Alphaville: Journal of Film and Screen Media no. 19, 2020, pp. 230–241 DOI: https://doi.org/10.33178/alpha.19.22 Netflix Nostalgia: Screening the Past on Demand, edited by Kathryn Pallister. Lexington Books, 2019, 260 pp. The Aesthetics of Nostalgia TV: Production Design and the Boomer Era, by Alex Bevan. Bloomsbury Academic, 2019, 245 pp. Martin Fradley It scarcely needs pointing out that “nostalgia” has become a highly contentious battleground in recent years. Since the European Union referendum and the election of Donald Trump in 2016, a backwards-looking retreat into regressive nationalist mythologies has been widely understood as ideologically symptomatic of liberal democracies still reeling from the economic implosion of 2007–2008. Typically seen as a reactionary tendency of the political Right, the nostalgic amnesia of the progressive Left is equally self-evident in sentimental mourning for both the pro-hegemonic Obama presidency and the UK’s membership of a market-driven European Union. It would be a mistake, however, to understand this brand of nostalgic regress as simply a post-2016 phenomenon. As Simon Reynolds points out in Retromania, the “end of history” has heralded a neurotic preoccupation with the past. “Instead of being about itself,” Reynolds muses, “the 2000s have been about every other previous decade happening again all at once: a simultaneity of pop time that abolishes history while nibbling away at the present’s sense of itself as an era with a distinct identity and feel” (x–xi). As Reynolds suggests, there is a paradox at the heart of twenty-first century nostalgia.

Comparing the Jim Crow, post-apartheid, and “postracial” eras. The project documents institutional and socially-sanctioned racism over the course of a century in the U.S. south. Crafting an interdisciplinary methodology that encompasses archival investigations, critical race and gender theories, and analysis of visual culture, I conduct case studies of the heroism of dockhand Tom Lee, the Sanitation Workers Strike of 1968, and the depiction of twenty-first century urban life in Hustle and Flow to disrupt pernicious and pervasive stereotypes of Black men. I demonstrate how a culture of emasculation generated practices of subjugation and systemic oppression, which operated over time and through changing modes of employment and economic dispossession to produce Black men as racialized and gendered subjects. I also illuminate Black men’s creative resistance to these modes of subjugation, identifying diverse means devised by Black men who struggled against great odds to build lives of dignity and win public respect.

  • The Echo: May 14, 2020; Eddie Murphy Returns to the Spotlight As
5/14/2020, 9:00AM Eddie Murphy returns to the spotlight as Rudy Ray Moore “Dolemite is My Name” highlights an inyuential icon and era By ETHAN RICE Rudy Ray Moore (Eddie Murphy) struggles to xnd his place in the white-dominated movie industry in “Dolemite is My Name” On the streets of 1970’s Los Angeles, one comedy legend steps into the shoes of another as Eddie Murphy takes on the true story of struggling-artist-turned- unlikely-superstar Rudy Ray Moore. A little known but hugely inyuential artistic xgure, Moore was a struggling comic and musician who crafted stories from street poets and African heritage into a character act telling profane tales of outrageous exploits. Moore would go on to produce and star in multiple movies based on his characters, most famously a martial arts-wielding pimp named Dolemite. Directed by Craig Brewer, the 2019 Netyix-original biopic “Dolemite is My Name” (R) follows Moore’s journey from the invention of the Dolemite character to the 1975 release of the original movie. Murphy plays Moore as an earnest man deeply immersed in the culture of African American art and caught up in the thrall of Hollywood. Moore just can’t seem to catch a break, however. Already existing on the outskirts of industries dominated by powerful white men, he’s too broke, too fat and too out of date, stuck working a day job at the famous Dolphin’s of Hollywood record store to get by. He spends his days trying to get the store’s resident DJ, Roj (Snoop Dogg), to play his records and his nights delivering lame jokes as a club’s M.C., opening for his friend Ben (Craig Robinson) and his band.
