eyprepocnemis noxia, Gastrimargus africanus, Heteropternis sp, Ornithacris turbida, and Trilophidia conturbata ) and one Pyrgomorphidae (Zonocerus variegatus) were collected in all the six sites. -

MARIANA ISLANDS BIODIVERSITY. Short-horn grasshoppers Phylum: Arthropoda Class: Insecta Order: Orthoptera Suborder: Caelifera Superfamilies: Tetrigoidea and Acridoidea. Diversity Micronesia – 23 species, Mariana Isl. – 10 species, CNMI - 9 species Ecological and human significance Short-horn grasshoppers are herbivores usually living in open grassy or weedy areas. Although they have been implicated in crop damage, such as maize, severe damage usually occurs only when there is a buildup of numbers, such as that occurring sometimes with the locust (Locusta migratoria). It is unlikely that any of the grasshoppers are indigenous to the Northern Mariana Islands as they are dwellers of open grassland or of, at least, low-cover, open areas. It is probable that most of the islands were mostly covered by forest prior to the advent and influence of man. It does seem that Stenocatantops splendens has recently entered the Northern Marianas, as , although it is now common on Saipan, there were no records prior to the recent (2000) collected material. It is a moderately sized animal and unlikely to be missed by collectors. Heteropternis obscurella seems, similarly, to have recently colonised the CNMI although its presence on Sarigan indicates a longer occupation period. Both species are in the University of Guam collection but were not recorded by Kevan et al 1997 from the Marianas. Conservation There are no conservation issues recognised at present, and none can really be determined until a thorough survey of the areas has been undertaken. Abstract-The species of grasshoppers of the superfamilies Acridoidea, Tetrigoidea, and Tridactyloidea of Micronesia are discussed with com plete data on Micronesian distribution. Two new species of Tetrigidae, Carolinotettix palauensis and Hydrotettix carolinensis, are described. Introduction Preliminary studies towards this contribution to our knowledge of the or thopteroid fauna of Micronesia are in an unpublished thesis by the third author (English 1978). Over the years, a considerable amount of additional information has been accumulated and two relevant papers published by the first author. In ad dition, there is a paper by the first author, in press, that deals with non-saltatorial orthopteroids. The first of the above publications (Kevan 1987) gives a preliminary survey of virtually all of the saltatorial orthopteroids (grigs) known to occur in Micronesia, as well as defining the limits of the region and giving a brief review of the relevant literature on the insects concerned. It also discusses some important points relating to the nomenclature of some of them. The second publication (Kevan 1990) is concerned with the same groups of insects, but confines its attention, more or less, to known or suspected introduced species (including Acridoidea) and their probable origins. A few non-saltatorial or thopteroids are also mentioned in passing. 2 Another paper (Kevan unpublished ) deals very fully with all groups of or thopteroids other than members of the saltatorial orders (termites and earwigs in cluded), mainly as recorded in the literature, which is extensively reviewed. -

S. de Medeiros1 & Cassandra G. Extavour1,2* Over the course of evolution, organism size has diversified markedly. Changes in size are thought to have occurred because of developmental, morphological and/or ecological pressures. To perform phylogenetic tests of the potential effects of these pressures, here we generated a dataset of more than ten thousand descriptions of insect eggs, and combined these with genetic and life-history datasets. We show that, across eight orders of magnitude of variation in egg volume, the relationship between size and shape itself evolves, such that previously predicted global patterns of scaling do not adequately explain the diversity in egg shapes. We show that egg size is not correlated with developmental rate and that, for many insects, egg size is not correlated with adult body size. Instead, we find that the evolution of parasitoidism and aquatic oviposition help to explain the diversification in the size and shape of insect eggs. Our study suggests that where eggs are laid, rather than universal allometric constants, underlies the evolution of insect egg size and shape. Size is a fundamental factor in many biological processes. DNA Barcoding and Species Boundary Delimitation of Selected Species of Chinese Acridoidea (Orthoptera: Caelifera) Jianhua Huang1,2, Aibing Zhang3, Shaoli Mao1, Yuan Huang1* 1 College of Life Sciences, Shaanxi Normal University, Xi’an, People’s Republic of China, 2 College of Life Sciences, Guangxi Normal University, Guilin, People’s Republic of China, 3 College of Life Sciences, Capital Normal University, Beijing, People’s Republic of China Abstract We tested the performance of DNA barcoding in Acridoidea and attempted to solve species boundary delimitation problems in selected groups using COI barcodes. Three analysis methods were applied to reconstruct the phylogeny. K2P distances were used to assess the overlap range between intraspecific variation and interspecific divergence. ‘‘Best match (BM)’’, ‘‘best close match (BCM)’’, ‘‘all species barcodes (ASB)’’ and ‘‘back-propagation neural networks (BP-based method)’’ were utilized to test the success rate of species identification. Phylogenetic species concept and network analysis were employed to delimitate the species boundary in eight selected species groups. The results demonstrated that the COI barcode region performed better in phylogenetic reconstruction at genus and species levels than at higher-levels, but showed a little improvement in resolving the higher-level relationships when the third base data or both first and third base data were excluded. Most overlaps and incorrect identifications may be due to imperfect taxonomy, indicating the critical role of taxonomic revision in DNA barcoding study. Species boundary delimitation confirmed the presence of oversplitting in six species groups and suggested that each group should be treated as a single species. While work on Orthoptera in Singapore is not lacking, there is no species checklist for the species found within the Bukit Timah Nature Reserve (BTNR). Here, a checklist of orthopterans in the reserve is given based on specimens deposited in the Zoological Reference Collection of the Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum, Singapore. In total, 83 species, 30 from the suborder Caelifera (grasshoppers and relatives) and 53 from the suborder Ensifera (crickets, katydids, and relatives), are recorded from the reserve. Keywords. Crickets, diversity, grasshoppers, insects, katydids, richness Introduction There are more than 2000 species of grasshoppers, crickets, and katydids in Southeast Asia (Cigliano et al., 2018; Tan et al., 2017c). Collectively known as the Orthoptera, the grasshoppers belong to the monophyletic suborder Caelifera, whereas the crickets and katydids belong to the other monophyletic suborder Ensifera (Song et al., 2015). These insects include a very few species that are notorious pests (Willemse, 2001). However, owing to the richness in species and diversity of form, orthopterans provide more ecosystem services than might have been expected. They can function as potentially mutualistic pollinators (e.g., Tan & Tan, 2018), predators of other pest species, prey to charismatic species (e.g., Fung et al., 2018) and potential ecological indicators (e.g., Tan et al., 2017a). -

Department of Zoology, Hazara During inspection 1402 species of grasshoppers and Locusts were collected from different localities in University, Mansehra, Pakistan Hazara region. Collected specimens of Acrididae family were identified and sorted out into 73 species pertaining to 11 sub-families and 38 genera, has been enlisted to othopterean fauna of this region. Beside this it was noted that the members of subfamily family Acridinae was found to be most abundant with 20.82%, followed by Oedipodinae, Gomphocerinae and Oxyinae with 17.61%, 17.47% and 14.40% respectively.
