  • Responding to Violence in the Homeland: Identity and Transnational Activism Within the Indian Christian Diaspora
1 RESPONDING TO VIOLENCE IN THE HOMELAND: IDENTITY AND TRANSNATIONAL ACTIVISM WITHIN THE INDIAN CHRISTIAN DIASPORA A dissertation presented By Autumn L. Mathias to The Department of Sociology & Anthropology In partial fulfillment for the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy In the field of Sociology Northeastern University Boston, Massachusetts October 2017 2 RESPONDING TO VIOLENCE IN THE HOMELAND: IDENTITY AND TRANSNATIONAL ACTIVISM WITHIN THE INDIAN CHRISTIAN DIASPORA A dissertation presented By Autumn L. Mathias ABSTRACT OF DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Sociology in the College of Social Sciences and Humanities of Northeastern University October 2017 3 ABSTRACT Within the last twenty years, instances of violence against Christian minorities in India have drawn international attention. The rise of the Hindu nationalist movement and concordant political shifts are often cited as precipitating factors to what many deem as systematic religious persecution. However, few sociological studies have investigated how Indian Christians in diaspora have reacted to these significant events. To explore this topic, I employed a qualitative, phenomenological approach including in-depth interviews with forty-seven individuals residing in the United States and Canada, participant observation at six events, and a review of diasporic and India-based media. Throughout this dissertation, I advance the argument that diaspora Indian Christians’ perceptions of and responses to persecution are connected in a nuanced way to translocational positionality. More specifically, remembrances of persecution events, perceptions of the causes of these events, types of transnational responses, motivations for spiritual and/or political forms of activism, and engagement in ecumenical and/or interreligious networks are inherently linked and best understood within an integrated theoretical framework including translocational positionality, transnational social fields, memory, and the social ecological model.

Principal'sPrincipal's MessageMessage Higher Education to be effective and relevant for the growth of our Nation, it is imperative that an atmosphere of creativity, reflection and fresh thinking is to be infused among the students, faculty and in the climate of the institution. An education imparted without igniting the minds for newness and reflection is not worth it's effort. New ideas must emerge. Well thought out analysis of various problems that bug our society, proposing innovative solutions to those issues that hinder or regress the growth of development - these are the needs of the hour. A positive and hopeful response to these needs can emerge only from the institutions of higher education. In order to fulfill the goals of education, research and publication are a must in an institution of higher learning. Faculty in these institutions must realize the importance and requirement of their profession. It is not sufficient just to engage the students in class room activity. Knowledge explosion has made it easy to access information. Hence, Analysis and suggestions to approach a problem from various perspectives is to be taught. I am very happy that the editorial board under the leadership of Dr Norbert Lobo has brought out this issue of Al-Shodhana, the refereed research journal of St Aloysius College. Through this journal, the creative ideas thought out by the teaching faculty will see the light of day. It will also be an inspiration for many more young minds of our College to immerse themselves in creative research. • Mud Marine: the Rise and Fall of Mangalore Tiles
Mud Marine: The Rise and Fall of Mangalore Tiles Ian M. Cook If you climb atop a high-rise apartment in Mangaluru, India, and look down you will see a trickle of red-tiled roofs among the trees. Caressed by rivers to the north and south, the coastal city’s red-tiled houses were once a characteristic visual marker of the region. And, if you are accompanied on your trip into the clouds by one of the city’s elderly residents, then they might be- moan the loss of a distinctive cityscape. The concrete blocks that grow in number and size each year do not look much different from those in Bengaluru, Mumbai or Chennai. Nostalgic locals might further point out that the red tiles made from clay gathered at the riverbanks bear the name of the city itself: Mangalore tiles. And, moreover, Mangalore tiles once had an in- ternational reputation that spoke to the bountiful offerings of land and the ordering promise of industrial modernization. But that was some time ago. Now, next to no one wants to live in a ‘tiled house’. I want to invite you down from atop the high-rise and into the mud of Tulu Nadu, the region of which Mangaluru is the largest city. An examination of the colonial and post-colonial buildings reveals the walls that serve as real barriers of exclusion, but also the in-between spatial structures of the built form: framed in-be- tween material and representational planes, and in-between local 111 and colonial cultural formations (Scriver and Prakash 2007).
